My pug dog, Arthur, is 9 years old. He's been a wonderful, faithful pug. I decided to take my pug to this Banfield location because it was convenient and hey, it's attached to Petsmart, where I always bought his food, right?? If Petsmart associates with Banfield, it must be at least decent, right??? the vet tells me, "OH ..your dog's teeth are terrible" or something of the sort, you should really get him to see the dentist because if you don't, you're putting your dog at risk for x y & z.. " I mean, to hear this vet talk, you'd of thought that my dog's teeth were in shambles. After all, I'd never given him those dental treat/tarter control things.. and after all, I'd never taken him to get his teeth cleaned in his whole 9 years.. shame on me, what a terrible dog owner. So I sign up for their wellness plan again for the 2nd year in a row, only this time it includes that dental cleaning exam where he gets anesthetized because, "Oh no, my dog's plaque is terrible, what a terrible owner I am!".. and so he goes in to get anesthetized & gets his teeth cleaned, great... everything went according to plan, perfectly smooth.. EXCEPT, when I pick him up, the vet assistant tells me, "His teeth looked great! we hardly needed to clean anything off of his teeth! just a tiny bit of plaque at the back..." wait---WHAT?!? I WAS LIVID. How are you going to tell me that my dog's teeth were amazing???? Do you realize I paid $300 to get those teeth cleaned and put my dog's life at risk going under anesthesia??? I never said a word to the vet assistant, because she was just doing her job and she was honestly so bubbly and sweet, but to the vet who told me my dog's teeth were terrible and full of plaque and that I needed to get his teeth cleaned... OH I wanted to give her a piece of my mind! Can you imagine my anger.. I TOLD THAT lady that I didn't have an extra $300 to spare.. I TOLD her that, but she kept a straight face and told me he needed it done and then I learn that his teeth were actually in great shape and hardly anything was needed .. I live in a wealthy area so I understand most people around me feel $300 ain't no thang.. but please... not everyone who lives in this area has $300.. we have apartments around too... Ross is great, we can wear brand name clothes at cheap prices and look like a million dollars when we don't actually have that kinda cash. Maybe I did well in my shopping at Ross, but VET, look, I didn't have that money to burn. AND THEN there's the anesthesia!!!!!!!! ANIMALS DIE WAY TOO OFTEN going under anesthesia. The world is happier because Arthur lives in it! I would NEVER have put my dog under that kind of a treatment unless I HONESTLY BELIEVED it was in the best interest of my dog. TO HEAR that vet tell it, she made it sound like my dog DESPERATELY needed that treatment, that his teeth were just awful.. Are their profits down so low? are they not making enough with their business??? Where is the owner??? Was his vacation last year not fancy enough? Do his children not go to a nice enough school? that he felt the need to make sure that the bottom line met a certain amount at the Banfield Pet hospital??? I shake my head. And then there was the suggestion afterwards that I give my dog antibiotics... after all, they were discounted 20%.. I said, "Do I need to give him antibiotics?? More potentially harmful medicine??" Then the vet assistant stepped back and thought about it, "No.. not unless he swallowed tarter and a bunch of plaque, etc"... "Oh, okay then, I guess I won't buy any".. BUT I didn't word it the way the vet tech/assistant worded it.. the way in which she worded it, it sounded as if my dog needed it.. why are they even bringing it up, unless my dog ABSOLUTELY needed it?? they were going to SELL that medicine to me, those antibiotics,.... I'm sure they believe taking antibiotics at random is perfectly safe...I HEAR NIGHTMARE stories about pets not waking up from anesthesia.. IT IS NOT THE SAME as a human going under anesthesia. Who is the vet looking out for? Your dog? You? or the business?? Read Less
