Sky Lake Animal Hospital

On Thursday at 11am I got a call from my dog's daycare saying that my dog had been bitten and that they had taken her next door to Skylake Animal Hospital as they weren't able to stop the bleeding. I work a little further south so I wasnt able to get to Skylake until 12:00pm. When I entered the vet, there were only two women in the facility by the front desk. When they brought me to the back I was shocked to find my 1 year old Labrador crying on the floor of a kennel with blood all over her. The receptionist told me that the doctor had seen her and would take care of it after lunch (by now it's been over an hour that she was untreated and bleeding in this kennel and vet was still nowhere to be found). She explained that they weren't able to give her medications or anything before since they didn't know her allergies or medical history, which I agree is a fair point. But when I asked why they hadn't wrapped her ear or put any form of bandage to stop the bleeding, she had no answer. No one was able to tell me why my dog was left with an actively bleeding wound that she was freely able to scratch at. I immediately requested my dog to be let out of her crate and took her to another vet, who quickly assessed her and bandaged her ear to await stitches.This whole event was the most inhumane treatment I've witnessed at a veterinary office. Although you may not be able to give medications or complete a procedure prior to getting a medical history, there is NO excuse for a dog to be left for over an hour in a kennel with an open and actively bleeding wound that is susceptible to further injury and infection. A Doctor is entitled to lunch. But take CARE of the animals that need help. Put a bandaid. Stop the bleeding. There's no excuse and I will not recommend bringing your animal to sky lake for any treatment when other hospitals in the area are more capable of simply caring. Read Less

Our dog Jorge had had oral surgery for bad teeth about a month ago, and his condition and temperament seemed to improve initially after that surgery. However, despite us feeding him extra food the last month he kept losing weight and was not getting better. Then on Tuesday Jorge had a seizure in the morning and was breathing heavily, and disoriented. We immediately brought him to the vet. The vet (Matthew Cooper) looked at Jorge for a few minutes, did a chest x-ray and tests. With Jorge's age, weight loss, and heart murmur, we suggested euthanasia to the vet who told us that was "off the table" unless the tests showed reason for concern. He would not even let us discuss it. He said Jorge may continue to have these seizure-like episodes but would snap right back within a few minutes. He said everything with the tests and X-ray came back looking "totally normal" and recommended we give Jorge two expensive medications which would "drastically improve" his condition. We had already spent over $2000 on vet bills in the last month or two at that point but were desperate to help him, so we believed the vet was right that Jorge would get better with medications. We received a call shortly after leaving the vet from someone at the office saying Jorge's lungs were actually full of fluid. Why was no treatment plan (or euthanasia) suggested after that? Again we were only told we needed to get him more medication and it would clear up. Then a few hours after leaving the vet, Jorge had a second seizure which was even worse than the first. He was in pain and struggling to breathe. He did not snap back like the vet falsely told us he would. Through the day Jorge continued to get worse. He was weak, barely able to move, seizing, and by the evening he was gasping to breathe due to the fluid in his lungs and his worsening heart. We made the decision to have him euthanized at an emergency vet in Hollywood because he was scared and suffering so badly. It was very painful for our family to make that choice, and even more so because that morning the vet at skylake had given us hope that Jorge was fine according to the tests, and that he would get better with the medication he gave us. We never even got a chance to give him any of the medication because he died before the day was over. Had Dr. Cooper listened to us when we said we wanted to look into euthanasia, perhaps Jorge would not have had to go through the whole day suffering. We feel that Jorge was disregarded by the vet, and that we were taken advantage of. We will never go back to Skylake again and we will take our two other pets to a different vet. Our family knows that this review will not change anything or bring Jorge back. Unfortunately to Skylake Jorge was just a number, or maybe a way to make a buck. We just hope someone at Skylake will read this and perhaps use our experience to be a little more understanding, listen more, and spend more time diagnosing an animal before giving families false hope. My family and I have been coming to Sky Lake Animal Hospital for years, but when Dr.Cooper came in the place became a piggy bank. He's manipulating and makes you feel horrible if you don't pay to get every single unnecessary test done for your pet. A few times we took our dog there and they just tried to push a bunch of unnecessary products at you. I have since found a new vet, and they are cheaper, nicer, and better vets in my opinion. DONT BELIEVE POSITIVE REVIEWS!!! They are fraud. People put positive reviews in order to get bath for free. This is illegal and not fair!!!My dog had an ear issue, and Dr. Mathew put some treatment. But the problem came back after one month, and they wanted to charge me for a visit again..?! Which is absolutely not fare!!! Other words, this place is piggy bank, and all they care is the money and not your pet.I went to another place called - "Caring Hands Animal Hospital" . Super nice and professional people. I am writing this review because I do not want anybody else to suffer the indignity of Dr. Matthew Cooper. He has been my veterinarian for the last 3 1/2 years. My dog Snowball, had a seizure yesterday and when I called his office, which was before 5 o'clock, he was not there. I begged the receptionist to find him and get him back. She could not reach him and suggested I go to the hospital in Fort Lauderdale which is a 45 minute drive away. My dog was in such bad shape I brought her to Aventura veterinary hospital and they saw her immediately. When I was at the hospital I got a call from the nurse saying the doctor showed up again. I told her I was at Aventura hospital. My dog died yesterday and I never got a call from Dr. Matthew Cooper today. He took my money but did not give a damn about my dog. Read Less

I look my Persian here right after I adopted her, and they told me she isn't a Persian, but a Himalayan (not true, she's clearly a Chinchilla Persian...I found that strange, but I guess it didn't interfere with her care, so ok). She had lots oh gunk in her ears, & she sold me a ridiculously overpriced cookie scented ear cleaner. I used it once, but neither I nor she could stand the smell of it. Took my doggy here after a very scary emergency and was helped immediately! Everyone there was super nice and kind to me, my doggy and all the doggies around lol. Dr. G was so caring with my puppy, explained everything to me and made sure to show me the bill so that i knew every procedure and it's cost. Dr. Cooper and staff are really great. When I had a recent emergency requiring hospitalization at a special clinic in Fort Lauderdale for my Yorkie, Dr Cooper contacted this hospital and was able to provide the hospital with my dog's medical records and speak to the staff at the hospital and this was on a Sunday afternoon.  I would recommend Sky Lake Animal Hospital to any who loves their dogs and wants the best. My wife and I took our Cav puppy to Sky Lake and we were very happy with everything. Everyone was friendly and very caring for our puppy. They had her nails trimmed, she got two shots and she didn't complain at all, all because they were very careful. Highly recommend. Read Less

After adopting two kittens from the Humane Society, we wanted to get them checked out, especially considering one of them had an upper respiratory infection. Dr. Cooper knew exactly what to do and was very accommodating. He was level headed, charismatic, knowledgable, and cared for our new kittens very well. We've been back 3 other times for check ups and vaccinations and have requested him every time. He and his team are exactly what every animal hospital should be. I can't believe I never reviewed this clinic. Dr.Gouzopolous (probably butchered the spelling) worked with me at another animal clinic like 5 years ago and after I left there I knew i could trust him because he had never cheated anyone or lied or made anyone do unecessary tests or spend money they dont have. He is by far the most honest and humble vet around especially since he sincerely worries and cares about your pet. Let me tell you that kind of honesty is not easy to find. Animal clinics are usually like mechanics. I followed him here and I took my dog there (drove like 20 miles) just to see him right up until the day he passed. I'm from out of state yet I'm here visiting my boyfriend whom had found a stray kitten a few weeks ago. He's been taking care of her but hasn't had time to make it to the vet. I did my research and came across Sky Lake and figured I'd give it a go. Woke up this morning and decided to call, the receptionist was wonderful and was very pleasant to speak to so early in the morning. She was able to fit me right in and I went in as soon as I hung up the phone. Easy to find, clean location, and nothing but sincere nice people. The doctor, vet techs, and everyone in between were nothing but helpful. Waited for blood work and they kept popping in to see if I had questions or concerns! Very pleased with my experience and am happy to know if there's any emergencies with my fur baby that they will be able to take care of her here in Florida! Read Less

WORST PET HOSPITAL....our little family member ended up dying because of their HORRIBLE AND IRRESPONSIBLE work......if you LOVE YOUR PET.......STAY AWAY FROM THEM. MONEY IS ALL THEY CARE ABOUT.....honestly too long and painful to re-explain, you decide on your little loved one, and have more info than I did, if I would have seen this FROM someone else ours might still be alive. my cat one month before Dr. Cooper at Sky Lakes Animal Hospital got his hands on her was healthy. In the 18 years I had her she had never had an illness nor had she ever needed an operation. Dr. Cooper is arrogant with a huge ego. He has no compassion. He has no clue how to perform procedures or diagnose. He completely missed diagnosed my cat and put her through 3 bouts of unnecessary anthesis! He then released her completely infected and gave me the wrong diagnosis. I knew she wasn't in good shape so I rushed her to another Doctor who tried to save her but unfortunately it was too late. She was unable to recover from the infection & damage Dr.Cooper caused. He did not care about my cat at all! All he cared about was running up the bill. He completely infected my cats mouth and kept disregarding my concerns. Now my cat has passed away and he could care less.All I have received from him is sarcasm & lies! I am extremely impressed with Dr. Cooper and the folks at Sky Lake Animal Hospital. Dr Cooper's diagnostic skills are excellent. He listens, he investigates, he runs the right tests, and he remembers what you've told him. He is a skilled, experienced veterinarian. His decisions regarding which tests and what procedures are for the long haul, and not just to generate additional income. Hands down the best vet I have been to.  I know that is an extreme statement, however, I mean that. I will be loyal to Dr Cooper at Skylake Animal Hospital because of the fact that he helped me out during a horrible accident.  I could tell that he was very upset with me for what I did to my dog. NEVER give you dog baby aspirin when they are in pain.  He didn't judge me, he knew that I was only trying to help her get out of pain, he was just very upset with me and he immediately started to help my dog.  It was a horrible experience, however, I knew my dog, Cookie, was in the best hands because Skylake Animal Hospital really showed that they care about her.That horrible experience is now over, Cookie is back to great health and I am thankful for Dr Cooper and his office for taking such good care of Cookie. Great hospital, very clean . Great stuff, friendly, professional. I brought my baby persian chinchilla kitten for spaying. Everything went fine and she is recovering. The front desk is very helpful and nice, even though Im among those pet owners who gonna be asking questions all the time and calling cause of every little thing. But the Skylake team left me extremely satisfied and thankful. Its not a cheap place. But if you love your pet-you wouldn't look for cheap, that nowadays often meaning not so good veterinary, for your little friend. Dr. Cooper seem very knowledgeable and attentive to animals. From the first visit my kitten felt at ease and welcomed. So I am very happy that we found a great vet office so close to our home in Sunny Isles. Read Less

Really like this place. I went there twice, they really seemed like they cared about my dogs. Took care of us quick because the Vets are excellent! Diagnosed my dogs quickly. I just moved to the area and I was really excited to find a vet close by. I took my chihuahua in for a nail trim to check the office out. Once I got home I noticed my dog's nails were EXTREMELY sharp. I let a few days go by (waiting to see if they were just a little sharp right after the trim which I know can happen) but then on the 5th day after the nail trim, I met with my dog's trainer who said something about my dog needing a trim within 5 minutes of meeting him. I told him I had just been to the vet and he was shocked. The next day I decided to call Sky Lake and ask for them to make a note on my account to fix the nail trim next time I am in. I was put on hold for 5 minutes and then told they would need to call me back. It is now 3 days later and no call back. I am really happy I only tested this office for a nail trim. They are my baby's vet and they are the best!!! Matthew has been amazing since day one!! All the staff are very friendly and professional !!! I got my first puppy almost a month ago and he was very sick, the treated my puppy and they were very kind with me because I was very nervous. If I have questions they always answer me !! Aside from having extensive training in emergency medicine (a huge plus for anyone who's had to make the dreaded run to Hollywood Animal Hospital for an after hours emergency), Sky Lake offers all of the diagnostic, preventative and surgical care for your pet available at some of the larger local animal hospitals, without the hefty prices or impersonal service. The whole staff treats you like family from your very first visit. Dr Cooper is also a very active advocate of animal rescue - often rescuing abandoned or injured animals, nursing them back to health and finding them a great home (often offering discounted vet care for life). I wouldn't trust my dogs to anyone else (not to mention he is the trusted vet for many of the Miami-Dade K9 force). Best vet in Miami. Read Less

Dr Cooper I will begin by telling you that we thought u were a great doctor, but what we experienced on Friday from your staff was unforgivable. I called as an emergency that Something was wrong with Zoe and we were on our way. They asked for my phone number which I provided in the 10 minutes that it took us to get there we find that when we arrive with Zoe in our arms there was only 2 of your girls, who said that you were closed and sent us to ft lauderdale, after us getting upset they said that they had tried to call us of course they did not call the number that I gave them when I called that they asked for but one of the numbers on file - my son who was out of town. After we kept asking for a place that was closer, they finally said that Aventura may have emergency ... But they were not sure, they did not try to call or help us because they did not care. We got in the car and drove to Aventura and they were amazing. Their entire staff must have been trained which is what I suggest you do since they are incompetent and that reflects on you, who I have always found to be caring and professional. I am very angry to date of the treatment we received after all these years. I will never recommend your place and only because your staff is so unprofessional .Read Less

We got a new dog few weeks ago and were looking for good reliable vet in the Aventura area. After reading some Yelp and Google reviews, we came across Sky Lake Animal Hospital. Called in, scheduled an appointment, and came the same day. Ladies up front were very friendly. No wait time, no ton of pets in the front (as we had in another place in Hollywood few years back with our previous dog), just right into the exam room. Goran and Dr. Cooper are very nice. Very friendly, very positive, caring, you can really feel these guys do care about the health of your pet ('baby'). They both treated our new dog very nicely and quickly. Provided information and assured us that if there is anything needed, they're there to help and answer. We loved the fact that Goran told us that not to worry, we can call any time to ask any question we may have. From these notions one can really feel that they don't only treat your pet, but also care about making sure you're fully informed and satisfied. We actually came back to buy some meds there today and we're sure to come back, hopefully only for routine checks. Highly recommended. Read Less

I have a had a veterinary for the past 15 years. I cannot complain about their quaifications, but they were simply rude. So I decided to give this vet a try! It was an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE! The ENTIRE staff is not only pet friendly and caring, but they are also 'human/owner' friendly! They explained what I needed to to do, why, how much would it cost, what could wait, and they responded every question I had. All this while part of the staff was on the floor petting my dog and expalining to HER what they were the doing! For real, if you want a pleasurable, loving, caring, friendly, and professional experience, where one is not charged for the sake of being charged, pay these individuals a visit. My puppy got stuck under a fence where a nail was sticking out and gashed a huge hole in his abdomen. We called Aussie and they said to bring him over right away. They immediately got to work on him and took every precaution possible to make the treatment as gentle and pain free as possible both for the puppy and us. They worked very fast and were very attentive and caring. They talked us all the way through all the procedures and medications. After this incident they have become our preffered vet. They are always available whenever I have needed them. They really care for the animals and the owners. I highly recommend this place. Read Less

We adopted a young rescued dog, brought her home and took her to our local vet, t(he one I hadused for my other dog in North Miam). My new dog was extremely weak and needed quite a bit of medicine to treat many well known issues resulting from being in a shelter. Her health deterierated within 48hrs & I ended up bringing her back to my vet where that clinic thought she may pass away from shock and dehydration.So she was placed on IV, she could not hold down the oral medicine. She was not getting better another 2 days later. We were told about Dr Machado at Aussie and we took her from my vet and drove her in the car 30 miles to his office. Dr Machado realized that she was not only dehydrated and ill...too ill for all the oral meds that were formerly prescribed and she needed a much slower introduction of medication. My dog panicked when put in a crate & he knew immediately that she would not begin to eat, & get better in that confined environment. At Aussie Dr Machado placed her in a quiet place hooked to a removable IV containing antibiotics so she could walk around, she was fed by hand to coax her into eating and within 3 days was a different dog. Here I witnessed simple concepts that are lost on many in the medical field today: Taking the time to know the patient, and undertanding and believing that healing is both medical and emotional.
