GREAT vet office! Dr. Dees and Combs are fantastic and do a great job keeping my pups healthy. I always feel confident leaving there and never rushed. They always answer all of my questions and, trust me, I have a lot. Both of my dogs have been through their whole vaccination routine here, and my youngest was neutered here (Dr. Combs). My oldest had surgery to remove a mass (Dr. Dees).They also offer boarding, which my friends use without a problem, and will administer medicines to your pups who are boarded.I would put 5*, but their administration has been a bit lacking lately in scheduling appointments and sending reminders--the nonimportant stuff, all things considered. They were also just AAHA accredited. Small parking lot, but I've never had an issue. Read Less

I won't take my dog anywhere else. The doctors and techs truly care about each and every pet that comes through the door. They offer a wide variety of services, can usually get us in very quickly with or without an appointment, and won't force services, treatments, or medicines on us that we don't really need. They have always answered all of my questions fully, and even explained to me my dog's x-rays with a comparison to a healthy set versus my dog's set. The first time my pup was seen at the vet and he loved it! Everyone from the front desk to the vets were so nice! Through his shots, exams, bath, and time there he was treated with so much patience, care and puppy love. He was given toys and treats. They helped make everything clear to me from estimated prices to explaning the medicines and procedures to me thoroughly. Also the doctor took the time out to print me a packet of training tips for concerns I had like leash pulling, chewing things, and being overly excited with others. Oak Wood Animal Hospital is an amazing place. They are very welcoming and friendly towards you and your pets. I was not able to pay for a full yearly check up for my two dogs so they helped me figure out a payment plan to get Lilly and Prince what they need in a timely manner and when I could pay for it. We have been in every other week for a month and a half now, and every time is a great experience. I have even been there when multiple animals were brought in for emergency situations, and the entire staff was on top of the situations. Keeping the environment as calm as possible and getting everything figured out. They also made sure to let me and another client know that they have not forgotten us and that they would get with us as soon as they could. That is exactly what they did. You will love Oakwood Animal Hospital! I have been taking my pets there for years. The doctors and staff are knowledgeable and friendly and go out of their way to make your pets feel welcome. They are through and take their time will you and your pet, always remembering your name and your pet's name, which is very important to me. Oakwood is part of our extended family. Our miniature schnauzer has a lot of medical issues and because of Dr. Matt's expertise and treatment, he doesn't even know he's sick. At almost 12 years old, he still has the energy of a young pup. I've had my cat, Frank, for 2 years now. I brought him in because he came home one day with 2 hurt paws. He couldn't even walk right! I brought him in to Dr. Combs and she patched him up. Only had to wait about 10 min before we could get in to see her. After she gave Frank an exam and patched him up, she told me about how he was overweight for a cat his size (I don't know his age because he was a stray) and I had no idea because I thought cats were supposed to be chubby! So she told me all about proper diet habits and what kind of food to give Frank to get him up to snuff. I am really thankful Dr. Combs gave me the advice, because Frank has had a lot more pep in his step since I changed his diet.Read Less

Having been an avid animal lover all of my life and married to a veterinarian for 25 years, I was particularly selective in finding a veterinary hospital that measured up to my standards. After my husbands death, I relocated to Tallahassee, FL. I have two cats and two dogs. Finally I found the "best in town," Oakwood Animal Hospital on West Tharpe St. The doctors and their staff are not only competent, but like myself, really love their patients. I've noticed this time and time again. In fact, when I go down for dog food or other materials, my rescue dogs must go down with me to see Doctor Matt. When I had a broken knee cap and was in a cast, Dr. Matt came to my home and gave my "children" whatever they needed medically. A newcomer to Tallahassee, and a new dog owner, I took my basset hound to Oakwood Animal Hospital in February 2017. The experience AMAZING!!!! FACILITY OVERVIEW: The facility was great and super clean inside and outside with no smell of it being an animal hospital. It was also well laid out to keep the dogs and cats separate at the entrance as to not cause any tussles. STAFF OVERVIEW: The staff at Oakwood Animal Hospital was absolutely awesome from the first time you walk through the door. They greeted us and made my basset hound feel special from the very beginning. The young lady that conducted the exam on my basset hound was very friendly and gave me a complete overview of the charges (from the very beginning), what they had in mind for her and another option for her visit should the situation arise. The remaining staff was great, as was the vet, where both myself and the basset hound felt comfortable in the environment. PRICE OVERVIEW: The prices are exactly in line for the medical costs of animals by current standards. OVERALL: I gave the staff and facility five stars and would suggest them to anyone that is looking for a great vet.Read Less

I spent some time reading the other reviews. I know some people have complained about the rude attitude of the staff in this animal hospital. To be fair, every time I went there, my dog and I were treated nicely. But later I realized what Oakwood animal hospital made me pay several hundreds of dollars for, was a lot cheaper at any other place. It is ethically and morally wrong to use the love and responsibility I feel towards my dog to get me to agree to a million ABSOLUTELY unnecessary tests and procedures. (Unnecessary in the opinion of two other vets in Tallahassee). I am extremely disappointed after finding out that this has happened to several other of their clients. Doctors Dees and Combs have a "full package" approach that has helped my adopted Corgi with his medical and psychological issues. The Vets and other staff have been exceptional when it comes to helping us make a decision with a chronic illness our cat has. He has severe diabetes, just diagnosed and we struggled with the decision to let him go or to treat him. They gave us all the information, to let us decide on our own, and even gave us plenty of time to to try a diet alone treatment which was not effective. We decided to try giving insulin, and although the initial costs are pretty high, it has been worth it. Through the diet changes, and insulin injections twice a day, our old guy is a different cat. Although he's still a lazy old guy he is very much more social, and cuddly than he has been in a long time. We have more expense, and decisions to make, but with this Team we know we are doing the best we can for our friend. Read Less

Dr. Deese is the most compassionate woman i have ever met.....I will not use any other vet while i live in tallahassee not only did do everything they could to save my foster dog they made an impression of his paw and his name on it. They cut a lot of charges out for the rescue i work for which is a nation wide rescue with little funds from donations only. This might be a somewhat lengthy review but I want to explain why I am not just arbitrarily leaving a bad rating:I adopted a 3 year old cat from the Leon County animal shelter and brought her in for a recommended veterinary visit. At this visit I was told that my cat needed to come in for a dental cleaning, and that the clinic was having a discounted special for such cleanings in the month of September. I scheduled an appointment for her and brought her in, and was told that the cleaning would amount to around $500, WITH the discounted pricing. I was also told that the clinic recommended doing blood work before the procedure. I agreed to have the blood work done, and left in expectation that I would pick up my cat that afternoon after her cleaning. I am a graduate student who was in class and so missed the two phone calls that I received from the veterinarian. When I was finally able to contact them I was told that they had not performed the procedure. Apparently when they first took my cat's temperature it was elevated, which the vet admitted was most likely attributed to her being stressed as she had just been dropped off. The veterinarian said that they had run blood work on my cat and the original results came back with all sorts of weird levels. The veterinarian took my cat's temperature again and it was normal, ran the blood work again and it came back normal, and said that she exhibited no physical signs of being ill. She also admitted to me that they have been having trouble with their blood work machine, and so there was really no certainty as to the reliability of the results. They decided not to perform the procedure "just in case" but recommended that I bring her back in in a month to have more blood work done, and then back in another time to perform the dental cleaning procedure. Although this was frustrating I was led to believe that this was in my cat's best interest. When I picked up my cat from the vet, I was informed that I would be charged $60 for the (unreliable) blood work that had been done that day, and $60 more whenever I brought her in again per their recommendation for more blood work. Keep in mind that this situation would not have been necessary were they to maintain their machines in proper working order. I expressed to them that I saw no reason why I should be charged twice for blood work when it was their machinery producing varied results. The veterinarian refused to be flexible about the charges, and so I essentially spent $60 to be told that something could possibly be wrong but probably wasn't, and to wait. Mind you if I had declined to have the blood work done, I would have been saved the $60 and my cat would have received her dental cleaning that day. I find this sort of business practice very unethical, and want to warn people about a practice that is clearly just looking to take advantage of any opportunity they can to make money. As a graduate student I have an extremely limited income, and cannot afford to just keep throwing money at the clinic without receiving any benefit from it. I found the veterinarian's refusal to acknowledge their fault in the situation unreasonable and her attitude towards my being extraneously charged extremely dismissive. I was visibly upset, and was told by other members of the staff once the veterinarian left that they would let the owner know about the situation and have them contact me. It has been almost a week and I have received no such call. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE. Instead I would recommend finding a veterinarian who is interested in providing animals with the care they need, as opposed to nickel and diming people however possible. Read Less

I took my puppy Rocky to get his first set of shots and wow you guys did such an amazing job taking care of us. All the staff member were very loving and kind to my baby boy and i couldn't be any happier with the amazing service. All of them gave me great tips on caring for my Rocky. My dogs and I absolutely love everyone at Oakwood. The doctors and staff are the most wonderfully caring and professional people. They provide not only love at every visit, but boundless attention to detail regarding animal health. My aging dog has developed multiple health issues through the years. Each time, Dr. Bowman, Dr. Matt, and Dr. Combs have gone above and beyond to diagnose, treat, and help her get back to as close to normal as possible. All the supporting techs and staff have shown great kindness and concern. They realize how much I love my dogs and I feel like they do as well. Worst clinic I've ever been to receptionists were EXTREMELY rude, stayed in waiting room for over FOUR hours not a soul checked on me or my animal. The staff is a joke at best, to busy flirting with each other or talking smack about clients. (Your walls and doors are not sound proof) This places feels more like a car dealership then a clinic. I talked about my budget and was treated like I shouldn't own animals at all. If you want to be treated like garbage by all means schedule an appointment, but if you want to be treated with respect stay far away from these gaping prolapsed anuses. Read Less

I got personal phone calls checking in on Alexander and keeping track of him in his recovery. Since then, I have spent *a lot* of time at Oakwood for non-emergency stuff. They treat every one of my kids as their own. The staff actually kisses my Danes on the head as they walk in and I have seen them show that kind of love with every other client's dogs. What struck me one day when I was in the back with on of my dogs was that Dr. Wanous leaned down and kissed another clients dog on the head as it was brought to the back. The clients weren't around. It was not a 'performance'. Oakwood genuinely loves their clients, and that is something that is very hard to find anywhere. Finally, I am grateful to Oakwood because Great Danes are a very complicated breed. The vets at Oakwood are VERY smart, but not arrogant. And the mistakes I have had happen or seen at other facilities because of arrogance never happened at Oakwood. If they don't know something, they find out. They research and learn. They are always up for new challenges and always rise to the occasion. I would recommend Oakwood with highest regard and without reservation. Read Less

Over the years I have taken 4 dogs to Oakwood Animal Hospital and I have to say, their care has been outstanding! 16 year old chow mix just recently died..she was OLD. 9 year old pit/lab mix is perfectly happy and healthy! 3 year old American Bulldog is perfectly happy and healthy. 2 year old German Shepard is perfectly happy and healthy. Good looking and clean facility, but we encountered some things we didn't like: 1) a very unpleasant and arrogant receptionist 2) they are way too hungry for money, it's just rude. I understand they are a business and need to make money, but what about ethics? 3) the vet we saw last time looked young and unexperienced. He suggested our dog had a seizure and tried to convince me we should do blood tests and potentially some kind of MRI, to determine if there is brain tumor, and spend thousands of dollars on it; a different, more experienced vet in a different clinic determined in 5 mins that she had a disc injury that didn't require any treatment, and, indeed, she got well on her own and for free.Read Less

They will exhaust every possible option (that obviously cost you money) before doing what actually should be done or listening to you about something you know has previously worked. The girls at the front desk are amazing and SO helpful, the doctors, unfortunately not so much. Today, she got upset that a receptionist gave us information in regards to the medicine that we had been asking them to give our dog (since that's what he usually uses). The doctor preferred to leave us "in the dark" and would rather us keep buying our prescription from them even though it wasn't working. They also told me, AND CONFIRMED the day before the appointment, that we would not be charged for a recheck. We were charged and the doctor refused to reverse the charge bc "the first recheck is free and the second isn't. That's their policy" again, she was upset that the receptionist told me there would be no charge for the recheck. You expect people to take advantage of you/your wallet maybe a a mechanic shop but not where you take your fur babies, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. After I told her we would take our business elsewhere she replied with "great glad we could settle this so easily". No remorse for my dog that is still having issues or the close to $700 we spent on prescriptions and skin tests that didn't work. Read Less

This was my first visit to this vet and it definitely deserved the five star rating it has. I saw DR bowman and she was wonderful. She was very through and took the time to address all my concerns. Since I'm constantly in and out of the vet due to my dogs allergies the student discount they offer was a big plus. Paws down the very best vet in town!! The staff and doctors really love all the animals and have a wealth of knowledge to share with clients. You can't find this type of care anywhere else! Last year we had an emergency with our pup and Dr. Matt didn't hesitate to come in after hours to help our girl. Brandy and the Oakwood team made her long term recovery possible, she had to stay with them every day to receive meds, and it's because of their love and attention that her recovery has gone so well! We've also dealt with surgery and rehab for our other dog, so we can attest that the quality of care has remained stellar throughout the years. Throughout the years I have remained a loyal customer because of the "family" feel I continue to receive from the Drs and staff. I have had six different "kids" (aka pets) that I've taken there throughout the years. Through it all, they have continued to provide me with a caring service. I've been a client at Oakwood from 1998 and I've seen it go through a lot of changes over the years. The most recent changes have been nothing but good! The staff is friendly and always greets me with a smile and the doctors are wonderful. Dr Simmons sat with me when I had to let go of my cat 2 years ago and was very supportive during the entire process. My dog goes in monthly to enjoy is 'spa days' and gets excited when we make the turn into the parking lot. I highly recommend Oakwood to all of my friends! Read Less
