On the Friday that the snow came in about 2 weeks ago, we dropped our bulldog off at Dr. Best’s office. He was to stay for 3 days, and also have his skin checked because he has terrible allergies and also his stomach because he was starting to have serious problems with vomiting. We were called during that time and told that some of his teeth needed to be removed. We said yes, but also asked about our initial concerns, which were dismissed in favor of focusing on his teeth. They kept our dog for an additional 2 nights to do the oral surgery. When we picked him up post oral surgery, he was 5 pounds lighter than when we dropped him off (despite their insistence that he ate normally while he was there) and his skin looked horrible. He has white fur, and the skin beneath was bright pink, inflammed, and he had black spots/scabs on his back that are still there now and weren’t there before we left him in their care. Instead of addressing either of these things when we asked about it, we were given a pain medication, an antibiotic, and an anti-inflammatory that was supposed to help remedy all of it. It also cost us over a grand.
A few days after we got him home, he began vomiting up every single thing he was eating, within 5 minutes of eating it. We called the vet back. I spoke to the practice manager who patronized me over the phone, but said we could bring him back in. We did, and he received an allergy and nausea shot from Dr. Best, both at $90. He was fine for 2 days. And then around the holiday, he began vomiting again. Everything he ate. Constantly. He couldn’t even keep down rice. The only thing he could barely stomach was bread and broth. He wasn’t drinking water, either. Any time we called or asked about this issue, it was dismissed as allergies. Not once did they mention even looking at his stomach. We took him back to Dr. Best for a THIRD time after insisting on some type of X-ray or ultrasound, afterwhich Dr. Best felt his stomach and said that “maybe something was wrong with his stomach.” Obviously. After 5 days of boarding, surgery, and 2 pointless follow up visits, our dog was finally referred to a GI specialist. Dr. Best assurred us that his x-rays were going to be sent over to the specialist within the hour for our dog’s appointment today. Needless to say, they were never sent.
And after an ultrasound at the internal medicine vet, we discovered that our dog most likely had a stomach ulcer as a result of the medication he was given for his oral surgery (we were never spoken to about potential side effects, and it was never mentioned in any of our follow up visits or calls to Dr. Best). We’ve since been given an 8-day, $45 pill version of the shot that Dr. Best charged us $90 for, and told us that our dog would need once per month.
Dr. Best and his staff aren’t interested in doing the detective work required for a dog that needs medical care beyond flea and tick treatment or tapeworms — all of which can be treated by just a simple round of medication. They chalked up our dog’s persistent, violent vomiting, weight loss and bleeding skin to allergies without even considering another potential cause. It cost us nearly $2000 and multiple visits to be sent to someone who could actually help. They were patronizing and dismissive about all of our concerns. And when we tried to communicate something from the front desk staff to Dr. Best, it was rarely delivered. Our dog was also much worse off AFTER we kennelled him there.
I am deeply disappointed, angry, and concerned about the way Dr. Best and his staff treated us, and more importantly, our dog, who is a member of our family.
We will never be taking our dog back, and will be encouraging our friends and family to also seek vet care elsewhere. Read Less
