Riverside Animal Hospital

This is a top-notch neighborhood pet hospital.  I bring my 13 y.o. Cockapoo (dog) and 10 y.o Toy Poodle here, and my elderly client's 10 older former rescue cats who have various maladies.  I need to mention the front desk staff because I am grateful  for them every time I call Dr Rossi's office-- to me, it shows his values that he hires and retains such quality people. They are so responsive and professional.  Dr Rossi is a dedicated and smart guy who is very current on the latest research and treatments.  I can't fathom why someone in another review would say he didn't seem to care, but he is a low key person-- certainly not an arrogant guy-- and doesn't draw attention to all of his accomplishments and expertise.  He's an easy Vet to relate to on kind of an equal level, and one that you can consider various approaches with.  It's a blessing to have this resource in our neighborhood. This was my first visit to their office. I brought a 3 week puppy I obtained recently there because she couldn't have a bowel movement. Everyone in the office is friendly and knowledgeable, and Dr. Rossi is an old school vet who seems to really know his stuff. They didn't try to over sell anything. Only what was needed was offered. I am happy to have found this office! I will return shortly for the puppies upcoming shots that are needed. Very pleased. Read Less

Dr. Rossi & his staff are not only affordable but also go above and beyond for their clients. I came to them in an emergency for my dog without prior history of being a client, but they immediately took care of him and called me throughout the day to update me about everything going on. Through the rest of Cooper's recovery, Dr. Rossi would text me to check in on him, even answering my concerns at midnight on a Saturday. When I wasn't comfortable leaving Cooper alone, they allowed me to board him with them and took excellent care. I could tell all of the staff truly care about the animals and always are so sweet despite how crazy of a dog mom I'm being. I was so pleased with my experience that I'm leaving our previous vet to have Dr. Rossi as our primary vet. Highly recommend them! Read Less

On April 14th I brought My dog in because she had gotten out of the yard, came back and she was acting strange and didn't want to stand. The vet did no tests, checked her heart and said it was probably congenital heart failure because she was a senior dog, gave medication to "stabilize" her and told us to come back for testing on the following Monday. When we got home her condition got worse and worse. We took her to the emergency vet where they actually did testing and found that there was nothing wrong with her heart. She had an extremely low white blood cell count because she had a horrible infection due to what the vets determined was a pierced mass in her stomach. I had to put her down the next morning after staying over night in the hospital. I wish Riverside Animal Hospital would have done the testing when I brought her in and expressed how concerned I was. Maybe we could have done something before the infection had spread, or at the very least, I could have euthanized her in a way that did not involve 24 hours in an emergency vet clinic. Read Less

I'm very happy with the service and the staff at Riverside. When it comes to my babies I am particular and picky! My kiddos get the best and whatever they need and Riverside staff are a caring group and I'm glad I found them. The price is good for what we had done and will have the ol chompers cleaned there for all of the "kids". Riverside is a better choice than the large boxstore vets and a much better value! Read Less

I have familiarized myself with Riverside Animal Hospital all too well since I've lived here this summer. The staff is great with both of my dogs. They have a shot clinic from 7-10 on Saturdays for walk-ins. We are standing in line to check in and a lady with a cat zips in and signs the sheet in front of us. We were waiting to ask about the clinic and the process. Apparently, it's the sign in sheet. The fascade of the building is filthy and needs a good power washing. The waiting room is small and cramped with the most uncomfortable bench seating. We brought our puppies shot records, which showed 1st, and 2nd set of shots. A tech on the other side of the counter proceeds to talk to us from behind the counter in front of at least 12 people in the waiting room, asking why we were there. We explained per the shot records we needed the 3rd set of puppy shots. She said this is the first time we have seen them so they need to start at the 1st set. What! Who does not accept the certified health certificate from prior vet? We said no way look at the records we brought from the breeder. She looked at them and said they have only had 1st set so they need 2nd. I had to contact the breeder during our appt. to confirm as they could not understand the records we brought. All of this going on in front of everyone in waiting room. Finally, get called back after an hour wait. Keep in mind this is a shot clinic. It should be an assembly line process. While in the procedure room with a completely different tech, who by the way was very helpful and extremely nice, the first tech comes in. We explained to her that we are doing the 3rd set of shots per information from paperwork and breeder. She then tells me our puppies are only 9 weeks so it's too early. Our puppies are 11 weeks on Monday. I tell her this and she doesn't believe me. She pulls out her calendar and counts the weeks. The whole experience was so embarrassing and stressful. A dog, argentine tegu (large reptile), and two bearded dragons. My tegu was experiencing skin issues and had an infection. I set up an appointment and was seen within 15 minutes from arriving. Dr. Rossi took his time looking at my tegu, examined his skin, asked all of the right questions and was extremely helpful. With an exam, two weeks worth of injections, and a skin cream, my trip was less than $160 with my student discount. He did so great with Mojo, my Tegu, so I started bringing my rescue dog in. He also had serious skin issues and I couldn't figure out what was causing it. His first visit he was examined and got medication. Dr. Rossi also discussed possible causes and mentioned I should try changing a few things like detergents, checking him after he goes outdoors, inspecting the carpets for bugs etc. his meds helped his skin within two days! After a couple months the issue came back and we went to see Dr. Rossi again. We ended up doing an allergy panel and it turns out my dog is allergic to a million different things and we needed to change his food and keep him away from areas with a lot of pollen. Everything was changed and my dog and reptiles are thriving. I couldn't thank him enough. I just moved back to California and I hope I find a vet as great as him. Read Less

Brought my pet rabbit to this clinic years ago.  Told them she had not been well, but, please call me in regards to her treatment since I was leaving her there to go to work.  Never received a call, even though I called, left message and no one returned that call.  When I arrived I was told by their dr that if I wanted my rabbit to live I needed to force feed her for a while to see if I could bring her around.  She had a large furball in her stomach.   I left feeling hopeless and watched my sweet lil bunny suffer for days before passing away!  I did everything this dr told me to do.  Instead of him saying that the humane thing would have been to put her down and let her go, he never mentioned it at all.  He made it sound like there was still hope if I did what he said.  Horrible experience!  I would never recommend this dr for anyone who loves animals. They saved my puppy from getting put down. I went to another vet and told me my pup had a deadly disease and that there was no cure. I drove over an hour to Riverside Animal Hospital and they figured out what was wrong with him instantly. He is a happy pup once again and should live a long healthy life. I am so thankful fo them. Unhelpful. I brought a new dog from a shelter and they didn't explain anything. The vet looked at the dog and left without saying anything. The "nurse" spent a long time telling me to buy expensive food. No mention of heart worms or overall health of the dog. Read Less

They were nice when I've taken my own animals here, but was not pleased when calling to set up an appointment for my sister and am still not pleased. I called this weekend and they seemed annoyed about me making an appointment. Then, my sister gave them my number to call for bloodwork results on Monday and I never received a call. I called yesterday (Tuesday), and asked for the results and they said they were busy and would call me back. Never got that call. And, of course they're closed today so still wondering what the results are. Read Less

Made an appointment for an annual exam and vaccinations. Clarified at check-in that we were there for ANNUAL EXAM and VACCINATIONS. The waiting area was filthy. The office area was messy and disorganized. We were brought back to a dirty exam room with stuff piled in the sink and fur all over the exam table. The vet tech came in to give injections. She was wearing a fleece vest CAKED with excrement. She gave one injection and then put our cat in his carrier. He hissed when she tried to get him out for the second injection and she then attempted to give him the injection while he was HUDDLED IN THE CORNER OF HIS CARRIER. I got him out and held him while she did the second injection. She then said we were done. I asked about the annual exam. She said that she didn't know we were there for an annual exam as well. She did offer to get the doctor. The staff was all friendly, but by this time I had had enough of the filth, incompetence, disorganization, and lack of communication. As much as I try to "stay local" with our business dealings, I will be taking our cat to a different vet to complete the exam portion. I care very much about my cat's health and I expect much better. Had one terrible experience here with euthanasia for a cat, which was botched by Dr. Rossi withhorrifying results. My cat went into seizures and fell off the exam table. He then was going to charge me until I reminded him that I was crying with a dead cat and would go in the lobby and tell everyone what I just experienced if he was going to charge me, over $500, for what had just transpired. However, I chalked that up at the time to mistake/bad reaction to meds.  Now I've had a second very bad experience. I took another cat, who was urinating frequently and outside the litter box to see Dr. Rossi this summer. Dr. Rossi insisted, over my objections, that he must sedate my cat before examining it, my cat who was good-natured and tame and does not scratch, having no claws on his forepaws. The exam was perfunctory at best, Dr. Rossi spent a minute or two with me, and gave my cat one injection of a broad-spectrum antibiotic. The charge for this non-service was $530 . There was no follow up from his office about my cats condition and then when my cat presented with blood in his urine, I had to find a competent veterinarian. I found one at the Miramar animal clinic with Dr. Stacy, however, by this point my cat had a chronic kidney infection that would not respond to antibiotics and he passed away this weekend. I cannot strongly emphasize enough that you should not use Dr. Rossi. His practices are questionable, his fees outrageous and his diagnoses are suspect. I had the worst experience here and hope that people read this so they don't bring their animals here. I brought my 8 year old cat in for a check-up and to get flea medicine and came in to pick him up with a bill of several hundred dollars and a list of procedures and medicines that were given to him without my consent. The Dr. came in to tell me how sick my cat was didn't shake my hand and barely looked me in the eye the whole time he described what they did, even when he knew i was getting upset. I did give approval for a couple of things but not as many as they did and none of the meds they gave my cat. I didn't even get a chance to get a second opinion somewhere else. I told my mom and my sister, who also live in the area, about my experience and they too have had the same kind of experience as me. I wished i had called them first! Read Less

I'm honestly surprised this establishment has such great reviews. We had our pit mix fixed here well over a month ago. Her recovery was normal but after 3 weeks the stitches were still in. So we called and they advised us to bring her in. We had planned to bring her in anyway cause she had a slight limp. So while she was under for X-rays, they removed the rest of her stiches, or so we thought. We noticed a bump last week and tonight we pulled about a 2-inch piece of stitching from her. She still has a hard bump there, most likely because she could never heal properly due to the string still being in her. I also agree with other reviews saying that they over charge. While sitting and waiting for my appointment, which I arrived early for and still waited for over an hour, the numbers I heard them charging were astronomical. Of course I don't know the exact needs of these clients pets, but it seemed excessive. This is the FIRST review I've ever left, but I had to get this out there. Maybe Dr. Rossi is great with other animals, but after spending close to $1000 here within 2 months, we aren't very happy at all. Read Less

Great staff and an excellent vet. If you have exotics, this is the place to take them, no doubt about it. Riverside Animal Hospital is staffed by wonderful people, and even in the hardest times of pet ownership, they'll take care of you. Dr. Rossi's experience with reptiles and exotics is so important when dealing with these animals that do their best to hide illness. I'd recommend Riverside Animal Hospital to anyone. Read Less

They have always done a wonderful job no matter the situation, from bringing puppies into this world via cesarean to diagnosing cancer along with the assisting with bringing a peaceful end when the time has come. The absolute BEST veterinarian/animal hospital in north FL! I take my Austrialian Shepard "Sabbath", Shorkies "Turbo", and "Mia". Sabbath has heart worms and Dr. Rossi has been amazing at explaining how it effects him and the treatment to take. I could write an essay on how pleased I am with the service of everyone in the office from the receptionist to the Dr. They are all very knowledgeable and don't mind spending time with you to answer and help with any questions/concerns!!! I've been going to Dr Rossi for over five years. He is always very informative and down to earth. He is the go to Doc for exotic pets and reptiles. Once I watched as a woman brought her most dead lizard in after she had babies and she was hysterical. To see the relief and joy on her face after he got her fluids , etc back to normal ranges was priceless!I own sugar gliders and skunks and this is who I use for them. If they were closer I'd always go here. My daughter drive from Orlando to have him check up on her bearded dragon. He has written many books and just came out with a new one about turtles. I have listened to him on the Saturday radio show many times and full of great information. I'm very happy with my care here and it may not be super fancy here but in turn it keeps my cost down at check out. Read Less

I was very pleased with Dr. Rossi and crew. You can tell they truly love animals. It was my first visit here. I called and got an appt. for the same day. I had suspected my kitty had a UTI and they took samples to confirm. They hooked him up with an antibiotic shot and he is feeling much better! Dr. Rossi was kind, answered my questions and gave me some suggestions on his diet and even noticed my kitty had asthma.. something I always knew but was never officially diagnosed.  I will be returning when my pets need vet care. I just took my dachshund, Dorota, here today and I was amazed at the great service I received. The vet techs were very accommodating, and the Dr. Rossi took the time to answer all my questions about her stomach issues. They were understanding of my college-student budget and even gave a 10% discount because of it. They knew she was a bit of a nervous wreck and said they would put her in a more quiet room and away from other dogs until she calmed down and took great care of her!I haven't been to a better vet in Jacksonville, and I will continue using them as my go-to from now on. When my foster kittens got sick and my regular vet couldn't see them until the following day, I went to Riverside Animal Hospital on a friend's recommendation. Once I said my friend's name (she's a great animal rescue lady) they fit me in right away.Overall, I wasn't really impressed.  I was really worried about the rectum of my female kitten, and they gave me some cream and said it wasn't a big deal. The next day, her rectum prolapsed and she had to get emergency surgery. (If you want to know what a prolapsed rectum is - google it - but only if you can stomach it.) I have no idea if the vet could've known this would happen, but more concern would've been nice.I felt like the vet didn't really listen to me. He kind of talked "around" me and then he gave me a free copy of his book about cats. I appreciated the book, but I wanted to be heard. I ask a lot of questions when I go to a vet, but it's because I love my pets and want to be a good mom. I knew they'd charge me two office visits b/c I had both kittens with me, so why was he rushing me?The other thing I found strange was that it wasn't very clean. I was sitting on the floor with my kittens and I could see fur and dirt caked along the floor boards. The door in the back of the exam room peaked into an office that looked like the beginnings of a Hoarders episode. I think you should go here and make your own decision. I have been a client of Dr.Rossi at riverside for 2 years now, Dr. Rossi and his staff has always given the best care to my cat pebbles. The service here is excellent! I also have a snake which no one see's here in jacksonville and he recommended me to deworm her since she had not been eatng, two weeks i went back to repeat the deworming and my snake started eating agian, He then recommended me to pick up one of his books whats wrong with my snake which has became very helpful and has saved me money in the long run. very pleased with Dr. Rossi and his knowledgable staff. shoudl not even be 1 star! I took my cat in to have a mat removed and get his yearly shots, I walked in to a $143.00 bill when I was originally told it would be $40.00 and to beat all 2 days later I noticed the mat was still there. When I called to complain they wanted me to ""bring him back so they coudl complete the job"" WHAT??? Why did they not complete it the first time? This is the WORST place I have ever been and the professionalism iand attitude of all the staff including Dr.. Rossi is just POOR!!! Please don't take your pets there if you love and care about them. Im not pleased at all with riverside, as their staff does the work required but often overlooks the need for some forms of professionalism that really is needed in this line of work. I would notice that they were leaving clients in rooms for an hour or more waiting on the vet or tests and wouldnt bother to check in with the patients during the wait, they also would not communicate with patients past the point of finding out why the pet was brought in, and it was sadly very rare to see any of them approach a customer/patient with a positive and personable attitude. I think these idiots have killed my mom's dog. I live in Avondale and have taken my dog here twice because they are so close. Both times, though I think they did a good job. The staff is just very unfriendly and unorganized. So I advised my mom to take her dog here and she has on a few occasions, this has become her regular vet. She gets groomed there and has a procedure done where they put her to sleep to trim her nails down really, really low. Well these last 2 times, it takes her a while to get back to normal. This last time, she never did. Then we noticed she had blood in her urine and took her back to the vet to get checked out, they said she had a urinary track infection and gave her some pills. Well nothing helped. Today, she woke up looking half dead, unable to walk and shaking constantly. My parents took her to the emergency hospital and they are telling us that she is like a train wreck. This dog is not even 2 years old yet and has never had an issues. She is a house dog, is monitored when she does go out and doesn't play with any other dogs, except my dog, occasionally. The Emergency doc said that she now has all kinds of infections, her blood isn't clotting correctly, and she is dehydrated, her temp is low, etc. So now the poor baby is hooked up to an IV and has to stay overnight and they don't think that she will make it. I took my dog to this doctor when I first moved to Jacksonville.  He placed my dog on a pain medication and charged me $65 for 1 ounce of medication which he gave me in his own bottle and not in the actual product bottle.  I get this medication from her current doctor and it's $65 for 5 ounces.In addition, he tried to take blood from my dog.  My dog got very defensive and yelped in pain every time the doctor tried to take blood.  She has never reacted this way before and I told the doctor that.  He responded with "I buy the smallest guage needles I can find."  Having worked in the medical device industry for twenty years there is only one reason to buy a large guage needle.  I let the readers draw their own conclusions.I will never return to this doctor for the above reasons. The staff helped ""guide"" my pet onto the scale with their foot, as if my dog was a piece of furniture. The room were the doctor checks pets, has a two way door, where the staff constantly walks through the examination room. When I asked for my receipt, their printer was out of ink, I asked the staff to email me my receipt, and they never did so. I wil not go back. Read Less

I recently bought 3 baby turtles. One of them developed a white sore on his back foot so i needed to take him to a vet, i asked a couple of pet stores and they all recommended Dr. Rossi. So i called and set up an appointment the next day. When i got there they were all really helpful. When i was taken back into the office i only waited a few minutes before my nurse came in, her name was Kim. She talked to me about what it could be and was really helpful and handled my little boy very well. When Dr. Rossi came in he was very helpful with everything, gave my turtle a shot and told me what to do to help it get better. After we went home, a few days later it was looking worse so we went back. Dr. Rossi kept my baby over night and had an answer for me in the morning, along with some antibiotics to give him. Since he's so little i was afraid to give him the shots so they said it was perfectly fine for me to take him back in for them to give the shots. Like i said, this is a very very warm staff, very helpful and answered all questions i had [with confidence, i might add] the only thing i don't like about this office is the lady who answers the phone. I'm new to the area, and this was the closest vet. I read the reviews and was confident I could de-claw and neuter my kitten here. I have 2 other animals who have had the same exact procedures so i knew what to expect. I had my husband pick him up from the vets office and when I got back home he was not able to stand or walk.. which is reasonable given his procedure.. It took my cat several days to walk even with anitbiotics and pain medication every 12 hours. Even now- 3 weeks after the fact, he tends to stay off his front feet. There is a HUGE gash on one of his ""toes"" that im not quite sure was caused by the procedure or the recoop. Also- I'm not a veternarian, but when my other cats have been declawed, they have the pads intact on thier feet.. This kitten has cuts on every single ""toe"" pad. Considering I've been through this before with other animals, I feel that this office did not take care of my animals procedure accordingly, as I would not suggest this office to anyone in need of this particular procedure. I recently moved to the area and have been taking my dog there. They were quick ( 1 hour) to see my dog when I called with a concern. When I made an appointment for neutering again they were able to see my dog within a week. Prices are higher than other Vets in the area but not much, but I'd rather pay extra to know my dogs in good hands. One thing I have noticed is that they aren't always the most informative but they will take time to explain if you have questions.. I have been taking my dogs to RAH for about six years. I have found Dr Rossi to be very professional and honest with his answers to my questions. Even after he administered the ""pink juice"" to my 15 year old dog, he offered condolences and assured me that it was the right thing to do, which was great because I was a mess. His staff later sent a card, which I appreciated. The assistants and other techs have always been great. Follow-up visits for certain complicated procedures have been priced reasonably, and occasionally not charged at all, depending on the circumstances. The front office can get a bit chaotic, with cats, dogs, reptiles, skunks, birds, and other creatures hanging out together in one small room. The only thing that might need improving is a method to organize the waiting area a bit because people tend to come in and stand in line instead of seating themselves, while others seat them selves and people who walk in after get inline in front of them, inadvertently, of course. The pricing for procedures is a-la-carte. I wish their form had better instructions, or at least some guidance as to what to select. The prices for routine preventive medicines, such as flea, tick and heart worm prevention are probably list price, which makes them seem expensive compared to places which discount a bit. Other than those quibbles, I think my pets receive very good care at RAH and I will continue to go there. Read Less

This was without a doubt the worst experience I have encountered at a Vets office. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. I took my sick german sheperd mix in.The staff thats works at this clinic are rude, disorganized and so slow. They never acknowledged that I came in the door,even after I signed in. My wait time to even get in to a room was 2 hrs.When I finally saw the Dr. he never looked at me and seemed so distracted. His name was Dr. Rossi. He spent more time kidding and laughing with the girl assisting him than he did looking at my dog. No one ever explained the wait,though there were just a few animals there. While I was in the room waiting to see Dr. Rossi I could hear him talking and eating with his assistant who was overtly rude to me.After given antibiotics and dismissed I was charged 175.00.
