I would give this clinic 5 stars just in the fact that they are there! Twice now I needed an emergency vet service for my cats, who had an injury or sickness after normal office hours. It was a comfort knowing the cats did not have to suffer until the next day. Aside from that, the staff and doctors were compassionate, understanding people. They seemed to truly care about our furry family member. Read Less

We brought our dog in on 9/4/18 after he dislocated his hip while on a walk, it was a traumatic experience for us and our dog was screaming in pain. We rushed him to the closest after hours vet, we were brought back immediately and the entire staff was compassionate and professional. Dr. Scarpino was wonderful and was able to successfully get Franklin's hip back into the socket and applied a sling to allow it to heal. We brought our dog to a orthopedic surgeon for a follow up a week later and Franklin is healing well, the surgeon said the ER doctor did a phenomenal job with the sling and said we avoided a costly surgery. Thank you Dr. Scarpino and the entire staff, you calmed our nerves and did an amazing job with our beloved Franklin. It is a relief knowing  that this amazing facility is only 10 minutes away from me. Read Less

My experiences here (three separate visits) have all been vastly different. I have had fantastic office staff with a vet with no compassion, I’ve had a great experience with all staff, and I have had an experience with the doc being wonderful and the staff being extremely rude. My last experience was terrible. I brought my dog in with a torn and profusely bleeding ear. The receptionist asked me what happened. I said he was at the dog park. She asked if it was a fight. I said no. She rolled her eyes at me like I was lying to her. They seemed unprepared for a scared, bleeding dog. They wanted to start an IV on my dog that was scared and agitated. Then they smartly decided to give him a shot to calm down. While they gave the shot time to kick in, they left me, alone, in a room with a bleeding dog. After they took my dog back for surgery to repair his ear, they left me in the exam room covered in blood. There are no paper towels or sinks in their exam room. Customer beware. You never know who you will get there and there is no consistency. Be prepared for AT LEAST a $500 bill. Read Less

I would NEVER suggest taking your pet here if you're looking for care, compassion, professionalism and cleanliness. Extremely disappointed in the treatment of my pup, Eva. I took Eva here on Sunday, 6/17 for a bee sting. The Vet & tech that night were nice and attentive. The stinger was removed and thankfully, Eva showed no signs of distress. The Vet & Tech administered a few shots to Eva of steroids, Benadryl, etc and we were on our way. Saturday, 6/23 Eva had bloody diarrhea & against my better judgement of going to TBVS or Blue Pearl we went back to this location. This experience was horrific! We walked in and I saw the tech from Sunday, she said oh you're back & I said unfortunately. They asked me to fill out more paperwork and I explained I'd just been there 6 days prior. I still had to fill out the paperwork & then we were brought into a room. Eva had drool dripping out of her mouth which is not normal for her & was panting, seemingly from pain from bloody diarrhea. The Vet came in, didn't examine Eva and started suggesting she stay overnight. I said I'd rather have some tests done before leaving her. Blood was drawn & they didn't test any organ function, only limited panels. After an hour or so of waiting, Eva was laying on the floor tremoring and then threw up. I opened the back door and asked for help as she'd thrown up and there was nothing to clean it up. The Vet came in & stood there not consoling Eva or acting like she remotely cared. The vomit at this point was seeping throughout the room & the Vet was insistent on Eva staying and then started saying she may have an undiagnosed disease causing this. (Eva is an otherwise healthy, happy pup.) I asked if this could be a result of the injections administered on Sunday. The Vet looked at me with a bewildered expression and asked what I was talking about & then said I should've reiterated that Eva  was there 6 days prior. I said, it's in your paperwork, computers and your techs working recognized her. (Side note, with this visit they didn't weigh her properly which put her 10 pounds less than her actual weight. Thankfully, we caught it and said it was wrong. The Tech reweighed her and got the right weight.) After this my faith was entirely lost and I paid for the horrific experience just to get out of there and get to Blue Pearl. My point in sharing all of this, is that pets for many of us are considered our family. I would NEVER allow my pets to be treated here nor would I trust them. The experience from the welcoming, to the wrong weight, to the wait for a pup that was in pain, to a guesstimate diagnosis and then vomit left on the floor was enough for me. Save yourself and your Pet the angst and go to Blue Pearl or TBVS. It may be a little extra in cost but worth every penny spent. Read Less

DANGEROUS MISDIAGNOSIS!!!! PLEASE READ FIRST!!!!! First off let me explain my Experience here the BAD'S, and the GOOD'S. Thursday night May 3, 2010 about about 9pm I rushed my Min-Pin because she was not acting her usual normal happy self. Having no expectations or knowledge other than my friend who was a vet tech guiding me in via text. We arrived to a very slow and dreary environment. Once we were taken back to the exam room which was fairly quick it was discovered by the tech that my dog had a 106 degree temp. She acted quickly and took my dog to the back and started cooling her down. Having no experience in this I really didn’t know what this meant. Later about 20 minutes the Tech came in and said that the Dr would be writing up an estimate. Once she returned with the estimate we were shocked at how expensive it was going to be, keep in mind NOTHING had been explained to us. After reviewing the cost I asked to speak to the Dr. (I shouldn't have had to ask to see the Dr.) The Dr. Came in and she was very cold. She had the attitude like she was being questioned, rather than having the bed side manner to understand we were concerned dog parents. She explained to me for the FIRST time that my dog was not going to make it though to the morning and she would eventually die. This was explained to us after the estimate as if we were here to get an oil change done to our car. When I started to question her about her opinion 20 minutes into my visit about my dog not making it she became very cold and obviously didn’t have any clue on how to talk to grieving parents who are not willing to let their child to go out without a fight. My next line of questioning was if she is going to pass anyway why are we spending over 1000 dollars on a vet bill. Her response was if we find out some more information on the blood test than we could put her down quicker rather than later. I then asked her for some time alone to think about our next steps. After crying and grieving with our 11 year old son, and our 12 year old Min-pin we decided that she deserved for us to fight until the end! So my next move was to locate the tech and let her know that we were going to move forward with the treatment. This is where the GOOD happened. As I approached the (lady at the front desk) she was heartless and rude telling me I would have to wait and to get back into the waiting room! This is where I began to think in my head “Do I really trust these rude individuals with my child”, and further more did I really want to give them my hard earned money and be treated with such TERRIBLE customer service? It took me about 10 seconds to understand my thoughts and I left immediately! Long story short I took my dog immediately to EMERGENCY CARE CENTER in Largo, and it was night and day! Having come from a hospital background this is how a place is supposed to look and feel. They took care of my dog, she had emergency surgery the next day and a week later my dog is back to her normal self! This was the worst experience of my life to be honest. But all I can think about is WHAT if this place would have treated me with respect and had good bed side manner? My dog would have been misdiagnosed and she would be DEAD Today! Shame on this place and shame on this staff! Remember one thing! There is always someone less fatigued and has less of a chip on their shoulder with more compassion for LIFE just waiting for an opportunity to help someone GREIVING and to save a life! We need people who are willing to FIGHT for good, and not have a chip on their shoulder instead! PLEASE WHOMEVER READS THIS DO ME ONE FAVOR!!! Get a SECOND opinion!! It saved my Girls life!!!! Do not take your animals here I took my two dogs here last night due to an emergency both were very sick salivating extremely the vet was rude, did not listen to me when i said my beagle becomes aggressive if I do not hold him even had the nerve to tell me to quit rubbing my dogs head (I was not in their way nor was I making the situation worse) or he would stop the exam...like I was wasting his time. The second I stopped touching my dogs head my dog became aggressive because he was scared and to which the nurse put my beagle in a firm chokehold while hes already struggling to swallow his own spit and whom is traumatized because of abuse from a previous owner *which I said 6 different times* and he was screeching because of how scared he was. I told the vet I was disgusted with the unnecessary chokehold on my animal which could have been avoided had he listened to me. I then asked how much would it be for an anti nausea medication he stated I'll run some estimates, I asked for anything over the counter I could supply my animals he refused to answer. I yelled at the vet stating it was evident he cared only about money, not my animals (he made this clear by his demeanor and intentional vagueness) and told him my dogs are not just another number, they are my kids. I left and refused any further treatment. On my way out there was a gentleman in the parking lot whom brought a cat inside with his daughter, the vet kept telling the man and his daughter the cat was going to die without any thorough exam. DO NOT TAKE YOUR FURKIDS HERE I'm only going to blue pearl from now on . Oh btw I called blue pearl whom said to give the dogs pepcid..guess what? They're totally fine today no thanks to that jerk Dr. Lura whom I use that term loosely. I'm premed as well which I conveyed to the vet meaning I checked my dogs vitals, made sure his eyes were dilating, checked his gums all of it..the doctor clearly knew I wasn't going to be "had" with his bullsh*t money tactic. Went to this clinic on 4/25/18 when our dog was behaving strange all of the sudden. Dr Kevin Lura examined the dog & could not determine anything wrong, & just gave him a painkiller shot & on our way. Was not impressed with the lack of care given. I'm not sure he was even paying attention to our responses to his questions regarding symptoms, as he repeated exact questions 2-3 times. Scheduled an appointment with another vet the next morning, & they were immediately able to diagnose our dog with a neck sprain. All that was needed was to slightly lift the dogs head to figure this out. I imagine a proper physical examination would have given this result. I just wish we could have figured this out during our visit here, instead of wasting over $140 for a visit. Will look elsewhere, should there be another emergency. Read Less

Awful experience and vile terrible staff!Brought a dog here tonight after almost hitting him and asked to see if he had a microchip and the lady refused to scan him and instead gave me a paper to fill out to release the dog to them. When I asked why she couldn't just scan him she responded with, "we have better chances of finding the owner than you". She kept saying the same thing over and over again and I was trying to be polite wondering what was so hard just to make sure he had an owner before I condemned him to the pound and was only meet with rude short answers. Luckily another lady who also brought in a dog she almost hit realized what was going on called out the rude front desk lady and said you mean to tell me that you can't scan this dog to see if he has an owner and the lady goes "fine" and picks up the scanner on the adjacent desk and came out and scanned the dog then said he has a chip and then grabbed the leash and rudely snatched the dog from me took him to the back! At that point, she got a vet because I was like how do I know that she's not just lying to me so I leave? And the vet came out and explained to me how the procedure worked and I said well can I just take the dog until you find the owner and she said no you would have to contact the local pound and adopt him out. So wait I have to adopt the dog of which I brought you guys and have to pay to get him out of the euthanizing pound whenever I can take him with me!? Ok, messed up much? Might I also add the lady who stood up for me just had her stray dog she brought in scanned and ID without any problem! Don't worry though I'll make it a point to follow up on that brindle Pitbull and if I find out that one hair is harmed on his adorable little head or he was put down, I will report this to every local news agency and won't stop until I have this place fined or shut down. Very skilled staff, I brought in my cat just about dying, she wouldn't even lift her head. They stabilized her condition in 2 hours. Unfortunately we didn't continue with exams to find out what was wrong with her, due to the fees they charge which are considerably high. However they were very transparent of how much would cost each procedure and kindly allowed us to make the decision. We decided to take her home and to another Pet hospital for exams and treatment, but my cat Fiona would not have made through the night if wasn't for this clinic. I have already written a detailed review of my experience here, which was pathetic. I want to make clear my review was not biased based on the emotional pain I am experiencing. As well as the nerve the staff had to call me back (I left a voicemail explaining the outcome of their 'professional advice') to argue the lack of fault on their end. I am not saying I am innocent in the matter, nothing plagues me more than guilt Merlins passing. Even though there was nothing more I could've done... irregardless the same nurse who saw Merlin called me back to argue that Merlin DID see a doctor. My mother and I were specifically told that he would be seeing a technician, that we would be avoiding the doctor in order to avoid the examination fee. "I wish you would've called us sooner." She said. She told us in the office he was comfortable and that he had a chance with us, so long as we obtained antibiotics. Which we were doing well before even 12 hours- before even the night ended in fact. We were also told he was administered antibiotics and fluids, therefore he was in the process of treatment upon leaving AEC for this 'easily fixed issue' This establishment can no more take responsibility for their mistreatment as they could admit their lack of desire to help us due to our financial situation. The nurse herself told us she doesn't have cats! How would that comfort ANYONE with a feline in pain? How would that help make ANYONE confident in the care provided by your hands? I am traumatized, having to watch my 2 year old baby boy lay on his side and die. Take his last breath. His eyes go blank, his chest stop moving. "I wish you would've called us sooner" I just left a couple hours ago with the assurance he at least had 24 hours of COMFORT. Not one thing was said about the possibility of death. My response to you is, I wish you weren't money hungry. I wish your job title was your passion and not just your paycheck. I am not alone in this experience.Read Less

Took my dog into the clinic at 10:30 pm. He was lathargic and could not stand up. They took temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, mm /crt, attutude, body condition and xray. After 4 hours and $603.00 it was determined that my dog had slight heart mummer, his digestive was distended firm, his musculoskeletal was a bit off ( but not the issue) . Their assessment was Lameness (couldn't stand (KEPT falling over) and heart mummer. The xray was to take up to an hour to read. It took over 2 hours. My dog received pain med and a muscle relaxer. Both shots and some fluid. We went on our way. If they had taken a stool sample, they would have known the problem. Took my dog to my vet the next day. The reason he couldn't stand up was because of pain in his abdomen. ER clinical noticed gas in colon, but did not do a stool sample. My vet infored me that when there is pain in a dog''s stomach, it can radiate to his back. That is why he couldn't stand up. We spent $603.00 and left there not really knowing the real problem. Found out from my vet that my dog has a bacterial infection. My vet took stool sample is how vet knew. Terrible experience. We only think it right to get our money back or at least part of it Terrible experience and a group that let me take my dog home that could not stand up. Sometime things just irk ya. So we take Daisy to the St Pete Emergency Vet last night. As I call, the nurse warms me that it is $100 office visit. OK, understood. Then when we get there, they calmly said, there is a $300 upfront cost and we swipe the card. OK, now both Sandy and I have been familiar with prepayments, such as car rentals, or boat rentals etc, where they ask for a prepayment. Again, not a concern. Then as we check out less than an hour later, and a few test done, there is yet another bill presented for $160 and we swipe the card again. Thinking, ok, they void the $300 swipe and use the $160. We feel that seemed fair. The nurse folds up the invoice and hands it to me as we leave. Today I open the invoice in the car and see the total invoice of $460. Really! Just a pathetic way of doing emergency business, when you are least aware.Read Less

Really amazing staff & doctor. We had to take our pet in over a weekend to be put down. We elected to stay with our dog during the procedure, and the staff was very calming. They walked us through everything they were doing as it was happening, allowed us some time with our dog to say our goodbyes, and even gave us a small paw-print cast to take home with us. About a week after, we even got a nice hand-written card from the entire staff. I was nervous to go here after reading some of these reviews, but I'm very glad we did when our pet was in pain. They didn't know us at all and still treated us as if we had been going there for years. As with anywhere, make sure you're asking the right questions before going in. They are running a business and do have to charge for various things. But as long as you ask they are happy to make sure you understand what your options are. Read Less

They are very caring and thorough. Our dog dislocated her hip and they were able to relieve her pain and relocate her hip. Unfortunately, less then 24 hours later she popped it out again, when we took her back the tech took the time to call our regular vet and see if they could get her in first thing in the morning for surgery. Because of her kindness in doing this we saved a lot of money. Hopefully we never have this kind of emergency again but if we do we definitely know where to take our animals. Read Less

He was diagnosed with a bladder infection and sent us home with medications and many useful suggestions of things for me to do at home to make him more comfortable.  They even called the next day and Sunday to check on his status.  I could not be happier with the treatment he received.  So happy this place is close to home. I brought my 17 year old Tonkinese cat in because I knew she was dying and crying in pain. She had a few seizures so I thought it was neurological. The woman on the phone was kind and informed me it would be $90 to have her seen. I agreed to the fee because I was there once before with a few very kind vets to put my boyfriends rottweiler to sleep. So thinking my poor old cat and I were in good hands my roommate drove us there to see what the vet would say and if there was any possible way to help her or worst case scenario put her down. I brought my little old lady in and the vets assistant saw us right away, we spoke of her age and previous medical history. Another woman came in and was very sweet about possibly putting her down and said the vet would see her soon. Then the worst possible thing happened. A woman by the name of JAMIE SHARPINO came in to do tests on my cat. Hardly looked at her and for comfortably putting her down at the lovely price of over $700 and when I told her I would have to go elsewhere because I couldn't afford it she told me I was "cruel in her opinion" and "what I was doing to my cat was sick" and how I was "horrible for letting her suffer". Save yourself the money pet owners, save yourself the stress and pain of bringing your pet here until this disgusting human being is removed from this place. I cannot believe they would even allow someone like that to handle sensitive subjects like the death of a pet. That woman clearly saw me red in the face crying and had the nerve to tell me how I was a terrible person for wanting to take her somewhere else and make my old lady comfortable. Take your pet to the SPCA. It's free of charge but you'll have to pick up your pet later at the facility. They also do cremations (At least at the Largo facility they do) but there is a small fee. They were very kind about the whole situation. Never settle for a disrespectful let down in this field like Jamie Sharpino. I hope this seriously helps those of you suffering with your pets. On Oct 15 my Mastiff Quinlan was showing signs of bloat ( we were on vacation for NY)Knowing this was life threatening he was at the hospital within 20 mins of showing signsMy sister had called while we were driving there. The tech took him right in the back and about 10 min later Dr Jamie Scarpino came in to talk to me, she said he was nice and pink and stomach didnt have the hollow sound bloat does but she could feel his spleen was huge indicating he may have a mass. I said no way its bloat it come on quickly out of no where this wasnt something that gradually happened. She then said she take xrays and say it was bloat.I sign consent to do Lavage and straighten stomach out and perform pyloropexy so it wouldnt happen again.Upon picking him up at 715 Dr Scarpino who was dressed and in a hurry as she told us she had a 730 meeting , informed me she had not done the pyloropexy. She promptly left and was out of the parking lot before we got Quin safely into the car ( He weighs 220)They sent us to Pinellas animal hospital to be monitored for the day ( a vet owns both hospitals) After being told at 1 I could pick Quin up at 545 to take home, at 510 Dr Walen called and said she wanted Quin to go to a 24 hour specialty hospital Tampa Bay Vet SpecialtyI was there with in minutes and Quin was bought out on a gurney and put into my vehicle The tech and staff were awesome but Dr Wallen didnt state my dog was critical and was in a life threatening stateWe arrived at Tampa Specialty Vet and they took Quin in the back and worked on him his heart rate was above 200 and stomach was filled with gas again. Dr Painter took amazing care of him and saved him. SHe had to sedate again and do a lavage to release gas.He was in ICU over the weekend and had to have a second surgery to do what Dr Scarpino was suppose to do on the 15 th.My poor 8 year old dog had to endure a second invasive surgery because of her.He had to stay till Wed before I could take him home he didnt start to eat till Thur night and is in a great deal of pain.Dr Scarpino had a dog come in with Bloat with all organs in good shape because I saw it as soon as it was happening. She failed to follow SOP for bloat and my dog suffered because of it. Not to mention the 3,000 surgery is now over 10,000. The surgeon who performed the second surgery called to speak to her and she never returned his call.To not follow simple SOP and then rush out of the hospital then never check on a patient or call another vet ? It is great there is an animal hospital that is open all the hours regular vets aren't. Every night all night and then weekends from Friday night until Monday morning. They send a report to your pets regular vet to keep everyone fully informed. A really professional touch. It is reasonable to expect to pay a bit more for service outside normal business hours. But I don't think they are charging all that much extra. Charges seem about the same as at a regular hours vet in a well-off neighborhood. They seem capable of handling about anything. One time I was there they were preparing for surgery on a severely injured dog. The dog was hurt so bad he was a carry in.I have visited this Vet twice. The first time my cat got some cuts in a fight (NO other animal was allowed on HER porch) which they handled quickly and efficiently. The second time was at the beginning of what turned out to be her life ending illness although that could not have been known at the time.Big thing is my cat liked the people at this vet. I think she had good judgment. Read Less

This clinic is there when you need it... as in on a Sunday when your normal vet is closed. This is the only reason I'd go here again. While the staff were helpful and friendly, my two star rating is really due to Dr. Antz-Hanson, and what I thought was very poor attention to both animal and owner.I had to take my new dog to the ER on a Sunday, after she wasn't eating, drinking, or relieving herself. Dr. Antz-Hanson didn't greet or seem to have any regard for my dog in the exam room. She spent about three minutes discussing and examining my dog, and then told me she would print a list of tests they could run and how much they would cost. If it's already $90 to walk in the door, I would at the very least expect some sort of informed opinion, not just a grocery list of things I can pay for. She didn't exhibit any empathy or compassion, and I honestly walked out of there questioning if she even likes animals. Read Less

They made a very difficult decision a little less so by showing our little dog respect and sympathy. On 07/12/14 my 13 LB puppy got into a human medication that was a toxic to the dog, I discovered this at 4 a.m., she was listless, barely responsive & I truly feared without immediate intervention she would die. I took her to the Animal Emergency Clinic of St Petersburg in sheer panic. The staff, Beth (the technician) & Dr. Jaxtheimer were wonderful. The care provided was exceptional, the compassion was beyond what one would expect at 4:30 a.m. The cost was reasonable and well worth all they did to help us, the staff was awesome & my puppy lived thanks to Beth & Dr. Jaxtheimer taking the pup back as soon as I walked thru the door, treatment was immediate and life saving. Staff kept me informed at every turn. My vet was aware of the situation when I called their office at 8 am to report our mishap. I could not ask for anything more. I must add I was hesitant to return to this center, not because of the facility or staff but because 2 yrs ago my 14 y.o. Min Pin needed to be euthanized on a Saturday night, she could not wait for my vet to open on Monday. For one year I avoided 22nd AV N so I didn't have to see the building.... that night we presented in tears, anxious, terrified and heartbroken. The staff that night did all they could to make us all comfortable and let me hold my little girl in my arms until she crossed that Rainbow Bridge... Horrible experience... Dr. Judith Jaxtheimer has absolutely zero bedside manner.  We took our 14 year old dog there in severe pain in the middle of the night.  She basically asked us what we wanted to do with him without offering any sound medical advice.  "I can give him some pain killers or I can put him down.  Whatever you want." - or something to that effect.  She also didn't want to "step on the toes of our primary vet", so she said - therefore didn't want to give too much advice - at least that was her excuse for her apparent lack of ability.  If our primary vet were open, that's where we would have been, but it was midnight and our vet recommends this place, probably not because they are any good, but because they're just about the only thing open late at night within any reasonable driving distance.  We ultimately had her inject our poor old dog with some pain killers and took him to our own vet the next day.  Our vet gave good advice and started him on prednizone pills -- and the old guy is like a new dog again - no thanks to Dr. Jaxtheimer. If we ever need an emergency vet again, we will hope some other place is open and if we have to return here, we certainly hope to get a different doctor!! Just left the clinic an hour ago which would be 9:30a.m. on 5-13. Took my 10+yr. old cat in because he quit eating 3 days ago, and he was throwing up. Tried to syringe feed him on Sat at 5:15 with baby food but threw that up along with the water. I knew if I had waited til Mon. to take him to my vet he would had been much worse off. I had walked into the clinic at 8:30, was immediately greeted and put into a room within 15 minutes. I filled out paper work and after the tech came back and took my papers the doctor came in maybe 20 minutes later. Dr. Demirjian was very sweet, she checked at Pooh(my cat) an tried to assess his situation w/o doing blood work at that moment. She explained 2 options which was the blood work with the total work up. Or to give him fluids for his dehydration and injections to settle his stomach. I decided to go with option #2 since I will be seeing my vet early a.m. tomorrow. I feel for the time and the money I had spent along with the prompt service from the time I walked in and until I left it was worth the $216.00 that I really didn't have, but I would do anything.......anything for my 3 cats and 15yr. old dog because they are the children I never had. And I know they'd do the same if I was in their position......So, thank you Animal Emergency, the staff, and the doctor for making my cat more comfortable and for making me feel at more ease so I can go ahead and enjoy my Mother's Day........Sincerely, Rebecca Cregar Read Less

Unfortunately we didn't continue with exams to find out what was wrong with her, due to the fees they charge which are considerably high.

Read Less
