I highly recommend Dr. Leadbeater and his staff at Kahala Pet Hospitol. He did a TPLO surgery on our dog for torn ACLs. Once on his back left leg in October 2015 for a fully torn ACL and then on his back right light in September 2016 for a partially torn ACL. My dog has made an awesome recovery on both occasions. My dog wanted to run already after he came home from his second surgery for the partially torn ACL. We love the people at Kahala Pet Hospital because of their caring nature. Dr. Leadbeater took his time to explain the procedure and took his time to answer questions. The same goes for his staff. I highly recommend Kahala Pet Hospital for your pets.Read Less

I just want to say thank you so much!!!! My little Jack was extremely sick and we had no idea what was wrong, I was in tears whenever we brought him in, and we had to keep him there over night because they wanted to treat him right away. Turns out our little Jack had coccidia and hook worms. :( The next evening we got a phone call saying that he was ready to be taken home. The nurse staff always called me to let me know how he was doing, every few hours, which I thought was really sweet. They really take care of your furry four legged friends here and I'm so thankful for that! By the way they do military discounts as well (: Read Less

I just got home from an amazing first visit with Dr. Leadbeater. My dog has had a mysterious rash for a month, and after multiple visits to another vet, I decided to make and appointment at Kahala Pet Hospital for a second opinion. Everywhere else in my life--at the doctor, at the chiropractor, at the dentist--as a patient I'm always rushed. Doctors always act as though they don't have time for you and make quick diagnoses. This is why I was so genuinely surprised at how long Dr. leadbeater spent with myself and my dog. He was so patient, calm, and took time to really observe my dog in a way no other vet has before. The time spent built a real trust on my end and for my dog as well. I feels as though this kind of thoughtful, careful patient care is a kind of lost art--so to experience it was really cool.Dr. Leadbeater also looked at my other dog, who didn't have an appointment, just because I asked. I thought this was a genuinely kind gesture and a great example of quality patient care. At the end of the appointment, I went to pay and the very kind receptionist said there was no need. What!? She informed me that second opinion appointments are free (I also just noticed that on this Yelp page). Seeing as I was expecting a big first-visit bill, this was a genuine relief and really made me trust Dr. Leadbeater even more. Also, his vet tech was really knowledgable, good with my dog, and friendly. It really made the visit stress-free. I also love that there are about 4 dogs that just hang out at the front desk! So cute! Thanks again Dr. Leadbeater we are very happy to have you as our new vet. Dr. Leadbeater is one of the more experienced vets but I can't say why his receptionists would say that he isn't taking any patients or clients as around 13 yrs ago, I took my Brandy to him for hip x-rays and he suggested total hip replacement and if not for a 2nd opinion, my Mom was going to help me pay for it. Because I continued with the opinion that I was happy with, saying that he'd have to disagree with Dr. Leadbeater, he, Dr. Leadbeater after 13 yrs, still holds this against me. Same with Brandy's brother that according to Leadbeater, needed elbow surgery but after she done some research, decided not to do it and Analeese, the Guardian of Brandy's brother was told that he can't see them anymore...See the equation? But you know what, after my Brandy died in 2012, I feel that if I continued with Leadbeater, Brandy may still be alive today as Kaneohe VCA is an animal veterinary place, there more for your money than your dog's well being. They always said that even 5, 6 shot cocktails, all given in one, DOESN'T COMPROMISE THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM. IT CERTAINLY DOES. At Kaneohe VCA they say that supplements are FOS. BS as there are great supplements needed to fill any voids with every living thing's nutrition. Read Less

He is still so gentle and caring with his examinations and explains thoroughly all the medical procedures. Ellie Mae has had her share of issues due to irresponsible pet breeders but thanks to Dr. Leadbeater, was always diagnosed and treated professionally. Recently Ellie had Stem Cell Therapy done here. She was seriously in pain and discomfort due to arthritis in her hip. She was not able to climb the stairs so we had to help her both up and down. After 24 hrs of the first treatment, we could not believe the transformation. She behaved like a puppy again, prancing around with happiness. We are so glad we looked into Stem cell Therapy but most of all, we are grateful that Dr. Leadbeater was able to do it. Read Less

We had a very poor experience with Dr. Ledbetter and would discourage anyone from taking their pet here. We had x-rays done on our dog at the urging of the vet. We received a printed quote and after the x-rays were done the office tried to charge us more than the quote. After much arguing they honored their quote. Also, he ordered so many x-rays, half of which were in areas where the issue was not even located.More importantly, after the x-rays the vet didn't know what was wrong with our dog and recommended laser treatment or stem cell therapy, both of which have a 50% success rate and can cost around 3-6k. After taking a recommendation from our friend at Feather and Fur we went to see Dr Watkins at VERC. She had an idea of what the issue was and did an ultrasound to confirm.  She was able to identify the cause of our dog's pain and recommended a surgery that cost much less. Ledbetter seemed extreme in his measures and out to make money. After paying over $500 for x-rays he couldn't even identify the issue, seems like he should have done a much cheaper ultrasound. And our dog had to be sedated for the x-rays. I have heard from a few other pet owners that they have had serious issues with Ledbetter. One person even had their pet die in his care. I was very displeased with our experience and would never take my dog here again. Read Less

I've read every review about Kahala Pet Hospital (KPT),  and, frankly, I cannot believe we are discussing the same place. After a year of minor rear leg injuries, we decided to bring our dog, Ipo, to see Dr. Leadbeater for a second opinion. (Three different vets already had seen her; none took X-rays; all just prescribed pain-killers and/or anti-inflammatory drugs). Dr L. did a thorough exam (free) and took x-rays which revealed congenital deficiencies in both of Ipo's rear legs. Really bad news. But the reason we went to Dr. L. was his renown as the best surgeon for knees and hips in Hawai`i. So, we ended up having knee surgery for both rear knees, staggered over a 3-month period. it is very difficult surgery, and very long and difficult rehab for the dog. Nevertheless, we would do anything for Ipo just like most people would do for THEIR dogs. But that is not why I am writing. I am writing because some of the reviews sound like they are evaluating a clinic from another planet, not the Kahala Pet Hospital we know a and love. First of all, Ipo loves this pl;ace like you wouldn't believe. As soon as we tell her we are going to see Dr. Leadbeater, she goes into action, running around, tail going crazy, and her high lasts until we come home again. And I think I know why. It starts with the front desk folks, usually Christine and Jennel. Unless they are interviewing another customer, they come charging out from behind their desk to greet ipo, and maybe drop a little treat down her hatch. They are so great to Ipo and to my wife and I, I just cannot understand how anyone can be anything but thrilled by their service. I have heard both of them, on the phone and in person, dealing with difficult situations with customers, and doing so with patience, clarity and genuine niceness. What they have to pt up would give me a tic in one day (not the biting kind of tick, either). Then, if they know we are there, some of the techs come out to see Ipo, and Ipo just freaks. In particular, she is greeted like the greatest dog in the world by Jason and Bry who Ipo loves like you wouldn't believe. They make all of us feel so happy to have such wonderful personnel at KPT. This may sound corny, but it is really fun to visit there. And, of course, last but not least is the wonderful Dr. Leadbater. Great with the dogs, always loving, a great sense of humor (he figured me out after only 2 sessions!), and an unbelievable and thoroughly updated vet and surgeon. A couple of reviews criticized aftercare at KPT. Never, EVER was there a split second hesitation to get us in when we called. Even when our concerns were a little nutty, Dr. L. took them seriously and was never in the least impatient. So, all in all, you could not have a more caring, patient, loving, helpful, effective team than the staff at Kahala Pet Hospital. Words can't express how grateful we are to Dr. Ledbetter and the Kahala Pet team.  I brought my dog Olive in after she tweaked her back somehow. Due to the nature of her injury (spinal cord issue) when I booked the appointment Kahala Pet got me in the next day.  Dr. Ledbetter even personally called me that same night to ask me a few questions about Olive's condition which I felt was extremely thoughtful.  He mentioned that sometimes with those types of injuries timing is of the essence so he wanted to make sure she would be ok overnight.  We brought Olive in the next morning and they kept her for the day.  I must say that the moment we walked in the door I knew we were in good hands.  It turned out that Olive had a ruptured disk and a CT scan and most likely surgery was necessary -- we proceeded with his recommended treatment plan and Olive stayed with Kahala Pet the next 7 days.  After the surgery they encouraged us to come by daily and visit our little pup and were so kind when we came in to explain how she was doing.  It's been one month since Olive's surgery and I could be more happy and thankful that we chose Kahala Pet to help her.  She wouldn't be the same dog today if another Dr. did the surgery, I just know it.    I would recommend Dr. Ledbetter over and over and can't express enough gratitude for how he's helped our dog.  Bedside manner isn't taught in school but he's a top notch example of a vet you would want to take your pet to.NOTE: I noticed some of the other reviews here, and it makes me sad that they didn't feel the same about their experience with Kahala Pet.  There are always two parts to pet care and Dr's can only suggest care and treatment. Then the owners must commit to suggested treatment plans and care at home.  We spent hours and hours with Olive doing post-op physical therapy and I feel that this was a joint effort with the medical guidance from Dr. Ledbetter and then us making it happen at home.p.s. We also had Trupanion Pet Insurance and Kahala Pet assisted with filing the claim.  It was quick and easy.  If you don't have Pet Ins. it's worth the small monthly payment to have a cushion for when catastrophes like this happen. Dr. Leadbeater is a good guy, and no doubt cares about his clients.  Unfortunately, for us... he was unable to diagnose our pups chronic condition either initially or throughout his 7 year life.  He continued to employ the same antiquated tests with the same unknown results time and time again, at tremendous expense.  His auto-response was to open up our little boy and perform an exploratory surgery... which we declined and avoided for 6 years.  Upon a recent visit Leadbeater told us if we didn't allow him to perform his exploratory surgery he wouldn't remain his Vet, which he was since day one.  We reluctantly agreed to the surgery and ultimately ended up making the worst decision of our lives.  In a short 30 days, our boy deteriorated quickly from a happy and energetic dog to near death.  We lost all confidence in Leadbeater and were forced to seek help at the Emergency Veterinary Clinic.  They quickly (within 24 hours) pinpointed his chronic condition with a simple ultrasound, and recommendation to cure.  It breaks my heart to tell you that since his condition had deteriorated so much... he didn't make it to the accurate and corrective procedure.  Again, although we think Leadbeater is a good guy, his inability to diagnose what is a relatively common ailment throughout our dogs life, ended up costing him his.  Why he hasn't embraced and employed what isn't even considered modern day technology at his "hospital" is unacceptable.  Even worse, his reluctance to seek outside help or advice from another Vet in Hawaii with tools and skills Leadbeater doesn't employ is borderline criminal.  We will not recommend Leadbeater or the Kahala Pet Hospital to any of our existing and future pet loving friends.  It is in our opinion, time for Leadbeater to retire from his longstanding practice since he has consciously decided to remain irrelevant when it comes to keeping up with technology.  He's enjoyed many successful years and doubtlessly saved many lives during that time, which he should be commended for.  We lost our boy because he continues to live in the past rather than embrace and prepare for the future. While the Front desk staff can be hit or miss, Dr. Leadbeater is one of, if not the most competent veterinarians on the island. A few years ago my chocolate lab, Drew, was getting on in years and no one could figure out how to make him less lethargic. "A twelve year old lab isn't meant to be running around" is what one specialist said. We were facing our last days with him as fluid was filling his abdomen, he was losing his appetite, and he was suffering from near constant joint pain. A good friend recommended Dr. Leadbeater and everything changed. Instead of putting him through thousands of dollars of tests to figure out what was wrong he looked at the symptoms with the goal of alleviating some of his pain and fluid accumulation. Within a day we had our boy back. He went from spending his days sleeping to running around with our puppy and even stealing cat food from our cat. He has since passed on but I will always be grateful to the staff here, especially Dr. Leadbeater for giving us six more happy months with our boy. More recently, my black Labrador was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia a few years ago following a month of limping, our regular veterinarian as well as an outside specialist said that she would be lame within a few years and would require double joint replacements as well as in-house stem cell therapy. Dr. Leadbeater along with his various contacts across the country took a look at her imaging and determined that the surgery might make the situation worse and that waiting was going to be our best option. Today she is running, swimming and jumping just like a puppy. We are cautious not to overrun her but she is healthier than ever with no surgery necessary. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less
