I moved to Florida a year ago from North Carolina. I picked Varsity Vet because it has good reviews online and the location is convenient. In the one year I have gone to Dr. Olson, I have spent at least $945.87. To compare, I have spent $887.71 in five years with his North Carolina vet, including when he got neutered. At first I allowed any test Dr. Olson thought appropriate to be run on my dog because I love my dog and want to ensure his health, but there's a fine line between thorough and excessive, and Dr. Olson definitely crosses the line. It wouldn't be such an issue if I walked away with an explanation for what is wrong with my dog and a solution to make him better, but that hasn't happened yet. For example, my dog was having what looked to me as seizures. I brought him in, explained what happened, and all she did was an exam and make record of his eating habits. The next time it happened I took a video of it and sent it to her. She called and said to bring him in immediately. After another $50 exam and writing down his eating habits, she had nothing. The next time it happened I took another video and sent it in again. She said she was going to consult a neurologist and get back with us. She never got back with us. Luckily my dog hasn't had an episode for a while, but she couldn't tell me what was wrong nor give me anything to help him. After the latest $300+ bill for numerous tests (wanting to test for pancreas issues for the third time in a year) because she didn't know what was wrong with my dog (aside from blaming it on a toy he was chewing on, thinking he had blockage. We later found out, after taking him to Affiliated Veterinary Specialists, he was having back issues again), I finally said enough was enough. Her response was she didn't want to risk losing her license. While I completely understand that and know she has to make a living as well, she doesn't take people into consideration. She was well aware that we just spent over $5,000 on back surgery for my dog. Instead of taking an educated guess (as a trained, licensed professional) and going with the odds and trying to solve that problem, she decided to give me a print out of a bunch of tests she wanted to run on my dog, estimating that it could cost between $350-$550. Aside from all of that, I do not like the way she talks to me or my husband. Her bedside manner is terrible and she is very condescending. When we brought him in last time, she made us feel like bad dog owners because he ate part of a squeeker. She does not do a good job at explaining her thoughts- what could possibly be wrong, what steps to take, what his symptoms are reminding her of, what she has seen in other dogs, or anything. Every time we have brought our dog in for not acting "normal," after waiting 20+ minutes after arriving at our scheduled time, she will give him an exam, ask what he has eaten, write down the days of the week of when he ate or was fussy about eating, and then say she wants to run some tests. It happens every time. When I go to the doctor whenever something isn't right, the doctor explains to me the possible things that could be wrong. Then, he will tell me based on his knowledge and experiences what he thinks it is, and then he will treat me for that. He doesn't just take my blood and run a bunch of tests that will cost me hundreds of dollars. I take my dog to the vet because she is the one who is educated and trained and experienced, so I would like to trust what she thinks is wrong. Instead, she is so paranoid at giving any kind of diagnosis without charging hundreds of dollars for tests. Also, I do not care for the facility. It looks dated and not very thoroughly clean. At first I didn't really notice how bad it was because I don't go to a bunch of vets to compare, but after going to AVS and Happy Paws (the pet resort we take him to when we're out of town) and seeing how clean and nice those places were, it really makes Varsity Vet look pitiful. One of the times he wasn't feeling well, she wanted him to stay for a few hours so he could get some liquids and be observed, he came back with fleas. Needless to say, I will be looking for a new vet. Read Less
