Capital Veterinary Specialists

Tallahassee, Florida
General Info
Capital Veterinary Specialists offers veterinary services to pets across Tallahassee and Florida by customizing visits according to each animal's response to pace, touch, and noise. The initiation of intake processes does not involve paperwork steps. Staff members watch the animal's entrance while noting any hesitation circling vocalization or weight anchoring at the door. These reactions guide the clinic to determine whether to implement a slow approach, quiet staging, or quick triage based on stress levels. Physical evaluations cover balance ear tension skin warmth hydration fur texture oral response breath pattern and handling resistance. The medical conversation relies on owner feedback which serves as a diagnostic foundation to explore sleeping positions and seasonal behavior changes along with appetite shifts and recent avoidance patterns. Capital Veterinary Specialists offers an extensive array of services including wellness checks urgent care geriatric mapping weight stabilization plans and pain indexing. Services can be split into multiple visits to accommodate pets that perform better in shorter activity periods. A segment of individuals finds advantage in a full-day staggered schedule that incorporates intermittent break periods. The design enables families to prevent retraumatization in animals that are noise-sensitive or have undergone surgery or displayed previous fearfulness. Post-visit planning involves intricate body-language guides alongside emotional response scales for patients to track at home. The recommendation for owners suggests they modify their communication patterns along with their scheduling and habitual activities to support post-care decompression. The scheduling of follow-ups depends on behavioral readiness instead of fixed timelines. Capital Veterinary Specialists delivers a veterinary rhythm to pet families in Tallahassee and nearby Florida communities that promotes both physical healing and emotional self-regulation while maintaining clinical precision.

I brought my kitty here after a trip to my usual vet. He was looking better after my regular vet visit, and less than 24 hours after I dropped him off at this place to get an ultrasound, he was gone. On top of that, they won't return my carrier with his favorite blanket and collar unless I pay them almost $2,000. I would have been better off just keeping him at home with us. Read Less

I have mixed feelings about this establishment. While the staff is very kind and hospitable. My husband and I felt nickled and dimed every time we had to go in. At one point they *tried* to charge us for medicine they injected that we didn't even authorize. They also can have lengthy wait times, so be sure to call ahead if you're thinking of dropping your pet off, picking it up or having it seen by CVS. Needless to say, we don't think we will return unless it's a dire emergency. Read Less

Zero communication after calling three times. I never once spoke with a doctor after they completed an ultrasound. Dr. Mia Skyes is incredibly cold and lacks any compassion. She is the only doctor I met and that was during intake. They took my dog out of the room to examine her and I waited an hour before anyone came back in AND they didn't bring her with them. She insisted on an X-ray even though my trusted vet said she only needed an ultrasound. They are in it for the money. I still never spoke to a doctor once I found out she had an ultrasound. Don't bring your pet here. It seems they only care if you have an appointment. Their urgent care is dangerous! Read Less

Dr Mia Skyes at Capital Veterinary Specialists is a cold, rude, heartless person. We brought our dog to have a mass biopsy. During this entire ordeal she never showed a bit of empathy or compassion towards our dog or any of us in the waiting room. She was cold and rude. Our dog was loved by all our family and close friends. Little did we ever think  that he would die. He was not a sickly dog nor was he symptomatic. He was a very healthy dog. He had recently had his teeth cleaned at a different vet and had a full blood panel which showed that he was in top shape. All his organs were functioning at a 100%. Even the veterinarian that did this blood test was very impressed with the results. There was no reason why our dog should have died from a simple mass biopsy. Dr Mia Skyes was uncaring and careless. Unprofessional and incompetent. While doing the biopsy, she perforated his spleen. But she blamed his death on distention but we immediately knew she was lying to cover up the real reason of his death. Hi She stated that he had a full stomach. But he did not. Like every single morning, He was fed breakfast at 7:30 am and he had nothing else to eat after that. They took him in for the biopsy after 4pm. How could he have a full stomach after so many hours?  And why didn't she ask when was the last time he ate? Because she really didn't care. Incompetent. When we asked her how did she know he died from distention she said we would have to pay for an X-ray to find out. So if we had to have his stomach x-rayed, how could she say he had a full stomach?  She didn't.  Another lie. Our dog didn't deserve to die. He had so much spunk in him. He loved playing with other dogs. He loved people. He loved hiking and trailing. He loved going to the beach. He loved cuddling. But Dr Mia Skyes took all that away not only from him but from our family and friends. We will never forget what she did. She does not deserve to be called a veterinarian. She is obviously in it for the money. Not because she loves animals. If she loved animals we would still have our dog with us today. We miss him so much. He was a beloved member of our family. I REGRET WITH EVERY OUNCE OF MY EXISTENCE bringing him to this so called Capital Veterinary Specialists. Specialists in what?  Maybe it's ok to bring your dog for simple routine checkups. But a biopsy IS a simple procedure. However, incompetence, lack of empathy, not caring enough, even with the simplest of procedures resulted in our dog losing his life and us losing our best friend. Anytime someone asked her a question without being disrespectful whatsoever, she would answer with a bad attitude, coldly and rudely. Shame on you "Dr" Mia Skyes. How do you live with yourself? How do you sleep at night? You turned out to be incompetent, lazy, careless, cold and a LIAR. You deserve less than zero stars. Read Less

Brought our dog here for a simple fine needle aspirate and ultrasound for a recent cancer diagnosis (absolutely no symptoms, just enlarged lymph nodes). A few hours later they tell us he died because they flipped him over and his stomach twisted. He was completely fine beforehand. They wouldn't let us see him before dying. The vet Mia Skyes was extremely cold and uncompassionate. We usually go to Dr. Hall in Tallahassee who is amazing, or VRA in Rockville, Maryland who are the best specialty vets we've ever met. I can't believe we trusted our dog to these people and he was dead within hours, and they didn't even tell us. We were in the waiting room the entire time, while they told us they were going to give him blood because they thought they caused his spleen to bleed after the aspirate. Turns out they were wrong and his stomach bloated as a result of the stress of flipping him on his back for the ultrasound - as the vet suggested and as evident by his huge abdomen after the procedure. When we questioned the vet on having to pay for what killed our dog she somewhat threateningly said we could choose to pay extra for an X-ray and maybe prove they caused bloat, but regardless we would have to pay over $1000 for them to kill our dog. They didn't even let us see him before he died. Absolutely never taking another beloved pet here again. Read Less

My experience at capital vet specialist has been great. Dr. Drygas specifically has been an incredible surgeon and caring specialist, he performed knee surgery(TPLO) on my 130lb Great Dane Zeus 2 years ago and Zeus was back to his normal ways running around and jumping in pools again after just 3 months. More recently I had capital vet do some X-rays on his other knee to see what kind of shape it was in, and they all remembered Zeus after 2 years! He and his staff truly care about the dogs and they want to see them healthy again just as much as we do. I can’t say enough about how professional their staff is and most importantly how much they care. I couldn’t imagine trusting a place more than capital vet. Highly recommend! Read Less

Doctors are fabulous. Incredibly caring staff and doctors, very knowledgeable. Staff is polite. I think there could be more consistent communication between the reception staff and the doctor's staff. It causes prolonged waiting time and clients being left uninformed as to the reason for the long waits or even an estimation waiting time. You may have an extended delay because records may not be transferred from the front to the back or billing may not be completed and sent up front so both sides are waiting for someone and clients end up getting lost in the shuffle. I would hands-down positively recommend them as your first go to for trauma, emergency, and Specialized Care. Read Less

Our 11 year chihuahua got sick one evening. She has gotten sick before, so we didn't think much of it. The next morning she didn't look well so we took her to our vet to be checked out. After IV, because she was dehydrated, blood work and an ultrasound, the results showed her gall bladder enlarged. They recommended we take her to Capital Veterinary Specialist for a second opinion and recommendations.     It was Friday after 5pm by time we left our vet and headed to CVS.  It was also the first night they started their Urgent Care Weekend. We were expected and they examined her and did another ultrasound. Since she was too weak for any surgery, the suggestion was to keep her on IV with antibiotic and pain meds, with the hope the gall bladder would decrease in size and not burst. She needed to get stronger. This would also determine whether surgery would be the right option.    We contacted them via text message the first evening before we went to bed to check on her. We received a response along with a picture of her, which made us feel reassured that she was in good hands. The picture gave us comfort.     We were able to visit her throughout the weekend, and everyone was so caring.  Every evening we texted to check on her.  Monday we had an appointment with the surgeon, Dr Drygas, for his opinion and recommendation. At this time she was looking better, but the gall bladder had not decreased in size. His suggestion was to do surgery and remove the gall bladder.     Surgery was done on Tuesday, and we were contacted by Dr Drygas after surgery was complete to advise us she came through the surgery well. We couldn't see her that day but we could check on her throughout the day. We saw her on Wednesday and Thursday she was released to go home with antibiotic, pain meds, a special diet with a follow up appointment in two weeks.     We highly recommend Capital Veterinary Specialists whenever you need a Specialist. The staff there are wonderful. All the vet techs, Dr. Skye, and even the front desk staff showed their patience and concern.  We were never made to feel that we were annoying or bothering them in any way.  We were always greeted with respect and concern and given peace of mind that our furchild was in good hands. I know she got the best of care. We especially appreciated our surgeon, Dr Drygas, who took the time to explain everything to us about the surgery. By time the appointment was over, we felt confident in him and agreed to the surgery.  His patience and understanding before and after the surgery, in addition to his tremendous skill in the operating room, saved our furchild's life. We cannot thank them all enough.  I highly recommend them. They are truly an awesome group of professionals.  I thank my vet for referring us to them for this life threatening circumstance.    Monday she had her follow up appointment with Dr Drygas. He was very happy with how she has healed and gave her permission to be herself.  In two weeks she has another follow up appointment with one of the Internal Medicine doctors for an exam and an ultrasound. After that appointment, we should know more of what needs to be done to keep her healthy and happy. Read Less

Nice place. We drove 2 hours to get here because they have specialized machinery that we didn't have access to from the vet we saw in PCB. Scheduling over the phone was really easy. They asked where we were coming from and then made sure to point out the time difference. Very friendly staff. The location is easy to find and get to. It was very convenient for us. There were 2 things I really did not like. 1) The rooms they take you to for your appointment have terrible acoustics so it's VERY difficult to have a conversation in them, plus there's really no privacy since you can hear every part of the conversation in the rooms adjacent to you.2) They don't examine your pet in front of you. They do the entire exam somewhere else. WHY? I personally want to see with my own eyeballs how the vet is handling my pet. I want to see the interaction to know how my dog responds and make the judgement for myself on how well the vet and my dog get along. That's important to me. However, my first impression of Capital is a great one and I would bring my pets back here if I lived in the area or I needed their specialized services again. Read Less

Capital Veterinary Specialists are AMAZING from beginning to end!  Absolutely wonderful experience! My 4 legged buddy Willie suffered a perineal hernia and I was freaked b/c I simply don't trust anyone with him.  Vets tend to (seemingly) look at their patients like income streams, or objects... Most of you know what I mean as you take your pet to the vet and they listen to your explanation as their inspecting your best friend.  Most of them do that, so thinking of one performing surgery on Willie was massively stressful, especially now that Willie is 12 yrs old (older dogs and anesthesia have some bad stories that I've heard). If this place treated Humans, I'd be treated there--I am NOT exaggerating.  The entire staff cares and treats your 4 legged friend like an important being, not like an income stream, or an object.  The entire facility is Hospital-like clean.  The staff gives off the impression like there's no where else any of them would rather be, and the Dr.'s/Surgeons remind me of what a Rock Star is in their field.  I was going to get 3 opinions and compare 3 surgeons before making my decision, and felt the process would take me about 10 days to do so.  I met with the surgeon (DVM DACVS Carl Jehn) and he did not rush, he explained everything to me in layman's terms until ALL of my many questions were completely answered, and I was 100% confident in him and CVS by the end of that appointment.  By the end of that 1st appointment, I no longer needed to see any other options...Willie had his surgery the next morning, and has since recovered 100%.... I'd NEVER go anywhere else....EVER.... Thanks for reading Read Less

Wonderful place! The love and care shown not only to our sweet boy but my family was really beautiful. It truly touched us the way they treated and loved him when they did not have to! Dr. Morales, Rachel, Becky, and the whole staff were wonderful to us. They throughly explained everything to us and gave the rundown of all our options, were available to us whenever we needed them, checked in to make sure everything went good the day after his treatments, and although my baby passed cause cancer got the best of him, it is because of these beautiful people we got that extra time to accept what we could not change and see him over his hump with a proper until I see you again. They sent flowers to us after his passing, I'm not sure why and again, they did not have to but it was the most beautiful thing during our grief and we were beyond grateful I could cry just typing this... beautiful place, beautiful people. Also just want to say to pet owners be careful of the flea medication you give to your pets. They don't tell you some of them are made by the same company who makes round up, I'd personally recommend you stop using it, throw it in the garbage and burn it but that's just me. We signed in, were taken back to a room where a tech asked us some questions, told we would be provided an estimate, and then took our dog away to be examined. I felt like we were dropping off our car to be worked on. An hour later we're still in the room with no word from anyone. During the question and answer session we were also told we would need to leave her there until they could get to the procedure later in the afternoon. This is not how to run a veterinary service. You wouldn't expect parents to have their child taken to another room while they wait somewhere else. Our dogs and cats are our children. We could hear other dogs whining in other areas and even saw a dog panting from anxiety in a small cage in the hall. This is not a cage brought in but a wall locker type of cage this business has there for that purpose. We have animals because we love them. They are all rescues and they are an important part of our lives. We expect any veterinarian we visit to show compassion. We saw no compassion during this visit. This is strictly a business looking to make money. They certainly don't give the impression that they are there because they care about animals. All the vet could say to us when we questioned the way they run their business is "That's the way we do things here." Well, that's not the way my loved ones will be treated. So if you just want to drop off your pets and not be bothered with them until these people do whatever they do then this is the place for you. If you want to be involved in what's going on and be by your pet's side you are better off finding someone else because this isn't the place. Read Less

My mom and I have been taking our little ones to Dr. Walker since he worked at another practice. We take our kids to Capital Specialists in the Jacksonville location which is new. Dr. Walker is a great specialist because he has the newest technology and is up to date on all the most current medicines for Dogs and Cats. We have found that his knowledge surpasses other specialists in many fields. He is currently treating my little Doc especially during a serious condition and a couple my mom's and my dogs for special medical issues. I know that they are getting the best care. I encourage anyone that has a pet that has special issues to visit them as a regular vet is not educated and experienced like specialists. Dr. Walker in particular is fantastic. Read Less

Absolutely the most professional, loving and understanding Docs and staff that I have ever seen.  My 13 year old Chocolate Lab has been slowly developing Laryngeal Paralysis over the last year or so - he had a horrible attack when we were 500 miles away from home - his airway was paralyzed, he could not breathe -  had to find and get treatment from three different emergency vets to get him home - as with most vets, our normal vet does not perform the tests or the surgery to correct this problem so I was sent to Capital - we were immediately taken into a private consultation room and seen by the kindest, most concerned Vet Tech that I have ever met - both docs that were going to be performing the tests and surgery then came in to talk to me, took the time to show me a video of exactly what was happening, the procedure to fix it and stayed with me until they had answered every question that I could think of.  I am in awe and have a hard time finding the words to describe this practice. All I can say is that Dusty is my child, for personal reasons more so than most - I have had some pretty good doctors personally but  I feel like Dusty has received equal or better treatment than I have ever received from a human doctor. They, without a doubt know what they are doing and appear to be busy because of it but they still take the time to give pet owners peace of mind, I have been called every day personally by the Doctor himself.  They do not cut corners, they have the nicest staff around the clock and even a special "after hours" number that they encourage you to call for updates.  I even received a text message with pictures of Dusty during his recovery.  I will pick my baby up today or tomorrow, he is 13 now but still has a few good years in him - I will never be able to thank Capital enough for saving my baby's life. I was devastated when I found out my German Shorthaired Pointer tore her CCL in her knee. She is show champion and has huge potential in the field. She is also a beloved pet and an important part of our family. Dr. Drygas examined her and took the time to explain the 3 types of procedures that could be done to restore my girl's knee and mobility. I consulted with two other orthopedic surgeons, one in AL and one in GA. Both surgeons highly recommended Dr. Drygas to do the surgery. The care, courtesy and compassion this veterinarian team has shown to me and my dog is what I would consider above and beyond. From the pre-op visits to the post-op care, calls and follow-up, the care and concern could not be more appreciated. Thank you Dr. Drygas and staff of Capital Veterinary Specialist. Read Less

My cat was suspected of having lymphoma. I took him to see Dr. Walker. We decided on chemo. My cat had lost a lot of weight before starting chemo but his eyes was still clear, he still had energy and he would still eat by himself but just not as much as normal. Well after starting chemo I explained to Dr. Walker that his quality of life went down and he was throwing up more and wasn't eating. He would groan and he was restless. I had to syringe feed him. He told me that it wasn't the chemo that it was his disease progessing and that we had to be more aggressive with the chemo. He is the doctor so I listened to him. Big Mistake. 3 weeks after starting chemo my beloved cat is dead. I was never told the protocol about my cat using the same litter box as my other cats. I was given 4 pills of an anti nausea medication that was for dogs but was used off label for cats. I had to give my cat 1/2 a pill 1 x a day. I spoke to a technician later who told me my cat was not suppose to take it for more than 4 days. She said that's why they only prescribe 4 days worth. I was so confused by that. I told her that Dr. Walker had prescribed 8 days worth of pills. She didn't really reply to that. By this time my cat had already taken it for 6 days. The information concerning the litter boxes and pills was a little too later. Dr. Walker and his technicians always seemed in a hurry but the waiting room was always empty. I will never take any of my animals to this place again. Read Less

Educate yourselves on what your truly putting on and into your furry family members. Take care. Read Less

Dr. Jehn saved my puppy's life. He was so underweight when we found him, we were worried he wouldn't survive. No vets could tell us what exactly was wrong until we got an x-Ray, and even then, no one could help, so we were sent over to Dr. Jehn for surgery. He and his staff took amazing care of Bastion and were able to answer every question we had without hesitation. Despite his weight, he pulled through with so much help from Dr. Jehn and his staff. Without them, I worry if he would have survived. They were absolutely amazing and Bestion is healing up great already. Read Less

When the option of surgery first got brought up for my sweet Chloe to remove bladder stones, I was very scared for her! But when it became an emergency, I was even more terrified. Chloe is our baby and suffers from separation anxiety so the thought of her staying a night away from us worried me the most. From the second I walked in the doors at CVS I knew we had been referred to the right place! Dr Jehn and his team did a wonderful and professional job with our fur baby and made me as the fur mom, have such a easy feeling about her going through surgery. Highly recommended!! After spending the better part of a day watching and interacting with the staff I was very impressed. One by one the dogs happily went outside with the vet staff to be relieved and just as eagerly returned inside. Everyone was treated kindly and Dr. Morales was especially nice to us. Since we live 2 1/2 hours away they did everything they could to accommodate us. After we returned home late that night we found we had a billing issue. Within minutes Dr. M quickly replied and the bill was corrected. Dr. Morales was so amazing, spent so much of her valuable time with us making sure we understood all of our options. The most friendly professional doctors around! Dr. Drygus helped my cat with a procedure that I was told by allied vet hospital it could never be done by any vets only in Tennessee, MAYBE. I am not a fan of allied but he started bleeding on a Saturday night at 11pm..my only option was allied...but NOT! Capital Vet takes animals 24 hours a day as well...So Allied is NOT your only choice. My 7 year old cat was bleeding profusely and in serious pain he had recurring uti's and stones Dr. Drygus completed the procedure. I was told he should start using his box again to urinate. I was a little skeptical and looking at having to possibly rehome him. After being separated from the other cats to recover for 2 weeks he is absolutely fine!! NO issues at all. I have my cute fun and friendly cat back! Thank you Capital Veterinary Specialists!!!!! Read Less

Read Less

He is currently treating my little Doc especially during a serious condition and a couple my mom's and my dogs for special medical issues. I know that they are getting the best care.

Read Less
