Dr. Zellner and her staff are wonderful. We took our birds there because she is the first vet we’ve found who has an innate ability to connect with them. And she knows what she is doing. She won’t try to up sell you in every service available but she will encourage you to do what is necessary. We loved her clinic so much we willingly drove from Brandon to see her. I cannot say enough great things about this place! It's so stressful to go to a new vet and entrust the care of your critters to someone new, but this was such a great experience. I have seen other reviews mention that it is expensive here, but I found it to be comparable with other vets in the area.  Even if it were a bit more expensive I would gladly pay extra for their excellent service.I brought in my new rescue leopard gecko with suspicions of MBD. Both Dr. Passarelli and the vet tech (unfortunately I do not remember his name) were both kind, thorough, and so patient. Dr. Passarelli even sat with me for a bit after the exam to answer questions and help me develop my "game plan" for Truffle's recovery strategy. I never once felt rushed, nor did I feel that they tried to push any unnecessary tests or products on me (which I have experienced at other places.) Also, every other staff member today was incredibly friendly. It says a lot about a place when the people seem happy to be there and care about all animals - even teeny little geckos. I have a few pets with two of them being a parrot and a leopard gecko. We moved here from NJ and found that in MY area (I live an hour from Largo), coming by an Avian/Reptile vet is not easy. After doing some research after my LG fell ill, I came across Dr. Z and her veterinary hospital. Although I was a new patient, they fit my Izzy in pretty quickly! I drove an hour and a half in a pretty wicked storm in hopes that she'd be able to help my LG with whatever was happening to his eyes... in which it seemed as though he was going blind. Well, I was absolutely relieved to have driven that long to see her! She is wildly talented and educated and knew within minutes what her condition was. Yes, HER. We were also corrected on her sex! haha. She handled this reptile with care and yet she was so smooth and relaxed, even when the lizard was not too happy with her! Dr. Z completely impressed me with her down-to-earth personality, care for our family's beloved lizard, and knowledge with her condition and how to treat it. This visit was well worth the drive and I'm even considering coming here as a regular client with my parrot and the lizard, even with an hours drive. I know these two would be in good hands with her. No words. Their response is untrue. I never demanded a refund of the fee . They were rude and gave poor customer service and would not honor contracted insurance discount. The office manager outright refused to give discount and I asked if she was willing to lose a patient over a small discount to which she began to argue so I said that this was simply a yes or no question and obviously she was telling me no. If anyone has a bird and needs to have them checked out this is the place to go! I just took my English budgie for a check up because he was showing signs of respiratory distress. Dr. Zellner is amazing! She's filled with so much knowledge and really has your pets best interest in mind. As far as the visit fees they are so reasonable, the visit was 79.50, and the antibiotic she prescribed was 19.63. As I was checking out the front desk told me I had a credit of 79.50 from back in 2015. Back in 2015 I had another budgie that need emergency medical attention, they were able to get me in right away, I can not remember what the visit fee was, but they did do a 99.00 dollar deduction for the oxygen they provided for my bird. they're a godsend.  i had 3 young squirrels blow out of the top of 40' bamboo onto rock-hard cement in a strong storm the other night.  they all 3 weren't moving.  i googled "squirrel rescue;" the first place i spoke to told me to put them near the base of their nest for the mama to come and get them, which was helpful (the mama didn't come back & i had to turn the hose on a hawk & a stalking tomcat twice), but i had concerns after i read the first place i called reviews.  so i called my vet who said to call avian, which treats wildlife.  i had to do something rather than just watch them die of dehydration, etc.  avian took them in immediately-- the staff was sweet, kind & reassuring, they put the 3 squirrels in an incubator and told me that they seemed good.  the staff asked for a small, voluntary donation (i donated a little extra to help folks that maybe can't donate), the 3 young squirrels then went to a wildlife rehab that avian works with & which had about 450 very good reviews.  again, avian was a godsend. Dr. Z and the entire staff is amazing! Dr. Z's is absolutely phenomenal with Avian. I brought my whole flock of 4 cockateils in for their annual exams and she was so patient with each and every one of them. She provides such gentle care and it shows that she genuinely cares about every animal she touches! My first time walking through the door and I wasn't greeted with as much as even a smile or a hello. The young lady sitting at the desk made me feel very unwelcome. I was suppose should be there 10-15 minutes earlier. Anyone with children knows how school mornings can be. Instead of a friendly greeting, I was scolded for not being timely. Yes, I was late, but would it hurt you to be kind? Smile? Did that 15 minutes really make you dislike me that much? Don't places like these realize that a friendly and welcoming staff means everything and puts people at ease, making them feel welcome and comfortable? Sadly, there are probably excellent vets there. I rarely write reviews but after my experience with this clinic, I feel compelled to warn everybody. I went to Avian and Animal Hospital with my senior dog to check a lump on her chest. Dr. Zellner and the staff were very nice, however, after examining my dog by touch, Dr. Zellner recommended surgery for which I was presented with a written estimate of over $900.00. Not only it caused me great stress and worry about my dog's health and the bill I was facing, but it also surprised me how quickly Dr. Zellner jumped to the decision that surgery was necessary on my senior dog (which involves submitting her to a risky anesthesia) only after touching the lump. I decided to go to other doctors to receive a second and third opinion. The next doctor I saw, not only determined that the lump was a benign fatty tumor but also found additional similar fatty tumors on my dog's chest that dr. Zellner didn't even find. He was confident that these were fatty tumors that did not require surgery but I was so paranoid and panicked about the first (dr. Zellner's opinion) that I insisted that he performed biopsy in order to make sure he was right. The biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of the lumps being benign fatty tumors. I went ahead and obtained a third doctor's opinion, which only confirmed that the second doctor was right. Meanwhile, the Avian and Animal Hospital was calling and texting me to schedule the surgery. I came back there to pick up my dogs blood work results, which was done in preparation for the surgery and for which I was charged $176 plus $60 per visit. The receptionist informed me that it would be $5 (!) charge to obtain a 1-page print of my dog's blood work results - after I already paid them $236 for almost scamming me into the unnecessary surgery. Stay away from this clinic - it is exactly like one of the previous reviewers noted - they care more about money than for your pet's health. Instead, I highly recommend Enterprise Rd. Animal Hospital of Dr. Carlos Pola (727-797-PETS) in Clearwater. He is honest and offers much better prices e.g. approx. $40 for a biopsy as opposed to over $200 at Avian and Animal Hospital. By the way, the biopsy was not even offered to me as an option at Avian Hospital but they included the cost of biopsy on my estimate for it to be performed after the lump's removal. Read Less

I was very disappointed in this animal hospital.  My pet suddenly was not able to walk.  I went here because of the great reviews.  There was no one in the waiting room and only one car in the parking lot.  When I took my pet in I saw several staff members sitting around and talking.  I thought "great, we should be able to get help promptly."  The person at the front desk asked if we had been there before.  We had not. She excused herself and came back a little bit later and said they couldn't help because they were booked.  It was a little after 3:00 so it wasn't like they were ready to close or they had an office full of patients.  I would never come back to this office.  I went to another animal clinic in Clearwater (Belcher) and couldn't have been more pleased. I have never had a vet care so deeply about my animal. I brought my rabbit in a few years ago because he suddenly lost the ability to move and they nursed him back to health, caring for him in house every day including Thanksgiving. They also called me every other day with an update and didnt get annoyed I kept checking in. They took such good care of him and when he died they sent me a hand written sympathy card. The shelter I adopted from do their neutering/spaying through this location, so my first experience with them was when I brought my puppy in for a neuter. They are so friendly and helpful. They carried Walter (my dog) out and into my car for me when I came to pick him up! If they were closer to my home I would use them all the time but even with the drive I have gone back a few times.
