I've read every review about Kahala Pet Hospital (KPT), and, frankly, I cannot believe we are discussing the same place. After a year of minor rear leg injuries, we decided to bring our dog, Ipo, to see Dr. Leadbeater for a second opinion. (Three different vets already had seen her; none took X-rays; all just prescribed pain-killers and/or anti-inflammatory drugs). Dr L. did a thorough exam (free) and took x-rays which revealed congenital deficiencies in both of Ipo's rear legs. Really bad news. But the reason we went to Dr. L. was his renown as the best surgeon for knees and hips in Hawai`i. So, we ended up having knee surgery for both rear knees, staggered over a 3-month period. it is very difficult surgery, and very long and difficult rehab for the dog. Nevertheless, we would do anything for Ipo just like most people would do for THEIR dogs. But that is not why I am writing. I am writing because some of the reviews sound like they are evaluating a clinic from another planet, not the Kahala Pet Hospital we know a and love. First of all, Ipo loves this pl;ace like you wouldn't believe. As soon as we tell her we are going to see Dr. Leadbeater, she goes into action, running around, tail going crazy, and her high lasts until we come home again. And I think I know why. It starts with the front desk folks, usually Christine and Jennel. Unless they are interviewing another customer, they come charging out from behind their desk to greet ipo, and maybe drop a little treat down her hatch. They are so great to Ipo and to my wife and I, I just cannot understand how anyone can be anything but thrilled by their service. I have heard both of them, on the phone and in person, dealing with difficult situations with customers, and doing so with patience, clarity and genuine niceness. What they have to pt up would give me a tic in one day (not the biting kind of tick, either). Then, if they know we are there, some of the techs come out to see Ipo, and Ipo just freaks. In particular, she is greeted like the greatest dog in the world by Jason and Bry who Ipo loves like you wouldn't believe. They make all of us feel so happy to have such wonderful personnel at KPT. This may sound corny, but it is really fun to visit there. And, of course, last but not least is the wonderful Dr. Leadbater. Great with the dogs, always loving, a great sense of humor (he figured me out after only 2 sessions!), and an unbelievable and thoroughly updated vet and surgeon. A couple of reviews criticized aftercare at KPT. Never, EVER was there a split second hesitation to get us in when we called. Even when our concerns were a little nutty, Dr. L. took them seriously and was never in the least impatient. So, all in all, you could not have a more caring, patient, loving, helpful, effective team than the staff at Kahala Pet Hospital.
