Stopped going there in late 2016 or 2017 after a myriad of issues I had. Dr. Nelson is condescending. Some of the front desk staff is rude. Unreturned calls numerous times. Failure to explain how medication worked, while still letting me give it to my dog, eventually found out that I dropped a few hundred dollars on it to find out "If it hasn't started working for her yet, it's not going to work". Gee... thanks. Late Spring/early Summer 2016, took my corgi in for a teeth cleaning and tooth extraction, and when I picked him up I found out they did a bunch of other tests and vaccinations that I didn't agree to prior to dropping him off. So in one day I accumulated $1000 of bills. I settled up my bill THAT day via half on Care Credit card, and half on a payment program THEY offered, called PaymentBanc. So this was about May 2016, and the bill never hit the PaymentBanc enrollment until Sept of 2016. Then fast forward to early 2017, I started receiving letters from their office (not even phone calls, letters), saying I needed to make payments to his bill to the tune of $450-ish dollars or they would send me to collections. I called their office and reminded them I was on their PaymentBanc enrollment and they apologized and claimed to have put a note in the system. Then I received a second letter, even more scathing than the first that read as follows, "We are very disturbed by the inaction you have shown in settling your account. We would prefer to work with you and keep you as a friend and client. However, if you do not respond to this last and final request to clear your account, you will force us to either turn this matter over to our collection agency or take this matter to the District Court. To keep your account in good standing, we MUST receive your payment within the next 10(ten) days. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact me immediately." Not signed by anyone, just "Sincerely, ______ Averill Animal Hopsital "Your current balance is $444.05". At the time i received this letter from them, I signed into my PaymentBanc account and it told me I only had roughly $177 left to pay. I was FUMING. I checked the mail late that day, or else I would have called their office and given them a piece of my mind. I did call the next day and reminded them about my payment plan with them, to which they apologized again. But seriously... how many times does that have to happen??? Keep your records straight and then you won't have to piss off your clients. I went in to the clinic not too long after this incident and got copies of all of my dogs' records and jumped ship. STAY AWAY! I never made a complaint at the time because I was just so over them, but I came across the letter again today while organizing and decided it was worth mentioning.

I have been long time customer of Averill Animal Hospital, however the past couple to 5 years they have changed staff more often and their business practice has seemed to be more about the $$$$ than the pet. They charge more than other vets in the area for checkups or emergencies if they FEEL like working you in. I have had to leave them after several bad experiences. It was sad too after so many good years with them. Something changed, I would no longer recommend this as a place to take your pet, unless you are made of money and can wait. Marietta Vet Clinic is a wonderful alternative (only 2.5 miles away), the doctors and staff there remind me of the Averill of old days. The YELP ratings speak for themselves.

I have been going to Averill animal hospital for several years. The staff are always kind, compassionate and patient whether I am there with a very sick animal or just picking up flea and tick medicine. Dr. Nelson always takes the time to explain and provide the options for me to make an informed decision. I love taking my pets there!

Always a pleasant experience with Dr Nelson. I find he sticks to the facts and provides the right care for your dog. I've visited other vets in the past that provide to much care just to make an extra buck. Not the case here. Very pleasant to work with and reasonably priced .

I'm an old time cat owner, but this was the first time for me to go to the vet. My male Tabby was getting his first exam. This being my first time, I didn't know what to expect. I couldn't have been happier with the love and respect they showed Cinnamon and me. I was worried about my baby. Everything is fine. They answered all my concerns. It was a part of my boy's exam.
I want to compliment the desk staff, too. There was never a question that they had my interest at heart too. These people are professional and they care.

I took my dog to this hospital because after taking him to the Smyrna animal hospital and having a wonderful experience two days before. He seemed to get worse the next day and this place was much closer to my house so I took him there. The front desk people were very very very nice. The gentleman who sat with us as we waited for the doctor was very very very nice. What I immediately realized when the doctor walked (Averill) in was he was quite cranky and didn't seem to have any compassion at all. He talked all over me and he moved very slowly as he watched my dog wince in pain on the floor in pain. My dog then Peed on the floor (which he never does), He made no attempt to soothe any of his pain he just watched him which frustrated me. He made no comment about anything no insight on anything and simply said "yep he's in pain". So I begin ask him what are we going to do anout it and he says well I need to watch him walk some more. Because he was giving me no insight or input and not speaking to me at all and I was just standing there trying to figure out what was happening, and my dog was in pain, I began to get frustrated and I asked him how long are we gonna Watch him hop around in pain? I already know he has a slipped disc I just wanna know how we can make this better. He practically yelled at me that your dog has a serious neurological condition and if you don't like the way I do things you might want to take him back to Smyrna animal Hospital.I was in shock, I just stared at him for a while because I couldn't believe the way he was acting. I got the impression this is an old cranky guy who's been doing things the way he wants to for 50 years and nobody's going to tell him anything differently and if you don't like the way he treats you or your animal you can get the heck out. That's basically what he told me.He got very frustrated with me and scolded me for questioning his tactics and then told me it might be better if I took my business elsewhere. As I gladly picked up my dog to take him all the way back to Smyrna Hospital I told him his bedside manner was really the worst and he arrogantly responded to me "I don't have to have bedside manner". He repeated that I should take my dog someplace where I feel more comfortable and when I said I will, like a 10-year-old child he responded "good please do that". He was petty , small, rude, and unprofessional.This was undeniably my worst experience with any veterinary professional, and I use professional very lightly. I gladly drove 10 miles back to Smyrna hospital, where they treated me with respect and treated my dog like he mattered. I will never again grace this establishment with my presence, they are the worst.

My experience with other Vets never proved to be a good experience for my cat, Mr. Honey. However, when we arrived at Averill Animal Hospital with an unknown issue.....Mr. Honey was completely comfortable and our needs were met without delay. Then on our second visit, same story. You'd have to know my cat to know how remarkable that is.....he has nothing to do with anyone much. The care we received at Averill gets a 5-star from me and I rarely give a review, and rarer still, a 5-star. Awesome experience with the staff, Vet, care, concern......

I had my 2 dogs boarded here for a 4 day vacation I was going on and they told me I needed to have all kinds of vaccinations and flu shots for my dogs even though they had updated vaccinations from my previous vet (back in California prior to our move here) After all was said and done I paid $1000 for the boarding and vaccinations and some medication for one of my dogs. They told me one of my dogs was going to need cyclosporine eye drops for the rest of her life so I bought another bottle to keep on hand. $87 for a 5 ml bottle! When I got a second opinion I was told I don't need to give her these drops that I could use OTC rewetting drops which cost $15. Of course when I went to return them they said by law they can't take them back. The drops were unopened and still sealed. Unless you want to be gouged don't go to this vet!

We have been with Averill since 1994. They have been with us through the lives of 3 of our previous dogs. One of our dogs had extensive and very uncommon issues (a lower mandible extraction!). After this operation she had a quality life, mostly with the help and guidance from Averill Animal Hospital. Their attention and kindness through the illness was so incredible. All of our pets lived to the full extent of their life expectancies, even with a few situations along the way. I am planning to get another dog soon and would NEVER go anywhere else for it's care.

Our dog is over 15 years old. She could hardly get around. Dr. Nelson and his staff went in to action after a kidney issues were thought to causing the issue. After treating her for a couple days it has been amazing our well she is now, perhaps some divine intervention as well.
Now this has led to having to get IV fluid every 5 days and this is another area where the entire staff has went the extra mile with kindness as well as assisting with the gas up every week. We must be there more than any other patient, but are treated like royalty

I chose Averill because it's very close to my house. However, I was never truly satisfied with the service there. I saw Dr. Nelson twice for less than 10 mins each time and he didn't seem too enthused to be there or answer my questions. I never got a reminder for my cat's last vaccine booster. Now, I know that part of the responsibility to schedule the next appointment is on me as the pet owner. However, I still didn't receive any reminders about scheduling a next visit. When I went back to get a copy of my cat's vaccine records recently, I was given a single sheet of paper stating that my cat was nearly a year due on her vaccine boosters. I thought I was clear in what I needed from the front desk staff. It took my new vet calling them to get what we needed from them. The only reason this place is getting any stars from me is because their vet tech staff are hospitable and friendly. Other than that, there are better vets out there who don't charge so much and will treat you better as a pet owner.

After using services at Averill, I realized I was dealing with a shady business, if not downright a dishonest visit. My negative experiences include deceptive boarding practices, inexperienced professional services, and outrageous prices.I boarded three cats and specifically stated I wanted three separate cages for the cats. I was charged for three separate cages but later found out the cats were all stuffed into one cage. I found out when I began questioning a younger staff member about their boarding practices. When an older staff member overheard our conversation, she ran over, told the younger girl to go away, then the older staff member became arrogant and nasty with me. Obviously, they had something to hide, and her dishonesty was easy to see. Never ever have I boarded animals in the Atlanta area where the boarding facility made the claim that nail clipping and a shampoo were required items for boarding. This is either an effort to eliminate the animal of fleas from their infested facility and/or just another way to shake down customers for additional money.When I pay for veterinarian services, I expect to have the services of a qualified veterinarian. Instead, my animals were often treated by inexperienced veterinarian interns. I found this out by questioning the veterinarian students. This is deception, and clients should be clearly informed of this BEFORE treatment, or an attending vet should be in the examining room supervising the student vet. Averill's prices are way above the average for the Atlanta area. Shop around and compare prices, and you will agree. I only once saw the actual Dr Averill, and he did not seem very enthused about his work, preferring instead to jabber about non veterinarian topics. I have since terminated my relationship with Averill Animal Hospital. There are many fine veterinarians to chose from in the Atlanta metro area, Averill Animal Hospital is not one of them. Spend your money elsewhere.

Scam scam scam Way too expensive they wanted $260 for two or three shots for my dog and I went to Marietta vet clinic which is brand-new clean as a whistle amazing people for $97 so this place is a rip off I've been going to them for two years getting ripped off all the cool girls were working in the office are gone now may because they weren't getting paid enough but I don't like this place , they had a teeth cleaning deal on a sign for 150 but when I went to go get my teeth cleaned they told me was going to be 235 so it was a total scam

WHen my cat Yoda was ill (and eventually passed away) they were realistic in their assessments and in fact discouraged me from spending excess money that they felt was unlikely to do a whole lot to extend her happy life.

This place has a nice exterior: the staff are friendly and accommodating, the facility itself is clean and cared after. But, no one goes to a vet expecting just that. This place robs you. Vet bills are pricey, that was to be expected, but $600+ for a non-extensive blood test, fluids, a shot of penicillin, a prescription of antibiotics (which they offered the day following our visit), and no conclusive results... No. Unacceptable. They had the audacity to suggest returning so they could perform more blood tests, potentially an x-ray, and even an MRI! It was even given an estimate of "thousands, maybe 8k." And that, even after all that, they still probably wouldn't know. What were we to infer from that prognosis, doc? Ugh.For a little LESS than what we paid here, another vet in a nearby town had given our sick pup a full set of x-rays, studied her stool, blood tests, fluids, and a shot that we were told would last ten days. They have narrowed the symptoms and tests results down to some sort of infection and an enlarged intestine due to gas, the pain from which was probably what was keeping her immobile and caused her to yelp and lash out at us intermittently.I was going to give Averill 2 stars, but you need to know that when caring for a loved one you should should expect quality results for what you pay for. If you want that, PLEASE go somewhere else. Don't waste your time or money at this place if you can get everything done at a lower price elsewhere!

I'm an old time cat owner, but this was the first time for me to go to the vet. My male Tabby was getting his first exam. This being my first time, I didn't know what to expect. I couldn't have been happier with the love and respect they showed Cinnamon and me. I was worried about my baby. Everything is fine. They answered all my concerns. It was a part of my boy's exam.
I want to compliment the desk staff, too. There was never a question that they had my interest at heart too. These people are professional and they care.

I took my dog to this hospital because after taking him to the Smyrna animal hospital and having a wonderful experience two days before. He seemed to get worse the next day and this place was much closer to my house so I took him there. The front desk people were very very very nice. The gentleman who sat with us as we waited for the doctor was very very very nice. What I immediately realized when the doctor walked (Averill) in was he was quite cranky and didn't seem to have any compassion at all. He talked all over me and he moved very slowly as he watched my dog wince in pain on the floor in pain. My dog then Peed on the floor (which he never does), He made no attempt to soothe any of his pain he just watched him which frustrated me. He made no comment about anything no insight on anything and simply said "yep he's in pain". So I begin ask him what are we going to do anout it and he says well I need to watch him walk some more. Because he was giving me no insight or input and not speaking to me at all and I was just standing there trying to figure out what was happening, and my dog was in pain, I began to get frustrated and I asked him how long are we gonna Watch him hop around in pain? I already know he has a slipped disc I just wanna know how we can make this better. He practically yelled at me that your dog has a serious neurological condition and if you don't like the way I do things you might want to take him back to Smyrna animal Hospital.I was in shock, I just stared at him for a while because I couldn't believe the way he was acting. I got the impression this is an old cranky guy who's been doing things the way he wants to for 50 years and nobody's going to tell him anything differently and if you don't like the way he treats you or your animal you can get the heck out. That's basically what he told me.He got very frustrated with me and scolded me for questioning his tactics and then told me it might be better if I took my business elsewhere. As I gladly picked up my dog to take him all the way back to Smyrna Hospital I told him his bedside manner was really the worst and he arrogantly responded to me "I don't have to have bedside manner". He repeated that I should take my dog someplace where I feel more comfortable and when I said I will, like a 10-year-old child he responded "good please do that". He was petty , small, rude, and unprofessional.This was undeniably my worst experience with any veterinary professional, and I use professional very lightly. I gladly drove 10 miles back to Smyrna hospital, where they treated me with respect and treated my dog like he mattered. I will never again grace this establishment with my presence, they are the worst.

My experience with other Vets never proved to be a good experience for my cat, Mr. Honey. However, when we arrived at Averill Animal Hospital with an unknown issue.....Mr. Honey was completely comfortable and our needs were met without delay. Then on our second visit, same story. You'd have to know my cat to know how remarkable that is.....he has nothing to do with anyone much. The care we received at Averill gets a 5-star from me and I rarely give a review, and rarer still, a 5-star. Awesome experience with the staff, Vet, care, concern......

I had my 2 dogs boarded here for a 4 day vacation I was going on and they told me I needed to have all kinds of vaccinations and flu shots for my dogs even though they had updated vaccinations from my previous vet (back in California prior to our move here) After all was said and done I paid $1000 for the boarding and vaccinations and some medication for one of my dogs. They told me one of my dogs was going to need cyclosporine eye drops for the rest of her life so I bought another bottle to keep on hand. $87 for a 5 ml bottle! When I got a second opinion I was told I don't need to give her these drops that I could use OTC rewetting drops which cost $15. Of course when I went to return them they said by law they can't take them back. The drops were unopened and still sealed. Unless you want to be gouged don't go to this vet!

The doctors explain things to you and let you know how to keep your dog healthy. They go out of their way to work with your schedule. I am very glad I chose Averill when we moved to this area.

We have been with Averill since 1994. They have been with us through the lives of 3 of our previous dogs. One of our dogs had extensive and very uncommon issues (a lower mandible extraction!). After this operation she had a quality life, mostly with the help and guidance from Averill Animal Hospital. Their attention and kindness through the illness was so incredible. All of our pets lived to the full extent of their life expectancies, even with a few situations along the way. I am planning to get another dog soon and would NEVER go anywhere else for it's care.

Our dog is over 15 years old. She could hardly get around. Dr. Nelson and his staff went in to action after a kidney issues were thought to causing the issue. After treating her for a couple days it has been amazing our well she is now, perhaps some divine intervention as well.
Now this has led to having to get IV fluid every 5 days and this is another area where the entire staff has went the extra mile with kindness as well as assisting with the gas up every week. We must be there more than any other patient, but are treated like royalty

I saw Dr. Nelson twice for less than 10 mins each time and he didn't seem too enthused to be there or answer my questions. I never got a reminder for my cat's last vaccine booster. Now, I know that part of the responsibility to schedule the next appointment is on me as the pet owner. However, I still didn't receive any reminders about scheduling a next visit. When I went back to get a copy of my cat's vaccine records recently, I was given a single sheet of paper stating that my cat was nearly a year due on her vaccine boosters. I thought I was clear in what I needed from the front desk staff. It took my new vet calling them to get what we needed from them. The only reason this place is getting any stars from me is because their vet tech staff are hospitable and friendly. Other than that, there are better vets out there who don't charge so much and will treat you better as a pet owner.

After using services at Averill, I realized I was dealing with a shady business, if not downright a dishonest visit. My negative experiences include deceptive boarding practices, inexperienced professional services, and outrageous prices.I boarded three cats and specifically stated I wanted three separate cages for the cats. I was charged for three separate cages but later found out the cats were all stuffed into one cage. I found out when I began questioning a younger staff member about their boarding practices. When an older staff member overheard our conversation, she ran over, told the younger girl to go away, then the older staff member became arrogant and nasty with me. Obviously, they had something to hide, and her dishonesty was easy to see. Never ever have I boarded animals in the Atlanta area where the boarding facility made the claim that nail clipping and a shampoo were required items for boarding. This is either an effort to eliminate the animal of fleas from their infested facility and/or just another way to shake down customers for additional money.When I pay for veterinarian services, I expect to have the services of a qualified veterinarian. Instead, my animals were often treated by inexperienced veterinarian interns. I found this out by questioning the veterinarian students. This is deception, and clients should be clearly informed of this BEFORE treatment, or an attending vet should be in the examining room supervising the student vet. Averill's prices are way above the average for the Atlanta area. Shop around and compare prices, and you will agree. I only once saw the actual Dr Averill, and he did not seem very enthused about his work, preferring instead to jabber about non veterinarian topics. I have since terminated my relationship with Averill Animal Hospital. There are many fine veterinarians to chose from in the Atlanta metro area, Averill Animal Hospital is not one of them. Spend your money elsewhere.

WHen my cat Yoda was ill (and eventually passed away) they were realistic in their assessments and in fact discouraged me from spending excess money that they felt was unlikely to do a whole lot to extend her happy life.

This place has a nice exterior: the staff are friendly and accommodating, the facility itself is clean and cared after. But, no one goes to a vet expecting just that. This place robs you. Vet bills are pricey, that was to be expected, but $600+ for a non-extensive blood test, fluids, a shot of penicillin, a prescription of antibiotics (which they offered the day following our visit), and no conclusive results... No. Unacceptable. They had the audacity to suggest returning so they could perform more blood tests, potentially an x-ray, and even an MRI! It was even given an estimate of "thousands, maybe 8k." And that, even after all that, they still probably wouldn't know. What were we to infer from that prognosis, doc? Ugh.For a little LESS than what we paid here, another vet in a nearby town had given our sick pup a full set of x-rays, studied her stool, blood tests, fluids, and a shot that we were told would last ten days. They have narrowed the symptoms and tests results down to some sort of infection and an enlarged intestine due to gas, the pain from which was probably what was keeping her immobile and caused her to yelp and lash out at us intermittently.I was going to give Averill 2 stars, but you need to know that when caring for a loved one you should should expect quality results for what you pay for. If you want that, PLEASE go somewhere else. Don't waste your time or money at this place if you can get everything done at a lower price elsewhere!
