This was the absolutely worst experience I have ever had at pretty much any veterinary hospital ever, in my entire life. Not only are they grossly overpriced for pretty average animal care but the staff- particularly Holly, the incredibly petty and unprofessional office manager- is the absolute worst. To set the scene: I called inquiring about the price of neutering my 65 lb dog about a month before the incident, I was told $400 which was a little steep, and I asked to cancel the appointment I agreed to set. The person speaking to me, which was actually Dr Wiere himself, and he agreed to canceling. Great, I think was everything was resolved. However, I was wrong. About 4 days before the previously cancelled appointment, an employee called me to confirm the surgery with my dog. I told them No, I thought I cancelled it because I couldn't afford that price at the moment. She told me I could  set up a payment plan where I put 1/2 of the surgery cost down and pay the remainder in 2/3 weeks time. I agreed to the payment plan and continued with the week, doing as i was instructed and not feeding my dog the night before the surgery, then finally bringing him in for surgery at 8 am. Only an hour after I dropped my dog off, I got a call from Holly the office manager telling me I have to pick my dog up immediately. The payment plan I was told about was all a lie formed by some renegade employee, and that all payment plans must be approved by Holly herself before surgery is confirmed. I explained the situation to her and hung up, with her calling back a few minutes later to tell us our procedure quoted at an already too high $400, literally doubled to $800. Regardless of me being the person inconvenienced, I was given no apologies for the literal waste of time that was bringing my dog to a clinic for an hour and waking up that early when I already work night shifts. I instead was told i can pay the doubled fee, putting down $400 and then paying the remained in JUST TWO WEEKS following surgery. I instead was met only with an arrogant, and frankly rude attitude with absolutely no concern to us as customers. I literally had to tell her to stop speaking over me and to "allow me" to get a word in on MY OWN DOG. At the end of our conversation, I told her I would not be using their animal hospital anymore because of the unprofessional and overpriced business practices they have. She told me "ok that's fine" and HUNG UP. Overall, they're a shitty, overpriced animal hospital that can barely afford to update their building, let alone take care of your pet. Don't trust Dr. Wiere, the money grubbing veterinarian, Holly the supremely bitchy office manager, or pretty much anyone who works there. They will over charge you. They will give you mediocre pet care. They will NOT give you or your pet the treatment they deserve. DO NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL! Read Less

i'm having mixed feelings about this place. i brought my dog here to be checked out for diarrhea. now i know dogs can cost you but this is a little extreme.so before i go, i call & ask how much a check up is just to see the doctor , i was told 45 dollars. mind you this is my first puppy ever so that's all i was expecting to pay. i informed the women on the phone how bad  i'm doing financially at the moment and asked if it was possible for the doctor to just look at her and if he has to treat her can i come back when i had the money, she told me yes. so i get there , whatever is wrong with my puppy was worse then i thought. so he does a x ray, tests her stools gives her some shots and then gave me medicine to take home. i was very surprised to hear that my tab was 300 plus dollars. like i said i'm a new pet owner so i didn't know vets do you like that. so holly was kind enough to let me do a payment arrangement being that i was a first time patient.... that was very kind and VERY helpful because i had no intentions on spending over 100 dollars . now after payed 300 plus dollars you would think my dog would be okay or at least if she wasn't i could take her back to the doctor and they will fix what wasn't fixed in the first visit ? no , i went back, because THE SAME THING was wrong with her. all he did was tell me something else was wrong and tried to charge me all these things. i'm making the review now because i'm cleaning up and i came across the vet bill. 14 dollars to trim my dogs nails ?? after i dishes out 300 plus dollars ? and if it's 45 for the office visit/ exam why does it say discount next to the charge ? & then 1 dollar and 80 cents for bio waste ? if they're talking about picking my dogs stools up THAT IN THE PROCESS of cleaning myself that's just crazy. Dr. Weir is a great veterinarian. That being said, my recent experience with his hospital was not the best. I took our dog in to get a growth taken off. He did surgery on her and took good care of her. On post care, he did twice did laser therapy. Two weeks after her last visit, I got a call from the business manager and she said we owed for the laser therapy. We were never told once that the therapy was an extra charge. I told her to call me on the following Monday and she did not return the phone call. I was sent a bill for the additional charges. This is unethical treatment, the charges should ave been  before being done, and a bill presented before leaving. Read Less

Do not go there to get any animal groomed.  4 out of the 7 dogs i brought in, looked horrible after i picked them up, worse than before i went there. My neighbors were shocked and took pics to post as well. I just told the groomer id be back in the morning for her to complete the grooming job. Out of nowhere,  the office manager, who i didnt meet, was calling me over and over, then txting threatening txts saying that i would "be removed from the premises "  WHAT???? All i did was send the pics of the unfinished job to the groomer and said ill c u tomorrow. My moms brother in law is actually on the Board of Directors at Facebook so they are putting this situation, the txts, and the pics, nationwide so people know to stay away from this place!!! Also thank goodness for high profile attorneys too!!! Spare your animal and your own frustration, go elsewhere for grooming. The manager is out of line and completely incompetent!!!!! Read Less

I've have cats for over 30 years and all of them have gone to Lawrence Animal Hospital. Dr. Weir has taken care of my diabetic cat and other special needs cats with sensitivity and kindness. He does not do unnecessary procedures and is mindful of costs while still giving a thorough examination. One day I saw a feral cat on the road who had been hit by a car. I scooped him up and rushed to Lawrence Animal Hospital. The cat was in great pain. Dr. Weir euthanized him and then consoled me afterward. Dr. Weir has been an awesome vet. Read Less

I have been going here for 20 plus years and been very pleased. I trust Dr. Weir and he is a really good surgeon and conservative in his treatment. I don’t like having to deal with a different vet every time I go in which is why I left one of those practices years back. While it may looked closed down because of remodeling, this place is amazing. I have a 5 year old FIV+ cat that I adopted a year or so ago. Within the past few days I noticed a lot of sneezing and congestion, and became extremely concerned because of her weakened immune system. I called everywhere nearby on a Saturday and most could not get her in, and those that could were going to cost an astronomical amount. My step dad referred me to this vet and when I called they said t...hey could get me right in and to start heading that way. The doctor got us in very quickly, checked her out and it was an upper respiratory infection. If left untreated it could cause a secondary infection that could be fatal. He gave her a shot of antibiotics, gave me some decongestant and told me to give him a call if things didn't seem to get better. We were there for all of about 20 minutes. In and out and very nice to both me and my furry companion. I will be using this clinic for my pet moving forward. If you are looking for a good vet with affordable prices, this is the guy to go to! My cats go for regular check ups and a few one-off visits for minor issues. I have no problem getting appointments and they are always met with quality care. They groom the cats too (a rare find), they always come out tip -top, clean, smelling good and i have not had any negative experiences with breathing issues or ear infections afterwards ( which I have had at other groomers) Read Less

I live down in Grant Park and still bring my cat up here (she's going on 10 years now!). Yes, we dubbed this place "the shack", but I've always received great service. My cat's teeth were on their last legs and needed to be pulled. A few in town vets quoted nearly 700 bucks to extract her teeth...uh, do i look like a money tree? This was the worst experience I have had as a dog owner. The first thing i saw when i walked in was a cat, on the dog side, laying on the bench. This cat seemed to be sedated. Could hardly keep its eyes open and was breathing very heavily. Not sure who the cat belonged to because I was the only one inside. There were also ants crawling up the side of the bench on the other side of that cat. Here is why it was such a terrible experience for me and my dog. My dog is very well trained, has never bit anyone, never had a problem with him at the vet's office or anything. First, they did not let me go back with him to get his nails trimmed; as I was sitting in the front I could hear him yelping. I have never heard these noises come from my dog. As I sit in the office with tears in my eyes I listen closer to hear whats going on. The vet was fussing at him! I am sorry but when you cut his nails so short that they are bleeding 20 minutes later I could imagine that he will be hard to handle. As i said before, he is very well trained. He has never pissed or pooped in the house. According to the vet, he pissed and pooped all over her. She claimed that she also had to muzzle him which is ridiculous because my dog has never been threatening to anyone. When she comes out, she proceeds to tell me that I have a terrible dog, that I need to bath him because he stinks (probably from the peeing and pooing from being traumatized) and that I need to bring him in regularly. I am from Louisiana so I normally just take him to the vet at home, last time i took him to the vet was a month and a half ago and he did perfectly fine. I will NEVER return to this clinic. Traumatizing my dog and then being rude to me is not the way to keep a customer. I hope everyone sees this and is very careful about their decision to take their pets here. Read Less

Meh, I was referred here by a friend.  But there appears to be only one vet, who is over-worked and over-extended.  There's nothing like being rushed to make you and your dog feel any less important.  And talking to the vet is like a scene from The West Wing, where your dialog literally takes place while you walk down hallways to keep up with him as he goes from room to room.  Not to mention, there was a seemingly crazy stalkerish guy hanging around the parking lot and lobby, who had to be asked to leave by the vet techs quite a number of times.  But he never really left.  Instead, he just harassed people as they came out of the building. I had a really bad experience boarding here that I feel led to a persistant urinary tract infection from which my dog never recovered. One of the main problems was that they didn't feed her the correct amount, they fed her about half her food and she lost about 30% of her body weight during her stay. She was a very good eater under any conditions and they claimed she ate all her food, but they gave me back the bag half full at the end of her stay even though I had calculated out the amount of food she would need so it would be just enough for the whole stay. She was very malnourished, sick, and had sores and cuts all over her body. I would not recommend boarding your pet here. Read Less

I've read the other reviews and yes the outside of the building is not appealing. If I hadn't read the other reviews I might have kept on driving. What's important though is the care that is given to your pet when inside. My dog (T-Bone) had no control of his bodily functions the weekend before and on the Sunday before, things got worse. I thought that his kidneys had failed and was terrified that I was going to lose not just my dog but my best friend. Dr. Wier and his staff exceeded all my expectations. They fit me in as a walk-in ASAP. Dr. Wier did some quick test and quickly gave me some peace of mind which was priceless. It turned out to be a treatable infection in his intestines. He is now at home and on his way to a full recovery. I was stunned when I got the bill. I was thinking it would be four times as much as it was. This is the ONLY vet I have used for my adopted dog and rescued cat. Yes it costs more at Lawrence Animal Hospital than at (shudder) Banfield etc however the peace of mind I have knowing that Dr. Weir is experienced, professional, competent, and that my ""kids"" are safe in his care is priceless. The only complaints I have are that Dr. Weir could be more nutrition-minded when treating his patients. He was medicating my dog for things that cleared up within weeks of changing her dog food to grainless (at the suggestion of a minimum-wage-paid pet store employee, no less.) Additionally Dr. Weir isn't exactly a ""warm fuzzy"" in terms of personality. I don't take it personally but it seems like something that could limit that essential client-doctor relationship. I guess some are turned off by the kinda creepy-looking building, but don't judge that book by its cover :) Read Less

i'm having mixed feelings about this place. i brought my dog here to be checked out for diarrhea. now i know dogs can cost you but this is a little extreme.so before i go, i call & ask how much a check up is just to see the doctor , i was told 45 dollars. mind you this is my first puppy ever so that's all i was expecting to pay. i informed the women on the phone how bad  i'm doing financially at the moment and asked if it was possible for the doctor to just look at her and if he has to treat her can i come back when i had the money, she told me yes. so i get there , whatever is wrong with my puppy was worse then i thought. so he does a x ray, tests her stools gives her some shots and then gave me medicine to take home. i was very surprised to hear that my tab was 300 plus dollars. like i said i'm a new pet owner so i didn't know vets do you like that. so holly was kind enough to let me do a payment arrangement being that i was a first time patient.... that was very kind and VERY helpful because i had no intentions on spending over 100 dollars . now after payed 300 plus dollars you would think my dog would be okay or at least if she wasn't i could take her back to the doctor and they will fix what wasn't fixed in the first visit ? no , i went back, because THE SAME THING was wrong with her. all he did was tell me something else was wrong and tried to charge me all these things. i'm making the review now because i'm cleaning up and i came across the vet bill.

Read Less

What was even more comforting is that the Dr. Wier gave us his 24/7 phone number in case we had an emergency or any questions. We can't wait to have more pets so we can bring them here!
