We just lost our beloved 16 and a half year old Corgi, Darby, who had been in the expert care of Dr Fitzsimons and the rest of the amazing staff. Their knowledge, compassion, empathy, and communication surpasses any veterinary practice that we have ever used. After being overcharged and underserved at 2 other local vets, we decided to try this place.  The assistants, office staff and vet were all very friendly and the best part of all is that they did not overcharge us.  After our dog was attacked by an aggressive deer, we were nervous we were going to be charged a fortune.  Not only did they treat our dog as if she were their own, they were incredibly reasonable with the price and did not try to talk us into a bunch of crap we didn't need to get done.  We have finally found our permanent vet! I have horses, cats, birds and dogs. In all my many veterinary experiences, Dr Martinez is the #1 best. His competence in his profession and caring attitude are beyond reproach. The vet assistants are also spot on and wonderful to associate with. I love the groomer. All these people are 5 star plus plus plus. Ashley, the office manager, is rude, arrogant, condescending, irritating, talks in a degrading manner and someone that makes me cringe. The Cumming Veterinary office has called to confirm appointments for my deceased dog, has made me supply previous records three times and on and on. Other many irritating things have happened to me waiting in the overly crowded office area. I think the rest of the front office staff might be okay if she weren't the example they have to follow! I was referred to CVC on June 6th for my 6 year old tabby having first time siezure, I called them at 4 pm and they told me to come in 30 min and would work me in (they close at 6). The staff was so understanding of my fear and kind to me and my boy. Dr. Jim gave me a thorough analysis of what to expect. As it turns out he had an infected tooth and other dental problems I had no idea. Dr. Jim called me himself the next am with blood work results, I expected a tech to call but the vet called me himself. The same day staff provided a quote for surgery and scheduled for the following Tuesday (at my request). You just don't find this level of service anymore, thank you all! Read Less

My every visit confirms that I made a great decision when moving to Cumming in choosing Cumming Veterinary Clinic to care for my dogs. Dr. Martinez is knowledgeable, kind, patiently listens to my concerns (even when they’re a bit excessive ) and gives my dogs excellent medical care. He never pushes for unnecessary and costly procedures. So I know when he does make a recommendation, it is in my dog’s best interest. I also want to mention that I find the staff to be efficient, helpful, loving and sensitive to my dog’s needs and my own. We recently lost our beloved dog, Cody. They reached out with condolences and much needed hugs. I can’t say enough good things about this practice, but the most important thing I can say is that I would not go anywhere else! We have had dozens and dozens of experiences at Cumming Veterinary Clinic over the years.  I have interacted with most every employee there.  I've never felt so at ease and had such complete trust in a vet before.  -THE FRONT OFFICE STAFF- These folks can make or break a practice.  They have all been kind and as accommodating as possible.  They are competent, well trained, professional and have been flexible on scheduling.  Your call will never go to VM while the office is open.  They always follow up on my pets when they're sick.  The only time they couldn't accommodate me is when my dog was literally dying at 11AM on a Saturday and and they referred us to the emergency vet in Roswell.  They explained they close shortly and my dog will require an extensive workup and treatment.  In retrospect, I do understand this.  -THE VET TECHS-They are awesome! They're a great resource on those questions you have that don't necessarily require a vet.  Like when my new puppy chases my cat.  They gave me several tips on that and many other day to day questions.  They are gentle, yet firm when they need to be with my pets, and always explain what they do while they're doing it.  -DR. FITZSIMMONS- He is one smart guy! He helped guide us through my dog MJs cancer struggle and her death.  They put her down for us.  I received a handwritten letter from the Dr telling me we did the right thing for my MJ.  It's so hard to figure out the right time to say goodbye to a faithful friend.  That letter helped a lot.  Cats are fickle creatures.  They hide their pain and can be a diagnostician's worst nightmare.  And Dr. Fitzsimmons helped diagnose an extremely rare condition in my cat.  My kitty is one of only 3 cats in a prestigious ATL neurosurgeon's career to have surgery to repair a herniated disc.   Dr. Fitzsimmons ordered the right tests in the right order, keeping us in the boat as far as costs at each step.  The list of possible reasons why my cat was screaming at the top of his lungs like a Halloween cat, didn't want to move and had no visible injuries was LOOOOONG.  All kinds of illnesses, internal injuries.  It took him a handful of tests, blood work, kidney ultrasound. Then instinct I suppose caused him to skip a dozen other more likely causes and to go to the bottom of list to "herniated disc".  That just doesn't happen to cats.  Once he narrowed it down to a herniated disc, he "knew a guy" who could save my kitty's life.  He's seen our animals for a host of minor ailments not as serious as cancer or a spinal injury.  Cat fight injuries, stomach problems, incontinence.  You name it. He also helped us understand how my cat couldn't be an indoor/outdoor cat.  I'd always thought "cats will be cats and they're happier with access outside." He calmly explained what age cats lose night vision and that my cat, still cocky enough to think he could win any fight, was now completely blind at night and will be killed.  That was tough to accept, but his logical explanation without judgment or emotion helped us to understand.  We think the world of him.-DR.MARTINEZ- We have seen Dr Martinez several times when Dr Fitzsimmons (our "regular" vet) was booked.  (Tip: Dr. F is booked.  A lot!) We've got to know Dr. Martinez and he's a great vet too! He did our new puppy's first visit and has seen her ever since.  I truly have no preference between Dr. F and Dr. M now.  You can't lose either way.  -BOARDING- their boarding prices are reasonable and you can bring your pets toys if you like.   They will feed them whatever food they normally use.  Or you can bring your own.  One thing to be aware of, if you don't send a bed your pet will lay on a towel, not a cot.  I wish I'd known that years ago when my arthritic dog had to be boarded.  I probably wouldn't use CVC for boarding only, but I'm perfectly fine with my pets staying overnight for medical reasons.  I trust them.  It's just a facility thing.Overall, you will not find a finer group of people to look after your pet.  My husbands job might be moving to another state.  I told him "sorry babe, I can't move.  We'll never find another vet like this." We took my wife's 16.5 year old dog here recently since we just moved to the area. Amazing staff and doctors. She had a mass in her stomach that was so large and due to her age, surgery was an iffy option. Dr. Martinez gave me all the options and told me straight when I asked him to give me the straight forward opinion. Ultimately, we decided to euthanize her yesterday. Dr. FitzSimmons is an amazing person and doctor with the way he handles his job. Thank you to everyone there Pam, Brandy, Dr. Martinez and Dr. FitzSimmons for making such a painful experience as positive and smooth as can be. If you are looking for a new vet, look no further, you will not be disappointed. After our experience here, I find some of the negative reviews on here are from people who only leave negative and exaggerated reviews in general. Our 10 year old German Shepherd, Maya was recently diagnosed with cancer and I wasn't there during this process because I live in Savannah so I'm going off what my parents said and I cannot stress enough just how wonderful the doctor was with Maya and letting my dad know what the options were. He wasn't pushing us towards a specific option. He gave my dad the list of options, what would happen with each option and the really important part that I think makes them stand out is that they didn't push the surgery on us. He told my dad about the surgery and how it could possibly make her quality of life poor due to where the mass is located. He helped my parents see all the available options and let them decide on their own. Now if we would've taken her to the Vet office she used to go to which is extremely money driven, then they wouldn't have given us other options like these people did. This office is so far from being money driven and that's just one of the many reasons we love this clinic. The animal comes first at this place and that's how it should be at every vet clinic. Thank you Dr. FitzSimons for the compassion and everything else you've done for Maya and for helping my parents with this. This is a devastating thing for us to go through but we know thanks to the doctor, that we are making the right choices for Maya. We are going to enjoy the time we have left with her. Me and my daughter drove up here yesterday just so we can spend some much needed time with her and to also make more memories before the time comes to bring her in. My husband and I recently relocated to the Cumming area with our two dogs.  Our golden retriever mix dog , Sam, scratched her eye and developed an ulcer not long after we moved.  I took her to see Dr. David Martinez and I am so glad I did.  He tried a few things in the hopes that she would get better.  When she didn't, he went to great lengths to get Sam into an eye specialist and she is, hopefully, on her way to a complete recovery.  Pam, one of the techs/office staff assisting Dr. Martinez, followed up twice to be sure that the appointment with the specialist was confirmed.  Following the appointment with the specialist, Dr. Martinez personally followed up to discuss the specialist's course of treatment to make sure I didn't have any questions.  I cannot say enough good things about this practice!  Everyone we interacted with at the clinic (special kudos to Pam who went above and beyond in my opinion) has been kind, caring and diligent in providing the necessary treatment.  Moving can be very stressful and I am so relieved to have found a practice that I know will give my dogs the best care possible. Both Dr. FitzSimons and Dr. Heather Harkins are amazing.  We have had as many as 10 cats and they have helped us keep them well.  Our last cat died, but Dr. Harkins worked so hard to keep him alive.  She really cared about him and how much this was affecting me.There is not much more to add except to agree with all of the positive remarks of the other reviews.  I am totally happy with Cumming Veterinary Clinic.   The staff is wonderful!  Dr. FitzSimons is kind and willing to to work financially with patients on a case by case basis.  The office and exam rooms are spotless and they don't hesitate to refer out to a specialist if it is necessary. I first met Dr. FitzSimons a social function with some friends.  In casual conversation I asked him why he decided to become a vet and his response was along the lines of him having enough training to become an MD,  but feeling that animals were more worthy of his time than people because that's what he loves.  My sister was a vet tech and had trained me on what to look for in a vet and Jim met all of the qualifications.  I was looking for a vet at the time and even-though I lived in Norcross at the time the drive was worth it for my orange tabby cat Allie.  Later on we ended up getting two shi-tzu's and even-though we live around East Atlanta village we still make the drive because Jim is one of the best in the business. He genuinely cares about the welfare of the animals and also is able to do consults with some of the best specialists in the area when there are issues that go beyond his expertise. All of our pets are over 10 years old and still in great health and the care they receive from the crew at Cumming Veterinary is one of the reasons for that. We recently moved from the Virginia Highland neighborhood in Atlanta to Cumming. Although we've all been quite happy with this move, no one is happier than our four-legged son! We had been taking him to what is, supposedly, one of the best veterinary clinics in Atlanta, and we were always happy with our service. We planned to keep using this vet, but knew we needed to find some local options in case of emergency. Emergency eventually struck last night in the form of a horrendous ear infection that left us all without sleep, and our dog with a bloody, painful ear. We called the Cumming Veterinary Clinic first thing this morning, and they were able to work us in (to our relief). Upon arriving, the staff at the front desk was incredibly friendly and the process of getting checked in was painless. We were almost immediately taken back to an exam room, where Alyssa took a look at our pup to check his vitals. I should note that our dog is a rescue, and still quite scared of new people. Adding to that, he's 100 lbs, so it can be a stressful experience taking him new places. Alyssa knew exactly how to behave with him (e.g., no eye contact) and was quite patient. He warmed right up to her, and was taking treats from her hand in no time!Dr. FitzSimons came into the room next, and was equally great with putting our dog at ease. He was also great at speaking with us regarding our dog's condition. I've seen some vets who are lacking in people skills, but this was definitely not the case with Dr. FitzSimons. He patiently answered all of our questions, even those that were unrelated to the ear infection, and never made us feel ignorant. In fact, he went into great detail about why he felt a certain way on each topic/what the science was behind his answer, which I greatly appreciated. When we went to check out, our bill only solidified the great experience. I'm not sure how it compares to local vets, but it was less than we were paying, and we found it quite reasonable. The most telling thing about how happy we were was our answer to the question, "will you be using us as your regular vet" before we left. Yes! Read Less

We were visiting from out of state when our dog suddenly developed a large mass near his tail. Based on the previous reviewer's comments, we chose this clinic and are so happy we did! The clinic receptionist was great. We were seen within an hour of our phone call (maybe that was just pure luck!) and were seen promptly once we arrived. The hospital is AAHA-accredited, which is a MUST in our book. This ensures they follow the best practices of the American Animal Hospital Association's guidelines for everything from patient visits to surgery tactics to overall cleanliness of the hospital.Dr. Harkins-Barroso was our vet and she is awesome. She handled our dog with TLC and a confident hand, even though our big old German Shepherd was quite nervous and jumpy.  In the end, our dog's situation will require the care of a specialty clinic, which Dr. Harkins-Barroso was professional enough to refer us to. She even called in our case and set up an appointment for us. This is the sign of an excellent vet, someone who is willing to say that certain things are beyond their expertise. Any vet who willingly gives referrals to specialty clinics  with other types of surgeons is superior and truly has the patient's needs in mind. I wish we lived in the area because I would absolutely choose this clinic for my primary care provider. Oh, and their prices were very fair too. You can't be in better hands than the crew at this clinic! Read Less

Our family dog, Sadie, had been a patient of Dr. FitzSimons for years. She recently passed away in March and I can tell you that Dr. FitzSimons and his staff were the reason that she did live a very good life for so long. His team was always there for her care, always so professional and caring. When the time came to put Sadie to sleep, his staff made everything so much easier. Dr. FitzSimon's focus was on Sadie's quality of life, but also he knew how painful it was for us to lose a family member. After Sadie had been gone, my parents also received a sympathy card along with a donation in Sadie's name. In addition, when down in Florida, Sadie came down with vestibular disease, Dr. FitzSimons had Sadie to a vet he trusted in Panama City within minutes. He and his staff faxed all needed records and spoke with the vet in FL to make sure Sadie had the best care. I really can't say enough about this group. Always friendly, always professional, always sensitive, and so knowledgeable. I typically do not recommend places - but hands down would send anyone to this clinic. Read Less

Dr. Martinez is knowledgeable, kind, patiently listens to my concerns (even when they’re a bit excessive ) and gives my dogs excellent medical care. I also want to mention that I find the staff to be efficient, helpful, loving and sensitive to my dog’s needs and my own. We recently lost our beloved dog, Cody. We'll never find another vet like this." Our 10 year old German Shepherd, Maya was recently diagnosed with cancer and I wasn't there during this process because I live in Savannah so I'm going off what my parents said and I cannot stress enough just how wonderful the doctor was with Maya and letting my dad know what the options were. Dr. FitzSimons is the best Vet, he is so understanding, helpful and very knowledgeable. I feel qualified to say this as I have raised and showed dogs and have dealt with Veterinarians all my adult life. His help on the three dogs I have brought to him has been amazing. The staff is so talented and helpful which make trips so much easier. I recommend them when ever I can, and I appreciate it being a AAHA hospital. Read Less

I just called to see if I could purchase nexgard. A flea and tick pill and they would not sell me that without a wellness check up! Come on! It's flea and tick Meds!!!! That is just bad customer service! I love my vet and im very happy there, but I did not want to drive across town for a quick flea and tick purchase before groomers in the morning. The girl on the phone did not care about anything like asking me if I had had an updated vet record (if that is important for 25.00 a pill flea control????). I would not walk through the door of this place with my pets, Read Less

I've been taking my Welsh  Corgi there for the last 7 years. They are highly professional and very accommodating. I don't know how they do it but my dog gets all excited when he realizes that he is at the vet. They all know him and spoil him rotten. And I don't think that it's because he is so personable, but I feel that they really care. They take practicing veterinarian medicine to the highest level. Kudos to Dr FitzSimons and his entire crew.

Read Less
