My little 7 year old Chihuahua had a run in with bladder stones. After 2 of them got lodged in his urethra on a Sunday morning, Dr. Hampton was able to squeeze him in the next day for an emergency surgery to remove all 18 of them. He had a very long recovery process and Dr. Hampton and her amazing team checked on my fur baby every step of the way. They answered my millions of questions with patience and empathy and I am so grateful for their attention to my dog, who I consider my family member. My regular vet (who is also a personal friend) lives several hours away and usually comes to our house for routine checkups on our animals or to take care of any livestock issues, but she referred me here about a year ago when we needed to spay our older Great Pyrenees. She was extremely impressed with the facility and staff, and I was also. I have since brought in two of my breeding dogs to get radiographs (X-rays) for their OFA certification, and both times it has been a great experience. One of my dogs is timid when we are away from home and he put up quite a fuss when they tried to lead him out of the room, but they handled the situation in a friendly, cheerful manner. Communication is prompt and clear, and it is very easy to make appointments. Pricing is reasonable and the quality of care has been great so far. I'm sure I will be back! I took my pets there while I lived there in Gainesville for 3 years. All the doctors there are so nice and knowledgeable. I have 5 ferrets, a cat and 3 dogs. It's hard to find a good ferret vet, there are four there! What's even greater is the work they do that you don't see. They will treat just about any animal. I brought in an orphaned baby squirrel once and they took her in and took care of her until the wildlife rescue people came and got her. They volunteer their time spaying and neutering ferrel cats at Operation Catnip. And they serve as a rescue of sorts for ferrets and other animals. I adopted two ferrets from them that were homeless. The front desk people are extremely nice and friendly, will bend over backwards to help you. And the vet technicians are very caring and nice. I really miss the doctors and staff at West End since I moved to Virginia a few months ago. I highly recommend West End for your pet's care. Read Less

We had been going here for almost 3 years. A very new vet tech mishandled one of my dogs. He is a 40lb dog. He was a fearful and didnt want to leave the room. She decided to pick him up and carry him out which further upset him as he is not use to being picked up as he is 40lbs. From the exam room I could hear him crying and yelping. When he was returned his face was covered in scratches and was terrified. I was informed that that he had snapped at the tech and had to be restrained and muzzled. This dog has never snapped at anyone nor bitten anyone before or since and I am convinced the tech just did not know what she was doing. They however blamed the dog and continued to insist he be muzzled on visits and refused to allow me to restrain him (not even necessary) during vaccines and exams. ALSO you will wait a ridiculous amount of time here. I would be the only patient and sit in the room for 30 minutes until someone showed up. Read Less

I was willing to make the effort to go to west end because they used to have excellent customer service, compassion, and kindness. This place has changed. The girls at the front desk, especially christina, are experts at COMPLETELY ignoring you....after listening to their gossip about customers, they decided to acknowledge my presence after 10 full minutes. As if i were inconveniencing them, they were rude, disinterested, and short with me. I ultimately ended up leaving without even seeing the vet because after 50 minutes in the waiting room, no one was able to give me an accurate time as to when I'd actually be seen. I don't have to drive 30 minutes out of my way to go to a vet's office with rude support staff that don't care. Petsmart/banfield is 5 minutes away. Read Less

I've been taking my pit bull here for years. The staff is fantastic- friendly, understanding, and most importantly patient with my stubborn boy. When they came across a surgical problem they didn't feel comfortable performing they were able to refer me to another clinic. I take my 3 pets... 2 dogs and 1 cat here. I recommend them to everyone. I personally drive 30 minutes (the next town over) to go to them even though my old vet is less then 2 minute drive away. I mostly have worked with Dr. Stevens but all of the vets there are awesome. Not only are their prices incredible (in my opinion) You get Vets that care and people that remember you. My parents had to put their beloved dog asleep after a fight with cancer. They made a paw print with his name. I can't say enough about this vet. I have been to MANY! I cannot even express how amazing this hospital is. I found out about them through Phoenix Animal Rescue when I adopted my dog, Ariel. Ariel has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, and the vets at West End always make sure that Ariel is getting everything she needs. The vets here are very knowledgable and friendly, and they really just want what's best for you and your animal. The receptionists as well are very friendly and helpful. I absolutely love Dr. Schirmer and Dr. Hampton. Both are great, great vets. I highly recommend them. Also, West End is very affordable which has been very helpful for me. I am a travel nurse working in town temporarily. While here I have needed veterinarian care for both my dogs at separate times. In each case West End Animal Hospital was able to fit my dog in the same day. My first dog's case was pretty straight forward and he received very efficient and effective care. My second dog is much more complicated but the vets and staff were able to focus on his priority issues and he was already showing great improvement by the next day. And-in each case I was expecting a much larger bill, especially since each dog was seen in such a timely manner. I cannot not recommend West End Animal Hospital highly enough! Read Less

So, I have been taking my pups here since I got them Mickey is 2 and Minnie is 1 I took them in for some normal routine check up shots and also to get their teeth cleaned. I've never had a problem before but, this time was the most horrible experience ever. I came to pick up my pups who were both very groggy and was told to remove their bandages an hour after we got home which I did. To my astonishment one of my dogs arms was completely black and blue. Obviously the idiot techs that are just out of school apparently could not find a vein and blew one of his out. poor think cries when I touch it. I also discovered that both my dog nails were cut back so far that they had been bleeding all the way down to the nerve in fact. When I called to confront and ask about it. I got a rude nasty women yelling at me on the phone like I didn't know what I was talking about. I took pictures to prove their idiots. Take your dogs else where this place is bad news. If you have pet rats, Dr. Schirmer is the best vet out there! He has consistently helped my sickly rats back to health, and in the cases where they were too ill to recover, he was extremely sensitive and did his absolute best to make them comfortable. I have brought hard cases to him, and he has been able to help the situation, and help some very sick rats. He has also done two neuter surgeries for my boys, both done exceptionally well-done at a beyond-reasonable price. I live out-of-state, and Dr. Schirmer is still the only vet I will see. This has to be the absolute BEST VETERINARY CLINIC on the planet!  A few weeks ago, two of my cats nearly died from an upper respiratory infection they caught while being boarded for a few days at a different institution.  I brought them in separately to West End, and had the pleasure of meeting their amazing Staff. Michelle, the receptionist, was very friendly, caring, and knowledgeable as to what I should expect from the visit.  Gabbi, the Technician, was absolutely AMAZING.  Best of all, I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Claire Stevens, a Guardian Angel from Heaven!  She was ON POINT with her diagnostics, administered IV to either cats for dehydration, and prescribed an appetite stimulant, followed up with a broad spectrum antibiotic to combat their infection.  She explained every step of the procedures, and told me what worse-case scenario would be if her treatment did not work.  She is extremely knowledgeable, kind, caring, and an EXCELLENT diagnostician! Very rare to meet someone like this on a professional level... believe me, it was refreshing to know that there are still people out there who care more about their work than money. It didn't take but a few days before they started to signs of improvement, and as I am writing this review... one of them has fully recovered, with the other one not far behind!The pricing was extremely reasonable for both visits, and the follow-up phone calls from her office assured me that they REALLY CARE!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place... they are absolutely EXCELLENT! I have an absolute horror story about this place! NEVER take any hooved animals there! I had an unbelievably TERRIBLE experience at West End Animal hospital when I brought my pot-bellied pig there. The vet claimed that they knew pig anatomy (my piggy's hooves on his back foot are growing in a "club" foot pattern and causing him pain). They took my baby Boris into a back room and 6 people held him down while they took a BELT SANDER to his hoof.... they then fed him BACON DOG TREATS to try to calm him down!!!!!!! (I am a life-long vegetarian so this is absolutely deplorable, let alone the fact that they were feeding the flesh of a pig TO A PIG). I found out about the treats because when they brought him back to me, he had orange powder smeared all over his face so I inquired and was told that it was cheese-bacon flavored dog treats they gave him. Another thing, his ear was ripped and bleeding from one of the employee's watch scratching his skin while they held him down. On top of all this, when I took him to another vet after this incident (Dawn Miller, DVM) she showed me where they BROKE Boris's ankle on that foot by holding him down so forcefully. I couldn't believe it! (Boris later had to have a pin surgically implanted into his ankle to heal the joint). I ran into the male vet who was involved (pretty sure it was Fred Schirmer) at Satchel's pizza and when I mentioned to him that the next vet who saw my pig testified that West End literally BROKE my pig's ankle when they saw him, Schirmer literrally SMILED and walked away without saying anything. I was totally SHOCKED at his callous disregard at this information!!! I will never go there again!!!! Total nightmare!!!!!! Read Less

Dr. Shirmer misjudged a kittens' age by 5 weeks. Saying she was 9 weeks instead of 4. He then applied a medication for a kitten of at least 2 lbs or 8 weeks. She weighed 1.4 lbs. She has been lethargic ever since. I have video of how playful she used to be. I called to complain and Iaon the office mgr. turned the tables and used transference tactics to blame me. There was no apology more of an arrogant rant on how they were more knowledgable than I. I rescue cats from high kill shelters. Iaon actually told me I should stop rescuing and educate myself on quarantine protocol. At the end of being lectured for calling about malpractice, Iaon closed the conversation by asking if I was clear on what he thought I should do with my rescue. There are several great veterinary offices in Jonesville this is not one of them. Read Less
