This woman killed my dog. I took my 12 year old dog who was my world into her, she was in perfect health other than her eye that needed a cataract removed, all pre op tests and labs came back great. I get a call an hour into her surgery that she is gone, went into cardiac arrest, couldn't get her back, that doctor had NO reason for it, she said she couldn't explain it. I had a necropsy done on my sweet dog at UGA, showing all her organs were in very good condition, they ruled it was most likely drug induced. My dog was given too much medication by this incompetent woman throwing my dog into cardiac arrest, and I lost her that day. Do NOT take your loved pets here, she is incompetent and shouldn't be practicing any more on animals! I wish I had never gone there, I know I'd still have my sweet dog today. Read Less

I wish I had read the reviews first. I did research but I didn't find these before I went...She has a terrible bedside manner. She seems to take it personally if you have questions like you are questioning her expertise. Very arrogant. Also, she overcharged me for some unnecessary ointments that weren't even packaged with instructions. Outdated office.. from the looks and experience of it, you would think it would cost way less. I decided to do the surgery elsewhere where I could get another procedure done at the same time and when I asked for records to be sent to the other place, she only sent the invoice and not her notes or anything helpful. She may be a good doctor but there is something off with her and I think another doc would be a better choice. Read Less

Our experience with Dr Gail and her staff was great. We had to take our dog in to have her eye checked for a non healing ulcer. Dr Gail was so nice and explained to us, with great detail, as to why this was occurring. I knew from the first visit, as nervous as I was, that our dog was in the best of care. She gave us a medicine regimen before deciding if we would need to move forward with a procedure. We were nervous as we have never gone through something like this before. The staff was comforting. To hear that we were not alone in this and that they would walk us through this whole experience meant so much to us. In hindsight, we should have gone there sooner to start on those specific medications. They seemed to really work. After a week, my dog's eye was almost healed. I appreciate that Dr Gail is weening her of the meds slowly just to play it safe. The cost for check ups are very reasonable. The meds, however, can be a little steep but seem way more effective than those prescribed by a regular vet (in our case anyway). Between the care and treatment, rest assured, you are getting your money's worth. I would highly recommend Atlanta Vet. Eye Clinic. The office is nice and clean. The staff is very welcoming. Appointments seem relatively easy to get. Read Less

I hope anyone wanting services from Dr. Gail-Powell Johnson will do their research BEFORE they make an appointment. I did not (and I usually do). I was desperate. After two "regular" vets saw my dog and she continued to have a cloudy eye that was bothering her, I made an appointment with Atlanta Vet Eye Clinic. I was told $150-$180 for the office visit alone. Is "dry eye" the ONLY diagnosis this doctor has to proffer (judging from other reviews here)? WATCH out and ask for medications that can be filled by a human pharmacist. She wanted to charge me $40 for a small tube of ointment that I got at WalMart for $4 (1,000% markup!). She charged $36 for another prescription that WalMart carries for $16. After 4 days of administering six different types of medications for an alleged "dry eye" diagnosis, my dog's eye still looks the same, if not worse. I had experience with Dr. Susan Winston (who is now retired), an ophthalmologic vet, with other dogs I had, and she was fabulous. I gave this review two stars because the office was clean, the receptionist very nice and efficient, but I do not believe Dr. Powell gave a proper diagnosis of "dry eye" for my dog's ailment. BTW: she charged me $10 per pill (times 7 pills -- $77) for a medication that a regular vet would charge about $30 for. VERY disappointed with her rate of markup on the meds. Also, she has not called for a follow-up to find out if my dog was improving at all or if there was any sign of allergic reaction to any of the SIX medications she prescribed for the "dry eye." Try GVS in Gwinnett County if you need a good professional group of specialized DVMs, or UGA in Athens (as one reviewer suggested). Powell HAS gone down on her recheck fee (maybe because she read some reviews). It is now $55. But, really, she is marking up the meds WAY TOO MUCH and that's how she's making her money. It was interesting to learn on here that she is NOT certified. I guess that explains why she does NOT require a Vet referral for her services. After a complete week of using the medicine (6 of them) regiment prescribed by Dr. Powell, my dog's eye is at least the same if not worse. My dog has been wearing an e-collar and been pampered to the max for 6 days, and she is not better. Read Less

She is a knowledgeable Vet, I must admit, but she has a greed for for money. Yes you will walk out with a big bill, but that is ok if it's worth it. Let me example why IT IS NOT below I was really worry that my dog would lose his eye and went to this Dr Powell Because Dearborn Hospital is like down the street when my dog was there for his eye problem, my stupid vet at Dearborn recommended me there. It was late, close to closing of all vets. They did tell me there was UGA which they are certified, but they are in Athens, which is very far from me. Going to Dr Powell was maybe God's way of Punishing me for being lazy and not travel to Athens. I was also panicking that I can't see a eye vet on the same day besides me being lazy. Dearborn told me she is not certified, but she's good. UGA has all CERTIFIED ophthalmologist So I went there and initial impression is that she is very knowledgeable and she spend time looking at my Dog. I was thinking well worth the money. But long story short, her prices is OUTRAGOUS. $150 for a checkup...FINE, you are a expect we pay extra for expect, but the prices of her medicine is crazy and not the best for your dog. She charge me $50-$60 a bottle of antibiotics that's $4 at walmart and less than $20 online. Fine..if it's the best out there for my dog, I'll pay extra to have it on hand right away. But this is the main problem those medicine that she sells you is not the best there are for your dog and thank god my dog had a problem when Dr Powell was away for vacation. I went to an emergency animal hospital and the GREAT vet called UGA (University of Georgia Animal Hospital) and I was schedule to see an ophthalmologist. After I went there I found out all the medicine that Dr Powell Sold me for was OUTRAGOUS in prices and was of poor quality. For the $50 antibiotics I pay her I could have gotten the higher quality that UGA prescribe my dog. I know because the same Walmart sold me both medicine. $4 for Dr Powell's which again she charge $50 for, and $50 for a higher grade. That was one out of 5 medicine that she sold me. In the end my visit was $700 for the first visit and you guess it, it's for overprice medicine. UGA charge less $100 for the initial visit for ophthalmologist and $50 for rechecks. Dr Powell charge $75 for rechecks. Just letting you know. REMEMBER my review here is not base on money, but of ethics. How can one charge $50 for a $4 bottle and why not prescribe the best when this dog is ABOUT TO LOSE HIS EYE. She is not there for your pet. She is there for the money. What UGA did was prescribe the medicine that my dog truely needs. Remember one thing UGA vets works there and would give you the best in opinion for their expertise. Dr Powell is running a business like any money hungry business people. Trust me it's not about the money, I gave UGA like $3000 for my dog, Trust me I broke, I had to borrow money to pay the bills. So it's not the money I'm complaining about. I usually don't like to write reviews, because I don't have much time BUT I have to write this one, because I'm a PET LOVER and I don't want someone to abandon theirs pet's eye for seeing an outrageous bill by the vet.. The Bill don't have to be that high if you go to the right vet. My advice, if you can wait. GO TO UGA. Much better. Where is a team of experts is not there for your money. Tell your vet to call UGA for an ophthalmologist, they have doctors on call and they will tell you if you can wait or not. Trust me most of the time you can wait because your vet will explain the situation to the ophthalmologist and they can access if it can wait or not. My dog's inside of the eye went outside a little and the ophthalmologist said he can wait a night so she can schedule all the needed staff to perform the surgery and she was DEAD RIGHT. Again I am writing this review because I don't want PET Owners that has a financial hardship to abandon their love one's eye. I hope DR Powell Read Less

This doctor is absolutely RUDE. the last post couldn't be more accurate. she is loud, abusive and doesn't like to be questioned. she charges insane fees and when you ask her to ballpark how much the treatment will be she gets in your face and makes you feel like your a bad person and that she has people who've been coming to her for years treating their ""babies"". well i was happy to tell her that putting a roof over me and my family's head and food on the table would most certainly come before HER fees. my first visit after all her ""tests"" was close to $600 and they never even bothered to tell me before hand that it would be that much...i was shocked and while i did pay her, i cried all the way home KNOWING that it was more than i could afford to spend. Yes, the eye drops that she recommends work and my dog is living proof. I am a VERY PARTICULAR Pet Parent and I strongly recommend Dr. Powell to all of my friends. Thank you Dr. Powell for all of your hard work.

The ONLY thing i'm glad of is that there was another person in the waiting room and they clearly heard how she behaved. Read Less
