Im absolutely heartbroken. I took my baby 5 month old pitbull mix puppy to get fixed here through the snip program yesterday at 9 am. Little did I know I was leaving her there for a night to get her back with an infected, butcher-like cut on her stomach. I picked her up the next day and didnt look at her wound right away but noticed on the ride home she was uncomfortable and wouldnt sit down. When I got home she went to her bed and was just standing there. I used a light from my phone to look under her belly and saw a nightmare. It was cut in such a way where its definitely uncomfortable especially stitched up. It was stitched up with some sort of silver wiring too. No dissolvable stitched or glue. Ouch?! Ive seen these procedures done before and this was not done properly, for at least the abnormally LONG incision and poor stitching! I panicked and took her to a local vet ( so much better ) and they said it was for sure infected. They took pictures and basically said she would need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic cream for her infection not to progress. I then called Shank and told them what was happening and they told me to come back to get her looked at and to get the medication they forgot to give me when I left. Nor did they give me any instructions or paperwork for helping her heal afterwards. When I returned my dog Xena was immediately taken by one of the "helpers" to the back surgery room. I then asked why I couldn't go with her, for I was allowed to be with her at the other vet during examination?? Especially considering the circumstances! She then said "You cant, we do a lot of surgeries back here." I was then sitting at the nearest bench, crying, when a gentlemen in the waiting room came over to me and said "This isnt my vet but here's mine hes really good" and I told him the just of what happened and what I was told by another great vet and that its infected. I took my baby Sadie in to be spayed she was 3yrs 5months old in good health fun loving dog. I dropped her off on March 28, 2017 9am they said they would call when surgery was done. No call. Showed up on March 29th they said she passed away. Said they would call after autopsy. No call. They payed to have her cremated. Said they would call when they got her back. Again no call. DO NOT GO HERE THIS MAN IS A BUTCHER This place is just as sketchy and disorganized as it looks. Not only that but he broke vet code during my dogs surgery and provided the sloppiest surgery ever.   I took my dog in for a simple surgery (hernia removal) that was supposed to begin at 9, and I was supposed to pick her up between 4-5. We told them to call us when they start, finish, and if anything happens in between. We waited till 12:00. No call. So we called. They haven't started. We called again at 3 because no one had called us. Nope. Still haven't started. Not only that, but when we called shank answered the phone himself and hung up on us rudely. We called again at 4:45 to find out she's FINALLY in surgery, and has to stay overnight now. Thanks for the curtesy call. They finally call us themselves at 6. They started off by saying "we had to remove the gallbladder- OH WAIT WRONG FILE PLEASE HOLD" comes on the phone again. "We had to remove 4 teeth- OH WRONG FILE PLEASE HOLD" at this point, were freaking out and just want our dog back. Now she says "we had to spay your dog". Excuse me? No one called me with any complications and you're now telling me this delusional doctor DECIDED what was right for my dog without my consent?  He tried to cover his ass by saying her uterus was inflamed and she didn't need it. When we dropped her off at 8:30, there were other people dropping off their dogs for a "free neutering in the zip code 33311". I think they fucked up the files, neutered her in the morning and realized they fucked up and had to keep her later to get her real surgery done. So disorganized. Later on we called shank himself because he didn't have the curtesy to call us himself. He told us to "get over it." And he was right and he's not going to apologize for it. And that there was "no reason to call us about it". When we took her home we looked at her stitches and she was cut open from the top of her stomach to the bottom, probably a 8 inch cut. the stitches were the sloppiest stitches ever possible. Some parts of the stitches were cutting off circulation of her skin. Everything was purple for months. The worst part? He didn't even remove the hernia. I'm pretty sure he knew he was unqualified for this surgery and just went in cutting around hoping for the best. My dog was not the same after this surgery.Update. My dog died yesterday. I will forever regret taking my dog to Shank Animal Hospital. It's been 6 weeks since we first took our Doberman puppy in to be spayed and we're still treating her for a severe post-op infection. They never provided post-op instructions or the results of her testing. We were given antibiotics and ointment only after expressing concern about her reddening, swelling, and hardening incision. They failed to remove all of the wire sutures. I took her in to our previous vet for a second opinion, there she was placed on 4 weeks of antibiotics and the missed sutures were found & removed. Always able to get an appointment same day or within 24hr. Dr Shank is kind and cares about the animals. I do not have a lot of money and they are more than willing to work with me and do not try to charge for unneeded tests or medicines. This is a wonderful facility with top notch staff. We are from Canada and love to cruise and camp so our dogs are usually with us when we make the trip to south Florida. We have boarded our 13 year old Chihuahua and our 3 year old Morky and both have times have been wonderful experiences for us and our dogs. Very caring staff and the doc is just a great guy. Later when I found an old blind dehydrated dog suffering from heatstroke behind my building they gave her fluids and bathed her and gave her vitamins and when I went to pick her up there was no charge. They have had a few opportunities to take advantage of me financially and they declined to do so which is a different experience than I have had with other veterinarians. Don't like Shank Animal Hospital. My sister took one of our puppies here and told them that our puppy was having a problem with one of her ears. They never looked at her ear and gave her a parvo shot that was never talked about. Also my sister talked to them about fleas and ticks and told them that we had just bought K9 advantix and had already put it on her. They didn't listen and charged her for a 6pk. of Heart Guard but only gave her one to take home. All in all they charged my sister $100.00. When my mom called to talk to them about this situation they were very rude on the phone. My sister got some of her money back, but we will never take our dogs to this place again. Read Less

Sutures normally can be removed any where form 10 to 14 days. Sounds like the tech should not have removed them so early. I used to work here many years ago and I highly recommend NOT using this place. The Dr. is bi-polar and not very animal friendly. It was all about the money way back then when I worked there and it still is. He even killed out 9 year old dog by putting it on Rimadyl and NEVER doing any kind of blood work before giving it to us to give to him, as apparently he had an underlying liver problem and was dead 16 days after taking the drug. Get your animal blood tested people BEFORE having them put on any type of pain medication or have any kind of surgery done. Read Less

To Whom It May Concern:I will be calling to speak with someone in person and if need be visiting the Humane Society in person. This is something that concerns me and kinda pissed me off. I took my dog Olive in for the low cost spaying at the Shank Animal Hospital on 2-9-12 and her stitches were removed on 2-18-12, once the stitches were removed i had to take her home and put her in her cage and go directly to work. I got home that afternoon and noticed a raw spot on her that looked like something had come undone, there was no bleeding at all and the dog wasn't and still isn't licking it but the look of it had me worried. I called Shank Animal Hospital this morning to see if anyone was there or what to do about it and toward the end of my conversation, Im assuming it was the vet, he asked what i got the normal service or Pals.....I wasn't sure what he meant and told him i went through the Humane Society, his response to that was "Oh, im not coming in today for that"Sooo Im thinking to myself does he care about the animals or does he care about money. Instead of the 60, if i had paid a reg vet price of an average of $250+ dollars would that be enough for you to come in to check on a dog you operated on and your vet techs removed the stitches and that im concerned about this area that looks like raw meat from the inside of my dog. I've never heard good things about this vet office since i moved to south florida, but im the type of person to give someone a chance to prove word of mouth wrong, in this case however it is correct....i will not EVER take my dog back to this place for any reason at all.Since the Humane Society is using this vet and has your name on the line i thought you should know my experience and take it for what it is, im sitting in the animal ER right now while someone looks at my dog since he couldn't be bothered.
