I travel about 125 miles one way, from central FL, up to EBH in Jacksonville for my Amazon parrot's health exams and treatment.  They saved Sherman's life when she was 18 yo suffering from a staff infection, that was misdiagnosed by a LOCAL small animal vet who "claimed to be" Avian Certified.  I almost lost her then, but found Dr. Rhoda Stevenson and her staff to be critical in Sherman's recovery and how healthy she is today.  Yes, a Board Certified Avian Vet is pricey, but my Amazon is now 32 yo and as important, medically, as any member of the family.  She and I still see Dr. Stevenson on an annual basis for blood work and wellness exam. We did have an emergency last summer and the office staff got us right in to see the Dr. that morning.  The meds Sherman needs for arthritis, thyroid issues etc. are mailed to me, when I need refills.  They are very accommodating, in that regard.  I have boarded Sherman there, too, and never worried once about her care.  While waiting to be seen by the Dr., it is possible to personally observe the other boarded and resident birds. They always seem to have clean cages and fresh food.  Exotics are tricky and you need EBH if you are going to give them the life they deserve. Read Less

Love this place since they were located in their old location many years ago. Many years ago when Xamba had her mate they both visited Exotic Bird Hospital. They both had great care then and the care continues even now.We dropped Xamba off for boarding while we were going to be out of town during our recent trip to Texas.During Xamba"s boarding she had her physical, her spa treatment (aka:wings,beak and nail trim) and daily loving from the staff. Upon pick up I think she actually was not all that impressed that we were home. She did barf 3 times and since that is a sign of being excited I guess I should happy about the barfy greeting.The hospital also provides tons of bird friendly toys and lots of nutritious bird and exotic pet food. If you have an unusual pet, they can provide you the information you need to keep your exotic healthy and happy.Xamba did not come back talking, but she did not go there talking either. I recently bought a baby budgie and decided to get him all checked out. This was the only avian vet I found, and so when it was time to get his nails trimmed I decided to bring my baby budgie in for a physical examination as well. Everything went great!  They weighed my budgie at 32 grams which they said was healthy and gave me plenty of advice for raising him. This advice ranged from diet changes to cage improvements. The staff here was beyond friendly, supportive, and informative. Upon leaving my bird appointment the staff gave me an informative packet for raising my baby budgie. Whether you are a first time bird owner like me, or an experienced bird owner I believe that this avian hospital is the right place to bring your birds for anything medical/bird related. Read Less

Worst vet ever!!!  On two separate occasions I have had an injured wild animal (1 was a bird) and both times they would NOT help, even though they are .2 miles from me. Why become a vet if you do not care about animals!?They will NEVER get any of my business and I will let everyone know how little regard they have for wildlife. Read Less

I have taken my Pet Iguana Godzilla there since day one when I bought him. They have been nothing but sweet and kinda to my baby lizard for the past 15 years of his life. Unfortunately 07/14/2018 I had to put him to rest due to old age and I was just mortified. Godzilla has seen Dr. Stevenson and Dr. Shashy since he was little. That day Dr. Stevenson looked at me and told me that I have been the best lizard mom that they have ever seen and that Godzilla was the most happiest and healthiest Iguana that have had in the office ever. The both came in and hugs me tell me that they were sorry for my lost. I am now taking my nee edition Groot my bearded Dragon to see Dr. Hughes and she is a blessing to have as well. My poor baby Groot unfortunately was diagnose with  MDB (Metabolic Bone Disease) They told me right away what I needed to do to get him in to shape and to help keep the disease from killing him. I was told that it will take a long time for the disease to "go away" but I was told that it is treatable and that he will live a long happy healthy life if I just follow the steps that they gave me. I would recoomed these people for anything living creature. They may be a little on the pricy side, but hey, you don't by a $500 bird or a $10 Iguana to only spend $20 a the vet. They do EVERYTHING!. Not recommended if you are going here for anything related to chickens. They simply didn't have the experience or knowledge of what to do for chicken illnesses. Gave the wrong diagnosis and our hen ended up dying from something we now know can be easily addressed. Read Less

I drive just over 500 miles round trip to take my parrots to Exotic Bird Hospital and have for almost 20 years now.  The entire staff, from Dr Stevenson on down, is incredibly professional, helpful, knowledgeable, and caring.  Like most of us, I worry nonstop about my birds, but this is the one place where when I have to leave one overnight, I know they don't just close the doors at 6 and come back the next morning hoping everyone is all right!  Simply a top notch facility in every way, my only "complaint" is I wish I lived closer Read Less

I just moved to southeast Georgia and there are no ferret vets here.  However, Dr. Shashy and staff are worth the hour and a half trip to Florida.  They are knowledgeable, kind and considerate and I felt like my ferret was getting the best care possible.  This is definitely my new veterinarian. This is the worst vet I have ever come across. I took my  Eclectus parrot there for a beak trim and a health exam. He wasn't sick at all, but they recommende to do a throughout exam with all kinds of tests. When they tried to draw blood from my boy, I couldn't watch it any longer how they tortured my baby. They were unable to get blood from him and had to cut several toenails, he screamed the entire time and I had to leave the room, crying for my boy. It was so bad and took almost 20 minutes until they finally got enough blood from him. I thought I was in a butchery, not in a bird clinic. When the test results came back after a week, someone called me and told me my boy had liver disease and that his AST was extremely high, that I need to give him Lactulose with milk thistle mixed in liquid form. (My boy is only 4 years old)!!! I live in Palm Coast and drove again to Jacksonville to pick his medicine up. I gave it to him like advised and the morning of the 4th day, I found my boy lifeless and almost dead in his cage. I was shocked to death and didn't know what happened to him. I researched the medication they had prescribed and found out, that it is a laxative also and can lead to severe dehydration. which obviously happened to my boy. He had a seizure in my hand, it was that bad and I though I am going to lose him. I called the hospital and said, it's an emergency, but the vet wasn't available until 4 hours later. Had I not given him electrolytes very quickly, my boy would have died that day. When the vet finally called me back over 4 hours later, I had saved my boys life and her reaction was as disinterested as can bel The only thing that was of her concern is to get me back a week later for a follow up blood test. Then I searched the web and found an avian website from a respected vet in Illinois who  published all the values of blood test and their normal range and guess what,? My boy wasn't  above the normal range with his liver values, and wouldn't have needed any medicine at all. This medicine nearly killed my boy and they did not tell me about the possible side effects and complications. They prescribed something that wasn't necessary in the first place. I will not go there ever again and not recommend this hospital and the vet to anyone. All they are interested is money, money and money. Read Less

I periodically take my African Grey in for a wing clipping and general health review.  They're very gentle.  I'm going to be boarding my bird next month so I got to check out the area.  The area was very clean and the birds seemed very content.  I have no reservations about leaving her there. I took my chinchilla here this past weekend because he was acting lethargic and not running in his wheel. The staff was friendly and treated my little boy with love. They diagnosed him with a hurt foot, and the medicine they gave him has perked him right up. I drive from Fleming Island to bring my bunnies here. I also board them here whenever we go out of town. Only once did I have an emergency on a Friday night, and they were so kind. I was even able to come visit my baby over the weekend, and they didn't mind me calling to check on her. Vet even called on Sunday to give me an update, and let me know bunny could come home the next day. They are extremely knowledgeable, and never judgmental. I'm active duty Navy and I was recently deployed to the Middle East. Even far in the other side of the world they updated me on my birds health and condition. They cared for her for 9 months and did a fantastic job. I once again left her in their care for a week and I was not let down.
