Wonderful first impression, but serious red flags followed.
New to town and looking for a vet, I brought my 9yo Cattle Dog mix in for a thyroid recheck. The exam was wonderful, very thorough, the doctor and tech checked everywhere and spent a very long time with us, listening and answering all of our questions. It was a wonderful visit - It felt like I found a great home for our canine family.
The checkout was surprising. Much more expensive than the quote over the phone. The test, exam, and antibiotics (for hotspots) were twice what I've paid at my previous vet on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles (where you'd expect to pay too much), and no estimate was provided to cushion the blow.
Here's the confusing part, in chronological order, and why I got out of there with my dog's records:
1) They would not call the thyroid prescription into PetMeds, saying they "don't have a fax machine."
2) They couldn't fill the thyroid prescription in-house, and the Kroger pharmacy doesn't stock the dosage (uncommon for humans, just very common for dogs) so I have to give my dog six pills a day instead of two. Okay, minor inconvenience, but still.
3) When I called in for a refill of the prescription a month later, I never got a call back. I had to try a second time (no record of the first call), and still no call back. I called a third time, and the "prescription" was ready and waiting for pick-up without ever notifying me. This whole process took weeks - Good thing I reordered in advance of running out!
4) When I went to pick up the paper script for the thyroid refill, the receptionist hands me a bottle of antibiotics instead. The doctor had refilled the antibiotics without calling to ask why my dog needed a refill - wouldn't you want to know why the previous antibiotic hadn't cured an infection? That's a potentially deadly problem.
5) I asked for my records to take to a new vet, and the receptionist replied with an offer to fax the records directly. Remember, they previously said they couldn't fax to PetMeds because they "didn't have a fax machine." Was I lied to? Was I purposefully inconvenienced? I didn't bother asking. It didn't matter anymore.
The disorganization and unreliability is why we left this vet after one visit. I move around a lot, and have worked at vet hospitals myself, so I have more experience with vets than the average owner. I know how harmful the consequences of bad communication between the client and the doctor can be. I have an old dog, who deserves to have a vet we can trust to help manage his health through his golden years. So we'll keep searching. Read Less
