In reference to the wait time, just because it was longer than I expected doesn't mean the staff did anything wrong. I just didn't expect there to be a line after 5PM, and that's obviously quite silly of me. The wait wasn't unpleasant, and the staff was all very professional and (obviously) quite busy helping other folks. I really like their courtesy and kindness towards the animals and the people. I would recommend this place to anyone who is in need of urgent care for their pet. I went in a little late last night for an emergency that could have been life or death and when I got there, I told them quickly what was wrong with my kitty and immediately they took her back to treat her. The paperwork was quick and easy and they really took the time to listen to me and my concerns. They cleaned her up well, took great care of her and showed down to earth hospitality. The staff is so attentive and caring for our little pup. Just so you know, they have different prices based on time of the day, so if you can get here before 10, you can save a few $$$ on an emergency. I brought our sick puppy here tonight, even though it was after 10, because they took such good care of our dog that passed due to complications last year. They layout the costs for treatment and also potential needs depending on the current issues and what "might" be needed if staying for observation. It's always scary when your best furry friend is sick and has to come to the doctor... but I always feel confident bringing him here. I awoke to my cat behaving very strangely and crying whenever I touched him, luckily my roommate was kind enough to take him into Northwood to get checked out while I went to class. Because he was a walk-in, my cat and roommate waited for 3 hours to be seen by a doctor. A wait time was understandable due to the busy nature of the hospital, but I wish they had made my roommate more aware of the process and how long it would take for my cat to be seen while he was suffering. All of that aside, after I arrived, Dr. Smith came in to examine my cat and give me a run-down of everything. She was absolutely wonderful! She did her best to calm my fears while also making me aware of every step of the process of treating my cat, and she made all the information very easy to understand. She was incredibly kind and compassionate, and made sure I was aware of the costs of everything since I am a broke college student. I can't thank her enough for not only helping me feel better about things, but also my little man. My cat Shelby pasted away in March. The Northwood staff took good care of her getting her ready for her final resting place in my back yard. My first experience at Northwood wasn't a very pleasant one. I lost my best friend of 10 years, Sugar, to cancer. Nonetheless, the doctors and staff at this animal hospital always welcomed and nurtured me, my questions, and my pain. I got the feeling that they genuinely cared about Sugar and wanted to do everything in their power to help her. During the time that she was hospitalized they allowed me to visit even twice a day for as long as I wanted. When I lost her, Dr. Fleck was incredibly patient and kind, allowing us to say goodbye while outside under some shade. She was extremely reassuring about the decision we had to make. They took really good care of my sweet girl and I feel lucky to have had them so near my home. In fact, over the past few weeks since Sugar's passing the only thing I wished for was a follow-up from the doctors to remind me that this was ultimately the right decision. (As many of you might expect, this has not been an easy time since she's been gone.) Almost as if they knew, just yesterday in the mail I received a surprise hand written card from Dr. Fleck and the rest of the staff who worked with Sugar and a molding of her paw print that they must have taken after we had said goodbye. I am so incredibly moved not only by the diligent work that these people put into caring for our pets but also the very warm thoughts they give to us grieving owners. I was recommended this place by a friend and when I came in the place was very clean and organized. I was greeted right away. My vet tech on the other hand Ashley was rude and indifferent to my pets situation. She acted like she had better things to do than to listen to the issues my let was having. I explained to her several times what was wrong, but she failed to listen. I spent hundreds of dollars on test with little results. I will never bring my pets here again. Read Less

When the Vet. who cared for our other guinea pig wasn't going to be in for a few days, Dr. Amy (Ami?) was highly recommended. When I called, I was given an appt. When I arrived, we didn't even get a chance to sit down before Oreo was seen. I expected to be waiting 15-30 min. or so and very surprised not to have waited at all. The atmosphere was refreshing. There were no grumpy faces....EVERYONE had smiles and were friendly. It felt like no one was there working 'just a job.' They're there because their work is not a job....it's a passion! Love the staff. I came from a vet where I would make an appointment and have to wait 30 -45 min to be seen. I know that if i make an appointment here I get in and out quick. I personally love being able to talk to the vet, because I am a first time dog owner and I always have questions. this was something I couldn't do at the old vet I was in, the staff always made me feel dumb for having questions.But at Northwood, the Vet is always kind and understanding when I have concerns. Upon reading the stellar reviews I decided to take my to Northwood Animal Hospital, but I was thoroughly unimpressed. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE! I brought my cat here for a simple check-up, and they took loads of overpriced tests. Not only did I leave spending twice as much as I would have if I went somewhere else, but I unknowingly brought my cat home infested with fleas. Disgusting! They wrapped him in a (probably pre-used) towel and I'm sure that's where he got them from. When I called and explained what happened, they told was "Well maybe a flea here could have jumped from one animal to your cat... I don't know what to tell you." I am ashamed. I will not be going here again nor recommending any of my fellow pet owners to come here. Terrible. Read Less

I have taken my cats to Northwood for over ten years. Dr. Brumfield is excellent. I am appreciative of his tremendous wealth of knowledge and how he explains things simply. I trust his advice and am appreciative of the way in which he handles things step-by-step when trying to figure out why an animal is sick. With three dogs with varying levels of issues it is important for me to trust that I'm getting expertise at a reasonable cost. We were very impressed with the staff's communication about our case. Because our cat was hospitalized for several days, she saw many techs and three different vets, but every time we encountered a new person, he or she was familiar with our case and able to help us with any questions or concerns we had. We found that incredibly impressive. When we transferred our case to an internal specialist, Northwood very quickly sent our cat's records to the new office, which greatly helped the process move along smoothly. We feel like everything Northwood has done has been for the care and benefit of our pet and we feel that we have been treated with respect and included in all decisions along the way. Thank you. I cannot say enough good things about Northwood and Dr. Brumfield in particular. I have had my rescue pup for about a year and a half and he has had chronic ear problems in that time so we are there about once a month. They have gone above and beyond figuring out what's going on with the little guy's ears. All the vets, techs, and staff have been fabulous. That they are a 24 hour emergency hospital, do drop off appointments so I can leave him while I work, and are open Saturday mornings just adds to it. Read Less

My elderly cat Bigum (almost 17 years old) was brought into the hospital for being lethargic.   Dr. Kevin Brumfield took such good care of him.  He tried had a blockage and the doc took great care of him.  However, Bigum's organs were just shutting down and within a month or so, I had to put him to sleep.  Dr. Brumfield said that he wanted to be with me when we did it, because my daughter wanted to be there holding him.  Instead of letting another doctor be there whom I didn't know, Dr. Brumfield scheduled us to be there when he was able to be with us.  He was so kind and explained to my daughter what was going to happen and showed us such compassion.  It was extremely hard for us.  He then had him placed in a little coffin for us to take home and bury.  Northwood Animal Hospital might be a little expensive, but the care and compassion that they show is incredible. Awesome and compassionate staff! Instead of running a battery of tests all at one time, Dr. Smith was kind enough to start the basic tests one at a time waiting for results to pinpoint the health issue my dog was exhibiting before going to the next test. The best place to go for the worst procedure. We went here recently for a euthanasia of a dog I've had since elementary school (currently in my mid 20s) and even though it was one of the worst experiences of my life, NWAH handled it perfectly. The room looked like an apartment and the vet techs were very reassuring towards everybody including the dog who never even knew he was at a vet's (a place he hated to go). We were allowed to carry out his last day as we chose, so from his perspective all he did was go for a car ride, eat a triple stack bacon burger and fell asleep. It was clean. Even a minor (poo) accident by a dog was handled in the best way: just total acceptance and friendliness! Xena is already making improvements in her little lizard life! Dr. Smith was wonderful. She understood that I'm the sort of animom who has questions and feels much more able to help my critter when those questions are answered by someone I trust to have expertise. I've cared for animals for over 30+ years and have literally never had a more pleasant, positive vet experience than at Northwood. Cannot say enough good things about the wonderful care my dog received there last week. Suffering from congestive heart failure, I took him in as an emergency after hours when he was having trouble breathing.  The whole staff was there for him, and for me, immediately. They were able to stabilize him eventually and send him home after a couple of days.  He is doing great now.  They have followed up on his progress, and though his long-term prognosis is not good, have given him a new lease on life.  I am very thankful for the caring and dedicated attention we received and would recommend this hospital to any loving pet owner. I had a bad experience with Northwood Animal Hospital. I had previously been a fan and had recommended it to many people, especially because of their outreach efforts in the community. However, when I was out of the country recently, my neighbor unfortunately decided to take my dog there after he ate part of a toy. It was just after hours on a Friday, and they said they needed to keep him for observation, which they did for 3 nights. The bill was $1,000 without surgery or medicine. When I returned to the country, I called and left repeated messages for the manager to discuss the bill. She never returned my call. When I went in person, several of the employees were very nice, but the one person who assisted me was not very helpful. I again reiterated that I would like a returned phone call from the office manager. I left several messages, but she didn't have the courtesy to return my calls to speak with me. I work a lot in the animal rescue and shelter community and I have fostered hundreds of animals, so I have dealt with many different veterinary clinics. Based on the lack of customer service and inflated pricing on the bill, I would never return to Northwood Animal Hospital. I am also no longer recommending it to others.UPDATE: It's now 5 months later, and I never did get a single returned call about my bill despite repeated messages. Read Less

Over and over again I am left with the impression that Northwood sincerely cares about each animal and owner.  In summary Northwood is an amazing vet.  Years ago they saved one of my dogs.  Recently, another older dog, had complex problems and Northwood understood I was on a budget, yet provided incredible care.  Through the whole process, I just felt that each person treated me and my animal with a lot of dignity and compassion.  This matters a lot to me in a vet.  Their science is of course is top notch.  For as long as I live in Tallahassee, I will always take my animals to Northwood.  FYI, they do a lot of incredibly charity work!  We donate as much stuff as we can to support their philanthropic efforts. This review is way overdue like 7 years overdue. Back when I was a freshmen in college i decided to adopt a puppy from the tallahassee shelter, i named her Kahlua. Kahlua got attacked pretty bad by a bully when she was only 3 months old. Her injuries were really close to fatal, the first vet recommended us to put her to sleep but i couldn't so we took her to Northwood animal hospital where she received supportive care until she was stable enough to have surgery. Kahlua had several deep wounds,  a broken leg, and  her intestines were visible. Northwood Animal hospital saved Kahlua's life and made my life a lot better.  Dr. Kevin Brumfield, I will forever be thankful. We thought Kahlua was going to end up being a tripod but somehow Dr Brumfield saved her leg and life and made her walk again. While money was an issue for me (i was a college student), northwood animal hospital worked with me so my dog could get the care she needed without having to worry about money, we worked out a payment plan and kahlua got about 3 or 4 surgeries she needed, not to mention all the bandage changes and PT she needed after surgery. Kahlua stayed in the hospital for 9 days, I visited every night and the staff was always really nice. Dr. Brown also worked with kahlua, she was also a great vet. By the time kahlua was released from the hospital i ended up adopting a kitty from the hospital (they save sick stray animals), i thought since they saved my kahlua i could at least give one of their animal a home. I have had kahlua and pepe le pew for 7 years now  and i have yet to find an animal hospital as great as northwood. So why am I writing a review after so many years, well i live in DC now and i cant seem to find a vet like Dr Brumfield, (really frustrating), which made me realize I might have to bring kahlua back to Tallahasse to get the service and care she deserves. The staff is very friendly and they truly love animals. One of my dogs had a tumor that they thought was cancerous, and the vet was very concerned and calming when she told me the news. KILLED my beloved Cockatoo!!!!! Cloud, whom I found in critical condition around 1:30AM EST on Friday 12/23/11. needing immediate vet care. After calling quite a few vets in the local Pensacola area I came across Northwood Animal Hospital's info through a google search. I called them, told them the issue, and asked if they had a bird specialist who could help. They told me that they did have a bird specialist on call and I could bring my bird to them. I even called back to verify that they had someone on call because there was no one in our local area who saw birds after hours and my birds condition was critical. Again they told me that they did have a bird specialist on call who could see her. We drove the 3 hours to get to Northwood, arrived around 5:00AM EST. Once there they told us that they didnt have a bird specialist on call and we would have to wait until 8:30AM EST. We were charged $119 for the vet that was on call to state that she could do nothing for my bird because she did not know anything about birds. I was called back at 8:45AM EST and the Dr. Cavell came into the room around 9AM EST. The Dr. had examined my bird already. She advised that we do a procedure called a purse string suture. She stated that she did not want to do any surgery and that it would be best for my bird to see her regular vet for further treatment. Dr.Cavell did the procedure which closed my birds vent. Dr.Cavell stated that she was concerned about the bird not being able to go to the bathroom but she should be ok for a couple days. After speaking to my regular vet he stated that he never does a purse string procedure on birds because it can kill the bird if they can not go to the bathroom. We had left around 11:15AM EST. I did not state any concern at the time because I felt since Dr. Cavell is a qualified specialist she knew what was best. They never gave me the impression that my birds life was ever in any danger. After leaving Northwood I did call University of Florida at 11:10AM EST. who has an exotic bird veterinary surgical care team to see if I could take Cloud in to be looked at. Their soonest availability was not until Wed. 12/28/11. The lady on the phone did ask if it was an emergency situation and at the time of the call I did not feel it was. I then called my regular vet on the way home to see if I could get Cloud in sooner to be looked at, their soonest availability was not until Thursday 12/29/11. We arrived home around 2:45PM EST, it was then when I noticed Cloud extremely lethargic, had vomited and could barely stand, her eyes were glassy. I called Northwood right away 2:52PM EST, told them the situation and they told me that Dr. Cavell was not in the office and would not be back for another 30 minutes but they would give her the message to call me back when she returned. Our regular vet was already closed for the holiday weekend and we had no vet to turn to as we watched in horror our bird go from worse to finally dying. At 4:10PM EST. Cloud died in my arms. In my opinion from the information I got from my regular vet after cloud died about the purse string suture, and the fact that there was not a vet on call to attend to Cloud as soon as possible, which if I had known that there was not a vet on call who could see Cloud immediately I would have gone to Gainesville to the University of Florida, but I went to Northwood because they were closer by a few hours and I felt cloud was in dire condition. I feel the lack of medical immediate attention given, the procedure done, and lack of close observation led to the death of my bird and hold Northwood ultimately responsible for this death. Something I feel with the proper care and treatment could have avoided such a tragic outcome. Read Less

Dr. Brown, who works at Northwood Animal Hospital is just special.  She always treats our dogs with care and a smile, and she's a wealth of information whenever you have questions.  We try to request her whenever we go in, but, when she's not there, haven't met a bad one.  All the vets at Northwood seem really nice.  And the prices are reasonable too!
