If I could give negative stars, I would. I brought my 12-year-old dog to Calusa Animal Crossing, where we saw Dr. Vasallo, because I noticed a growth near his eye. From the start, Dr. Vasallo took a doom-and-gloom approach. Without much examination, he told me it was likely a tumor and said he wasn’t comfortable treating it — he’d refer me to a specialist. He mentioned possibly prescribing eyedrops but quickly started piling on additional treatments that made no sense. He insisted my dog had an ear infection and was “itchy,” even though I explained clearly that he hasn’t shown any signs of discomfort — no scratching, no head shaking, nothing. Dr. Vasallo dismissed my input and told me I simply wasn’t noticing it. He also made a comment that my dog “wasn’t easy” and that I needed to be cautious — which felt completely unfair. My dog is incredibly sweet, just understandably nervous in a vet setting. Instead of showing compassion, Dr. Vasallo made me feel like my dog was a burden. Then came the pricing: it took an extremely long time to get an itemized list, during which my dog became increasingly anxious. When they finally brought it, the estimate was over $700 — for eyedrops, eardrops, a shot for itching (that my dog didn’t have), and the exam fee. I told them I couldn’t afford that and didn’t agree with most of what was recommended. We finally settled on the eyedrops, eardrops, and the $70 exam fee. Even getting those items and checking out took forever. We had to ask multiple times, and my dog was stressed to the point of trembling by the time we could leave. Here’s the real kicker: I took my dog to a different vet shortly after, and the experience was completely different. The staff was kind and gentle. The vet was calm and thorough — and he confirmed that while the eye growth is a tumor, it’s small and very easy to remove under local anesthesia. He explained that these often start as styes and are very manageable — no specialist required. Oh, and the total cost? Much lower than what Calusa quoted — and with far better care. In hindsight, I feel completely taken advantage of by Dr. Vasallo and Calusa Animal Crossing. I walked out $200+ poorer with nothing but stress and confusion — and my dog walked out more anxious than ever. I've been coming to this office for over 10 years with my pet. They have great doctors and techs but for the past couple of years, something has seriously changed with their office management staff. They no longer seem to want to engage or provide service to their customers. If you call no one answers, goes straight to a voice service. If you call to try to pick up meds for your pet, good luck, they won't answer. Their new wait in the car policy is terrible, they don't want you in their office until they are ready to see you. They reached out to me to schedule an appointment for my pet (which is the only time you'll hear from them) I showed up 5 minutes early with the hope that they would answer the phone when I arrived because they have a huge sign posted out front saying DO NOT KNOCK ON THE DOOR OR TRY TO COME INSIDE, call them when you here and they'll send a tech to get you. So you basically have to sit in your car with a restless pet while you're at their mercy. After a 25 minute wait past my actual appointment, I made several calls to them asking what was going on. They didn't seem to care and said they are attending to other pets. Why make an appointment then? Why keep pet owners and their pets locked in a vehicle way over their appointment times? I've had enough of their bad service, at the end of the day they seem more interested in your wallet and less interested in treating you like a person. Read Less
