They upsell and are not clear with procedure estimates. I was not aware that my appointment would be almost $600 for two cats to get leukemia and rabies vaccines with a blood panel including urinanalysis until after the appointment even though I asked for estimates before. They did not even perform a urinanalysis on one of my cats even though they charged me for it since it was "a package deal with the blood panel." This was the only vet I had gone to in Gainesville for 5 years, and because this was my first experience owning cats, I thought the things they were constantly upselling me were necessary. I am definitely going elsewhere, and for those that chose to use them - I recommend getting the itemized costs before the appointment and cross check them with what the internet/other vets actually say is necessary. I’ve been going to Shores since 2012 and I’ve never had a bad experience. The front desk techs are knowledgeable and friendly. The vet techs are gentle and very helpful. This is hardly a business as much as it is a trap for unsuspecting pet owners. Not only do they want to pile on an insanely expense "low-cost subscription insurance," but they also just plain fail to deliver in performance. They failed to test positive for worms and fleas the first time we went in both fecal and blood tests, but upon finding a long tape worm in one cat and small black bugs (which we thought were worms but actually were fleas) they did a 180 and tested positive the second time, while we were of course charged for both times. We explained this to them and they did nothing. We asked for an estimate before coming here (around $60, bill ended up being $220). Otherwise, the place is clean and they're nice and friendly, but we got scammed. Online medicine works just as well as the ones they sell there and much cheaper. Read Less

I have 3 large dogs and during hurricane Irma - our house had no power and no water - it was extremely hot and the dogs were having a really difficult time with the heat. I called Shores Animal Hospital to see if they had power and could bring my dogs into some AC! They told me to come right in and I did. To say that the entire staff was professional and friendly is an understatement!!! These people love animals and are over and above kind. My dogs were given baths and had their nails done, the staff even let me stay in an empty room and use their wifi while I was waiting. We have used Shores for the last 20 years with our pups . Dr Ortiz is our favorite. she is kind and caring to our old pup, that we love with all our hearts, so that is appreciated.  I was willing to cough up the $$ for dental care but they checked and said her gums and teeth were in good shape and it was not needed at this time.  Who does that? My father is a veterinarian in Ohio, so moving to Florida and having to put my trust in someone made me very nervous. The staff is a group of wonderful people. They truly have your pets best interest at heart and don't try to run you up on charges (which is important with two curious goldens). I called the vet immediately after my dog had gotten bit at the dog park. They were able to take my infortmation and make me an appointment within minutes. There was hardly a wait once I got there and they took the very best care of him. I was impressed with the receptionist as well as the Doctor herself. Went in on 8/19/16. My dog Mocha had given birth to her pups, but couldn't pass the last one on her own. I called and they got her in RIGHT AWAY! The doctor thought he was going to have to perform a C-Section, but decided to NOT GIVE UP by removing the pup without surgery. I was hoping S.A.H would be my dachshund's new vet clinic but after taking him to get his nails trimmed, his experience was very traumatizing. The 2 techs were extremely rough, choking him and managed to make him bleed 2x & then couldnt find the quikstop med immed, I had to hold his nails with a napkin. They were both telling him forcefully No! & Stop! I am very shocked to see this is how they handle their patients, especially the small ones. The tech lady was telling me I shouldnt console my dog during his nail trimming. Well maybe I wouldnt have to if she wasnt choking him, I should have just left then. I was a vet tech for 2 yrs & how they acted was very out of line. Needless to say, the front desk girls didnt charge me for the techs to torture my dog. Looks like I'll be going to a vet clinic where the techs ACTUALLY like animals & arent trying to restrain them like prisoners & btw, when I was waiting to be seen, I could hear everything the techs were saying bout another cat patient, "chika" & how "crazy" you thought the owner was.. nice job ! They forgot to record a heart worm test done on my dog. Later, when I needed to get their approval for a medication, they denied saying they needed to run the test first. They could have made it right by offering another free test for marginal cost on their end. Instead the receptionist was rude and belittling. She told me I would have to come back in and pay for the test a second time. We will never take our pets back here. Read Less

Since our three elderly rescued cats moved to Florida three years ago, Dr. Seufert has been our veterinarian. In Sept 2014 she saved our Richard's life by flagging the first sign of a very aggressive cancer at his wellness check. It was a subtle change in his blood work and has enabled us to treat him early. We had hoped for a golden year for him. 16 months later: Richard is now 16 years old, undergoing chemo therapy, and enjoying his life greatly. Shores has access to the latest equipment and diagnostic tests. Completely recommend this vet!! My cat has long history of upper respitory issues. So I called b/c he has been sneezing alot, meowing alot and wiping his eyes that are runny. He needed to be put to sleep, but they were so helpful and even took him out of my car/brought the box he was in out to my car for me (I had my infant with me). This vet has been around forever and really gives back. I volunteer for a local rescue and I think most people would be shocked with the volume of support that Shores extends to help these groups. Not really happy with the staff at front counter. Very expensive, also had to bring my dog in for the same issue 2 days in a row. They tried giving my dog the same meds 2 days in a row, the doctors were not in sync, they werent on the same page.. They kept me waiting way to long for an existing issue.. Not happy! My dog was very sick and could not hold down any food. The attending veterinarian instructed me to give him for different types of pills in specialty dog food. Even they were unable and unsuccessful in getting him to eat the food with the four pills but yet I was to do this for the next 14 days.  I think they are all about how much they can bill the patient. As a camp counselor for Oak Hall School's Future Vets camp program, I was able to tour the hospital with our campers. The veterinarian, technicians and office staff at Shores were amazing with the kids and they were able to learn all about how the hospital works and what everyone's job is there. They learned about physical exams, preventative care and even got to use a microscope to identify different types of skin mites. The staff members were all fun, educational and professional and provided a great experience for our camp program, and the hospital tour was a great experience. Thank you! Read Less

I have been a loyal customer of Shores Animal Hospital since the early 1990's. I have been happy with them until recently. I took my dog in for a routine appointment, while I was there I mentioned that I needed some Sentinel Spectrum. When I checked out I told the receptionist that I needed Sentinel Spectrum. She stated that they no longer carry that. I told her I need flea medicine. She gave me Nexguard. It was $127 a package. I thought about it for a few days and decided it was too expensive and I wanted to go back to using the advantage. I went back to the vet 3 days later. I was told that I could not return medication once It was purchased.She said due to limited space that they only carry Nexguard and Confortis. She said that they carry other options online. I told her good customer service would have been to inform me on Saturday that they only carry a limited amount in the office but there are more choices online. And there is no sign posted in the office that you can't return medications.I will change vets now. Veterinarians in this town are a dime a dozen. Read Less

Be prepared to wait FOREVER! I've only gone twice for annual shots and check for my dog but was there for 3 hours both times and 75% of that time was waiting. 15 -20 minutes wait in the waiting room then you finally go back and wait 15-20 for a vet tech, they leave then you wait 30 minutes for the vet, then they leave but say they'll be right back. AVOID. When I adopted my lab mix I took him here. Everything was great until he was about 7-8 months he started developing an awful rash all over his body with serious hair loss.My frustration grew when I was making weekly visits for them to run the same tests with no answers. I can't afford to take my dog to the vet every week, sorry.They were convinced my dog had a flea allergy even though he was on anti flea & tick medicine and I had never seen a flea on him or anywhere in my home!Finally.. I switched to another vet in Gainesville, and after the first visit they cleared up the rash with an antibiotic that was FREE at publix and diagnosed my dog with staff. Read Less

My family has been taking our cats here since I can remember (I'm 20 so approx. 15 or so years). We have an 11 year old cat who has asthma/allergies (they still can't tell us which 10 years later) and has been getting steroid shots every 3-6 months since he was about 2 yo. for his wheezing attacks. Every time we take him we must clearly specify that we JUST want the steroid shot (about $60), if not then they WILL charge you for a health exam, and advise that he needs every money-wringing procedure and vaccine that could possibly apply to your specific animal.Here's the background story, Recently I adopted a kitten named Patron (yes, like the tequilla. no, not like the customer at a restaurant). I got Patron all the way from a Crystal River pet rescue however they didn't tell me that he had a history of URI (upper respiratory infection), he also still needed 2 more rounds of vaccines and rabies shots (that they did tell me). I also have another 10 yo. cat named Magic, whom contracted the URI from Patron since I didn't know he was infectious when I brought him home. Magic, the poor baby, also got some kind of terrible eye infection in both eyes around the same time, having just recovered from some unknown sores on his legs.Here's where I started loosing faith in Shores. I took Patron in for his 8 wk shots and paid for a bundle for both 8 and 12wk shots all to be paid upfront and was told that his 12wk shots would not cost anything (more on this later). While I was there I mentioned Patron's sneezing and mucus-y discharge, they explained the URI, prescribed an antibiotic and we went on our way. A week later I had to bring in Magic for some sores on his legs they gave me a variety of possible reasons for them but no straight answer, I asked about his cloudy/runny eyes and Dr. Shores told me he just had cataracts b/c he's old, but my cat is just barely 10 which is only middle age. Then I took him home (with $100 bottle of topical antibiotic). A week later his sores had healed but suddenly over the course of a weekend his eyes had gotten  swollen and pussy and the poor guy had rubbed his face and his front legs raw and bloody trying to get all the uncomfortable goop out. I had to wait until first thing Monday morning(Shores is closed on weekends) to schedule an emergency appointment (which, by the way, meant "squeezing" him in 10 minutes before they close for my cat whom is quite possibly going blind in both eyes!!!). I saw a different vet than Dr. Shores and she said that he had a major infection in both eyes, she chalked it up to an allergic reaction from eating the new kittens food, she also was the one who told me that the cloudiness wasn't cataracts because my cat is not that old and it was clearly a sign that something was wrong. I got a tiny tube of $100 topical cream to put on his eyes and the same liquid antibiotic for the URI as Patron got. 3 weeks later his URI is gone and the eye infection but his eyes are still cloudier than ever, he looks almost blind. This I can live with, at least the things they prescribed, albeit very expensive, worked for the most part. Yes I'm peeved about the eye problems they should've caught but hey, everyone makes mistakes. However, the aforementioned "bundle" for Patron's shots, yeah total bs! I go in 3 weeks later for his last few boosters and rabies and I'm charged $70! I told them there was a mistake but the receptionist said that they don't offer a bundle plan for just 8 and 12wk shots, "we only offer the entire 6, 8, AND 12wk shot plan for kittens", so I had to pay $70 on top of the $100 bundle I thought I was receiving. If this is how they treat 15+ year loyal customers then I'm finding a new vet because that is an outrage!)The only reason they don't get 1 star is because they gave me the URI antibiotic for free but I had to go get it filled from a publix pharmacy (I guess Shores has some kind of deal with Publix for discounts if they use their pharmacies or something). The only reason we stayed with them for this long is that they are the ONLY half decent vet in the NW side of town. Shores only cares about the money they can make off of you. And forget about working out any sort of payment plan for people like me (broke college students who are just trying to keep their unfortunate pets healthy). Because of this I had to leave my older cat with my parents because I can't afford the pet rent for 2 cats at my apartment. Read Less

Do not trust these negative reviews!!!!! I grew up in Gainesville, and Shores was around since my childhood. I never used the place, however, until I became an adult. They offer great services. I have NEVER had to wait long to see a vet, and the vets have taken great care of my dog. On my first visit, I was actually traveling from out-of-town; I had moved away from Gainesville. My poor puppy had terrible motion sickness during the trip home for Christmas. I made an appointment and took her to Shores. They gave me excellent recommendations and a prevention plan -- even though I was not a regular. They also managed to squeeze me in during a busy holiday season.Once I moved back to Gainesville, they also welcomed me. I got lost going to my first appointment - because they built a brand new facility -- which is quite nice and clean! But they still accommodated both of my dogs. They are excellent.I once boarded my dogs at a HIGHLY RATED facility located in a former plantation in SW Gainesville. They checked my dogs' charts and said they were all current on their vaccines. Unfortunately, the younger one was due for bordetella in about 3 weeks - which they neglected to tell me. When I picked them up, he was coughing like crazy. I took him to Shores, and I had to pleasure of getting Dr. Shores himself. The man is amazing. He walks in a room and communicates with animals. They responded to him as if they were under a spell. He heard my dog cough, looked in his throat, and immediately diagnosed the problem. Some vets normally give oral antibiotics in these moments, but he gave my dog an injection and sent us home with additional antibiotics. The cough became more moderate by the end of the day. And they called several times to see how he was doing. The people on here who rate Shores low have very old reviews or seem very snobby. Took my 3.5 months old puppy here to get his first ever exam. The vet just put the stethoscope on him for half a second and said he was fine. I asked the vet to look if the little peanut things I felt around his testicle area were in fact testicles. Vet said they were lymph nodes and told me my dog's testicles should be taken out of his abdomen....although when he palpated and couldn't find them in the abdomen. We had a long discussion about why he should get the surgery (cancer vs. surgical risk, how they might have to make a couple incisions to locate the testicles, etc). Well I Googled this testicle thing before I went there and the info I got said dogs testicles can drop up to about 6 months of age so I didn't make an appointment for surgery. When we left my fiance said he was sure the little peanut things were testicles; they were just really small since the dog was still young. I was worried sick about his testicles so two weeks later I decided to  take my dog to another vet for a second opinion and a second set of vaccine. The new vet said give it time since he was only 4 months old. One of the vaccine records from Shore was wrong too but we got that sorted out at the new vet's office. As for the testicles, he's now 6 months old and the testicles have dropped. The little peanut things have grown into testicles. If I listened to the Shore's vet I would have put my puppy at risk for an unnecessary procedure, pain, and expense....other than that I'm a little perplexed that a trained vet didn't know the difference between lymph nodes and balls. I went to shores for about 8 years with my doggies. I FINALLY switched to Suburban Animal  Hospital this past summer. Going to Shores usually goes like this, you sign in and in about 10 min they take you back to a room with your pet. Then you wait for 20-30 min before one of their distracted looking vets come in and hurry their way through the visit. I found the vets all 4 that I seen over the years to be unfriendly. Everything came to a head this last spring when I took my 16 1/2 yr old Daschund in to get her teeth cleaned ( AS THE VET ADVISED!) I should have known better because this is like taking a 90 yr old to be put asleep to have their teeth cleaned!!! My doggie never came out of it right.  I had to put her down within a month. I am so angry that the vet would advise me to do that to my baby. In my opinion Shores is ALL about $$$$$ they truly dont care about an animals health or they would have never advised me to do that!! In general, I found they were always trying to upsale and it was all about money.So I switched to suburban off Newberry Road! They are amazing! NICE office staff, NICE caring vets that take time. I love Shores! All I have to do is ask my dog is she wants to go to Shores, and she is at the garage door with her tail wagging. The office staff is wonderful, and the techs are just as wonderful. I normally have my dog see Dr.Stirn, but every once and a while she sees Dr. Shores. Both guys are great and so helpful. Dr. Shores has been in practice for a long time, which is why the office is old. I've never felt like I couldn't ask them questions or concerns I've had. Read Less

Definitely one of the better vets on the NW side of town. They lose one star for the layout of the office. The rooms are not private; they are open to the pharmacy and lab. Controlling my big dog when he can see and hear all of the waiting room and pharmacy hustle and bustle is tough. They lose a half of a star for the lack of thorough exams on both of my dogs. I've seen two different veterinarians there and neither examined my dogs as thoroughly as the vets at Butler Plaza Animal Hospital. They also seemed rushed and I didn't feel like I had the opportunity to ask questions. The rushed feeling is amplified due to the layout as well. They lose another half of a star for always making me wait at least 10 minutes in the waiting room and another 15 minutes to see a vet even if I have an appointment ...doesn't matter what time of day. Update: 11/2009They lost another star and my business when my dog had major health problems. He was misdiagnosed 3 times and $490 later. Granted, they did get one problem correctly. I finally took him back to our previous vet to get a very thorough exam, testing, and correct diagnosis for only $120. Wish we had went there to begin with! My choice of vet if you are in the NW side of town.  They office staff are extremely friendly and they take good care of your pets.  The only thing that it lost a star for is that it is hard to get in and out of their office and their office is very old.  But the people definently make up for it.
