***** Customer Beware***** We went to Animal Eye Associates for eye surgery on our 7 month-old 80lb cane corso puppy, Cleo, who had cherry eyes in both eyes. The procedure was explained to my husband and I that if the eye pops back out naturally we would have to pay again which we agreed to. We paid them over $2000 dollars to do the surgery for both eyes. We got the surgery done on a Thursday and when we picked Cleo up she was heavily sedated. She was groggy on Friday, but after the sedation completely wore off on Saturday, Cleo started doing everything to get the cone off of her head which caused one of her eyes to pop back out. We called them and explained to them what happened and was told to come in on Tuesday. However, I called on Monday morning to see if we could come in immediately instead. When we went back on Monday I had to ask them for sedatives to keep Cleo calm while her other eye healed. When asked why we didn’t receive the medication from the start they said its not common practice, and that it was a judgement call. I spoke to the office manager who was less than helpful and she said that we would have to pay again (approx. $900) since her eye popped back out naturally which was incorrect. My husband and I even asked to speak to the owner, thinking he would be more reasonable and would work with us, given the situation, but he read from the same office script and refused to work with us. He ‘agreed to disagree,’ saying it popped out naturally, so we would have to pay again. Immediately after talking to him, I requested Cleo’s file and in their own report they wrote that “Cleo’s e-collar was completely destroyed and the suture was gone, so most likely she was too active and was somehow able to damage the surgery site.” After reading the negative reviews I see were not the only ones. Hopefully this review gives you an insight to Animal Eye Associates business practices and help save someone from going through the same issue. I would be filing complaints with all the appropriate parties moving forward and weigh my options for small claims court. Read Less

Don’t take your dog to Dr. Daniel Priehs at Animal Eye Associates in Maitland, Florida! He totally blinded my dog! I brought my dog to Animal Eye in Maitland because his cataracts were starting to interfere with his vision. He could still see but it was becoming more and more difficult for him. He is an older dog and I realized that there were risks for complications but I decided to take him there to see if they could help him see better. Dr. Priehs examined him and did several expensive tests, costing over $1,000.00, and told me that my dog would be a good candidate for cataract removal with a lens implant. Unfortunately my dog’s retina detached a couple of days after the surgery, which left him completely blind in that eye. Dr. Priehs told me that my dog had unfortunately fallen into the 5% of cases that has this kind of result. There was supposedly a 95% chance that he would do well. I took it in stride and asked Dr. Priehs about the chance of doing the other eye in order to restore his sight. Dr. Priehs also told me there would be a slightly increased risk of the other eye’s retina detaching since it had happened to the first one. I asked him how much of an increased risk and he told me it would be another 5% risk, making it a 90% chance that it would not happened to the other eye. With that we went ahead with the other eye in hopes of restoring his sight. The second eye’s retina detached and this left my dog completely blind. I spent over $7,000.00 for these two surgeries and put my dog through it ending up with nothing but a completely blinded dog, much worse than with the cataracts! He can no longer run and bumps into things all the time. I have to carry him from place to place and sometimes must hand feed him. It is a lot of work and so discouraging since my dog was very socially active prior to all this. After talking with other veterinarians and physicians I have come to realize that the risks were much higher than 5-10%. I feel cheated and lied to and I wonder if it was all just a money grab by Dr. Priehs and Animal Eye Associates. Read Less

Doctors and staff are professional, yet in my dog's case, the price tag of $300 per visit every 2 weeks was ridiculous especially once I started to buy some of the medications online for much cheaper. Yes, specialists are more expensive, but they could have helped more with discounts on multiple visits. But, even small animal vets should reward loyalty or if you have them service multiple animals, give at least some discounts, but, alas, like human doctors, why would they ever do that? The regimen of different eye meds to be administered was 2, 3, and 4 times per day. I got sick from sleep deprivation after 2 months of this, not to mention my poor elderly dog's sleep deprivation. No alternatives to the tough regimen were ever suggested, like perhaps multiple drops in the dog's eyes, so I wonder if they were just wanting to collect their "annuity" payments every 2 weeks while I struggled to keep paying for the treatments (to cataracts in both eyes that had grown quickly developing ulcers and inflammation). I have a purebred cat that was having some eye pressure problem with one eye and my regular vet was not sure what the cause was and had me treat him with glaucoma eye drops every day for one year. He checked the eye pressure every two months and for a long time it was ok. Finally one day the drops didn't seem to work anymore and I decided to take my cat to this clinic. As soon as the vet examined him they knew he had an ulcer in his eye that my regular vet could not detect. One week of a specific eye drop for the problem and my cat was back to his old self and all healed. I wish I would have gone sooner, but glad the problem is solved. The only complaint I have is that they are very expensive and I wish they could be more affordable.Read Less

I recently took my cat to Animal Eye Associates because my regular Veterinarian could not figure out about my cats eye. Dr Priehs in the first 5 minutes of my exam informed me that my cat was exposed to a virus that cause some tissue to adhere to his cornea. He eased my mind by letting me know that even though he has a strange looking eye he can still see shadows and his vision in no way is impaired. It was such a relief to finally have a diagnosis and know that my cat is healthy besides a funny looking eye. The staff was so helpful and amazing. I can not wait for the office in Waterford Lakes to open as it is closer to my house. I can not say enough about Dr Priehs and his staff. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone. My 6-year-old toy fox terrier, Timmy, developed diabetes-related bilateral cataracts. We were heartbroken, devastated by the news that all he could distinguish was day from night. Dr. Priehs and his wonderful staff performed cataract surgery on both eyes in one day. Timmy now has his happy life back. We owe our dog's life to this surgery, as he was not adjusting well to his vision loss. Anyone considering this surgery can definitely trust their animal to Animal Eye Associates. They will be in skilled, caring hands. Read Less
