I had a great experience when I used Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital on a Sunday as I was concerned my dog was bleeding after being treated by my vet for eating ibuprofen.  The staff was great!  The vet checked my dog over and gave me several options that included my vet later in the week.  I thought she took into consideration the cost.  I would use them again if needed.  I have used other emergency vets in the Atlanta area and thought they over-treated and it was costly.  I felt my dog got great care at Dekalb Gwinnett ER and again they considered the cost. No way, find a veterinarian that cares. My dog was dying and did not even receive oxygen or an intravenous line of fluids. He was there for hours before he passed. The only thing the vet had for my crying family was $1500 in tests. He died before she could swindle more than $300 out of me. My baby boy was definitely a family member and we are still hurt over the lost. Please take your pet to a Vet that actually cares for animals and not your pocketbook. The location is absolutely ridiculous too, it took me ten minutes to figure out how to get in the parking lot. I'm definitely going to look further into this matter. Read Less

Wouldn't go back and would only warn that the barrage of testing that they had in mind for our cat was very high priced given the fact that the next day at our regular vet, our cat found comfort and a start to wellness with a antibiotic; a steroid to reduce some congestion from environmental issues for this time of year....along with IV saline to re-hydrate our cat.  THAT is what we came in for....not to be sold on a full kitty work-up when the obvious signs SHOULD have been the clue as to what to do.The vet at our usual clinic chose NOT to try any of the blood drawing...as it was her opinion that even a 3CC draw given the dehydration, elevated heart rate could trigger an event that could prove fatal....and absolutely not a necessity for the moment.  If we had agreed to the multiple testing the procedures may have been too much for our cat's condition at the time of the exam.  None of that possibility was mentioned. Our vet asked us to take our little feline gal "Lucy Noel" home and let her adjust, heal up a bit and take in more water via an needle-less syringe that she enjoys getting a "water fountain drink."Experience appears to make the difference in these matters and between the two professional vets....the vet that wanted to be assured that Lucy was up to the task before considering it is the only prudent choice.A smoke and mirrors evening with a projected punch list of recommended tests and procedures that appeared outrageously expensive and unnecessarily risky for an elderly cat with elevated heart rate and dehydration as a factor to her problem of walking instability. She's getting around FINE this evening less than 24 hours after our visit to this VCA facility and less than 12 hours after visiting our regular vet facility.  Our complaint was instability walking, some vomiting and diarrhea.  Now that she's hydrated, under way to recover her health....she's walking fine, eating and drinking fine for less than 1/10th the proposed testing that may have killed her at the time of her visit to VCA.Since it was my wife's birthday and her preciously favorite cat of 18 years....the prudent thing to do was pay the overpriced office visit (which was $35 more than our vet visit with someone with 35+ years of experience) and run like hell. Last night our family dog of 8 years, very suddenl, collapsed. I took him into VCA and was a hysterical mess by the time we arrived. I was upset and very emotional but even despite my actions, the doctor and staff handled everything professionally and took care of my baby as best they could at that point. I would just like to thank the staff for their help, care, understanding and compassion when it came to my loss. We are still heartbroken but their words gave me comfort that my dog was in great hands. Thank you all very much... Read Less

We highly recommend this animal hospital to anyone in need of emergency treatment for their pet. We rushed Baxter, our one year old Goldendoodle, in this past weekend for an allergic reaction to his annual vaccines. This was the second time at this facility for him. The previous time he was in due to a gastrointestinal issue. Both times he was seen by Dr. Masterson. We were extremely pleased with the attention she gave him on both visits. Her approach to veterinary medicine gave us the confidence that Baxter was in the best of hands. Both times her diagnosis and treatments restored Baxter's health within a short period of time. Simply put, the level of care given to our boy far exceeded our expectations. We found the rest of the staff was very helpful, friendly, and competent as well. Great job! Read Less

In the past, I have had 1 great experience at Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital (when my dog was injured and needed surgery Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Hospital did a fantastic job - very carrying and helpful), and 1 horrible experience (when this same dog needed put down and a different doctor wanted me to spend $$$$$'s of dollars for a dog that was suffering and needed put down - the doctor just wanted me to spend more money and then when I chose not to made me feel horrible that I was being uncaring/unsensistive to "my" pet).  Seems the facility was being pressured to scalp people of money in the pretense that it was best for their pets.  My own vet called me the very next day to reassure me that I had made the correct decision for my pet.....Well, several years later I needed to go to Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital for another dog of mine that was dying....  the care I received this time was absolutely amazing.  I contribute it all to Dr. Poppy Masterson.  She was so helpful, so compassionate, and so truly a blessing to be with to help me through this emotional time.  Hands down she was awesome.  I felt like she was part of the family by the end of our visit.  It's never easy having to take your loved one/pet to the emergency hospital especially if you know it's time to put them down, but if you do need to go to Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital hopefully Dr. Poppy Masterson will be the doctor on staff.  Know with her by your side you will get the best care for your pet and have someone who supports you and will help you to make the right choices for your pet. Tonight you were brought a severely injured feral cat, and you refused treatment. Animal Control, to whom you referred the rescuer, was closed and no one answered repeated calls made. You again refused to treat the animal, who will likely die a horrible death tonight tortured with pain from her injuries.Updated a month later: the poor cat is still suffering because rather than being treated, it escaped and is still dragging a maimed limb, which is slowly coming off. You could've saved it 30 or more days of suffering; now we are trying to recapture an even more scared animal. Read Less

My Doberman was bitten twice by a copperhead one evening. I was a total mess when I took him to VCA DeKalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital. The staff there was incredibly kind to both my dog and me. Everything was explained to me very clearly, and they were very patient with me when I asked a million questions! I thought the rates were reasonable, and they allowed me to bring my dog back for a second round of blood tests, free of charge. I was extremely satisfied with the care my dog received, and I am so thankful to have such a wonderful emergency vet close to my home.Read Less

On their website, they said that they take in injured wildlife for treatment and send them out to rehabilitation.  It's a surrender type situation so they rely on donations for care of these animals.  My daughters brought to me a wild bird with a broken leg.  As animal lovers, we read stories of birds with broken legs being mended and rehab'd all the time.  I thought I was in luck when I found this place for the poor bird.  If I'd known what they were going to do then I would NOT have taken the bird here.  The "vet", I am supposing, decided that it would be more "humane" to euthanize the poor thing instead of treating it and finding a foster rehab home for it.  I think the issue was that they just didn't want to deal with it and since no one was paying for treatment it was cheaper and easier for them to kill it.  I feel awful because I thought I was doing the right thing by bringing this injured, wild bird to a caring vet.  Needless to say, I will NOT be taking any animal back to this place.  Needless to say, I will NOT be making a donation.  Do not take any wild animal here that has been injured.  Call your local vet and find a good place to turn in that specializes in rehabbing it or do more research to find an authentic wildlife rehab place.  I am very disappointed and am pursuing an investigation by submitting them to the ethics board of Georgia for Veterinarians. Had to visit late one night earlier in the month when my senior cat developed a problem. We decided to put him down that night which was incredibly hard. But I felt like the doctor gave me thorough information and estimates and plenty of space to think through what to do. There were a handful of serious emergencies that came in after me, so I was there for awhile. But I guess that was okay in the end. My only concern was that it felt like it took forever for somebody to buzz open the door every time the doorbell rang. And all the rings were urgent with a pause and then "ring! ring! ring!" It IS an ER so we all were panicked. Maybe it just felt like it took awhile to open the door. But as far as care and attention, I felt like I got the best out of a very sad situation. Thanks to them for all their care. Read Less

We rushed him to VCA and they were able to take him in and prep him for surgery in a matter of minutes. The staff is EXCELLENT, very knowledgeable and friendly. In particular, the VA by the name of KYNA was terrific. It was a very sensitive situation for me and my family, and Kyna made it her business to make sure that all of our needs were met and comforted us the entire time. She answered all of our questions promptly and gave us the background on the situation and aftercare advice. I cannot speak more highly of Kyna. You can tell that she really loves what she does and she really loves and cares for animals. Due to her outstanding customer service as well as the rest of the staff's, we were able to have a pleasant experience through this difficult situation. Four years ago, the day before Thanksgiving, my 10 yr old Daschund/Chihuahua was attacked by an unleashed Pit bull. Thanks to extensive surgery performed by Dr. Hughes, she is still here today. They took great care of my dog on the night of the attack and helped calm me down with regular updates on her status. My dog woke me up today needlessly early begging for food and a walk as usual and it dawned on me how lucky I am she is even here today considering all she had been through. Read Less

Having to put a pet down is never a good experience. That said, it was within the power of these people to make that experience better for me and for my pet, but they made it worse. In October 2012, my indoor/outdoor cat was accidentally poisoned by my neighbor and when she started having seizures, I went to the first place I could find on Google. First, it is extremely hard to find their parking lot if you don't know the area; I ended up jumping out of my friend's car at the second wrong parking lot we got to and running across embankments with my cat in my arms. A client of my workplace had the same experience. When I got inside, I had to almost yell at the receptionist that my cat was having seizures to get her to pay attention to me. The doctor on staff showed very little sympathy, which might be because she is hardened from working at an emergency vet clinic, but it wasn't very helpful to me, and I was in tears nearly the entire time I was there. I wanted to write this review not because of the attitudes of the staff, but so that you would know that if you have to put your pet down at this facility THEY WON'T LET YOU BE WITH YOUR PET DURING THE EUTHANASIA PROCEDURE. Or at least they wouldn't let me. They gave me a pretty BS reason for that, which I can't remember now. I was shocked. They brought my extremely sick cat into an examination room for me to say goodbye to her. It was heartbreaking. I chose to take her body home, and they delivered her back to me wrapped up and dead in her carrier. At this point the receptionist did show some sympathy and was very sweet to me. The only other good thing was that they obviously figured out how poor I am (yes, I know you shouldn't get pets if you're poor; I had my cat for six years and recently hit some hard times) and they didn't charge me a dime. Did that make up for not being able to be with my pet while she died? Not really. I would've paid the $152 just to be there. Read Less

DON'T GO HERE! PLEASE READ. We had a nightmarish situation yesterday with our 3 month Siamese cat, Liam. He started acting sick 3 days ago, by Friday night he was refusing to eat or drink, and throwing up. By Saturday he was not moving around too much. We thought it was the napkin he'd eaten apparently Friday night and threw up Saturday morning. He was not better by yesterday (Sunday 9/16/12) so we took him to VCA Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Hospital. I was under the impression that they were top notch because of their ratings. Sadly, I didn't pay attention to the dates. All were from a few years ago, before it became corporate VCA hospital. As soon as we entered, the attitude was cold. The one member of the staff who seemed caring, a tech, disappeared as soon as she took us to a room. The attending vet tech and Dr. Kero had zero people skills and little compassion to our situation. No one had any sympathy for the unnecessary costs of their care. They did X rays and it wasn't the napkin. Turns out he had eaten a twist tie and it was lodged in his stomach! Surgery was the only option, we were devastated. Already we were paying the initial $108 plus $221 dollars more for a protein check and X-ray to a total of $329. They brought out their estimate for surgery (we'd been waiting at the hospital now for over 4 hours) and both of us started to cry. They wanted almost $3,250. We are early 20s, my girlfriend is a student and I am an actress, so like any other normal family, this is an exorbitant amount of money. Of course, in our emotional state, we thought we were going to have to go into our savings to pay. It was either have the surgery, or Liam wouldn't make it for long. Luckily we thought to call our vet and they recommended Animal Emergency Center of Sandy Springs for their excellent care and much lower costs. We left VCA Dekalb-Gwinttett Animal Hospital and rushed Liam to Sandy Springs. We called on the way and when we got there we were met with waiting attendants and calm reassurance. They waived the emergency exam fee after hearing our situation with VCA and used the X Rays we brought to proceed with his care. Their estimate for the same procedure was $1400-$1500! We paid $1486 total, almost $1200 less than VCA's LOWEST estimate. That was including his overnight, the surgery, and his medicine for recovery. The range VCA gave us for the SAME procedure was $3250-$3900! I can't believe it is legal to have a practice like this! Dr. Biddle at the Sandy Springs location has the same emergency vet board certifications that Dr. Kero at VCA has and worlds more warmth, compassion, and friendliness. We decided on surgery there as prices were in line with our vet and several other local vets. Liam had a successful surgery at 11pm last night. With the way it was stuck in his stomach (tie was already lodged in his pylorus), doing the surgery then saved his life. When I picked him up this morning, he was already well enough to transfer home instead of our vet. They did an amazing job. He has another 2 weeks of healing but he's a lucky kitten they said, he'll be okay. I hate to think what would have happened had we not been able to pay, or found another option. We would've somehow come up with the money, as I'm sure others would, even if they don't have the means. VCA Dekalb-Gwinnett Emergency Animal Hospital is cruel in their ethics, maybe good in their care, but ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER OF SANDY SPRINGS is JUST as competent, we paid less than half the price, they are so much more reasonable and caring. They were a superior example of what should be expected in animal ER care, I won't go anywhere else. I hope this helps prevent others from going through our situation, or other unfortunate ones. Don't go to this hospital, it's not worth your emotional toll or break in your finances. I BROUGHT MY 4 Y/O JACK RUSSELL, GRACE, TO VCA ON THE ADVISE OF ANSLEY VETRINARY CLINIC SINCE THEY DID NOT HAVE THE FACILITY TO RUN CERTAIN BLOOD WORK. GRACE HAD GOTTEN INTO SOME KIND OF TOXIN THAT WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN. SHE WAS A VERY SICK LITTLE GIRL. WE LEFT ANSLEY MEDICAL TO GO STRAIGHT TO VCA WITH IV AND BLOOD WORK IN HAND AFTER I HAD PAID THEM $282.00 FOR THE TREATMENT SHE ALREADY RECEIVED. ONCE I GOT TO VCA AT 5:00 I WAITED UNTIL 5:45 WHEN THE RECEPTIONIST/TECH WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LET US IN OUT OF THE RAIN. FROM THE MOMENT I GOT THEIR IT SEEMED AS IF THEY WERE JUST FOCUSED ON COST. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THE RECEPTIONIST POINTED OUT THEIR FEE JUST TO BE SEEN WAS $108. WELL LONG STORY SHORT THE TECH CAME IN AND I VOICED A CONCERN THAT I ONLY HAD A LITTLE OVER $250 CASH WITH ME AND I KNEW THAT I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE HER TO OUR REGULAR VET THE NEXT MORNING AND I HAD BEEN SEEN IN ANOTHER CLINIC THAT SENT ME WITH BLOOD WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE CHECKED ASAP TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. SHE STATED SINCE I HAD BEEN SEEN AND REFERED THERE THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THE 108.00 EXAM FEE. ONCE THE DR. CAME IN HE HAD AN ESTIMATE OF OVER $850.00 WHICH BASICLY WAS TO KEEP HER OVERNIGHT ON AN IV SHE ALREADY HAD STARTED AND FLUIDS SHE WAS ALREADY ON. AND TO RUN BLOOD WORK ON HER THAT WAS CRITICAL TO HER CARE (WHICH I HAD BROUGHT WITH ME SO THEY COULD RUN) THE COSTS OF SOME OF THESE TESTS WERE MORE THAN WHAT A HUMAN LAB WOULD CHARGE FOR EXAMPLE A CBC FOR OVER 100. COSTS 25.00 AT A WALK IN LAB. JUST BECAUSE THIS CLINIC IS AN EMERGENCY CARE CLINIC THEY ARE GOING TO GOUGE THE PET OWNER FOR EVERY NICKLE THEY CAN NO MATTER WHAT SACRIFICE THE PET HAS TO SUFFER. WHERE IS THE COMPASSION IN THIS? ONCE THE DR FOUND OUT I ONLY HAD $250. HE SAID THAT I SHOULD JUST TAKE HER HOME BECAUSE THE BLOOD WORK WAS GOING TO BE OVER $250 AND TO NOT BOTHER IF I WAS NOT GOING TO SPEND MORE TO TREAT HER. I WILL ADD THIS THOUGH, HE CAME BACK IN THE ROOM AFTER GETTING US READY TO DISCHARGE AND SAID THAT WE CAN GIVE HER SOME SUB Q FLUIDS AND A SHOT FOR NAUSIA BEFORE YOU GO SO SHE WOULD BE COMFORTABLE TILL IN THE MORNING, BUT IT WILL BE $150.00 FOR MY BILL. OF COARSE I WANT MY BABY TO BE COMFORTABLE SO I GAVE THEM $150. TO GIVE HER 250 CC'S OF IV FLUID SUB Q FROM THE IV FLUID SHE ALREADY HAD AND I HAD ALREADY PAID FOR AND SOMETHING FOR NAUSIA AND THEY'RE REDUCED EXAM FEE OF 40.00. I GOT TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE THEY DID NOT WANT ME TO LEAVE WITH ONLY PAYING $40.00 FOR NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR HER. THEY WANTED AS MUCH OF THE MONEY I HAD BEFORE I LEFT AND THAT WAS THE ATTITUDE THAT THEY EXPRESS WHEN YOU GET THERE. DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY POOR LITTLE GRACE HAD TO SUFFER. GRACE MADE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT AND WE WERE AT HER REGULAR VET THE FIRST THING THE NEXT MORNING. THEY STARTED HER BACK ON THE IV FLUIDS GIVING HER SOME POTASSIUM THAT SHE NEEDED ACCORDING TO HER BLOOD WORK ($55 TOTAL) ALTHOUGH SHE STARTED TREATMENT SHE HAD A SEIZURE AND PASSED AWAY.SO MUCH FOR COMPASSION AND HELPING A SICK OR INJURED ANIMAL... YOU BETTER HAVE YOUR CREDIT CARDS, BANK LOANS AND BORROWED MONEY WITH YOU IF YOU EVER GO TO THIS PLACE. THEY THINK SINCE THEY ARE THERE 24 HRS (WHICH THEY ARE NOT) THEY CAN CHARGE OUT THE NOSE FOR EVERYTHING TO TAKE A B/P ON MY DOG WAS 55.00 COME ON GET REAL FOLKS! IT'S GOUGING AT IT'S WORST. THEY PRAY ON YOUR EMOTIONS AND TREAT YOU LIKE YOUR 2ND CLASS IF YOU CAN NOT AFFORD WHAT THEY RECOMMEND. ALL I WANTED DONE WAS TO GET BLOOD WORK AND THEY COULD NOT EVEN DO THAT BECAUSE THEY'RE OVER INFLATED FEE WAS 3 TIMES THE NORMAL VET FEE FOR SAME SERVICE AND THEY ALSO CHARGED ME FOR FLUIDS THAT I PAID FOR AT THE PREVIOUS VET. MY POOR GRACE DID NOT MAKE IT AND IT IS DIFFICULT NOT TO HAVE BITTERNESS TOWARDS THIS MONEY HUNGRY COMPANY THAT NEEDS TO RECONSIDER THE OATH THEY TOOK WHEN BECOMING A VET IN THE FIRST PLACE. We would only recommend this location as an emergency vet. They are wonderful and the staff are very patient. Our beagle, Lady, suffered from a ruptured disc in her spine and their vets recommended immediate transfer to UGA Vet School. While Lady was there, she was taken well cared of and they kept in contact with our regular vet.Our King Charles, Reggie, began fainting in January and they took amazing care of him! He had to be on oxygen during the ride and the techs rigged our crate to accommodate him (they wrapped it in trash bags and plastic) during the ride up to UGA. He had bloody vomiting last week and they took great care of him again! They gave him a bath and once again, we headed up to UGA Vet. They know when your pet needs more medical help and UGA is a 1.5-hour drive from there on Hwy. 78.This is a truly wonderful vet and we wouldn't know what to do without them there! Read Less

I unfortunately had to zoom my 3-month-old kitten to Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Clinic after I found out that lilies are poisonous to cats--and he had been chewing, nibbling and maybe even ingesting the petals and leaves on the lilies my special male friend gave me a couple days earlier. The receptionist was very kind when giving me advice on the phone, as well as directions to this tucked away clinic--behind a vacant, sketchy-looking Krystal off Lawrenceville Highway (or at least it looked shady at night). Her perfect directions mitigated the stress of trying to rush my baby to help. It was a Monday night, and I didn't have to wait at all for the vet technician, Julie, to check out my dear fuzzball. She remained optimistic while also being realistic, letting me know that a cat who had ingested lilies a week before probably wasn't going to live...The vet came into my room after about 20 minutes and recommended that we do some bloodwork to check my kitten's kidney values, and then decide on a treatment plan from there. His kidney values ended up being normal and healthy, thank God, so the vet fed my feline some active charcoals to absorb the toxins and then injected him with some sort of fluids--I guess my stress caused me to forget what the fluids were supposed to do...it was sort of funny to see my baby's bubble of fluid on his back. All in all, the entire staff was positive and calm during a time of panic--and they all seemed genuinely happy that my kitten ended up being okay. Too often, professionals in industries such as this develop stoicism and hardened attitudes toward death. The bill was exorbitant, of course, but worth it--because the fine folks at Dekalb-Gwinnett Animal Emergency Clinic just might have saved my kitty-boo's life. Read Less

This review is bittersweet.  But I hope it will be beneficial to someone who has a pet who they love who may be ill.  We took our "Katie" to DeKalb-Gwinnett clinic after she stopped eating/drinking and responding to us.  The staff was very caring over the phone before our visit and were just as wonderful when we got her there.  They looked her over thoroughly and were just very kind to us.  Long story short she did not make it and we made the difficult choice to let her go.  The staff called me and gave me reports on her status and helped me through this.  I am gonna miss my little mama Katie but would trust this clinic with any pets I may have in the future.   RIP Katie:) Read Less

I can't recommend Animal Emergency Center of Sandy Springs enough, they saved our kitten's life, and our financial sanity. Read Less
