Dr. Cown is best vet in town. He doesn’t waste time or money, and he always finds a practical solution for my dogs and cats. I’ve brought in pets in emergency situations as well as routine checks and I’ve always left with a healthy animal and a healthy wallet. I would NOT recommend Athens Animal hospital ! I dropped my pup off yesterday morning for a checkup and nail clip, only for them to call me a few hours later and tell me that he is scared and they can not get their hands on him . YOU ARE THE PROFESSIONAL . When I booked the appointment whoever I spoke to told me the hours were 8-7 . When I arrived at 5:45 no one was there and they had my pups doggy door open letting cold air in . MY DOG IS A INSIDE DOG . IT WAS 33 degrees ! I finally got someone out there at 8pm to give me my dog (after calling the cops). The VET would not even get my dog out of the kennel . He made me go in , My baby was scared to death . I had to climb in the Kennel with him and hold him to get him to come out. When we got home I noticed they started to clip his nails and 2 of his paws were bleeding. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE . ALL Around . And the Vet was a complete prick about everything. NEVER AGAIN! Read Less

I honestly wouldn't give them a star if that was a option. We took our dog in because we thought she may be pregnant. She had started gaining weight. He took blood and sent it off and said everything came back normal. He told us she was pregnant and in labor because her temp was below what it normally would be and that's a sign of labor. He even said he felt two puppies but knew there were more in her. Two days passed and we went to a different vet to find out she had cancer and had a huge tumor which had burst and she was bleeding out before us. Our sweet dog was in such pain and we had to put her down. We are so upset that he diagnosed her with being pregnant when she was dying before us. She had to suffer longer because we had no idea. Very upsetting. But on that note, I guess anyone can misdiagnose... The staff is nice... That's the only good thing I have to say. Read Less

So glad I stumbled upon Athens Animal Hospital when I first adopted my dog. It has turned into a years-long relationship thanks to their experienced, friendly care and reasonable prices. The place looks a bit like a Coen brothers movie and may be off-putting to some, but with the quality of service I've never minded. Dr. Cowan was the best. I have 4 cats so it isn't easy taking care of them but even after moving out of state and three years gone he still remembers them. During the time I was in Athens he had reasonable prices, could be reached any time and made me feel comfortable and the cats were kept in great shape. Dr. Cown and staff have been the vet for my two dogs their entire lives and has even saved one of their lives on one occasion.  One of them ate a bunch of gum that had Xylitol in it, an artificial sweetener that's poison to dogs.  I called Dr. Cown and he told me to get her in immediately.  He stopped an appointment he was in and got her the help she needed.  His prices are good and he's very friendly.  Also, gave me his cell number in case my pup took a turn for the worse.  (she's fine)If I could give 6 stars, I would. I love this place, and so does my little rescue pug. Foster parents get a discount, and his prices are so reasonable- easily more than half of what you would pay in atlanta.
