I cannot brag on this vet enough. I have German Shepherd that has seen Companion Animal since she was 8 weeks old. They have always gone out of their way to make every visit a positive experience with squeeze cheese and lots of love. Now I have a wonderfully behaved adult shepherd that loves vet's office trips! We were treated with the utmost care and compassion when we brought our wonderful old dog, Scooter, in for his last visit. We felt as though we were among friends. I'm always so pleased with the way the staff displays kindness and compassion for my pets. I have two adopted dogs that always come to appointments at the same time. The smaller of my two dogs gets a little anxious (ok, actually she whines and cries the whole time) but the staff never seems to lose patience. The receptionists are especially sweet. My friends dog was injured and ended up going to this vet after being referred by another vet. Well our experience had been horrible. He ended up passing away over night after being left alone all night. Then trying to get them to explain what exactly happened to him what was his cause of death etc has been a nightmare we keep having to call to find out things because no one ever told my friend she was welcomed to come up there and speak with the vet until after I called and asked if she could. They didn't even send a sympathy card (which most vets do. I have worked at vets and have seen this first hand and have signed the cards) they only sent their bill. Then they didn't even advise her she could get his paw prints in molding and ink I had to call and ask which then they informed me they were out so I had to go buy the modeling clay myself and bring it up there. Then I called to have the bill explained to my friend and the lady Beverly that answered the phone was extremely rude and insensitive. Then when I spoke to the Dr he pretty much defended her actions and attitude by saying well she's just frustrated that different people have called a lot asking questions about him. I have never had such a good experience at a vet's office.  Ever.  I called Companion Animal Hospital yesterday in a panic.  When I woke up, my 9 year old cat was walking around blindly bumping into walls and cabinets and acting as if she could not see.  I had just moved to Athens 2 months ago, and had not yet had a chance to get a vet yet.  I called their office crying right when they opened at 8 and they told me to bring her in.  Dr. Weaver came in and told me they needed to do some tests.  They gave me a blanket to wrap her up in because she was cold.  After the test results came back, Dr. Weaver came in and told me the bad news...and she gave me enough time to call everyone to say goodbye to her.  I stayed there with her while Dr. Weaver did the procedure and she placed my baby in a box and even took her out to my car.  When I got back in the office she hugged me and told me about how sorry she was.  The staff at the front also did the same thing.  At one of the worst times in your life you need people like this to be there for you.  My husband was out of town and could not be there with me when all of this happened, so it was nice to have people who care so much that they are there for you in a time of need.  Don't go see anyone else!  This place is the absolute best. They were great when our female cocker spaniel was diagnosed with cancer and had to go through chemotherapy (done at UGA, but blood work was done at Companion on the off weeks) and when it was time for us to let her go. I have to say that I'm pretty surprised to see any negative reviews on here- my experiences with Companion have always gone above and beyond my expectations. The first time I came here my dog was injured and they worked me in at the last minute, which I really appreciated. I've always found everyone from the desk staff to the groomers to the vet to be very kind and informative, as well as cost effective compared to other vets I used to go to in Athens. It's a little out of the way for me, but I'll happily be taking my dog here for as long as I live in Athens. Read Less

I have been taking my dogs to Companion Animal Hospital for almost a decade and a half, and I won't go anywhere else. They have always treated me & my dogs with expert care and attention. The staff is upbeat, friendly & prompt. The doctors are knowledgeable and treat me & my dogs with great respect and kindness. When I was a starving college student, they worked with me on my bill & determined a plan of care for my dog that was something I could handle. When we lived in Athens, our eldest Husky went here. Not only did they charge an outrageous amount for just plain check-ups, they kept charging us hundreds and hundreds of dollars when we had questions about a sore on his neck. Multiple visits (and several hundred dollars later), led to a diagnosis finally! Oh but wait, the FIRST diagnosis was incorrect.  The second diagnosis was incorrect! THREE different diagnoses in all- all wrong, and thousands of dollars wasted in pointless trips to Companion Animal Hospital!It was as if they were just throwing scenarios up on a wall to see what would stick:(1) Its just a bug bite. Give us more money for this medication, antibiotics, and this vet visit.  (Swelling didn't go down, finished all his meds, so we took him back a month later)(2) Maybe he got shot with a BB gun and it lodged in his skin. Give us more money for the shave, prep, to X-ray his neck, someone to read the x-Ray, oh and these different antibiotics and meds while we wait on these results. Don't forget you have to pay for this vet visit too. (Put him on some more antibiotics and meds for another few weeks)(3) Oopsies, this actually looks like a growth. Please give us MORE money so we can charge for the shaving, prep, anesthesia, biopsy, mailing sample to the lab, someone to read those samples, and this vet visit. We will let you know in a week or two to which you will have to come back and pay for ANOTHER vet visit and then see what we have here. Seriously?! After the 3rd 'diagnosis' we immediately took him out of there, as in "no, don't do a biopsy, send anything to the lab, we are finished here" and took him to an amazing, kind, and compassionate vet in Colbert (who's so awesome we still drive 1.5 hours to send our dogs to her, even though there are numerous vets within 5 miles of us in Decatur). I cannot believe we WASTED so much money and time for that circus of a vet practice. If you want solid answers, compassionate care, and a vet that doesn't just care about their bottom line, then DO NOT go here. Seriously. Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. I just wanted a grooming for my pet cat. After understandably asking for vaccine proof I informed them I didnt have it but my regular vet could fax it over which they agreed to. I had all her vaccines done at oglethorpe and another at Madison county. They first told me oglethorpe had no record of rabies vaccines. After I called myself oglethorpe myself, they told me they indeed had my rabies vaccine done and could provide proof. Then after telling them the other could be obtained from madison county I left the pet with them under the assumption that she would only be groomed. They called me later and informed me they had to do a physical exam and distemper vaccine which would be 65 extra dollars. They were very argumentative from the start. I informed them id be willing to pay half since I never agreed to it and noone informed me it was done until afterwards and I shouldnt be responsible for it. They told me they would have to hold my pet until I paid them for everything. Clearly this is a place that cares nothing about pets or their owners and just want as mucj of your money as possible. Now Im having to file a claim and report with BBB, American veterinary association, and state general inspector.Read Less

I'm a full time student, bartend full time and my sweet basset hound is the love of my life, so when she started having trouble walking I took the $70 something dollars I had to my name and took her to the nearest vet; which happened to be Companion Animal Hospital. We had our visit, received a shot and was given medicine to help my dog walk again so when I got to the desk to pay I hoped that the cash I had on me and a promise to pay  the other half when I got paid the following Friday, I was positively astounded when the receptionist told me I WOULD HAVE TO GIVE THEM THEIR MEDICINE BACK. I had to carry my dog out of their vet office because she was struggling that much to walk and they would not let me give them all the money to my name and pay the rest two days later, so I could give her the medicine she so desperately needed. It was, genuinely, the most disturbing scenario I could have imagined. How can an establishment claim that they're committed to animal care and watch as I carried my handicapped dog out of their building because I could not pay the other half for two days. I got back into my car and cried because I didn't know how to get the money to pay them before Friday and couldn't bear the idea of letting Belle walk like that a day longer. Read Less

I absolutely love it here!  The staff is nice from the moment you walk in they interact with you and your pet and make sure you know exactly what is taking place that particular visit.  Drs. are knowledgable and helpful and do not rush you if you have questions.  Also, the cat & dog waiting rooms are separate so no more noisy barking when Murphy sees a kitty!  I also have two cats (Pumpkin & Elliot) who I take here as well.  Another plus is that it's way less expensive than any other vet I've ever visited.  Needless to say, even though I do not live in the Athens area I continue to drive an hour and a half to Companion for my pets :) Read Less
