I took my dog bowser in a couple days ago for a ruptured disc he has in his back, he was in a ridiculous amount of pain and was not eating an drinking. 2 days after doctor Sarah's care bowser is eating, drinking, walking, and using the bathroom on his own again. He is doing 110% better. I need to get him caught up on shots but they are allowing me to return later to finish his vaccines because they didn't want to cause more pain. This team really cares about their costumers and the animals. Thank you so much Dr. Sarah and team! Read Less

Overpriced. Moved to Gainesville & went to this vet because of location. After treating my dog for an ear infection (much more expensive than my last vet ), I was told to bring her back in 2 weeks for a recheck. I was charged another $75 & told to bring her back AGAIN in another 2 weeks (another $75, of course). Cancelled the appt & changed vets. Also asked Oaks Veterinarian about arthritis meds, they tried to sell me some ongoing therapy costing hundreds of dollars, instead of basic arthritis meds. Read Less

When we first moved to Gainesville from Pittsburgh, we put off finding a vet for our glaring (that is what you call a group of cats... or clowder, pounce, nuisance, or clutter. For feral cats it's a destruction. And of course a group of kittens: litter, kindle, intrigue) because finding a new vet is tough. Who can you trust? Who doesn't charge and arm and a leg? I'll tell you who, Oaks Veterinary Hospital. My neighbor recommended Dr. Dean-Kesler and so do I (but ALL the other docs I have encountered are great, too!) She listens to what you have to say and gives honest opinions. She is extremely knowledgeable and easy to communicate with! I'll just leave it at that.NOT TO MENTION Oaks animal Wellness plans are AMAZING. They really are trying to save you money here. (Trust me, in Pittsburgh, I had a full workup done on my now 17 year old kitty, plus had to have a tooth pulled, and we spent well over a $1,300. I even called around to other places in the area and got quotes on all the stuff I needed to be done and the cheapest was $1,000.) Here I got ALL the same things done for almost half that (minus having a tooth pulled, which is always extra by a couple hundred depending on the situation, but at least the Wellness plan covers a dental cleaning and thankfully we did not need another tooth pulled.) Also, the medicated food prices (if you buy by the case) are better than at Petsmart and they usually have a coupon. I LOVE a good coupon! Another great option for the yearly Wellness plan is the office visit fee is 1/3 of the regular fee. All this, and not to mention the boarding fees are reasonably priced AND you have the added security of your fur baby staying in an actual hospital, just in case of an emergency. As I said earlier, I have an elderly pet, multiple medications and special needs and they don't even charge me extra for all that. NEVER CHANGE OAKS!Anyway,  I highly suggest you bring all your fur babies to this establishment. My sister has even decided to SWITCH VETS because she was so impressed when she went with me to my cat's first appointment. I truly cannot say enough great things about Dr. Dean-Kesler and the staff at Oaks Vet Hospital. It's comforting to know your pet's best interest is at heart and you are not just a dollar sign. Staff was great but the prices are not what you are told prior to getting there. I was told that I would have a $99 first exam fee for new clients and I had two dogs and my bill was $420 walking out the door. Also when I called her earlier I asked for a price on health certificates for puppies and was told 60 to $70 but when I asked them after getting that outrageous Bill to give me an exact figure they called me back a couple of days later and a health certificate cost $120 per puppy instead of the 60 to $70 I was quoted over the phone. This staff is absolutely amazing and the care is great however the prices are very misleading and for that reason I will not go back and I canceled my next appointment. Read Less

I had came to this office because they offered 99 dollar shots to first time patients. I have a German shepherd puppy that was ready for her year shots and me being a college student I thought this was a good deal. At the end of the day I ended up spending 190 dollars total and after I told the office I couldn't afford extra sedative in order for them to do certain cleanining on her teeth and nails they went ahead and gave her the extra sedative without my knowledge and tried to charge me extra for it. They also left me with an outstanding balance of 36 dollars for a shot that I never agreed to even give to my pet. I could tell these offices were money hungry and when they called to schedule a follow up app. I told them I wasn't interested in bringing my dog back and instead of trying to work with me and keep me as a loyal customer they just said alright. I do not reccomend bringing your pet here!! They are unprofessional and will charge you unknowingly!! Read Less

Fifteen years ago, when there was no Yelp, I would have given them 5 stars. Always got annoyed with the 'how much do you love your pet?" laminated package shown to me by the tech, but otherwise loved this office.  They were compassionate and caring, and were great during the time that I dealt with two chronically ill pets, that eventually had to be put down.Forward to many years later, when I finally felt up to adopting a cat and dog after the heartbreak of losing my others years ago. Dr Hammerslog seems to have lost all compassion and now seems non-caring and angry, when she used to be so wonderful.  Front office seems unfriendly and non animal loving.  It seems to be all about the money, I felt no compassion or love.  I had several condescending little comments made, with looks like I was an imbecile  when I questioned things about safety of different food, vaccines, oral flea control  etc., as both my last two animals died of cancer at a young age within a year of each other. This makes me sad, as I at one point was in love with this office.  They are two miles from my house, and I always like to support the local business. For this last year, we have been going to Affordable Vet in Newberry and love them.  They truly are about half the price, and the vet and staff act like they really appreciate you and love your animal. Our young Air Force family moved to Gainesville in 1984 and chose to settle here three years later and acquired our first dog, Mickey, a beautiful, strong, healthy, responsive fellow, in '90. We chose Oaks for our pets because they were in the neighborhood. It didn't take long to learn that we'd have gone anywhere to have the compassion, knowledge, skills, care and personal attention upon which we have come to rely. We've seen changes and personnel come and go, but the standard established has always come through. Thank you, Dr. Hamerslag, Dr. Kaplan-Stein, and Dr. Dean for your heart and soul care for good of the whole family. You're doing great! Vince & Tandy Carnes and Our Fur Family Read Less

The front of the house stand was fantastic, friendly and the waiting room was free of certain smells.  The reception/payment end of my first (and sure to be only) visit is the reason they earned a second star.  Fifteen minute delay after appointment time to be admitted to a second private room, then have to wait some more.  Warning: Examinations are performed away from the owner.  They are not conducted anywhere that an owner can facilitate or participate in your pet's (for me, a cat's) visit.  They didn't even weigh the cat in front of me.  I don't know that she received the injections I was charged for or not.  They did not even offer to let me observe the exam through a window.  I did not have a good feeling. The tech was decent and asked what I thought were good questions, before my cat was taken, but the vet doctor herself (Harslag?) did not meet expectations.  Not good at care giving, but excellent at finding ways to bill you.  Upselling by playing on your fears.  I've never seen any health professional blame (medical or vet) the patient for an incomplete diagnosis.I took my cat to the vet, and in turn, I was taken to the cleaners.  They have at least one other doctor so your outcome might vary.  As for me, I will be seeking pet care elsewhere.  They may have excellent pet boarding/kennel services, but I don't know. They have a very friendly staff and I purchase my medicated dog food here. Whenever they get a new shipment, the company gives coupons so they give me those discounts without me knowing they existed! As far as care goes, it's always good to have a second opinion, like with people, and you can make decisions based on the information you gather. They decided it was best to put my dog down, but my mother, a physician, decided "No" and used physical therapy on my dog to help his spinal disc slip. As long as you have patience and love, it is possible to overcome some condition and now he's well and alive and chasing squirrels; but please, take into consideration that my mother is a physician and was a physical therapist and knew what she was doing. However, there is no hard feelings to oaks vet because they took care and performed very well on my dog for his own well being. We still come here for regular check-ups. The Tower Rd. location is also very convenient. Read Less

I took my little Yorkie Mix here for about a year before I had to switch to another vet! I will start with the good things about Oaks Hospital: the receptionists, assistants and doctors are courteous and friendly. The waiting room and exam rooms seem clean, and you usually don't have to wait more than 10 minutes to be called in (with appointment). Also, they sell a variety of good products such as treats, natural insect repellents and carpet odor removers. But, the hospital shows no care for you furry friend's health and well-being. All they care about is "money"! About five months ago, I bought a complete examination and lab-work package for $276 which included blood test, urine and fecal test. They ran the blood test, and asked me to collect the stool and urine sample. I collected the stool sample but couldn't collect more than 5-6 drops of urine. I didn't let my dog to pee for a couple of hours, and took him back to the vet and asked them to collect the urine sample. One of their vet assistants tried to collect more sample but she couldn't collect any! So they performed a complete urine test on 5-6 drops of urine since I had already paid for the test!!! They also said that they tested the stool sample and all the test results were good, but they didn't even bother to update the results to their system. After 4-5 months they emailed me that my dog is due for his annual fecal and heartworm test! Also, I recently took my dog in for an ear infection, and I paid $137 for examination, Otic discharge test, and medication; after 10-12 days of treatment, my dog was still scratching his ears, shaking his head and producing the brownish discharge. When I called the hospital to take my dog back to them, I was told that there is a "reduced charge" for seeing why their diagnosis and prescription has not worked! I explained to them that it does not make sense to charge me again for the same exact problem that I have paid them to solve. And they argued that is why I have to ONLY pay a reduced charge of $36!! I switched to another vet and paid only $19 for an Otic discharge test which cost me $37 at Oaks Veterinary Hospital! I always prefer to go to the same doctors and vets, and I don't like to switch. But, I was Oaks Veterinary Hospital client for about a year and I didn't see the level of "care for animals" that I expect from a vet! I lost my faith in them and will never take my dog back to Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Read Less

Definitely better than Banfield (who I switched from), but not by much. Doctors are polite and knowledgeable, but its the front desk staff and manager that are the problem. They claim to have a price match policy on meds, but they do everything in their power to not price match so they can make more money. Example: Called them yesterday about a price match on Trifexis for $92.99 from allivet.com. Add their $6.27 shipping and the total comes out to $99.26. Catherine, the receptionist, tells me to buy theirs at $108.99 and then use the mail-in-rebate for $10 on a 6-month supply for a final price of $98.99. The 27 cent difference DOES NOT SAVE ME MONEY SINCE I HAVE TO MAIL THE REBATE IT AND PAY FOR POSTAGE! Catherine's response to my statement that I won't be saving money: "I'll have to check with my manager, but since its such a small difference in price match, I don't think we can do it." ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? You're supposed to be an office that helps animals.Take home point: If they don't make money off you, they won't help you. Goodbye Oaks Vet! Called Suburban Animal Hospital immediately after getting off the phone and they are in the process of getting my online order approved from allivet.com so that I can pay ~$16/dose instead of ~$23/dose for Trifexis from you scumbags.Sidenote: Use allivet.com or have 1800PetMeds price match.
