Gateway has been my vet choice since 1972. If I didn't feel they were compassionate and competent, I would have been gone years ago. Plenty of employees, but no one in charge. owner is hardly ever there, and the staff is clueless! Refused to refill a necessary medication for my Chihuahua used to prevent seizures (difficult to get him to the vet as he is....well, crazy!). They said he needed to have a physical every year for blood work. When I informed them that we had just been in for a full physical, they seem confused. Then they said his blood was only drawn for heartworms, and not for phenobarbital levels. I said, well when I go see my doctor once a year, I do not tell them what lab tests to do... they just do it! I am not the doctor...I am the patient. They said I needed to specifically ask for that test....wait, what? So, finally, I succeeded in getting through to the person on the phone who put me on hold, went to speak with the doctor, and she said there would be no charge for another test since it was their error in not doing that particular test during his physical. I had to bring my pet back for more blood work (it's VERY difficult to get my dog in the car, much less to the vet), which meant taking more time off work. When we were finished, they told me it would be $100. While in the waiting room, spoke to several other pet owners who said the staff is never the same, and they never know what is going on. Long story shortened, doctor was supposed to call, never did because he is never there. Office manager was rude and insisted that the test needs to be done once a year. That is NOT the point...I know that! Point is, they need to run all the tests necessary during the physical, not make you come back because of their error, then charge you again! The turn-over in employees is very high, they are very disorganized, the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. The staff is often rude, and always clueless. Was at Haines Rd prior to this place. They were good, but prices excessive. Our particular medication costs the physician about $1.00 per refill, they were charging me close to $50. Gateway prices are fair, but office is so poorly run, we will need to change again. Would love to just find a good vet with fair prices. My boyfriend is a doctor...and agrees with everything here. BEWARE!!! HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT ever use Gateway Animal Hospital, St. Petersburg, Florida. SORRY I EVER WENT THERE!!! They have no clue what they're doing! I have been dealing with vets for over 30 years and this one is  horrible!  The staff is completely incompetent including Debbie at the front at the front desk.  I was looking for a new vet for my cats and  took my 2 cats there in August, 2016 for their annual vaccinations for the first time and 20 days later my female cat passed away. I had an appointment yesterday 5/8/17 to take my male to pick up pain meds for him because he was diagnosed with cancer 2 days ago at Blue Pearl ER vet., I called before my appointment to let them know that he had cancer and do I need to bring him just to pick up the meds, they said no. I called back a second time just to make sure and again they said no I do not have to bring him to get a refill on his meds. When I showed up yesterday they told me that I needed to bring my cat! I was so FURIOUS that they wasted my time.   Debbie couldn't even get my name right, she kept calling me some elses name the entire time!!!  I made an appointment for today. Had to wait 1hour and 15 minutes pass my appointment time. The vet,  Dr Blanchard said I did not need to bring my cat and in at all I needed to do was pick up the pain medicines because they had the hospital records from over the weekend from BluePearl (a fantastic ER  vet hospital).  I told him how I had came yesterday and was given the runaround and he told me that the staff up front was incompetent and do not know what they are doing, he was disgusted by the way I was treated. Debbie attempted to charge me for another ladie's visit and vaccinations for her cat!!! I had to argue with her  about wanting to charge me for some else's pet!!!, The Dr.'s tech forgot 1 of the medicines, thankfully I looked in the bag to see it was not there. If I had to go back tomorrow to pick up the meds she forgot it would not have been pretty! Debbie got off easy today with me going off on her!!!   The thing that makes me really so FURIOUS is that my cat who has cancer never had to leave the house today poor thing, that just added stress to him not feeling well already. SMH! Their employee turnover is very high, thats why they always a "now  hiring" sign out!   Also maybe why their prices are so cheap! I'm also afraid now to give my cat the meds they gave me, going to check with Blue Pearl to see if the med is correct and safe to administer.   **I do however highly recommend North Northwest Veterinary Clinic, St. Petersburg, FL, Dr. Shepperd, that's where I've been taking my service dog for the last 9 years.They are highly experienced and very professional, as well as Blue Pearl Vet for Emergencies, as they are expensive because they are an emergency vet, but well worth it God forbid your animal is in crisis over the weekend or after hours and you can not to your normal vet. Both Northwest Veterinary Clinic and BluePearl have always been professional,  courteous  and empathetic.  BluePearl took outstanding care of my cat who passed away after Gateway Animal Hospital administered them her annual vaccination Aug.2016. BP are taking care of my other cat who now has cancer and also my service dog. My service dog was allowed to have a free opthamologist visit in Tampa for annual service dog  checkup for service dogs that have been formally trained through a service dog school, this free service is not available for people who personally train their service dogs.  Unfortunately they found out that my service dog now has an eye disease called Pannus,  thankfully they caught it in time, hopefully with the management of  steroid eye drops and another eye drops she will be able to continue working successfully for me until she's ready to be retired.  Thank you BluePearl and thank you Northwest Veterinary Clinic for your outstanding service** Read Less

The immediate impression when walking in is a Professional - yet welcoming and friendly- practice. The waiting room is ample is space, as well as fun little books and magazines. When brought into one of the smaller, personal rooms, the staff were friendly, and there was only a very short wait before being seen by the Vet. He was professional, amicable, and altogether nice. I would give this place zero stars if I could, that being there is only 1. I called this place due to my cat open mouth breathing, drooling, eye rolling, and no eating/drinking. I explained to the girl who answered what was going on (who seemed to not know a damn thing) I requested to speak with a doctor, she eventually told me that all were busy and that she would take my name, number, and notes to have a doctor call me back. That was Monday, today is Wednesday- still no call back. Thankfully I had a gut feeling that I would not get a call back and ended up somewhere else called ParkView Animal Hospital, which is an amazing place btw!! My cat ended up needing to see a cardiologist and needed oxygen immediately. If I had waited for a call back from this terrible business who knows what would have happened to my poor baby cat! Thomas goes in every two months for a nail trim and once a year for his annual and vaccinations. That's a lot of visits in the past five years! Dr. Blanchard has taken exceptional care of our senior dog, Samantha. He researched all medications she could take for her many problems. He really knows his stuff. When my dog was attacked at a dog park, her leg ripped apart, I called there to let them know we were on our way in. When we got there, the techs were outside waiting for us with a stretcher. Where else would you find that? They are special. We found Gateway because we recscued our English Springer from ESRA and this is where they took her. I have been going to Gateway for about 20 years. They used to be outstanding. For the last several years the front end employees are horrible. They do not care or understand life treating issues with animals.  A few years ago I had a cat that was having a hard time breathing. It was lunch time, I call to let them know I was bringing in the cat and be prepared for the emergency. They told me all the Dr's were at lunch and to go to the emergency vet or find a vet that had Dr's available. This cat had been going there all of its 18yrs of life.  Then just today I had a cat that had an urinary tract blockage and had been at Blue Pearl. They told me to follow up with my vet if he did not eat or drink. After 24 hrs the cat was not eating or drinking. I called at 5:30pm to see if barney could be seen because they were open until 7pm. The girl at the front desk said that no Dr's were there and I could bring barney in the next  morning at 9am and they would see if they could for him in.  This is a life threatening issue for cats and I had to bring barney back to Blue Pearl for more IV and meds. I am done with Gateway. Dr Blanchard is great and so is Michele but the rest of the idiots at the front desk are horrible. Read Less

Very upset with Dr. Blanchard for not checking on my cat Shadow 's mouth, the reason I brought her in. All he did was prescribed pills & blood tests. It's $$$. Took her to the Cat Hospital of Tampa Bay and found out she had a big tumor effecting the whole right side of her face & throat, plus 2 ingrown toenails. She used to be 7 lbs. and was down to 4 lbs. I had to let her go to the Rainbow Bridge. They were so caring there. I would NOT recommend Gateway animal hospital to anyone. My dogs skin problem is still ongoing (pills,pills,pills)! Wouldnt recommend this place to my worst enemy!! All they did was over charge and nickle and dime me at every oppertunity. The owner was rude and said i was a "Bandaide" parent. I have spent thousands of dollars to help my dogs , and would feed my animals before myself. I recently changed vets FINALLY, and found out that why i was being called a bandaide parent is bc the vet was giving bandaide solutions to continue the follow up appointments. Gateway never once looked in my dogs mouth to see why she had bad breath, i simply thought it was a breed thing. Come to find out my dogs mouth now needs 800 worth of dental work. I can take responsibility for NOT KNOWING and being uneducated in the veterinary field..but isnt that why we pay for office visits and we pay for the vet to take care and have preventative care? After having my dogs with this place for over 3 years NOT once did they look in her mouth. I am disgusted and feel extreamly ripped off.. Beware.. Or if you are going to bring an animal to this place you might want to go to vet school so u can know what to ask.Read Less

We have been going to Gateway Animal Hospital now for over 10 years. We have enjoyed the relationships we have developed with Michelle, Louren & Janet just to name a few and the others that have been there as long as we have. The outside surgeons and their staff are the best too. The staff and Vets are very helpful, knowledge and friendly every time we are there. I had a terrible experience too many times and Gateway, you have forever lost my business. I will no longer trust you with my animal after witnessing your irresponsible and incapable staff. It is not my business to drone on about a situation or bring up old experiences - what's done is done. But for thone reading this review, if you care for your animal I truly implore that you take him/her somewhere else...anywhere else ... I gave the business several chances, even had the vet pay me out of his pocket, they just don't know what the hell they are doing and I am not stupud enough not to notice their lax and overall bad service. I'm a new puppy owner and decided on Gateway after reading mostly positive reviews and the the close proximity to my house. Total mistake... Staff was unfriendly, not helpful or knowledgeable. They mismanaged my dogs appointment to be neutered, which I took the day off work for. The best I could say about this office is there is one, one vet assistant that is friendly and actually seems to enjoy her job. The rest are miserable (vets included). I wouldn't trust them to dog sit, let alone manage the health of my dog.Read Less

Thanks to there ineptitude, the 6 month old toy poodle nearly lost his front right leg. Absolutely hate this place. The vets have no bedside manner. A couple years back, two of my dogs both had lung cancer, they told of the diagnose and were totally uncaring. The only thing McLemore would say is they are going to die. If you love your pets, stay away from this dive. Please. I heard other horror stories too about this so called animal hopsital.Read Less

I used to be a very happy customer of this clinic. They have fair prices and wouldn't try to "over test" my dog when something seemed wrong but lately their customer service has been horrendous. The doctors are great but their front desk staff really needs replacing. Overall though, I still go to the clinic because my priority is that my dog is in good hands with a qualified vet. Read Less

Over the course of 20+ years, our family had our 5 cats very well tended to by the Vets and staff here.They have always been extremely professional during the happier times, and even the sad ones when we had to say our last goodbye to our fuzzy friends.Recently, our family adopted a 9-year-old rescue dog named "Emma."Once again, we are very thankful to have GAH nearby.  They helped us with Emma's constant itching/scratching problem that was driving us all crazy!(Attached is a photo of our now itch-free and VERY happy Emma!)So 5 cheers and 5 stars to everyone at GAH, and for all they have done for us for so many years!THANK YOU !! Took my dog Boo into Gateway Animal Hospital for a lameness problem in his left rear leg. Dr. McLemore was great with her. After examining her, he suspected a torn cruciate ligament in her left knee. He did digital xrays and was able to show me on a laptop computer the arthritis that had occurred due to the torn ligament. Boo had to have special surgery and I did not have to take her a specialist  for the surgery. This saved me a lot of money. Anyway Boo is doing great now. Can't thank them enough. Read Less

Love this practice. They have taken care of our furbabies for 15+ years. The staff is always very friendly and helpful and the veterinarians in the practice are very compassionate. Gateway Animal Hospital has always gotten my pets in to be seen very quickly when I needed them for emergency type situations. Even though I love them, I am only giving them three stars for a couple of reasons. For one, the facility is not that nice. It is an older building and you get the impression that it has been very well used through the years. To me, that's not a big deal because the care of my animals has always been top-notch, but a nicer facility would increase my rating. Also, I am not a fan of the boarding at Gateway. I take my animals to a different kennel for boarding. My beagle did not do well boarding there and they actually recommended that I never board him, which is just not an option. Sometimes we need boarding and he has done extremely well at the other kennel where we board him. I think he just needed a different type of boarding situation than Gateway is able to provide. Despite these criticisms, I will continue to take my pets to Gateway Animal Hospital for all of their medical needs. Read Less

I LOVE the staff. They are respectful both to patients and owners. I have a nervous Rottweiler who is very fear-aggressive and Dr. McLemore got down to the ground and interacted with us for over an hour to make my dog comfortable. My dog was sick so I took him in. There was a little wait but not very long. The vet came in and saw us and ran a few tests to make sure there was not anything to worry about.
