I have brought my dogs to Island Veterinary Care since 1998.  With the excellent services of Island Veterinary Care, my first two dogs lived 15 and 16 years.  I currently have an active & mischievous  2-year-old dog who is staying healthy with multiple interventions from Drs. Bert & Rachel Lau.I prefer veterinary care that approaches the standards of human health care.  Such a high standard requires blood tests, monitoring equipment, college-trained veterinary assistants and other expensive resources.  If you have high expectations for your pet's veterinary care, then this is the clinic for you! When one dog needed knee surgery, Dr. Lau offered the services of a veterinary surgeon who specialized in orthopedics.  This may have reduced the profit of Island Veterinary Care, but it gave my dog an excellent surgical result.  This is evidence of the ethics of the vets at Island Veterinary Care and their genuine concern for their patients. My fur-babies have kept Island Veterinary Care busy with multiple, sometimes serious, conditions & injuries:  the dislocated knee, as mentioned above; a cancerous liposarcoma; a herniated disc; a nearly-ruptured spleen with life-saving surgery; a tumor in the neck (noncancerous, *whew*!); kidney disease requiring daily saline infusions; a near-lethal venomous insect bite; ingestion of Naprosyn requiring emergency treatment; a broken foot; blistered paws requiring bandages & rest; a midnight bellyache (X-rays revealed ingestion of rocks); pancreatitis; pre-Cushing's syndrome; elevated liver enzymes; allergies; laceration near the eye requiring stitches, chronic staph infection of the skin (i.e, stinky-old-dog smell); ...and many others.  My dogs always receive excellent treatment. If you want the *BEST* veterinary care for your pet, not just "good enough", take him to Island Veterinary Care. I am shocked by the good reviews for this place - it is clear from my personal experience, testimony I've heard from others, and the one star reviews for this business, that this place does NOT care about the pets and only care about the $$$ in their pockets. My mom & I took our eight year old German Shepard in because of limping and a skin condition. He insisted on doing surgery just to get a diagnosis, but when pressed for the possible outcomes, he could only offer tendinitis as an example! He wouldn't tell us any other possible conditions they may find but insisted he needed to do it to find out what condition it is...? He quoted us $2000 just for the anesthesia. And I'm sure he would have insisted on more surgery after the initial "diagnosis" one.My best friend took her new puppy here to get the initial shots needed for puppies. He quoted her $300 for each shot, 3x more than what is standard! Other reviews assert that his higher prices are worth it, but I do not think this is true. Why would you need to bump up the price of standard shots? If you cared about the animals, you'd be happy to help at the regular price. Overall this place is just trying to exploit people's deep emotional attachments to their pets to gain themselves a pretty penny! Read Less

I came here with my two dogs per recommendation by my friend and boy am I happy that I chose this place out of all the other vets. This place is a little pricier than the other places for routine check ups and vaccines but it's definitely worth it. Dr Lau is very knowledgable and helpful and was there for me the whole time I was freaking out when one of my dog's broke into my care package full of CANDY. He takes emergency after hours calls for his clients and ran me step by step on what to do and to post him with updates throughout the weekend. He isn't required to but he did and that's dedication. As an ER nurse, I was truly impressed with the quality healthcare Dr. Lau and his staff offer, and felt comfortable and assured that my dog was in good hands. Dr. Lau and his staff found time to squeeze me in without an appointment when my dog Mikey was sick and throwing up blood. They did a thorough exam to rule out any life threatening conditions. After examination, Dr. Lau was asking about the area I live and asked if there was any rat poison around. When I got home I checked around my apartment building, sure enough I found rat poison under our apartment staircase. Luckily Dr. Lau started him on the antidote medication as precautionary. You can really tell that Dr. Lau and his staff truly care about the animals that they care for and followed up with me to check on Mikey frequently. so i own two guinea pigs, a boy and girl (i know i know...), and i only kept them in the same cage cause the female (kami) would not let rex mount her. so i had them caged together for a good 3 months and then finally he was able to do his business with her. I took her to this little clinic for a check up and had called ahead of time to see how expensive it was going to be they said 40... i get there, they were really nice, super friendly, i waited for a family with their dying dog to finish up, and then i was next. i explain to the vet that she's very skittish; so he grabs her, lets go and she almost runs off the table...i thought i was gonna die...so i tell him (i forgot his name) that she might be pregnant, he massages her sides and says, nope not pregnant. offered me an x-ray for her and i said no because i trusted his word. i leave the room and the receptionist with a lovely smile says it'll be about $75....for a massage... Now as i sit here at home with my amazing frapp, i am overlooking my little kami feeding her little pups....which i discovered she was giving birth to at 5am...so i had to help her out. mind you, guinea pigs after 6months of age tend to die by giving birth, that's why i was so worried to begin with... needless to say, due to his inaccurate diagnosis and expensive rate, i will no longer be going there. nice people though! ;) Read Less

so i own two guinea pigs, a boy and girl (i know i know...), and i only kept them in the same cage cause the female (kami) would not let rex mount her. so i had them caged together for a good 3 months and then finally he was able to do his business with her.
