I found a 3 week old orphan kitten and was new to the area, so I needed to find a vet. Dr. Shetler and the staff are all wonderful. They got my kitten in right away, made sure I had all the info I needed, and even gave him a little nail trim and his first round of dewormer, all free of charge.You can also always text the vet directly with any questions, which was great during non-business hours when I needed advice.He just went in for a second visit (having some digestive troubles adjusting to formula), and they are great, caring people. Dr. Shetler obviously  loves animals and loves what he does.  I was planning to use Dr Shetler for the first well visit for my newly -adopted puppy, but he got sick.  Not knowing me, the front desk was accommodating and fit us in quickly.   They are caring and friendly and truly love animals. Dr. Shetler spent a good amount of time explaining my dog's illness, with thorough details about his aftercare.  I left a lot less worried about my puppy. This is by far the best veterinarian I have ever experienced. Dr Shetler and his team have a true passion and love for animals. I would not trust my animals with anyone else. Everyone here is down to earth, honest, professional and ultimately have the pets best interest at heart. You would do a disservice to yourself and your furry family member if you took them anywhere else. Before being recommended to this family owned and operated piece of heaven, my cat was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure by our former vet. I was told that I should either "put her down" or keep her in the hospital for two days and I quote "but it will be $2000 and she only has a 20% chance of living so we would recommend not to spend the money". I was devastated by the news and even more upset that I did not have time to process the information since I was passively told that I was keeping them there (past their closing time). With tears in my eyes, I immediately took my cat a ran out of that office, swearing to never return. Thankfully my aunt recommended Sunrise Animal Hospital where Dr. Shetler provided me with the best treatment options and today, my cat has a true quality of life. She gained 2 lbs after 4 days of Dr. Shelters treatments and her blood work showed improvement. I know that kidney failure will ultimately take my cat, but it wasn't that day. Let's begin with something imperative; this rating is not reflecting the professional quality of the doctor. Doctor Shetler was always fantastic on every level.Now you are asking why I put only on star, and that's what I will explain now.I have been going there since I got my dog more than five years ago, and I always been a loyal client with no concerns, in fact, I also brought my girl, both yellow labs, and again have no complaints.Now a few weeks ago my girl had puppies; I was a breeder back in time, and I know not to be near a vet when I have puppies, so I tried to order the vaccinations for my new family online but it happens that here in South Florida you need a prescription to order syringes. They call from the online Foster and Smith Pharmacy to request a verbal authorization from my trusted Vet, but to my surprise, they refused to do it.Let's begin to explain how this works: It's as you go to the doctor, but he will not give you a prescription to buy your meds, you will be obligated to buy from him, and him only.I went back to the Clinic, upset and canceled my upcoming appointment for both dogs and asked why? and they said "we don't deal with online companies," for what I replied: you don't have to, I'll deal with them, just authorize the order.Well, of course, they didn't, so now I have a big problem how to provide the vaccinations for my babies and also have to look for another doctor, not nice in any way.This is no only completely UNETHICAL but also borderline illegal.I'm very sorry to let that place go since beside the complete lack basic understanding and unethical practice, I was happy there. We wouldn't trust any other veterinarian than Jonathan Shetler. Recently, we noticed one of our cats had lost weight and was having difficulty with mobility. We were told to bring her in immediately, and Dr. Shetler spent an enormous of time examining her. She was not very cooperative, and he intuitively sedated her gently so he could perform all diagnostic procedures during that visit. The news wasn't good. After visiting a specialist at Dr. Shetler's suggestion, we made the decision to provide palliative care for our baby. Dr. Shetler supported us every step of the way and created a barrier-free process for her comfort and provision of pain medication. Just last week, we had to say goodbye to our 16-year-old Trixie. We made the decision on Friday morning, and were welcomed with open arms, as usual. The compassion at Dr. Shetler's clinic is beyond measure. He is so kind, so brilliant, and just a wonderful vet. Thank you, Dr. Shetler and staff - for being there to help our Trixie get to the Rainbow Bridge. We are forever grateful. My Family and I have been going to Dr. Jones for over 35 years and he and his amazing staff has cared over 4 dogs, and 3 cats of ours over the years. They have gone above and beyond for my dog Bella who ate something and was knocking on deaths door. They did X-rays and scans and found out she was stopped up from the item she ate. We put her into surgery and then she recovered at their facility. If they had not caught that then my big goofy Doberman would not be here today. I can not say enough great things about Sunrise Animal Hospital! My family and I continue to go there with our animals and now my new husband will be bringing his dog to their office! EDIT: 08/02/2017 - It is now over 4 years later and MY DOG IS STILL ALIVE PEOPLE. JUST AN FYI, if I had listened to the vets at this office, I would have put my dog to sleep and lost the ADDITIONAL FOUR YEARS I HAVE HAD SO FAR with this vet. He is still hyper as ever, healthy as ever. So just keep that in mind when selecting your vet. original review below:April 12th, my dog Yoshi became ill and I took him to the emergency vets followed by my vet the following day. They didn't know what was wrong with him but put him on antibiotics and sent us home. By Tuesday, Yoshi wasn't eating and was very lethargic. I took him back in that afternoon and they took blood for a test. The following day I called in for the results and there was nothing concerning as per the vet. A slightly elevated white blood cell count but nothing alarming. The next day, Thurs, I took him in for x-rays as we thought the problem could potentially be a hair he'd swallowed the week before and was possibly stuck. They did the x-rays and saw a figure eight image and suggested surgery to remove. Dr. Oliver Jones called me later during the surgery to tell me that Yoshi had pancreatic cancer. He stated that it was a 'mess inside' and that he didn't want to deal with it. It was inoperable, he said. He had Yoshi on morphine and wanted my answer right then, he didn't want to give me the chance to process. He made this judgment call with NO biopsy or testing to ensure it was in fact cancer. He didn't even take a biopsy. I almost agreed because Dr. Jones made it seem so dire and like my dog was in so much pain. But instead I picked Yoshi up the next day, Friday, and called around to another clinic for a second opinion. They referred me to a specialist. The specialist did an ultra sound and a needle aspiration. She did not want to open Yoshi up again so close to the last one. The pathologist did not see any cancerous cells in the needle aspiration test results, only inflammation. I returned to the specialist three weeks later for another ultra sound. The abnormal tissue has not grown in size or changed shape. Since the surgery, Yoshi has been eating, playing, running around, returned to his usual activities, and just overall is a healthy dog. If I had listened to what Dr. Oliver Jones had told me, I would have put my dog to sleep and erased what life Yoshi has left needlessly. How can a true diagnosis be made with such certainty that Dr. Jones displayed that day without testing? Without knowing the facts? Without giving ANY options? He demanded the right to put Yoshi to sleep. I don't think that a veterinarian who doesn't do everything necessary to ensure his information is true and accurate should be allowed to practice medicine. Though I know that is not likely to be the outcome here, I just want others to be aware of what happened to me and my furbaby so they don't have to go through the emotionally traumatic weeks that I suffered through.
