We cannot express how happy we are with Dr. Allison Ong and the staff here.  After we adopted our dog recently, we were lucky enough to have Dr. Ong become our vet.  She really takes the time to answer all of your questions and concerns and our dog loves her.  You never feel rushed with her.  Even with the high volume of patients they have here, everyone is always friendly and helpful.  When our dog recently had to have a skin condition evaluated, Dr. Sakamoto called us as soon as the results came back and Dr. Ong took the time to follow up with us.  That meant a LOT to us, because we were so worried about the diagnosis.  We appreciate everyone here. Meh...Guess the search continues for a good vet on Oahu. Our experience here recently was pretty unimpressive. Maybe it was an unusually hectic morning there but the atmosphere was a total disaster for our furry friend. Two whining & barking dogs in the waiting area for at least 20 minutes while their owners tried to square up their bills. Our cat was terrified before we even got into the exam room. The vet was over half an hour late to see us and when she arrived a loud vacuum came on right outside our exam room. Our cat was freaking out by this point. And was panting (which we have never seen him do before EVER) and lashed out toward the vet and my husband (which he has never done before EVER) and just pretty much hated every minute of this vet's office and all of the staff. They had to put a towel over him to even do the world's quickest physical exam and give him the one shot he needed. We had to request the vacuum be shut off before it occurred to them to do anything about it and then it came on again 5 minutes later. The staff was very apologetic and nice about everything, however, I don't need apologies I need proper service. I need an environment which is appropriate, quiet & comfortable for all animals--not just dogs!  I expect to be seen on time, especially when we had an early appointment. And I would have thought I would get a call with the fecal test results but two weeks went by and my husband had to follow up himself.  We will not be back here--it's not a cat friendly environment at all! I know it would be easy to dismiss this review as someone with a scaredy cat or whatever...but our cat always seemed happy as a clam when we would take him to our vet in NY.  He was comfortable and relaxed and didn't mind being examined or having his nails trimmed or anything they would do. This place is probably fine for dog owners but it was totally wrong for our little kitty  :( Read Less

I found this Hawaii Kai Vet after I made several unpleasant visits to Kaka'ako Pet Hospital.  I was new to the island and looking for a vet for a 5 yr old cat I recently got from a shelter.   I was nervous because of the bad experience I had with another vet, but Hawaii Kai Vet was wonderful from the first time I called.  I saw them from around September 2013 - May 2017 when I moved off island, and I am so sad to have to find a new vet.  They reassured me about my concerns from the previous vet and told me those recommendations were not needed and that my cat was okay.  They never pushed to add services or get more money from me.  They also always seemed happy to see my cat and like they actually cared.  It is a very happy office and that makes a big difference.  I didn't feel like they were just trying to get me out the door.  They were also very gentle and caring with my cat.  A couple times I got his teeth cleaned and he had to stay in the office while he came out of anesthesia, and I felt like when I went to pick him up that he had been taken very good care of.Making appointments was always easy for me, they are always accommodating and also open Saturdays.  I sometimes ran late and they never gave me a hard time.  I also never had to wait longer than 15 minutes in the waiting room.  The girls and vets are all very pleasant and welcoming.  In addition, they are very good at answering and returning calls/emails.  I sometimes called with questions and they were very helpful over the phone.  I also sometimes needed paperwork which they promptly sent over.  I flew my cat off island and they were very knowledgeable about what was needed and giving advice about flying him (and he did fine on the plane!)I drove all the way from Ala Moana to Hawaii Kai because I loved this office so much.  It was definitely worth it.  Dr. Yoon was really great but he retired before I moved.  However Dr. Sakamoto was who I saw after he retired and she was great too.  I always felt like they cared and that they didn't mind my questions.  I'm a bit of a worrier and especially with pets it's never easy to know what's going on with their symptoms.  Thank you Hawaii Kai Vet for taking such good care of my cat while I was on island, I truly appreciate it and keep up the great care! Feels like a ohana when you step into the clinic.  Dr Ann Sakamoto is so good with my dogs ( I have 3, Mele, Kaila and Hoku )that she actually sits on the floor with them so they feel more comfortable.  They lick her face and get lots of love before the examination.  She has been spot on with her diagnosis and has helped with their speedy recovery. As I read in another Yelp review about their clinic,  they do not over charge like so many other places do.  I used to drive quite far when she was in Kaneohe but didn't mind because my dogs were in good hands.  Love it now that she moved to Hawaii Kai!!   Thanks you. If others had the same experience as my 12 yr old St Bernard had today, this would be a one star shop. We came in for some blood work to renew our Rimadyl and to have a skin issue looked at. After a long wait, the vet tech took him to the back for the blood test. 20 minutes passed and I asked Dr Leeloy what was going on. She informed me that while clipping his nails, they cut too short and now they were holding him down to try to control the bleeding. The vet tech said, 'Don't worry, we won't charge you for the nail clipping.' My wife and I were shocked, we demanded to see our dog immediately. We did not ask for the clipping, but they did it without consent. We would have refused had it been offered. Our dog is very old for his breed, the less stress the better. They dragged him into the exam room, because he could not walk, trailing spots of blood behind him though a blood soaked bandage on his back left paw. He was panting heavily. Dr. Leeloy was apologetic and let me vent my frustrations on her. She quickly looked at his skin condition. Recommended an ointment and antibiotics and charged us $261 for our trouble. They were gracious enough to waive the office visit fee. I had to lift my 120 lb boy into my arms and carry him out of the clinic. Tonight he is still unable to walk. When he does try, the nail bleeds profusely and he crumbles in pain. This has been my worst vet experience by a large measure and ranks in the top 5 of my worst life experiences. If you have to bring your friend here, keep a close watch on them. I would recommend steering clear of this place all together. Read Less

We love Hawaii Kai vet clinic!! Cujo is my first dog and I had that "new parent" syndrome where I was finicky about everything my dog eats, sleeps-on, drinks, plays with, sniffs, bathes in, and all other ridiculous and innocuous things I can control. So naturally I was worried about his first vet visits and if this experience would traumatize him. But he loved it! The staff is so friendly and Dr. Yoon (who since retired :[)  was so knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to me. It was comforting to have people so invested in my fur-baby. And now with Dr. Kaya there we still feel that same sense of care and love. Any time my friends have vet problems I tell them they need to go to See Dr. Kaya and his amazing staff at Hawaii Kai Vet Clinic. I am so thankful to have such a great vet office so close to home! What do you do when your children get a puppy without you really knowing about it?  I don't know about you, but I did a lot of deep breathing.  Then I had to find a vet.  I wasn't too happy with our current vet because I felt that the fees were getting a little too steep over the years, so I knew I had to find a new one.  And where do you go to find a good recommendation?  Yelp, of course!Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic was one of the places that seemed to be the place for us to check out.  I called to see if I could inquire about the type and number of puppy shots our new dog would need.  The person that answered the phone was Monterey and she is awesome.  She took the time to give me a rundown of the shots, visits, and the costs.  She was patient and made sure to answer all my questions without trying to rush me off the phone.  I felt so comfortable with her that I decided to bring the new fur baby to them.On our 1st visit, I actually got to meet Monterey.  She is as nice in person as she was on the phone.  All of the staff were so welcoming to our family!  They made sure to make the puppy feel comfortable, too!  When we met Dr. Kaya, he greeted us like we were old friends.  He made sure to speak directly to my children (the true puppy owners) to let them know what he was checking for and what they should expect as new dog parents.  He is great! When it was time to check out, the front counter staff made sure to explain the costs and to schedule the next appointment.  The service here is just wonderful!  It was so great, that we decided to bring all our animals over to them.  If you are looking for great staff, wonderful doctors, and relatively decent prices, bring your fur babies here! What can you say about a vet clinic with so much aloha and kokua for every animal that steps through the door? They rock! From the day I brought home my pup, HKVC has been there to guide me step by step. We get everything from them (food, treats, meds) The staff is incredible and so kind. They know their patients and the families that bring them in so well. They are impeccably organized and so well run like a machine! Maybe it's my pup, he's a sweetie (like his dad) and a chow hound (like his mom), but I'm thinking it was the docs there with their gentle touches that made him sit for a blood draw without an issue and take medication like it was a treat. There is a nice little potty area around the corner of the building that has poop bags and everything. If you trust them with your pets you will be putting your pets in the best hands imaginable. Wagging tails all around. Read Less

Thanks you. For all that you do! Read Less

Read Less

Dr Kaya is the best!!!  He is patient, caring, and an amazing doctor. When my dog Kodi turned 1, he started having a weird cough.  I took him to 4 different vets and they all told me that it was nothing.  But I knew something wasn't right... and then I found Dr Kaya!  He patiently listened to me and did different tests.  He treated Kodi for his upper respiratory issues and we were able to control his problem.  That was about 12 years ago and we've been seeing Dr Kaya ever since.  I trust that he's doing the best for my dog and me... I wish I could see him myself! The staff at Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic is great!  They're always friendly and care about us too!  I definitely recommend them for your pet.

Read Less

If you love your pet, I would go here - especially for dogs !!! Dont know why the other person said="stay away" but Dr. Yoon is the best vet I have seen so far in 20 years. Yes, he is not the cheapest; if you want cheap go somewhere else. He is caring, but also very no-nonsense and practical in terms of his advice, so dont expect sugar-coated stuff. The staff is also very professional - no drama like some of the other locatios. He seems to have this 6th sense (at least for dogs) Read Less
