An emergency after-hours animal facility is such a great thing to have, but if the vet / tech on duty is more concerned about receiving payment for their mediocre overpriced services than the well being of an animal ... then ... what the eff?My frenchie had (4) healthy and playful puppies 3 weeks ago. We've been taking them to an amazing vet out in Lakeland for their routine check-ups ( highlandpethospital.net ) Last Saturday, one of the puppies gave us a scare; her breathing became fast & shallow and she wasn't eating. Since the vet in Lakeland had already closed, we drove up to this Animal Emergency Center. We spent a couple good hours with Dr. Wong and a tech who ran some tests, and didn't see anything wrong with the puppy -- normal weight, glucose levels good, doesn't appear to be sick. They gave her a shot to hydrate her and another shot for penicillin (just in case). Yes, they were upfront with their price gouging fees for the shot, and even offered to do an x-ray. (An estimate that could have totaled close to $1,000.) We declined - since she seemed to be okay and walked out paying $250. Really, we just figured she would be okay until our vet opened in the morning. We took to her our vet this morning who ran the same tests, and said some of the same things -- normal weight, glucose levels good. However, she was surprised that the other vet couldn't see that the puppy clearly had a flat-chest. (They call them "swimmers". They're constantly laying / sleeping on their chest; picture how a frog swims). She then proceeded to do an x-ray, and noticed that (bc of her flat chest) the puppy's heart had moved over & was blocking the left lung, causing her to (rapidly & shallowly) only breathe from her right lung. (She is okay now, and we have some "physical therapy" exercises to do to get her chest to puff up like the others.)All of this - the tests, the office visit with friendly and helpful staff, the x-ray, the after-care - costed $105.00. (plus about an hour drive, that is clearly worth it). I'm so saddened & heart broken by this Animal Emergency Center. Sure, they're "after-hours" and have the right to charge a little more for working the "night shift", but it's not like they're 24 hours and working around the clock to save our animal's lives. Unfortunately, in the downtown / east Orlando area they currently have the niche (after-hours) in the market. I'll campaign for any vet, who truly has a passion for animal care & well being, that wants to compete with them in this after-hours market. If you and your pet can hold out until regular vet hours in the area, please do so. Don't go here. Read Less
