Couldn't be more happy with the excellent scare and attention, not only that Cooper has received, but that we've received. The staff is vets and vets students are dedicated, hard working doctors that seem to work around the clock caring for our pets. The facility is top notch, they have nothing to envy a human hospital. The state of Florida couldn't have asked for a better hospital for their ailing pets. Read Less

Regarding small animal clinic:  Person answering phone refuses to listen to what is being said and then gets sarcastic that the conversation is lengthy just to obtain the most basic clarity.  Your dying, loved pet is treated as an inconvenience and deserted to die overnight.  The vet is shocked that anyone would love your pet.  This is because the vet spent years killing animals just like your pet so he could publish research papers.  While your pet is dying, the staff harasses you non-stop for very exactly and correctly following their own instructions to park where the life and death emergencies park.  Then because you had a pet that had a life and death emergency and you parked in the emergency parking area as they instructed, they then launch an investigation after labeling you uncooperative (was in exam room with vet and dying animal so did not continue with phone call when they called to demand I move my vehicle then and there out of the emergency parking lot) and threaten your other remaining non-dead animals with denial of care if you should ever decide to bring them.  So they would leave your pets to die because nobody told the desk guy that when you say you have an emergency, that means you have an emergency, and are following the parking instructions of the person on the phone you spoke to before arriving.  So I now take my remaining loving and also extremely expensive pedigreed rabbits (cost me thousands of dollars to buy, plus care). to Blue Pearl in Tampa instead.  UF small animal clinic is a death sentence paired with abuse stupidity and failure. So far Blue Pearl has been, over time, provided by me approximately ten thousand dollars for exams, medicine, diagnostic tests and imaging.  UF small animal clinic could have had that money but they don't since they stink utterly at what they do and are dishonestly evil.  Apparently they live to avoid paying attention long enough to absorb reality, and then accuse anybody of anything.  Accusing people is not the same as Providing Emergency Veterinary Care.  If you need honest intelligent Emergency Vet Care for exotic animals, Blue Pearl in Tampa is the place.  UF small animal clinic is so idiotic that when you ask where emergencies are to park, they have to stop and waste loads of time on clarifying that a restaurant is a place that serves food. Did the management ever apologize for all this?  Oh heck NO!  And the person answering the phone felt this was a Perfect time to to yet again provide sarcastic, rude remarks, minus actually listening. I brought my one year old Great Dane in for a prophylactic Gastropexy. My experience was amazing. I dropped her off on a Monday - the woman who checked me in was efficient, thorough, and personable. I was immediately sent to a room where I was greeted by a student. He was great; he answered all my questions and explained what was going to happen. The vet soon came in and was just as friendly, but more thorough, explaining as much as I wanted to hear about the upcoming surgery.   I left feeling like my dog was in good hands. The student / vet called me several times that day and the next to update me on her status and explain what to expect next. The next day my mom had to pick her up (I live in Orlando and couldn't take another day off work.). My mom had a similar experience - everyone was friendly and explained her aftercare thoroughly. The student even helped my mom get my 115 lb drugged dog into her car. I brought my dog home that night and she had no issues. We only gave her a little bit of pain medication - her incision healed perfectly and I was able to go to my local vet to get the sutures removed. He also commented on how great the small incision had healed. I highly recommend the UF Small Animal Hospital. Hopefully I won't need to be back, but if my dog ever has any medical issues, the 2 hour drive for me is easily worth the comfort and reassurance I get knowing my dog is in good hands. Read Less

I have nothing but glowing things to say about UF Small Animal Hospital. We rushed two hours away to Gainesville with our sick cat, at the recommendation of our Orlando vet. The staff was welcoming and friendly. They took her back and began evaluating her. That part took a while, but there were several critical animals that had to be stabilized first. She had to stay for 8 days, to include surgery and recovery. She was on death's door, but Dr. Fox and the entire team saved her life. I am very happy with the services provided. Yes, it was expensive, but I can't put a price on my fur babies. Thank you, UF! Read Less

All of the vet students and Drs that worked with my dog were excellent. Caring, compassionate but most important is the highest quality of care at reasonable cost. I've taken pets to other specialty clinics this year and in recent years and from my experience these people have everything I'm looking for when my pets have hard to a diagnose illness or need a specialist. I've used UF for oncology, surgery, internal medicine and emergency care in the past year and there is consistency in their excellence. I'd give them 100 stars. Read Less

Words can't describe how highly I recommend UF small animal hospital. After multiple disappoints I finally decided to drive the distance and make an apt with UF radiation oncology. From the receptionist at the front desk to the entire oncology team (especially Dr. Castro) Boulder and I felt extremely comfortable and happy with the care and treatment he received! I had to leave him during the week for treatments and I think he had more fun staying with his new friends than he does at home! I was kept up to date and informed every step of the way and loved the morning and night phone calls to tell me about his day. I felt he received so much love and compassion and really was in the absolute best hands he could be. I could go on and on but you get the point! THANK YOU UF for going above and beyond! Read Less

Outstanding! My husband and I commuted from Miami so that Dr. Whitley in the Department of Ophthamology could operate on our fragile, nine-year-old, six pound Affenpinscher. Everything about the experience was first rate. The treatment team is professional and kind. The ancillary staff members are supportive and helpful. The facility is beautiful and clean. My husband and I have worked in hospitals for decades and were extremely impressed with every aspect of the care Chloe received. I was terrified of the need for general anesthesia, but had such faith in Dr. Whitley, who had such faith in the Department of Anesthesiology, that everything went how Dr. Whitley thought best and Chloe came out of it all, thankfully, just fine. Dr. Boss and vet student Wayne Garcia kept us informed every step of the way. There's so much to be gained from receiving treatment in an academic setting where the staff members are aware of the latest scientific literature and the equipment is state-of-the-art. Several other pet owners had also driven hours to receive treatment there and everyone encountered was grateful for the help received. Thank you, team! Read Less

Apologizes in advance for the long review, but I cant say enough of how amazing UF Small Animal Hospital is. After my 8yr old boxer was diagnosed with a Pitutary Brain tumor, I immediately started trying to find him a radiologist to get to. I went to Cancer Vets in Bonita Springs and was highly disappointed, as they were cold, impersonal, didnt review his MRI or talk in detail about his condition. I frantically tried to make an appointment with UF, as it was the week before Memorial Day. They didnt have an opening for the Radiologist, however, they got me in with the Oncology Medical team. From the moment I walked in to the front desk, I was comforted and saw the care the entire staff had. The young lady that took us to the room was so engaging with my dog and loving on him the entire time. Then the first Vet Student, Michael, came in, and again, the compassion was evident. My dog immediately took to him! Then Dr. Fox came in and spent over an hour with us, explaining everything! She educated us on his condition, what we could expect and then what treatment plans we could take. She ensured we were comfortable with the decision I was making. From then on, I knew this was the place I would trust with my dog. Fast-forward almost 5 weeks, 20rounds of radiation, multiple 3hr trips to pick him up for the weekends, he is home! On his last day there, I even teared up because of how thankful I was and am of everything they have done. They called me a minimum of 2x per day to update me, made arrangements for me to have him dropped off on the weekends and multiple calls from the vets to talk through his progress. He has a follow-up appointment in the next few weeks and I know he will be excited to see his friends again! Thank you for taking care of my little man and providing me peace of mind that he was in the best possible hands. I would recommend everyone and anyone to go to your facility to get support! I know I left out several pivotal people in this review, however, they were all absolutely remarkable. I truly cant say enough of how much I appreciate you all. Read Less

I just recently found out that my cat pretzel which is in the Dermatology research under dr. Santoro was prescribed a medication by the name of bravecto for flea and tick prevention was probably the worst thing to give to this cat which has a major sensitive skin issue. I'm sure you can imagine how upset I was when I found out that this was probably the worst thing to put on her. Not only that pretzel has been getting progressively worse with no positive result. Also I've spent close to $1,500 trying to figure out exactly what is wrong with her. By that I mean is it a bacteria or something a little more serious than that? Read Less

My 7 week old Siberian Husky had her "third" eye lacerated by my cat (it was a very unfortunate accident). We had planned a trip down to Ocala when this happened minutes before we are set to leave, it didn't look so bad but quickly got worse the next day. Being a late Saturday night, most vets were closed. I decided to call the UF Pet Emergency Treatment Services. I explained what happened and she informed me, to save money and time, it would be better to take her straight to the UF Small Animal Hospital to see an Ophthalmologist. Of course at this point I knew it was serious and was very worried for my new fur baby. I called the emergency line at UF Animal Hospital the next morning and they told me to come right in. She had her eye examined and figured the best course if action was surgery. I was very worried as she is only a 7 week old puppy but they made me feel comfortable and at ease about the procedure. I dropped her off Monday morning for the surgery. They called me a before and after the surgery with updates, which definitely helped with the anxiety. They definitely care a great deal about you and your animal. All in all, the surgery was a wonderful success. They were able to suture her third eye lid back together, which had to be a very delicate procedure. I can't even begin to express how impressed I am with this Animal Hospital, the friendly staff and doctors and the amazing surgeon's! They went above and beyond for our little Athena. She's is great spirits and recovering like a champ! I recommend this Veterinary Hopsital to anyone who has a animal emergency. Thank you so much for taking care of Athena Read Less

We got terrific service because they had helped her earlier. The staff was very warm and concerned. They help me understand how to take care of her for the remainder of my nursing. I have been here about 7 times over the past two months and while not every experience has been terrible, I really wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. On the first visit they make everything so proper and they do the exam in front of you and thoroughly discuss the issues your pet has. Every exam after that is really just a joke. You take your pet back to the exam room and then they take the pet away to do some behind the scenes exam in the back that always takes at least two hours and then they charge you 2x the amount a regular vet would charge. Almost every recheck exam there is a different student that doesn’t know the history of your pet and you have to re-explain the situation every time, even when they have all the history typed up on their little papers. I don’t think they study them very well. Extremely expensive, $80+ for just a recheck exam that I don’t even get to see happen. The worst part about this entire experience is that my fur baby ended up needing surgery and the doctor told me the surgery would be quick and he made it sound like a 3 or 4 hour ordeal. I decided to stay and wait because I live in Ocala and it made no sense to drive all the way home just to come back in a few hours. Meanwhile I waited in my car and in their lobby for 6 hours just for them to tell me that I can’t pick my pet up until 5pm - 9 hours after I got there. I would have gone home had I known the surgery would take the entire day. I wasted my whole day and all they could tell me was that they would call me as soon as they could. Terrible communication. The only reason I give two stars is because some of the people are very nice and the place is nice as well. Wish I would have known all of this before giving them all of my money. None of my four kitties will be returning here. Read Less

We had an incredible experience with Dr. Souza and the medical team at the Small Animal Hospital. Our 12 year-old dachshund was diagnosed with an extremely rare adrenal gland tumor but Dr. Souza was intimately familiar with the condition. We went through with surgery and I felt my pet was in the best hands before, during, and after the procedure. Two weeks out and our sweet pet seems to be back to his old self for hopefully many more years to come. My only critique of the experience is that the scheduling and check-out procedures seemed to be an afterthought. We could not get scheduled for an exam and imaging on the same day even if we put a deposit on the imaging time so it was not a waste for the hospital. Surgery was only done on certain days and the scheduling team had no concept of what the medical team was doing or empathy for someone traveling from out of town to line up all of these items to make the stay in town as short as possible for both the pets and the humans. If this could have been handled in a better way the entire experience would have been flawless. Overall, the medical care seemed to be the absolute best we could get in the state and I would recommend you get here if your pet's life is on the line. Read Less

Our English bulldog (Zeus) had been fighting tail pocket infections for almost two years. We tried everything our vet and the bulldog world suggested. Our boy could not beat it despite twice a day cleanings, internal and external antibiotic treatments, etc. Our vet Dr Young referred us to the UF hospital as he had determined our "bully" had the dreaded corkscrew tail that was the root of the problem. We traveled 2 hours to the UF hospital a week ago last Thursday for a late morning evaluation and tests. Upon arrival we were welcomed and checked in. Within minutes we were in the exam room where we went over Zeus' history and met with a student intern, Carle and a vet who informed us they needed to keep Zeus for more tests. We left him at noon and picked him up at 4:00. When we picked him up we met Dr Case who explained to us that surgical removal of part of Zeus' tail was necessary. He fully disclosed the risks associated with the surgery and anesthesia. He told us he could schedule the surgery for the next morning or we could think about it and bring Zeus back later if we decided to go with the surgery - i.e. No pressure. We opted for the surgery the next morning. We dropped Zeus off for the surgery and later in the day Dr Case called us and told us while prepping for the anesthesia he found Zeus had an elongated soft pallet, that if trimmed down would help him breathe better in the future and wanted our okay to shave down the pallet while he was already under anesthesia for the tail surgery, still within our cost estimate. We agreed. Zeus was kept overnight for observation after the dual surgery, was kept in an aerated room, and we received 3 calls updating us on his recovery condition. We picked him up the next morning and brought him home. In the first few days we had some concerns and called the hospital always getting immediate sound responses. He is now about 10 days post operation and doing great. I can't say enough good about how professional everyone at the hospital were, how caring they were, and how successful they were with correcting a very difficult problem for our boy. I recommend them highly for any medical procedure you may need to face with you family pet. Thank you UFSAH!!! Read Less

Today I took my baby for a consultation. Was extremely well attended, from the receptionists to every single person that talked to me, students, assistants and the vets were fantastic. Explained to me everything about my dog's condition and the most important, they were very honest. Said he would not benefit from a recommended surgery. I will definitely be back, next week have another appointment for alternative treatments. I recommend this place to anyone that needs professional and honest diagnostics. The place is also fantastic, state of the art, so beautiful, clean and modern. Read Less

Last December I rushed my dog to the vet hospital with a severely distended belly. Luckily, her stomach did not flip - she was diagnosed with a GI disease that obstructs her bowels due to protein and other dietary sensitivity. The fix was simple, feed her a hydrolyzed protein diet in which a prescription with unlimited refills was written by the UF physician for Purina HA. For the last year, every two months or so I would call ahead and pick up a 25 lb. bag of dog food... until now. I made my usual phone call and to my horror, I was told that since my dog had not been seen at the UF clinic in a year they would not be filling the script without a new prescription, mind you, the script had unlimited refills. So, I called my regular veterinarian and had them fax a new script to the UF clinic. I called and they acknowledged that they received it and would put the order in and a note that I wanted a call when the food was ready. I never received a call so I called the clinic the next day only to learn (1) they did not have record of the new script in their fax log and (2) they would not honor any other veterinarian's script - UF had to see the dog themselves. Now, I don't know how her disease would have just disappeared over the last year or why the UF vets are so much smarter than any other, but that's what was implied. So, here I am staring at my bloated dog because she no longer has easy access to the food that she needs and is being fed the best store bought food I could find. So disappointing. This speaks volumes. Cha-ching $$$ Read Less

The UF small animal hospital is a wonderful place to bring a pet.  From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by friendly faces who only want the best for your pet.I have used them several times now, from making general appointments to seeing a specialist.  Yes, that's right, they have specialists here!  We are so lucky to have this here in Gainesville!  Not only that, but they speak to you with full information and educate you on what is going on with your pet.  They help you make informed decisions and let you know there are several options for treatment.  They are non-profit and you feel how treatment and not money is what motivates them!  Of course it's a teaching hospital, so you first see a student (who is always very knowledgeable) who talks to you in depth.  That student then talks to the doctor and the both will eventually see you.   We knew they usually take the pet back for the exam, but we asked if the exam could be done inf ront of us and they fully understood our concern and obliged.  At every step, we received the best customer service AND the best care! Wow, 2 for one!  The best part about this place is they have seen so many different cases that they are knowledgeable about so much.  Not only that, they have review meetings with other staff and can discuss your case if it's a complicated situation.  So you're getting the best care maybe in the country! My dog was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My vet recommended an oncologist in Ft Lauderdale. Their initial exam and prognosis was not good. My friend recommended I get a second opinion at UF. That saved my dogs life. The first visit we met with the surgeon and he recommended surgery and did the CT scan. The whole visit was amazing. The people were nice and knowledge, the surgeon stayed and let me ask as many questions as I wanted. I never felt rushed or like he was trying to hurry me. I felt extremely confident in his opinion. I opted for the surgery , which we had on Thursday. My dog did well and is now home recovering. The surgery came in under the estimate and the balance was refunded. This place is top notch, the care these students and residents and staff show is amazing. They are all dedicated to the well being of the animals and humans that love them. I absolutely love this place. My now 3 year old Blue Heeler began limping about a year and a half ago out of nowhere. His regular vet tooks xrays and said it was his back. After a month of bed rest with no improvement, I decided to go here to the Integrative Medicine department for physical therapy/rehab. Shiloh's first visit was stressful and expensive (Orthopedic exam, Neurologist exam, CT scan with sedation) but proved to be incredibly valuable and necessary. They diagnosed him with bilateral elbow dysplasia and recommended medications for pain until I mentioned I would like to keep him off the NSAIDs for as long as possible due to their side effects. They happily recommended numerous supplements that have helped keep him active and able to do what he loves (long hikes, Frisbee and playing with his sister). The package deal they offer for their rehab services for a full day are absolutely the best. We moved a few months ago so I do not know if they have changed the prices but when we went it was $100 a day for a full 8 hours of rehab (swimming, laser, acupuncture, underwater treadmill, etc). I currently work at a vet clinic that offers rehab and they were flabbergasted at that package deal and are now considering something similar. I would 100% recommend UF Small Animal Hospital for all pets, regardless of reason why they need to go! Read Less

We already have the highest possible praise for the large animal hospital after they saved our foal last March 23rd then 8 days later saved another one of our mares that needed an emergency c-section. Not only saving her life but preserved her future fertility! Our 14 1/2 year old maltipoo visited the small animal hospital in the middle of the night with a possible neurological issue. I moved to Gainesville about 2 years ago for graduate school. My puppy started presenting with severe allergies and dermatitis since we moved. I sought for help outside of UF because I believed it to be cheaper and right around the same quality. Not only outside vets were more expensive, but they were not able to help my dog. When I decided to take my dog to UF, the vets were willing to work with me. They spent so much time with me explaining diagnosis and treatment, and they even gave me as many free samples (part of my dog's treatment) as they could to help out a fellow student. They have every specialty in veterinary medicine as we do for humans, they are all heavily involved in research, and they have more accessibility to certain drugs and treatments than other private offices. Overall, these vets are great, very knowledgable, and most likely the ones that taught other vets working around the area. I am extremely happy with my visit to UF and I know my dog is too. Read Less

Amazing experience, state of the art 3 story animal hospital. We were referred to UF by our dog's Neurologist because in order to do a non-invasive biopsy it required for it to be CT-Guided, our local animal hospital can do CT scans but not CT guided Biopsys so we made an appointment and my husband and I drove up to Gainesville to have our senior Jack Russell - Marlin treated.Once we checked in at the hospital we were told to sit anywhere in the large waiting area which has plenty of chairs and several TVs, it even has an Einstein Brothers. We didn't have to wait long, our "client liaison" came up to us, introduced herself and showed us to one of the many examination rooms. The examination rooms are fully equipped and impeccable. We had Kelsey (one of the students doing clinical rounds) first come to review Marlin's history, she was very sweet and gentle with Marlin, once she completed her examination we had to wait for the Doctor. We were extremely fortunate to have Dr. Kristina Bowles, she is very knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable with the proposed procedure. Also, once Marlin was admitted for the procedure Kelsey and Dr. Bowles both called us several times through out the day to communicate Marlin's status as they knew we were eager to know how he was doing. We found the hospital to be extremely well coordinated, everyone was professional, knowledgeable and friendly.  Not only did we receive superior service at UF, but the cost of all the procedures were less than what many private hospitals charge in South Florida. UF has a huge staff of Doctors and Specialists (Cardiologists, Oncologists, Neurologists, rare cases, internists, etc.) to go over cases and do differentials so you know your pet is in good hands.

Read Less

Had my dogs surgery here, liver shunt, she is a 3.5-4 lbs tiny Yorkie. We drove all the up here from Port Orange. They are very organized, very patient, they explain everything real well, well educated, very supportive, and they aren't too expensive. Multiple people were there for the surgery, so many opinions, which probably helps reduce bad calls or decisions, all though they do gather the day before to plan the surgery. They called many times to keep me up to date, and many times to check in pixie after, they always addressed all our concerns. The surgery was a high risk surgery, so it felt good that my baby was in good hands.Love this hospital already and definitely recommend it. After sending up-to-date records and expressly telling the admitting student what we wanted done we wound up with an expensive bill (Pt. registration Fee?!) with nothing accomplished on behalf of our pet.  Sent him home with no relief for his painful hip arthritis and they want us to wait 3 weeks for a dental appointment, when they knew he had a painful tooth lesion. Our old man had painful knots in his hair we specifically asked be removed which was not done.  The student we spoke with stated, "We are not groomers" but promised to clip when we brought him back 3 wks. latter...what are these students being taught?!  Best vets we ever had did it ALL without being asked because they Cared for the animals well being!  This is the first time we have brought a pet to a veterinarian and got the pet back worse off than when it went in?! Read Less

I recently returned with another one of my babies for cataract surgery and I can not say enough good things about how amazing everyone was with me and with Cody. Dr. Hamor spent an endless amount of time with me explaining all the pros and cons of the surgery and took every possible precaution to be certain Cody was healthy enough for the surgery. The entire team involved in Cody's care during his stay and at each appointment, were compassionate, patient, extremely through and so very kind and understanding.

Read Less
