I want to preface this review by noting my girlfriend and I have a 50lb, medium-energy, 3-year-old dog named Mika who we picked up from the humane society last year. She was a stray with no signs of abuse but was malnourished since she was on the street for so long. She's friendly, loves to play fetch, and run with other dogs at the dog park. We found great reviews about Coastal online so decided to use their veterinary services. Once learning of their boarding and daycare services, we gave those a try as well. Hospital - 5 Stars - Always fast, friendly service with the highest level of care for our dog. These people care about the health and well being of my dog as much as I do.Pet Resort - 2 stars - see belowDaycare - 2 stars - see belowI've had my dog at Coastal's daycare facility 3 times over the past 4 months, and the results were unsatisfactory.The first time we brought Mika to daycare was for an evaluation. This evaluation determines if she has the temperament to play with other dogs and also which group of dogs she'll be grouped with. She passed her evaluation and was able to stay at the facility the rest of the day. We assumed she was playing and running around all afternoon because she scarfed down her dinner and fell asleep as soon as we got her home. Seemed like everything was going to work out great.A few days later we left town for a long weekend so we boarded her at the pet resort. We made sure she was attending daycare all 4 days she was boarded, didn't want her cooped up in the pen all day. We picked her up on the way home and obviously after 4 days she was excited to see us and be home. After a couple days we noticed a few large lumps, bruising, and what was eventually diagnosed as hives. I called Coastal about the issues so they told me to bring her in for a check-up. Before visiting the hospital I stopped in at the resort facility and asked them to cover the cost of the visit since our dog was fine when we dropped her off and the issues were a direct result of leaving her under their care. They responsibly agreed to waive the appointment fee as long as I would pay for any prescriptions needed. I thought that was fair so we brought her back to Coastal's pet hospital. We learned that the hives could have been from a number of things like the detergents the resort uses, other pen/daycare surface materials or cleaners, stress, etc., but was easily treatable with prednisone so there was nothing to worry about. There was no explanation offered for the large lumps or bruising but when you put a bunch of dogs together for a few days things are bound to happened. After a week, the hives went away, the bruise swelling reduced, and everything was back to normal.Two days ago, I brought Mika back for a daycare visit so she could get some exercise. We've been busy and haven't been able to get her out of the crate as much as we wanted. Yesterday we noticed what looked like a bug but on her shoulder near her neck - very red, almost bleeding. This morning I noticed that spot has not turned into about a dozen raised spots which more closely resemble minor bite marks or hives again. So needless to say I won't be bringing Mika back to the daycare center. I'm not sure if Mika is the problem, maybe she just doesn't do well in that environment. Like I said she is a rescue, but she has never had any noticeable issues or signs of abuse / mental anguish, so as far as I'm concerned she conducts herself like a normal dog without any major sensitivities.I don't like that I don't get to see what goes on at the daycare facility. When we dropped her off the first time for an evaluation we asked for a tour of the facility but weren't allowed because of security/legal issues with other dogs in the yard, which I understand. I look for Mika on Coastal's Facebook and Instagram because they post daycare pictures each day. Unfortunately she's never been featured in a post. Ultimately, I have no idea if Mika is playing with other dogs her size/energy level, in the yard or in a pen all day, or even getting the exercise we're expecting. Maybe a report by the daycare could help, but I know there are a lot of dogs to look after so it likely isn't feasible.With all that being said, thanks for reading through my experiences. We love this vet! Our pup doesn't always "play well" with other dogs. They normally put us in a room when there's lots of dogs waiting. Also, Bob is absolutely fantastic back in the grooming area. All I can say is WOW!!! I was very surprised at just how attentive and loving every single staff member was towards my dog! It was her first visit since I adopted her and I figured she'd be scared to death. Boy, was I wrong! They had her in the floor rolled over giving her belly rubs, hugs, and treats. Then to top that off, Dr. Avery actually got in the floor and played with her while examining her! Dr. Avery sat and listened to all of my questions and actually took the time to answer every single question before we left. Absolutely the best pet boarding place in the area. I can't speak on the veterinary services that are attached to this location but it does give you that added sense of security that comes with knowing that God forbid something happens to your furry friend, that there is a vet right there to help.This place takes really good care of my Italian Greyhound Thor. He is 15 and needs a little extra care. My wife and I feel comfortable leaving him here in the capable and caring hands of this boarding house. They aren't cheap- that is my only gripe, but this is one of those things that you definitely get what you pay for. Read Less

I give this place one star because when I came in with close to $400 to help my rabbit get better I feel like they did a slack exam and diagnosed her wrong and she died. The second vet ( Exotic Bird Hospital) I went to knew exactly what was wrong with her but she died shortly after I got their. This has to be one of the best veterinary offices in Jax. I've been taking my pup here for about 5 years and she loves it. Dr. Bissell is great, down to Earth and very passionate about animals. Sometimes I think he likes my dog more than me. The office is always clean and the staff is extremely friendly. Don't be afraid to ask for a tour of the whole facility. The new doggy daycare is incredible. They've added an indoor facility for those days that the weather just doesn't cooperate. The boarding considers animals of all ages. There's even a senior area where older dogs can relax in a much quieter environment. Coastal may not be the cheapest vet in town but I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Don't expect to go in and have unnecessary services and vaccines pushed on you either. They will shoot it to you straight and let you know if you don't really need something. We just took our 3.5mo old labrador puppy to her first visit to Coastal. Dr. Avery was INCREDIBLE. You can tell she genuinely cares about the patient. We did not feel rushed , as with most vets. We have two bunnies. We took them to the vet to determine the gender because they are siblings and we didn't want babies. The female vet is suppose to be a rabbit expert per the receptionist. They charged us a 100 for full exams, were told both bunnies were girls to find out the vet was wrong. A month later we found dead babies in the cage. We called to complain and wanted a refund for their exams (100) or discount on getting the male neutered. The vets excuse was "oh well sometimes those testes just pop out". WHAT?!?! I paid 100 for her wrong opinion and had four dead baby bunnies because of her. Never once at the initial appt did she waiver, she was confident both were girls. She had us bring the rabbits back in to determine correct gender when we already knew one was male and one was female. The vet didn't even take the time to come into the room, the tech told us the gender. We did not receive a refund or a discount. We will never take any of our pets there again. Read Less

I can not speak highly enough for the great people working here. It was time for Paco's Nail trimming / Feather Clipping / Beak Shaving again. (Paco is my Moluccan Cockatoo) Normally he actually behaves pretty well during this but today he decided to be extra moody and bratty. It didn't help that I forgot to bring his perch too so he didn't have a solid something to stand on besides my shoulder (ouch). The whole ordeal probably took 45 minutes to do. They were so careful to try to keep him calm, talk to him, put him at ease, take breaks between feet / wings etc to give him time to settle down, yet wise enough to see when he was really stressing, or his typical attention mongering when he has an audience! I have been to vets where they will just throw a towel over the bird, pin them down, and grind away on the bird screaming at the top of it's lungs. Not here, they were so careful and concerned about how he was doing during the procedure, and not just getting us out the door and to the cashier. Every time I have come here they have treated Paco with the greatest of attention and care. You can tell when someone really has compassion and love for animals, or if it's just a job to them. When you consider that I came in for a nail trim, beak trim, feather trim, and full checkup and was able to walk out the door for under 100 dollars, you can't beat that. Some of the other 'bird' places in town will charge you 60 dollars just to walk in the door. At times you may have to wait a few minutes extra because they are in an emergency surgery or something, but the quality of care and compassion they show for your pets, it's well worth it. I have found a veterinarian who truly cares and god willing, will be around for many years to take care of the feathered terror for me. Read Less

My cats went here for veterinarian care and even though my 2.5 year old cat was frequently vomiting she was never given antibiotics. The last time my cats were boarded for a 24 hour period while moving and they came home vomiting. I spent over $500.00 going to another veterinarian same day as pick up from boarding my cat was dehydrated and needed fluids. He ended up with a ear infection from a bath during boarding. My other cat died within a year of staying there. Veterinarians in Jacksonville Florida are as thick as thieves and cover for each other. Do not recommend. Read Less

I have been taking my goldendoodle to the boarding and hospital for a couple of years now. We always request appointments with Dr. Avery, she is so very kind with our dog and loving. The only problem I have is with boarding. You will never see any photos of the larger dogs, and if you do, you probably won't see yours, you will only see their "favorites." The only time I have seen a picture or got an update on him is when I called them and asked for it. Now, they opened a new annex building and the entire process is so confusing. I even had someone on the staff say to another staff member that they "would not go and get my dog because they were going home and it is too far." Therefore, I had to go get him. This is a very delayed review, but I need to finish it. Huge thank you to Drs. Avery & Green as well as the rest of the Coastal Vet family for helping our newest addition get better. We adopted our pup from ACPS and discovered she had pneumonia. They may not be the chepest around, but they were able to help us out with donated medication and were always honest about our options. Throughout her 10 day out-patient care, Addie spent the days at Costal getting the love and hydration she needed while we were at work. Then, when we picked her up, the staff always made sure we were informed on her progress before taking her home. On nights and over the weekend, we felt well-equipped to care for her as ensure her speedy recovery. Since then (just shy of 1 year later), Addie has almost doubled in size, energy, and love. This is the best veterinarian in Jacksonville. Dr. Bissell has been good to both my babies (dogs, cats and fosters) as well as myself. And even when he is unavailable Dr. Jacobs has always been there for me. I have convinced my parents to go here (all the way from Ponte Vedra), and they constantly sing of Dr Avery's praises.They are affordable and do not push for more than you ask. Coastal always follows up with their patients as well. Not just calling to explain the results of a test, but more so to check up on your pet (and their owners in my case) to make sure things are ok. The rest of the staff are always smiling and willing to help in any means necessary. I have been going to Coastal for over five years, and trust me, you will NOT find a better vet in Jacksonville! My wife and I are local physicians living here in Jacksonville and have been going to Coastal Veterinary Hospital on Beach Blvd literally since the day it opened. We couldn't be more pleased with the quality of care our animals consistently receive and the treatment we receive from their staff. Although all of their Providers are extremely well qualified, we personally chose Dr Zachary Bissell to care for our dogs and Dr Scott Jacobs to care for our cats. We are extremely satisfied with both of these Professionals. We can't say enough positive things about them. We highly recommend them to all of our family, friends, patients and clients. As a breeder and a person who also shows animals- I take quality Vet care very seriously and therefore would never refer them to others if I wasn't 100% satisfied. Lastly, in answer to the previous reviewers comment about their rates being slightly higher than others- (although I personally disagree with that comment), let me just remind you- YOU DEFINITELY GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! We just moved to the beach from Kansas City. Our little Boston Terrier, Lola, has been with the same doggie daycare in Kansas City since she was a puppy. She is now almost 7 and we love her like a child. We were thrilled with the entire staff, the accommodations and the experience we have had boarding at Coastal. Lola spent her last weekend there and we received phone calls with updates, her check in and check out was flawless; the staff so obviously loves all animals which is all we could ask for. We could tell she had a great time and seemed to be loved while she was there. This will be our only choice for all of our vet and boarding needs! Read Less

Second what another poster said about the cost being on the higher side of things. On the other hand, the staff is really nice and helpful. Doctor Gray and Doctor Bissell are good. However, if you're going to be seen by Dr. Jacobs, I'd say quickly request someone else! We had a horrible experience and no answers in regards to the issue that we brought our dog in for. He was totally clueless and made negative notes about our dog in his notes that were entirely baseless. When we said we'd be moving and changing vets soon, he recommended a vet in our new area....the vet was a cat specialist. Read Less

I have been going here for about a year and a half now. When I first moved to Jax I had a 2 year old kitty that got really sick really fast. I brought him here and Dr. Jacobs was wonderful! He treated him very conservatively at first not trying to just run up costs. My kitty was not getting better so we got referred to a veterinary neurologist by Dr. Jacobs. Who was also just wonderful. I ended up having to put my baby down. I never told coastal about this as the other vet is the one who had to do it. But about a week after I got a card in the mail from Dr. Jacobs hand written telling me how sorry he was for my loss. It went front and back of this card. I could 100% tell he put time, effort and heart into it. That in itself is the nicest thing a vet has ever done for me. I then got a puppy who is now my service dog a few months later and we have seen Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Avery. And we love both of them! The whole staff there is so very caring and treats every animal that walks in the door as their own. Is this clinic expensive? Yes. Wish I could give more than 5 stars honestly! We just moved to town, saw this Clinic on Yelp and decided to try it. My had surgery a month ago at a different clinic, his incision became infected and they got us in right away! After the Dr and tech spent 30 minutes just trying to get to know and calm my skittish dog I knew this place was different! As for the prices, well you get what you pay for. And it ended up costing much less than I thought it would! Dr Jacobs is wonderful, we will NEVER go to another Vet! Friendly people but they charge way above what it should be. Went in today for 2 yearly boosters. The predicted receipt was for 265$ for only 2 shots. They charge 63$ for a physical exam just in order to receive the shots even though my dog had just had a check up in the past few months. Which they said it was because I was a walk in and that it was only 50$ if I waited until an open appt which was only 2 hours later. So essentially 13$ for no reason. Then they tried suggesting and saying that I do tests and blood work that I just had done at the end of February. Originally she said that my dog didn't have them done but when I had her double check they were actually done less than 3 months ago. This review is for the Pet Resort (we have a family vet already) We LOVE Coastal Pet Resort!!! They are beyond AMAZING! They take excellent care of our dog, they treat him like their own. He is a stingy eater when he is away from home but at coastal he eats all of his food, he plays with his bones and he gets tons of attention and affection! He loves it there! I am very protective of my dog and I worry about him constantly, but not when he is at Coastal. I know they take care of him and having the vet right there is great! He has yet to need their vet services (thankfully!) but there was a scare once. He had an issue with his eye and they called immediately and explained what was going on and they talked me through my options. They are very respectful, very friendly and they answer all of my questions! We love the little report cards they give at the end of every visit too! Read Less

The staff are very friendly and this is a cute little place, however, I boarded my dogs here and they came back smelling like a mixture of pee and like they had rolled around in a hamster cage. As soon we got outside they both hurried and went to the bathroom like they haven't in a long time. Appearance is nice, but I will most likely be taking my dogs to a better place next time. Dr Avery went above and beyond my expectations to figure out what's been going on with my kitty Ella. She is kind, compassionate and really took her time to do a thorough evaluation. Ella even managed to land a swat on her and Dr Avery didn't flinch. The vet assistant was also amazing. I was honest upfront that I had a set amount to spending on testing and they only did the necessary testing to allow me to stick to that number. Really pleased with my whole experience at coastal. I'm a very big fan of the wonderful people over at Coastal. My elderly yet still spritely pup Rummy is seen by Dr. Bissell, and Dr. Bissell is a great person and a great vet who truly cares about animals. I'm an anxious pet mom who used to want to be a vet (which I'm sure is sort of a pain!) but Dr. Bissell not only doesn't seem to mind this, he always takes the time to show me exactly what's up with my little guy. For example, Rummy has a murmur and also has some snortling issues sometimes. I always worry about things like tracheal collapse, so Dr. Bissell shows me the x-rays and explains what it would look like if Rummy did have a tracheal problem. He's a very good doctor and a very kind doctor who understands that your pet is only one half of the patient equation where veterinary medicine is concerned, and he always sets my mind at ease. In short, he's the best, and when Rummy had a life-threatening condition that Coastal could not handle, he immediately referred us to the best specialists around. If it were not for Dr. Bissell, my little man would not be here with me today. I will always be grateful to Dr. Bissell for helping us, and for helping the dog that I love so much, when we needed it the most. He saved my dog's life. I am always indebted to him for this. For the people complaining about pricing? I have a few things to say to you. First of all, if you're not able to pay for medical treatments your pet might need, perhaps you shouldn't have a pet. Veterinary medicine has grown by leaps and bounds since the old days and yes, treatments can be expensive. It's on you to be prepared for this eventuality. Second, there is such a thing as medical insurance for your pet. You should look into it. Third, I have never, ever been overcharged, bait and switched, or otherwise deceived in any way about the kind of care my pet needs or the treatment necessary by Dr. Bissell or anyone else at Coastal.Five stars for great vets and great staff who truly care about your pet's health and happiness. Wow. All the other reviews are good. And when that happens, a bad review is usually discounted. Dont make that mistake today.I've had many pets over the years and I'll be darned if I go back to this place. After the obligatory welcoming smile, everything hit the toilet. I think the term "competitive pricing" must be Greek or Latin to these people. Forget that New Orleans long weekend at Mardi Gras after visiting these clowns for a routine appointment.Upselling is ok at a department store, but not with a vet. While the facility is nice and so are the workers, I can't rate them very high. It was a stressful experience for my two dogs. A regular routine visit shouldn't take two hours. I think in an emergency it would be a good place to go. It just was too much for a regular vet visit. My animals are my children. To say I am particular about their care providers is an understatement. I recently adopted a fur baby dog from the Humane Society. I looked all over, and asked everyone, for vet reccomendations. I decided to trust the reviews on Yelp, and I am glad I did. From the beginning everyone at Costal is super friendly, nice, knowledgable and caring. They didn't laugh at my silly questions, or become impatient because I was asking them. My wife and I have two small dogs: a papillon and a long haired chihuahua mix of some sort (rescue). Prior to getting the second, we were always able to get caretakers, but adding the second added to the complexity of that (as she's still a puppy, she's still a little accident prone, plus she pretty much wants to just run and jump around like a crack addict, which is fun about 80% of the time, but can be overwhelming for the uninitiated). We travel a bunch and, therefore, needed to bite the bullet and board. We searched around a good bit, asked friends for recommendations, read online reviews. The whole bit. We wanted to get it right. We decided on Coastal. We first boarded the pups for about a week while we were out of the country. In the end, everything turned out great. We got them baths on the last day. They came home clean, happy, and clearly not traumatized (important!). :)We've since boarded them several times. The rates are reasonable if not slightly below average compared to other places. The staff are friendly and clearly animal lovers. The facility is clean and bright. There's outdoor space for the animals. All is great. If you're like my wife and I were, super uncertain about boarding and where to go, you'll almost certainly have a positive experience. One thing to note: they are absolutely sticklers about vaccinations (6-month intervals, I believe), including some non-standard ones. They can vaccinate on-site, so if your animal doesn't meet spec, they can fix it for a pretty reasonable vet fee. I'm personally okay with that...I like knowing every other dog my dogs will encounter are good to go. I'd rather they be a bit vigilant on that versus the alternative. Just know that going in. Our 3 pups are our babies, so we always want to be sure they are in good hands! We have used Coastal both for the vet and the boarding and have been thrilled with both! The vet we meet with is very personable and kind, listens to any concerns you have, and I was particularly impressed that though he made suggestions, he didn't try to sell us products we don't need (had bad experiences with this at other places). You get the feeling that they genuinely want what's best for your animal, not like they just want to sell you a bunch of stuff. For boarding, we left our German Shepherd mix with them for 3 days, and while he was there got him updated on shots and check up. As soon as they were done with the check up and shots they called my cell to let me know everything looked good and he was doing fine with the shots. I thought that was really nice, I do tend to worry a little leaving our pups, so it was nice that they took the initiative to give us an update on him! Wonderful experience! Read Less

When we relocated to Jacksonville, Florida finding a great vet was top on our list. My German Rotty, Coco is my heart and for her to have the best in health care & boarding is crucial to us. I came across Coastal Veterinary Hospital in a Google search. They had some great reviews so I decided to give them a try , I am so happy that I did. Dr. Bissell & Dr. Jacobs are phenomenal. From annual exams, never feeling rushed, all questions answered to OOPS my dog just swallowed a steak bone (lesson learned), they have gone above and beyond! It must be said that their Resort Staff & Receptionist (Christine, Catherine, Amber) are just as wonderful. Recently, a death in the family turned into many days out of town, and many last minute flights. Sure enough, Coastal always found room for Coco. They truly care. This vet saved my dog's life! My dog was very ill, and the vet made sure that he did all the right tests. Based on x-rays and an ultrasound, he and the ultrasound tech determined that my dog likely had an intestinal obstruction. They suggested that we go ahead and do exploratory surgery, and we did, thankfully, because he did have a partial obstruction. It was removed successfully and my dog was back to normal within hours! Although we just chose this vet because it was close to where we lived, I'm so glad we did. The rest of the staff has been great as well, and they have a nice facility. Thanks so much! The only reason I did not give them a 5 is because they are pretty expensive...at least compared to our vet in our previous city in Georgia. This is based on the price of regular check-ups, etc. They did, however, try to help us out when my dog had his surgery - two vets did the surgery, but only one of them stayed the whole time, which saved us some money. it took 2 and 1/2 hours to complete an annual physical/shots and possible intestional infection exam and there were no emergency care situations that occurred during that time that interrupted my cat's needs.( * plus my appt. was 20 mins. behind when they called me in) vet tech allowed my cat to get her foot hurt by getting it caught in a grate (while in the back of the house) then tried to cover it up and out in out lied to me about it but after a series of questions on my part another tech informed me of the accident! (while i heard my cat howling he did not scratch or bite the incompetent tech responsible for the incident) missinformation was given to dr.,by the tech and thus ,confusion occured about was treatment options and tests were needed. dr. seemed rushed and not focused on my cat's health. i had more face to face time with the "crappy"tech than i had with the vet herself! (FYI: dr. also did not even know of any animal charity organizations in the area although she has been here 5 years!) after an estimate cost of $175.00 during check out the final cost was $280.00!!! the only bright thing about this vet practice was the front office staff...they were the only ones who apologized for the lenght of time it took and for the painful paw accident!!!! do not...i repeat do not take your pet to this hospital!!!!! beware!
