River City Veterinary Hospital

Jacksonville, Florida
General Info
River City Veterinary Hospital examines how pets interact with spatial elements and appointment structures to deliver veterinary care in Jacksonville—an approach appreciated by families throughout Florida. Initial visits typically start in a distraction-free zone where pets can take time to explore their surroundings or settle down. Staff members meticulously observe various signs including tail positioning along with pawing actions and sound reactivity. Veterinarians assess fur condition alongside pulse rate and hydration levels while examining jaw symmetry and gait consistency together with the pet's reaction to close proximity. The medical staff meticulously records every detail when dealing with animals unfamiliar to clinical settings or those with previous trauma and handling resistance. River City Veterinary Hospital delivers diagnostic services alongside surgery planning and wellness exams while offering mobility tracking and parasite prevention together with breed-informed wellness forecasting. Veterinary care plans adjust their pace based on pets' responses to physical contact and routine alterations as well as clinic environmental signals such as lighting conditions, room transitions, and sound levels. This technique proves particularly beneficial for pet-owning families whose members either feel uncomfortable in group environments or excel through repetitive practice. The design of follow-up procedures aligns with individual household schedules while synchronizing with pets' innate rhythms. Pet owners are provided with detailed explanations and step-by-step reasoning for each decision which transforms them from passive observers into active participants in their pet's care process. River City Veterinary Hospital offers Jacksonville pet owners and those in nearby Florida areas a care framework where attention rhythm and shared understanding create visits that unfold with greater naturalness and calmness.

I've been going to Herschel for about 13 years. Initially Dr. Plant was the only vet and we loved him. He has now retired and I was hesitant. I could list numerous stories about how he went above and beyond for us. The new ownership though has really done a lot of work and updated the practice which was much needed. My only complaint was that they never took appointments so you could wait hours to see someone. They now have a nice website, take credit/debit, and you can book appointments online. The prices did increase a bit but they are still significantly cheaper than any other vet in Jacksonville. So thankful for a place that really cared about our furry family members that doesn't break the bank. Read Less

This place will kill your dog and have absolutely no remorse about it whatsoever! My baby was a 3 year old maltipoo who was having random pain. I told them she wasn't really eating or jumping like normal they initially said nothing was wrong with her and gave her a steroid shot. When i was taking her to the car I noticed blood was everywhere so i took her back inside where they just laughed it off saying it could've jusf been a surface blood vessel. They then finally heard the painful yelp I was telling them she would randomly do. They told me they felt my 3 year old maltipoo had a bulging disc and would most likely need to go to a neurologist in Orange Park. That was a Thursday, I asked for other testing they told me to come back Tuesday if she wasn't better. They gave her steroids and I asked if there was anything I could give her for pain like baby aspirin they said ok. The next day she wasn't any better I called that Friday and they told me give the steroids time and to not let her jump always pick her up. Friday night I watched her eyes roll in the back of her head and she vomited. She was breathing so heavy and I could barely hear her heart. I rushed to the ER vet where they grabbed her from me before even getting her name or any info( that's how bad she looked). At that point they took bloodwork and told me her blood levels were at 11. She needed blood and plasma infusions. We figured out she had ingested rat poison and it was thinning her blood out, hence why when she got the shot from Herschel the blood went everywhere. Her bill ended up being almost $2000. They told at Affiliated ER vet that it was still unlikely she would make it but fortunately she did. I called Herschel and told them about their misdiagnosis. I was then told that medicine was not an exact science. I asked for my money back, which was only $69 but had I waited until Tuesday like they told me she would've been dead by then. They did NOT want to give me back my money, it was a major battle. Finally they gave me my money back. When I asked them why they didn't atleast do bloodwork on her they told me they didnt have the capability to get blood results back right away and even if they did they didn't want to charge me for blood work because they didn't think she needed it. It would have been nice had they given me that option, it would also be nice if they told people that the only thing they're good for is doing vaccines. THATS IT! Now if you want to take your dog there for shots okay cool but actual treatment? They're not capable and they won't tell you that until it's too late. They wont tell you until they're trying to justify their misdiagnosis. To add insult to injury a couple of weeks after their incompetence and almost killing my dog I received a letter from them. I ASSUMED it would be a formal apology. Instead it was rubbing salt in the wounds. I was trying to let it go after all I still had a sick dog to take care of but it was a long letter that was ultimately saying they would no longer allow me to bring my dogs there. Not that I was anyway but the way it was worded with no apology essentially blaming me for being upset, if it allows me to attach a copy of the letter I will but seriously if you think your dog is sick don't bring them here. It is a FACT they're not equipped to handle dogs being sick. I was also told there's a sign outside that says they can't handle everything but even if that is the case they should tell people that instead of wasting their time. I was blessed I had family that could help me pay for my baby's ER bill but for others it would've been a much different outcome. All because these people can't admit they're not skilled enough and don't have the necessary equipment to do diagnostic testing. If you have any other options please don't go here. It's better to let your dog die for free than to pay someone for them to die. Read Less

My best friend Sparky has been coming here since my family adopted him in 20. Is this place the nicest/cleanest? No. Does it have the greatest vets? Probably not. Will this place harm you dog on purpose? Heck no. I am thankful that my dog has never had any serious problems that required anything invasive. Herschel has been the best budget friendly place for me as all I need for my pup is his yearly vaccines, tests and etc. I have never left the clinic with a bitter taste in my mouth. They take appointments now and usually you aren't waiting for hours compared to if you were to walk in. At Herschel you get what you pay for. If you are on a budget and just need routine tests or vaccines why not take your puppers here? They provide adequate care for any puppers. I actually recently visited the clinic to get a small bump checked out on my dogs chest and saw a vet I had not seen before a younger women with brown hair. She was great. Very clear and calming not rude. Read Less

Very disappointed at this place, don't even know where to start, Mickey was my beautiful Scottish Terrier since she was 2 weeks old, we shared our life together for over 17 years, she turned 17 this past March 2018 I considered her my child. Mickey was a patience at Herschel Animal Clinic since she was a baby, they took good care of her for many years, they used to have great caring doctors until a year or so ago... Mickey started having some issues about 6 months ago, ups and downs like any other dog her age would, I knew the time was coming so I did everything in my power to help her live as comfortable as she could, back in late November 2017 I took her for a check up and picked up some monthly meds, the new "lady doctor" (middle age short dark haired) run all kinds of test to make sure everything was ok, we found some kidney issues, low red blood cells along with anemia but due to Mickey's age it was expected I assumed, we got some meds to help Mickey out. About a month ago I noticed Mickey started lacking concentration and wouldn't eat as regular, i though it was ok due to her age, 2 weeks ago Mickey completely stopped eating, she will only eat certain treats and drink lots of water to the point she will vomit from drinking too much water, I took Mickey to the Vet on Monday and explain them everything, the doctor said they could admit Mickey for the night so they can keep an eye on her but they couldn't promise she was going to get better, they run a bunch of exams and said Mickey's anemias levels were sky high the machine wouldn't even read them along with her kidneys being bad, I decided to take her home with me, they loaded us with meds and IV's, I did everything they told me but Mickey would not respond in any way positively to the meds, she got worst she stopped drinking water and hadn't eat in 10 days... I knew the time was coming, I called Thursday afternoon to see if I could speak to the doctor but she was gone. That Thursday night Mickey and I had the worst night ever, she couldn't open her mouth to drink water, was weak to the point she stopped walking, she was dehydrated, at times she tried to vomit but there was nothing in her stomach, at this point she had become anorexic, so pretty much she was dying, I stayed with her in a couch I comfort her all night long waiting for the clinic to open at 8am so I could take her there to help her leave in peace and stop this madness, I called the doctor at 8am to see if she could put her to sleep, I explained everything that Mickey suffered those days and her answer was there's a hospital that can help you bring her back to life, but she said it was gonna cost me a few thousands, I told her I didn't think Mickey will recover neither I wanted her to be ok for 2 weeks then she had to go back thru all of this again, she reply we are booked and the only time I can see Mickey is at 5pm... ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Did you expect for me sit my ass watch my dog suffer and died while we wait on you? Uggh, anyways I hang up but then called back, I spoke to the receptionist which was very kind, I explained her everything and she told me I was more than welcome to bring Mickey as a "Walk in" and due to her status we would be seen first, we did, arrived and ask to put my dog to sleep, it took 10 minutes to stop my Mickey from suffering, I am furious and angry at this lady doctor, when we walked in she was sitting in a little room using her cellphone. She didn't say anything to us when she was injecting Mickey, I learned my lesson, i would never take my dogs to this lady, she's careless and clueless! She doesn't need to be around Pets. Read Less

I hate to say this about this place, because I took my pets here for many years. It has DRASTICALLY DECLINED.I'm not going to post my whole dogs story, but I had payed for multiple check up to fix this problem she had, each time they told me it was something OTHER than what I knew it was, (an infection). I finally took her to another vet, that promptly started her on antibiotics and got rid of her infection quick. I don't know what this vets problem was, but she refused to put my dog on antibiotics, she had an infection for months and it wasn't till i broke down crying at a different vet that something finally happened. Now, the girl at the front desk, SLOW, unhelpful. Everytime I go there its like she has to spend 10 minutes reading my file before I can get my flea medicine. I just don't know why she has to be so slow...long lines always. The man they have in there is nice though. He seems to know what hes doing. Read Less

Riverside animal hospital is closed on Wednesdays and is her regular vet they have her records there. I can't believe they allowed me to walk out the door with a hurt animal and would not treat her. Will never use this veterinarian again. Read Less

Eh they're okay for things like vaccinations and simple things like getting heartworm or flea preventative medications but they're not okay for when your dog is really sick. I've taken my dogs here to get vaccinations and never had any issues but when my dog was really sick she got misdiagnosed. If you come here just be aware they're more for preventative care. I paid $69 for my dog to be misdiagnosed. $69 isn't much but the next day I ended up having to take her to the ER vet where I had an almost $2000 bill to pay. My dog was almost dead and required blood transfusions and plasma. I was shocked when I went to Herschel and the attitude from the officer manager and Dr. Sherman. They were so nonchalant about it. I just wanted my $69 back and they told me I had no reason to be upset over what happened bc medicine isn't an exact science. I understand mistakes happen but the nonchalant attitude was ridiculous considered my dog literally almost died. I kept telling them "$69 is a drop in the bucket considering what my baby had to go through the expense I had at the other vet." They didn't care. Finally after an argument they finally said they would ask about the refund but they doubted it because AGAIN medicine isn't an exact science and mistakes happen. Fortunately Dr. Banks was actually understanding and didn't minimize my frustration and hurt. She seemed genuinely concerned which I'm appreciative of. I'm not saying don't go here, I'm just saying be informed that a lot of things they can't do in house because the facility is kind of outdated, which I really wasn't aware of. So if you're really concerned take them somewhere else. For shots though go for it. I just don't want anyone else to go through what I did.Read Less

The place was awful, they wasted my time, wasted my money, and poked my dog with needles for nothing. They made me pay $85 just to be seen by the vet. Once seen, the vet's response to what's going on with my dog was I don't know. Then prescribed her unnecessary medication to her so they could bill me for it, didn't even tell me the results of her test I had to ask for them before leaving. The experience summed up to information I already knew, information a ten year old with a smart phone could tell you, an hour of my time gone, and $105 removed from my wallet. Read Less

If i could give zero stars i would. My mom used to bring all our dogs here when I was a kid, and my mother used to bring all her dogs here when she was growing up, and Dr. Plant, and Dr. Frost were amazing, and they saved more than one of our dachshunds on more than one occasion, while it was always busy and with a wait, Dr plant and frost were always top notch with our animals, now being grown myself, I took my dog to herschel, not realizing Dr plant and frost had past away/sold herschel to these new owners/vets. My first time at herschel with my own dog, was for a routine set of shots, and an ear issue. Dr banks, couldnt even get my dogs name right, administered the shots, but diagnosed my dog with ear mites, well for 3 years of repeat visits for this ear mite problem that never went away, aswell as a botched cyst removal that ended up returned after paying out $1000s was enough for my wife and I to find a new vet, upon our first visit to the new vet the vet said that my dog doesn't have ear mites that it was a yeast infection, one round of meds and it was cleared up, something that hershel had been Mis-diagnosing, aswell as repeatedly wasted days at their clinic, aswell wasted money on pointless wrong meds. I would never go back to herschel, we drive over an hour to our new vet, and it's still less time spent, with the hour trip there, the vet check up, and the hour back, than waking up early then standing in line all day at hershel. Back when Dr plant was alive it was worth the wait, now not soo much. And when Dr banks replies to the poor ratings about going back and looking over your animals chart notes, it's a joke, we got our dogs records and the lack of notes was a joke, when our dog had the cyst removed, the notes didn't say anything except, the size needles the used to suture her back up, no pathology report, nothing, even though we wanted one, just all around poor service and lack of being thorough in treatment and surgical notes. Save yourself the time, frustration, and find another vet, even if it cost just a tad more, you and your animal will thank you. As my wife and I kick ourselves for putting up with the rude and poor service at herschel for the 3 years we did.Read Less

The worse experiance I have ever had. Rude staff, I have been going to this clinic for years. Took my dog in for teeth cleaning. The tech came in with two black muzzles! My dog has never bitten anyone and had just been there to have a mass removed. When I objected, the tech was extremly rude, brought in a release for me to sign. I signed and initialed in every space. She replied I had messed it up and now she had to get another release. I left and they followed up with a letter saying my pet was no longer welcomed. I didn't cuss, just expressed dismay at seeing two black leather muzzles. The letter was signed by " the management " When you leave a clinic, it is obvious you will not being returned. The vet looked in but never intervened.  I wondered why the clinic was empty when I stopped to buy flea medicine and to buy ID pet food, which turned out to be full of corn and the wrong food.  Don't go to this place. Rude to customers, even one who had been going since Dr. PLant was alive.  I would give it a zero if I could. Apparently, they are clueless on pet care and customer service and the vets are not in charge. The actual signature was illegible. Read Less

I took my dog to this vet about 7 years ago a boxer he was unusually sick so I went to Herschel... I paid about $200 and given meds only to be told nothing is wrong with my puppy. Three days later he was dead!!! I didn't at that time blame the vet but I felt more could've been done. Then last Friday I gave them another shot with my pit bull. I paid $164, given medications and told nothing is wrong with my dog, called them yesterday evening and being on hold for a while it was suggested I take my dog to an animal hospital. I called around got information on places to take him, prepared myself to take my dog to the vet today and he was dead. I be damned five days later he was dead after they stated nothing was wrong. I livid and hurt and afraid to tell my kids their dog is gone. 2nd dog the Herschel said was ok, nothing wrong!! I will NEVER take another pet of mine to this irresponsible place!!! Can anyone recommend any good affordable vets around town?  I had the most horrible experience at Herschel Animal Clinic today.  You can tell that Dr Plant is no longer in charge.  1st off I was in the waiting room for OVER 3 hours.  Even back in the day when Herschel was suppose massive cheap and had lines out the door I never waited that long.  Back in the day the most was maybe an hour.  Even when I had to take Chance to No More Homeless Pets for X rays it was not a 3 hour wait.  As a few people went ahead of me and this other guy  that was waiting there too, the guy went to the counter and asked when would he be up and why did the one dog go ahead of us.  The receptionist said that that dog was getting put down.  That kind of struck me as odd because that dog did not look sick.  The dog was young and it didn't appear to have any health issues.  It was a little Shit Zu and it didn't have an issue with walking and his fur look fine or breathing.  I know an animal can appear to be healthy and still have something wrong, but whatever wrong this dog may of had it didn't look bad enough that it had to be put down.  I also noticed the sign that they normally had in their lobby was gone that stating "We do not put euthanize healthy animals." That sign was GONE and no longer hanging in the lobby.  That just bothered me.  Then after 3 hours of waiting I finally get to the examine room, and I tell the handler that my dog will need a muzzle.  Dr Plant always had to have a muzzle on my dog but could still do the shots and everything.  Even express the dogs anal glands.  Well this vet, was a new female vet that was just a bitch.   She goes now you know if I can't handle him, and she goes into this long story about how the dog will need sedatives etc and  just really talking down to me.  We started to proceed but Chance was getting a little antsy, I asked do you have any female handlers that could help verses the male handler?  She just took a long pause and said we are so busy we can't really be bothered with this.  I was like you know I think it might be time to start looking for another vet.  She was like I think you do because we don't want to deal with your nasty dog and your low life self and you just need to go some where else.  My mouth just dropped.  I just responded "Hey just because you can't handle my dog, and everyone else can and your just a crappy vet"  I yelled on the way out.  I was noticing too in the lobby.  It seemed that Chance was the only pitty mix in the lobby.  Every dog in that lobby was either a Chihuahua or Yorkie or some kind of little dog.  This vet obviously is jaded against pits and any vet that stupid and ignorant plus any vet that puts down a healthy dog is a piece of crap vet.  After 20 years of going to this vet, I would highly recommend to stay away Read Less

I avoid the popular times and am in and out in one hour. Herschel is good for yearly but wouldn't recommend for actual veterinary care. My real vet's yearly fees are $175 per dog. Herschel is $75. Both prices include rabies tag. It's a clinic, walk ins only so it's first come first served. If you're expecting a pleasant waiting room experience with no wait time, this is not the place. If your pet is healthy and all you need is vaccinations, you lack deep pockets but are a conscientious pet owner and are prepared to wait, Herschel is it. Avoid Saturday morning if you can help it. That is a guaranteed nightmare because of the wait but my experiences with the vets and staff have been fine. I'm paying one third of the usual fee so I expect a two thirds reduction in "bedside manner". This animal clinic is a no frills kind of place.  They don't make appointments but are extremely busy as they are quite affordable.  Because of their affordability, you can expect long lines for this place.  The Vets do a great job in treating as many pets as possible, but that causes them to be short in conversation with each owner, which I'm sure some find the lack of attention as a negative instead of the positive that it truly is.  You save money and your pets get the care that they need.  We have only used them for routine services such as vaccinations and ear infections, so I am not sure how they are with more complex problems.  Even still, I would not be hesitant in using them if needed. Those that work in this clinic have the poorest customer service skills I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Yes, there's a wait, & yes, the fees are lower... However, you get what you pay for! My vet, who I love, wanted a lot more money than I could afford to get my dachshund spayed & her rear dew claws removed. My mother-in-law recommended this clinic, so I scheduled an appointment. After the surgery was completed, I witnessed my dachshund using her long body to reach around her "e-collar" & pull at the stitches on her rear legs. The stubborn girl removed one from her left leg & was working on removing the stitch on her right leg before I could stop her. We live in Arlington, but I immediately rushed over to the clinic to have her checked out. The stitch she removed from her left leg was replaced with a staple. Thinking that the collar provided by the clinic was not adequate, I purchased another collar from a pet store. This longer collar, however, had still not deterred my puppy. She not only got around this new, longer collar... She had also ripped out the staple! I rushed her back to the clinic again. However, I took the collar off & left it at home because I couldn't drive & hold her while wearing it as the collar was just too long & intrusive. Upon arrival, I explained the situation to, what I'm assuming was the vet & a technician. I'm not sure because they didn't even bother to introduce themselves to me. The visit entailed having two staples placed on her left leg. When the two women took my puppy out of the room to administer the procedure, I heard one of them say, "I can guarantee you she's not keeping the collar on this dog!" I was enraged that they not only spoke so inappropriately about a customer, but that they had the audacity to do so knowing that I could hear them. Upon returning with my puppy, the technician did not enter the room... Only the vet. She began to berate me as to why I had not brought the collar with me & that she needed to see the collar. She more than intimated what she & her colleague had accused me of on the other side of the door. I told her that my puppy is spoiled... I will not dispute that. I would not, however, do anything that would impede her progress to becoming well. I also advised that I'd heard the comments that were made & I did not appreciate what was said... I concluded that if they were going to display such a lack of professionalism, they could at least have the decency to lower their voice. After her constant attempts to interrupt me were over, she had the audacity to say to me that she did not make the comment, so I owed her an apology!!! Seriously?!? I laughed because I could not believe what was coming out of this woman's mouth!!! Just when I thought she'd already hit an all-time low on the ethics ladder, she dug down & managed to, proudly, strike even further. Needless to say... I rescued two new feral kittens and wanted to get them their shots as well as fixed. I called Herschel Animal Clinic and was told by the person on the phone that the "kitten package" includes a first round of shots, and that it also included their rabies shot. She also said I could leave them to get fixed when I came in and quoted me a price for that. It turns out neither of the prices she quoted were accurate, and the information about neutering wasn't accurate either. When I got to the clinic for a walk-in I waited for THREE hours. It was also two degrees in the waiting room. When they took me back I waited another 30 minutes for the vet to enter. As it turns out the kitten package only includes a first round of shots, NOT including the rabies shot, which was an additional charge. When you are on a budget, adding another 30 dollars to the bill can be annoying. Also, the price for neutering was about triple what the woman on the phone had said. Also, I couldn't leave them there to get it done that day but would have to make an appointment, even though the woman on the phone had said that I could leave them during a walk-in.I could tell that the vet was extremely annoyed when she entered the room and got even more annoyed when I asked questions about the prices and the neutering. She would not even look at me much less make eye contact with me. Instead her assistant literally handed me a card for No More Homeless Pets simultaneously as I was asking the price for neutering. They treated me like I couldn't afford to come back, even though I hadn't implied that, which offended me. I was actually just trying to get the right information because the person that answers the phone does not know the services you provide. Most people care about the prices of services and shouldn't be given an attitude for asking questions. Having a person answering the phone who knows prices could prevent this. I left this place feeling rotten. I went to No More Homeless Pets and was treated respectfully and without the attitude. I got my kittens fixed for a reasonable price and with no hassle. So thanks Herschel for directing me elsewhere. Read Less

Just got done with my first visit. I have a kitten/cat that needed flea medicine, dewormer and shots. I think the most important thing to say is this is not the vet office for someone who wants individualized attention and a bunch of warm/fuzzy. They are nice people, but the purpose of the clinic is to quickly move pets through and do it at a low cost to their owners. For me, this is great. I don't have a bunch of disposable income to pay for a Dior style doctor. I went on a Tuesday around 9am. I'm sure others have experienced long lines but I don't think the entire process took me more than 45 minutes. I didn't have to wait long at all to get in. I was called and I took my kitten in. They didn't take her out of my cardboard carrier to give her her shot or weigh her. I don't think I was in the room for more than 2 minutes. They just gave me the medicine recommended a flea preventative. I bough one application of the flea med to test it out (which is nice you don't have to buy 6 months). My bill total for a shot, and two medicines was about 60. Considering even the Humane Society's prices were at least 20-30 dollars more than that I am happy. Read Less

After going here with family to bring their puppy to the vet, I have to say that I am not a fan. I didn't experience this place as other reviewers did when Dr. Plant was the veterinarian, so I do not have the comparison. I do have comparisons to other veterinarians and animal clinics that I have visited and Herschel Animal Clinic is probably one of the worst that I have experienced. While their prices are much cheaper than other veterinarians and clinics in the area, the service is beyond less than stellar. As a walk in clinic, you want to get here at least an hour prior to the front doors opening in the morning. Any later than that and you are waiting for hours to get in to see the doc. All that was needed on the day that we went was to get a check up on a newly rescued puppy. She had a wormy belly and they were supposed to check her progress, her weight, and give her another shot or two. The wait was about two and a half to three hours. When we finally got in, the doc didn't really even look at the dog. She checked vitals and then just issued a refill of meds.  I find there to be a serious lack of love for animals at this clinic. I see it more as a business trying to make their money. As an animal lover, that's not how an animal clinic should feel. Read Less

Took my dog to Herschel Animal Clinic because her normal vet is closed on Wednesdays. Went in for a basic examine/treatment for dog pink eye and was informed they wouldn't even look at her if I didn't have her rabies shots records with me. I even asked what they would do if she was just hit by a car and was in life/death circumstances and they stated 'there was nothing they could do' without the records. 1. The place I'd get the records from was closed - thus the reason I was there. 2. She's a 10 month old puppy and she has her city rabies tag on her collar - she wouldn't have the tag if she didn't have her shots and, at her age, it would be impossible for her to be due for another shot. 3. Another vet saw her just fine later today (WITHOUT the rabies records) and gave her terrific treatment. It's obvious that animal care is not their number one concern. I should have read these reviews before even wasting my time this morning. Thank god it wasn't a time sensitive emergency. These people are horrible - never again. Read Less

DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMALS HERE! I rescued a little kitten on Christmas from a vending machine and in last attempts to save him decided to stop at this clinic before going to Animal Care and Protective Services. Clerk at desk told me the visit would be $47 with shots given. I asked how long the wait was and he said a matter of 10-15 mins max. We got in quickly. I had also informed the clerk that I couldn't afford much since I was unemployed. That being said the vet, Dr. Plant with (I assume a tech) came into the room, didn't say one word to me. Pulled the kitten out and started jabbing him without saying anything to me. Then drew small amount of blood for testing, without informing testing was going to be done and that would be charged to me as well. Left me in the room without saying anything but that they needed to check something. Left me waiting again without saying anything for another 10 minutes and then returned saying he was negative for the testing they performed. Then, proceeded to pull the kitten out again and weigh him and grab out some meds of some sort and said under their breath to me .035 ml while handing the meds to me. I then being a concerned animal lover asked about what was tested and how many eye drops needed to be given and how many times a day. It was obvious they could careless about this kitten which is highly upsetting to me. Left the room and went to the pay counter to be told the total was $45. Handed over my credit card for processing which clerk proceeded to tell me that no shots were given and then about a minute later when another customer was asking a question to me, the clerk proceeded to tell me the total was actually $60. What was I supposed to do then? They are just about getting their money. Could careless about the animals and owners or concerned animal lovers who just want to do good. I will be sure to report this also to whoever else will listen. Please take my advice and don't take your animals here. I will NOT be returning ever again! Read Less

This 2nd time I have brought a cat to the clinic and I hope they haven't killed him like they did my first pet. After a 2 hour wait stressing out my pet, I was finally able to just sign in and after anther hour of wait I was able to see the vet. My cat had an abscess and while the vet shaved and cleaned the wound, the service stopped there. I was given antibiotic pills, which stresses out the animal if your able to get them to swallow it and he was given a rabies shot, which is not recommended for sick animals. I was told to apply a salve directly on my cat's eye, which is another stressful feat for both me and my cat. If they actually cared about the animal's health, they would of gave him an antibiotic injection and at least applied some salve so I could see the best possible procedure for administering it. My animal is now sicker and more stressed out than before we visited these butchers. I previously had a cat with a urinary tract infection and she died 2 days after being treated there or should I say mistreated. No antibiotic shot was given, just pills thrown at me and told to take care of it. I thought maybe my first pet was too ill to be saved, but after doing research, I have come to believe it is their total disregard for my pet's health that led to her death and may cause the death of my other pet. OK, let's begin with a caveat.  The old Herschel Animal Clinic was something special.  It was run by Doctor Plant who deeply cared about providing quality care at the lowest cost possible.  For many low income people, Herschel Animal Clinic was a sanctuary to which they could turn when their beloved pets fell ill.Alas, the only constant is change.I regret to inform that Doctor Plant suffered a massive heart attack, required a quadruple bypass and has retired.  He has sold his clinic.Well, the new owners are determined to run it as a business.  Nothing wrong with that as long as the customer gets what s/he pays for.  However, that is not the case.  There are fees for everything now.  The friendly, warm atmosphere is gone.  The drugs are more expensive.  And to top it all off, my Mom's dog did not get better (could be an act of God, but for $100, I would have expected something that made him at least feel better). One thing is for certain, the special place that Doctor Plant created is gone. I will only take my pets to Herschel Animal Clinic from here on out. Herschel Animal Clinic is a walk-in clinic that doesn't charge for the visit, but only for the medication [at very discounted prices] and for the procedures performed. Once I discovered the amazingness of this place, all other options flew out the window. The only real draw back is the LONG wait, but if you are clever and go at non-peak times [like go right before their lunch break around 12 and get your name on the list for post-lunch, around 2pm, and then return around 1:45 with your pet to be first in line] then the lines are manageable. The people who work here truly love animals and take care of each animal with a lot of individual attention and care. They are also friendly to the throngs of customers waiting to be seen. There is something about waiting for a good hour amidst all kinds of pets and pet owners that bonds people together. Everyone coos over each other's animals, give knowing looks when the animal is sick, a baby, or freaking out, and share stories about why they are in there and why they love their pets. If you love animals as much as I do, the waiting is even a little enjoyable for that fact alone.I am floored by their prices. I got both my cats fixed for around $50 all told. I buy their flea medication in bulk form that comes with a tube and a dropper [you pour the meds into the tube to store the leftovers] and they tell you how much to use on the animals by weight. One year long supply costs only $40, which is about a two month supply for the same medication sold in other animal clinics!I trust these people and the prices are phenomenal. You and your pets will be thrilled. Read Less

Read Less

They take their time and address all your concerns when you are there, and the dogs just love them (except my cat, but he is a jerk anyway) Just ask who is the vet before you go in. My only bad visit in many years was with a another professional (Dr. Ramsey) but it was fixed next day when Dr. Kempf called to tell me the results of the blood test and told me what to do to get my dog better. Dr. Kempf was friendly and very professional as always. Daisy was better overnight. The prices are very affordable, the wait is long indeed, but they know what they are doing and my dogs act like they are going to a dog park, very excited and happy to visit. Also, they sent a reminder when their shots are due, that saves me for trying to remember when go back.

Then prescribed her unnecessary medication to her so they could bill me for it, didn't even tell me the results of her test I had to ask for them before leaving.

Their mission is to make responsible pet ownership affordable for those whose love for animals might not match their wallet size. For that, they have my thanks. Read Less

I guess I just don't understand negative reviews relative to my own experience with Herschel. My son and I go over there around 7-7:15 am and are able to secure parking at that time. We get in line with others where there's always friendly talk and an interesting variety of patients waiting for the doors to open at 8:00. We have always had very courteous and kind treatment by staff, helpful pet care tips, etc. it's rather fun going there. Life is what you make it. This place is great....the wait really wasn't that long-- I think I waited twenty-five minutes-tops, and I was a walk-in. The vet tech let me know exactly how long each process would take, and then I was done. On top of that, I spent probably a tenth of what it would have cost if I went elsewhere. The place is decently clean (it is a vet's office) and the staff is really friendly. I saw some neurotic animal people in there--maybe they're the ones leaving the lower ratings. Read Less

I would not say staff is overly friendly but are good at their jobs & animal is well taken care of, the main thing people should remember is these Drs. are your pets Dr. & that is who needs the service not you. I do not care if my sweet puppy was ill & this was the last animal clinic on earth!!! I will NEVER return to that clinic again & neither should you!!! It's not worth it!!! Read Less

It's on a first come first served basis so you should get here early.  Line usually starts at 7:30am.  This place does what they say they do.  They are a wellness and preventative health vet clinic.  There are no bells and whistles, you just come in and get what you need and go.  I have had two occasions to use their services and have been pleased.  If you are looking for a vet that "wines and dines" you and your pet, you won't get it here.  For routine yearly care they are ideal and the prices are affordable.

Read Less
