North Florida Animal Hospital

Tallahassee, Florida
General Info
Dr. Robert E. Lee originally established the practice that is now the North Florida Animal Hospital in 1951 and practiced medicine here until his death in 1989. Dr. George Simmons, who had come to work for Dr. Lee upon his graduation from veterinary school in 1988, purchased the practice from the Lee family at that time. Dr. Simmons maintained the name of the R.E. Lee Veterinary Hospital and was sole practitioner until joined by Dr. Randy Fullerton after his graduation from Auburn in 1990.
In 1992, R.E. Lee Veterinary Hospital underwent its first major renovation and expansion. At this time the name was changed to the current North Florida Animal Hospital (NFAH). North Florida Animal Hospital has undergone many changes since Dr. Simmons first took over the practice. Since that time, the size of the practice and the staff has tripled.
In 1996, Dr. Shane Burkhead, who had earlier worked here as a technician, joined Drs. Simmons and Fullerton. It quickly became apparent that NFAH was outgrowing the existing building and plans were made for a major expansion, one that would make NFAH one of the biggest and most modern private veterinary facilities in the Southeast. Ground was broken in the summer of 1999 adding 6,000 square feet to the existing facility, which was completely renovated. At that time the latest in diagnostic equipment was added. Grooming and boarding facilities were also expanded.
In 2000, Dr. Lynn Hagood joined NFAH as a partner and then Dr. Scott Welch joined in 2002. The referral practice for veterinary specialists was enhanced, as were many of the other ancillary services that we offer in an effort to meet any needs that our clients may have.
This is just a brief glimpse of North Florida Animal Hospital’s past. As long as we are able to maintain the high standards that people have come to expect from us, our future should be as successful as our past.

Me and my cousins brought our dogs in after we had a terrible incident in our home and nowhere else to take our dogs. They took them in quickly and with ease and were so friendly, which took a huge load off of our shoulders. Flash forward to a few weeks later and my littlest puppy fell down the stairs and hurt her leg. Needless to say, this required surgery. I've never had an animal have any kind of surgery so this was knew and scary for me, but the doctors and staff there gave me such a peace of mind. They gave my little girl lots of love and made sure she was comfortable, which i could tell when i brought her home that she had been spoiled. I was thoroughly impressed from the day we brought them in the first time until after my girl's surgery! Read Less

After 25 years of rescuing ex-racers we decided to find a new vet..we chose NFAH. Dr. Fullerton was outstanding in his knowledge and care of Greyhounds. So gentle and compassionate with Maggie. We are thrilled to finally find him. The wait was short, didn't even have time to fill out paperwork before we were called in. Extra kudos to Kelly for her compassion and kindness. All our questions answered and more. Finally a Dr. who listens and is genuinely concerned with Maggie's issues. The whole facility is so clean, odor free. We've found our new vet for life. Read Less

I trusted NFAH with my dog, it turns out the very was just our for money as she kept on prescribing medication that perpetuated and worsened my dog’s skin issue. My dog started going to NFAH as a puppy at around 5-6 months. One day she lost a small, thin patch of fur so we came to the NFAH to find out what was wrong. We were told she had an allergy. The vet put her on pills that made her loose more hair and after doing more research on the medicine, I had found out it was not recommended on dogs that young and was had bad life long effects in some cases (which I was not warned about.) Nonetheless I trusted this vet and continued on this path. A few more months passed and my dog had lost all her fur on one of her sides. She was completely bare. We went in for a check up and the Dr was not thorough and said she was healthy without even checking her bare side. When i brought it up, she claimed it was getting so bad that she might need a more aggressive-treatment, the sulfur dip for dogs. This sounded pretty scary (AND PRICEY) as I started doing research so i called los robles animal hospital for a second opinion. They took my dog in right away and within two weeks of natural treatments such as melatonin, fish oil, and prescription shampoo, my dog had more energy and her fur was almost completely back. I would NOT NOT NOT trust your animal there at NFAH. Overall, I spent well over $500 in checkups and medication at NFAH just to find out at los robles that my dog has a SEASONAL allergy that lasts about 2 months of the year but the pills she was prescribed elongated the issue. I'm so very glad that so many of you have had wonderful experiences with this animal hospital I however did not have a good experience I had a very traumatic one to say the least. I brought my cat in because he had been vomiting for about a week, I told the two technicians and the doctor that my cat would vomit every time we fed him and I was starting to get concerned because it has been a week and he was still puking. He was still drinking plenty of water and still defecating. Without even touching him she ordered X-rays and blood work and came back in with a quote of 2 to $400 I told her that I don't have a lot of money but if she thinks that my cat needs it I will gladly pay that I can afford it, and they took my cat away, the vet comes back in says she can't tell whether or not there's food in his intestine or a foreign body and that she thinks he needs surgery which took me by surprise considering she didn't even touch my cat but when she saw my face which was quite shocked she said that they would run blood work first to see what it showed. The blood work came back perfectly fine and she still recommended surgery she said they had a "payment plan" which was just a loan with ridiculous interest, I told them very clearly that I would not be able to afford a surgery so she offered why don't they hold him overnight. And then she brought in the new bill which was $800 that was my entire savings all the money I had that I have been saving for months and months. When they rang up the total I was short $56 so I had to call my dad and he had to loan me the money because they would not let me leave without paying them even though I told them I get paid the next day and would have a full payment if they would just wait till tomorrow which they wouldn't do andand that's when they again brought out the loan. I felt very uneasy and very rushed into a decision that I was not prepared to make but I was scared for my cat and so I left in there and when I left I immediately felt bad because not only did I just spend all of the money in my bank account but I just left my cat with people that I don't trust. Long story short I was there for a total of 4 hours they took forever to see my animal evaluate him and then come and talk to me, I felt very pressured into making a decision about treatment that I knew I couldn't afford and that the office was very aware of that I couldn't afford, they were very hard to get ahold of and that they wouldn't let me take my cat home until I talk to the doctor which I understand, when I went to pick him up I had to wait again another hour until I finally got to see him he was covered in bandages completely panicked and the vet still recommended surgery which I had to again tell her I couldn't afford. I felt like I paid for treatments for him that he didn't need they gave him IV fluid even though I told them he was drinking plenty of water and instead of recommending the much cheaper option of giving him some nausea medication and then letting me watch him at home they chose the expensive $800 route which I thought was dick move especially after I explained my situation. I'm so sorry that this is long but I just felt like I needed to write out my experience because it was a very negative one and I really regret trusting that this Animal Hospital would take care of my cat and me because they didn't. My aunt has been using this vet for years and has usually had a good experience with them so I recommended this place to a friend. Bad idea.  Her cat was having stomach issues and was constantly vomiting. So she brought in her cat around 7 a.m. She explained his symptoms and without even touching him the vet immediately took him into the back and said they'd have to do an x-ray. My friend is a college student with limited income and informed them of that right away. She asked how much everything would cost and they told her around $200 to $400 and although that was really pricey for her she told them she could manage it. The doctor came back in and told her that her cat had a bowel obstruction but they couldn't tell what it was and he was probably going to have surgery that would cost around $2,000-$3,000. She tells them she definitely cannot afford that and she would sadly just have to take her cat home and monitor him from there. They tell her that she CAN'T take him home because they gave him medicine that he might have an allergic reaction to and that they are going to keep him over night. She finally just agrees and asks to pay so she can leave. They finally bring her a bill at 10 a.m. for $800!!! She justifiably freaked out and informed them she didn't even have that much money in her bank account. She could only pay up to $760 because its LITERALLY all she had but she informed them that she could pay them the rest the next day once she got paid. They refused. She asked to be set up for a payment plan and they suggested she get a loan. They refused to let her leave until she called someone to get the rest of the money and wouldn't let her see her cat. It was basically emotional blackmail. They didn't tell her what procedures they were doing and they lied to her about the price from the beginning. And when she finally got her cat back (That day because they were also going to charge her for an overnight stay-another $100)  he was covered in bandages and missing patches of fur. It was like they had a bunch of interns that day and used her cat as a pin cushion for practice. It was awful. The poor cat was hyperventilating the whole way home and was beyond stressed it took two hours for him to calm down. And when she went back to discuss the bill. One of the staff informed her that before she had even talked to the doctor about what procedures they were going to do and how much it was going to cost-they had already started an IV and given him other medicines without her knowledge. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. They bullied my friend and took advantage of the fact that she was worried about her pet. I will never recommend this vet to anyone again and after my aunt found out what happened she said she isn't going back either. Read Less

NFAH has been our vet for over a year now. Though, they are always nice and make sure our pets are taken care of they are very pricey. We had a procedure done on our dog there that was over $900 and it ended up to be unsuccessful. We took her to a vet in GA and they fixed the surgery NF did, another procedure, and microchipped my dog for $200! A visit that would've been well over $2000 at NF. They do have a lot of vets up there and staff they have to pay, so that could be why they're so expensive, but I could not believe the difference a different vet charged us just an hour away. If you're looking for a personable experience with your vet, I'm afraid you won't get it here. I've had a different vet every time I go and not one has stood out from the others deterring me from ever requesting a specific vet. We make the drive now to save money and get a more caring experience for our dogs at a vet in GA. Read Less

Highly recommended! The facility is always clean and organized. The staff is helpful and energetic. It must be a great place to work, because the staff are always friendly, helpful, and passionate about all pets.  The vets all have great "pet-side" manner.  They all seem to love what they do and are very knowledgeable in their fields, but what I love the most is that they will not hesitate to consult with specialist vets, if needed.  One of our dogs had a very rare bone cancer in 2011 and Dr. Hagood and Dr. Burkhead consulted with our veterinary Oncologist in Jacksonville, then carried out the treatment plan in Tallahassee.  NFAH is very capable of handling chemo treatments, orthopedic needs, etc.  This facility is much larger than it appears! We have been customers since 2008 and have been more than pleased with the care all of our dogs have received..and most recently, our child's ferrets!  North Florida Animal Hospital is a superstar in the local business community and also very charitable in the animal community and beyond. 5 stars for vet services, 0 stars for boarding services... this is why I put 3/5 stars total. As for the vet, my dog is so happy and very well taken care of. All of the vets and vet techs are very knowledgeable and have always answered my questions and made myself and my dog very happy. As for boarding, I spent $57 for one night to receive my dog super skittish and smelling like she slept in her pee all night. She was also so dehydrated that she fell down the stairs upon arriving home. When I picked her up, I was told that she got nervous when someone went my her crate and she peed a little and rolled in her water bowl and that's why she was handed to me wet. The other news was that she was super good and had fun playing with the dogs outside. However, I did pay for extra play time because I know play time makes her happy. When I got home, my dog got very nervous if my hand was placed even remotely close to her face and she is usually a very cuddly dog, she loves people and all she wants is attention. She was wet, but also there was a bunch of dried pee on her like she wasn't walked when she needed to. Which is understandable to an extent, but if this was noticed, I would have liked a call for the option to have her bathed and would have paid the difference or at least be notified since what she smelled like most definitely didn't happen the day I picked her up. She came out with her face extremely drawn back, the skinniest I have ever seen it, and seemed very disoriented, I'm assuming from dehydration and whatever else happened. Definitely will be going back for the vet services but never again for boarding. As a puppy mom seeing what happened, I wished I never went away for the weekend and never want to see my pup like that again. Read Less

Our experience can be viewed from a different perspective than those who use NFAH as the primary care facility for their pets. While our pets are cared for by our local vet in whom we have confidence, we have, on several occasions, unfortunately found ourselves with very sick animals who needed more advanced and comprehensive care and were referred to NFAH. The level of care our animals received and the expertise in which it was delivered is in my opinion unrivaled. Most recently Our Pug Satchmo was diagnosed with a serious autoimmune disorder affecting his blood cells and was hospitalized for more than a week. He was on the brink of death. Drs Fullerton and Hagood collaborated in his care correctly diagnosed and treated him, kept us apprised of his progress and after his discharge continued to monitor and collaborate with our local vet reviewing lab work adjusting medicine without charge for months seeing him through a very serious illness always offering encouragement and demonstrating a particular empathy and kindness often lacking in today's high tech and hectic large practices. On a recent follow up visit for Satchmo we brought another of our Pugs along for the visit when Dr Fullerton recognized and correctly diagnosed him with an elongated soft palate and expressed concern for him. To make a long story short entrusting another of our beloveds to NFAH we scheduled him for surgery the very next week and he is home breathing easier than he ever has and so far doing quite well. In short we owe a debt of gratitude to the staff of NFAH which can never truly be paid. Tallahassee and the surrounding area are blessed to have a practice that exemplifies excellence in veterinarian care such as North Florida Animal Hospital. It is comforting to know should our beloved pets need expert care we know exactly where to find it.Read Less

My little boy dog gets nervous around people sometimes and Willie the vet tech took great care to hold him close and tell him he was a good boy and tried to comfort him while he got his shot. Dr. Valentine was extremely informative and I felt she actually cared about my dogs. Any concerns I may have had, she answered all of them. Also, the waiting room is awesome. They had free coffee and donuts for clients. You don't see that too often. I LOVE North Florida Animal Hospital! I recently moved to Tallahassee and I guess 4th time is the charm! I've been to 3 other veterinarians & 2 seemed like they were "the one" until I found NFAH. the 3rd was a joke I took one of my cats to, Punkin, and would never set food in That place again.    NFAH is amazing, you walk in the door and it doesn't smell like a vets office - medications & stale animals - it's clean, high powered A/C, & fast, friendly, & usually compassionate front desk clerks. The girls are okay but can seem a little detached sometimes.   They may be a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I've seen all the doctors and they are all amazing in their own way. You can tell this is their passion - for sure. They make my pets feel comfortable. I've had several spay & neuters - never any trouble. They suggested pain medicine but never pushed anything extra. They're very thorough in their visits.   I came in another time for my Nana kitty, she had used her 3rd life this time I believe, and got  in a scrap with some wild cat & got all infected and all. Dr. Burkhead did the surgery & was very kind & helped me grasp the situation better. We also just walked in with no appointment & were seen within 20 minutes. I was told the schedule was full but someone will be with you on minutes. Seriously, they care.    Wish I could give them 10 stars! Read Less

NFAH is the best veterinary hospital I have ever used, and I've tried quite a few throughout the state of FL over the years. I found them when my dog, Sadie, tore her cruciate ligament back in October. They squeezed her in the same day despite being very busy (as they always are) and Dr. Hagood and the vet tech (Justin) were wonderful with Sadie (she's usually very anxious around male strangers). They told us she needed a TPLO operation done to repair the ligament & ensure she never re-tore it. My boyfriend & I are both law students, so we had to wait until December to save up for the procedure. She went in on a Friday & we picked her up on Monday; Dr. Simmons was her surgeon (and we LOVE Dr. Simmons!). Even though Sadie often hides from guys she doesn't know, Dr. Simmons had her in his lap giving him kisses about 30 seconds after meeting her. He called us every day that weekend to let us know how she was doing, and even went in twice a day to check on her. The clinic is staffed 24/7 for patients who stay over night or in the boarding kennels, and I think that's really important--haven't seen that most other places. Sadie is healing very well (about two weeks post-op now) & Dr. Simmons, the reception desk staff, and the pharmacist (Michael) have all been incredible any time I call to ask a question or refill a med, etc. The facilities are always spotless, warm, & inviting. When we first checked them out, they gave us a full tour. They also have a hydro-treadmill (which Sadie will begin using once her stitches are out) for patients who need specialized rehab, and a CT machine. The only thing I believe they don't have is an MRI. They also use an online patient portal to request appointments or prescriptions, update info, etc. All in all, this clinic comes HIGHLY recommended (and I'm a neurotic pet parent, haha). 20/10! :) Read Less

I've been using NFAH for both my dogs for a few years now. I love this place and Dr. Haygood has been wonderful. The other vets I interacted with there were great too! The front desk staff can seem a bit detached at times, like you wonder if they really know what is going on or care to listen to anything too complex but the level of actual care my dogs have received is great. One of my dogs needed to have both his knees operated on for patella luxation requiring multiple surgeries and physical therapy. I feel really comfortable with them caring for my dogs. Regular preventive visits are great too. The only complaint I have is a few times they try to get me to purchase my preventative meds there even indicating that not buying from them is dangerous. I certainly not buying black market meds from some foreign country but I don't have to use the vet. In any case, they approve my prespriptions without issue.NFAH has a lot to offer and I've only had good experiences with the medical staff. Wow. What a great facility. After adopting my kitten Boozie from the shelter, I needed to find a vet as soon as possible to get him check out. I was referred here by a friend. I called, and an appointment was set up immediately for the following day. I pulled into the parking lot and parked right up front (during busy times, it gets crowded though). When I walked in I was promptly greeted and checked in. I only waited a few minutes before being taken into an exam room. The vet tech was very nice and ooh-ed and aw-ed over my baby Boozie. The exam was quick and when the doctor came in to give the vaccines, I was even more impressed. Dr. Valentine was the best. She was very affectionate with the kitten and I could tell this was her passion. She gave me great instructions and advice. They have a website as well with a Pet Portal that allows you to log in and manage all of your cats needs like setting up appointments right online. I requested medicine for Boozie and it was ready in a couple of hours. I have gone back 4 times since and each time is just as pleasant. No bad experiences at all. I would recommend this place to any pet owner. It will be a sad day when I have to find a new vet in another city. Read Less

North Florida Animal Hospital

Tallahassee, Florida
(56)
2701 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee Florida 32303
Dr.

I'm moving out of town soon and am sad to have to find a new vet. Read Less

Read Less
