Dr. Yasunaga and staff are wonderful. I was very concerned about finding the right vet after leaving my dogs vet since she was 6wks old and 7yrs of long history to come to Hawaii.
Southern needed to be put under anesthesia for her teeth cleaning. A fairly routine procedure, except for my furbaby has had trouble with "routine anesthesia" from dental care in the past. I informed Dr. Yasunaga of my anesthesia concerns, and being a nurse I'm even more of a nervous dog mom!
I called two days before surgery with a slew of questions and the staff tried to answer everything they could, they also left a message with Dr. Yasunaga to call me back. She spoke with me for a solid 10mins answering questions and I never felt she was rushed to get me off the phone. The day of surgery everyone knew I was worried about my furbaby and they kept me so informed. Much better than bedside nurses 😕 and hospital doctors! I was called prior to IV placement to make sure it was ok to shave her leg to make it easier and to be notified they were starting. I received pictures as requested and a text when she was finished, followed by a followup phone call from Dr. Yasunaga. Everyone went above and beyond to make me feel at ease and as comfortable as I was with my vet back home. I'm so great to have found a vet in Hawaii that is up to date, and so accommodating and caring with pleasant friendly staff. I would love to recommend Kaka'ako Pet Hospital, but I want to keep them a secret too so we can always get an appointment when needed 😉 Caring veterinary clinics can be difficult to come by as it is a business. Thank you Dr. Yasunaga and staff for not making us feel like a pay check and instead like family or Ohana as said in Hawaii. Read Less

Dr. K and her staff provide outstanding care for our pets. I first met her at the University Pet Clinic located in Manoa Valley in the 1980s. Thirty years later when I take my pup to her Kaka’ako Pet Hospital, she still remembered that I used to bring my animals to the clinic on my motorcycle. She remembered that I was in grad school ay UH in Social Work and she remembered that my friend always came to the clinic with me. I had forgotten that! I went to this vet several times when I first got my 5 yr old cat from a shelter. I had a negative experience each time I went (3-5 visits total) and never left with a good feeling about the care my cat was receiving or the price I was paying. They never seemed to remember my cat or particularly be invested or care about his health. Both the office staff and especially the vet (not sure of his name, an older Asian man) were not very friendly. The vet had poor bedside manner. I feel like they also pushed services and medications on me to get more money. This was confirmed once I started seeing another vet, Hawaii Kai Vet Clinic, who assured me that none of those recommendations were needed and that my cat was fine. I continued to go to Hawaii Kai Vet until I moved off island and was very happy with them. The big thing was during my visits with Kaka'ako - they said my cat had gingivitis and they needed to put him under and clean his teeth and possibly remove them all, but they wouldn't know until they put him under if they would have to take them out. They gave me an estimate for over $1000 and I left the office crying - not really because of the bill, but because I had never heard of having to remove all a cats teeth. I've had cats my whole life and this has never been suggested. My other vet told me we definitely did not have to do this. Another time, my cat was sick and I called to see if I could bring him in that day. They said yes, come on in and no need to make an appointment. I take a cab there and the gates are locked with a sign that says they will be gone for the next 3 hours. This is right in the middle of the day that they just decide to shut down, and I had called and told someone I was coming in. Since I had paid for a cab, I had to wait outside with my cat in his carrier until they returned. They were not at all apologetic and seemed like they could care less. The office is a little dingy but I'm sure fine, just kind of a dark and more hospital like environment. I would have been fine with that if the people were a little more friendly but with everything combined I just didn't like it. I'm so glad I stopped going there and searched for a better vet. I've taken Kintsugi here ever since he was a puppy. And I'll continue that trend as long as we're still living in Hawaii. Kintsugi received all his shots, checkups, and his neutering procedure here. He even got his microchip here as well. Through each appointment I felt at ease that he was in good hands. I even buy his heartworm and flea/tick medication here too.I've gone back and forth between Dr. Sakamoto and Dr. Koreyasu. I don't mind seeing either as they are both knowledgeable and Sugi seems to feel comfortable with both of them and their vet techs as well. Kintsugi was the first puppy I ever raised alone. So a lot of things were totally new to me. But both veterinarians provided lots of insight when I needed it most. The vet techs love Sugi and he loves being spoiled by them. Its so hard for me to clip his nails and he doesn't like getting them done at other places but for some reason he loves getting them done here. He gets excited when we have a checkup. Which is great of course! I was so worried he'd despise the vets and despise me for taking him there haha. I like how they post a list of the names of all the doggies visiting for the day. Little personal things like that make the experience that much better. I put my full trust and confidence in the staff here at Kakaako Pet Hospital. If I could give them 0 STARS I would. First of all, I don't know based on what criteria did this place win the Honolulu Magazine's Best of 2014 & 2015 awards. Just the customer service from the front desk alone, is beyond mediocre. Sipping drinks while talking to a customer with a Valleyspeak dialect, shouldn't be something to do WHILE the customers is asking important questions and patiently waiting for answers. Second, the overcharging:I was here 10 days ago and did an exam and I got the results. Paid $220+. Fine.Came again today to ask for a health certificate because I'm leaving the island permanently and they were insinuating that he needed to have extra things done besides the exam and the health certificate. Are you serious? You see, my dog is very old, and because I'm flying in 5 days, I scheduled his vet appointment, including his teeth removal surgery in the place I'm moving to. Now, since I was here 10 days ago and got all the vaccinations, heart worm, etc. up-to-date, I clearly don't see what's their point in trying to charge me for extras, seeing how I was already there less than 2 weeks ago? It's not like his health has suddenly changed or anything.. They just want to "milk an old cow..."While I'm in here, I should mention that I was also quite disappointed even with the vet who examined my dog the first time. This place is not worthy of any awards whatsoever. An overrated average place that needs to reexamine their overall quality of service. Perhaps the awards have gotten to them and now they think they can just get away with providing a mediocre service and charge customers with nonsense.. Do I recommend this place? Definitely NOT. I will not make any names, but there are better vet clinics around. Absolutely nothing in this place deserves an award whatsoever. Read Less

Anyway, this is one of the best veterinarian experiences I've ever had after many years of owning dogs. I find it important that they do not steer into a sales and push extras. They charge the going rate and that just happens to be in the range of a medial professional...without insurance, in my case.

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe some of these low reviews, they are crazy. It kind of sheds light on a part of what the poor staff must have to go through periodically. Bringing your friend to the vet can be an emotional experience and you can see that it can cause a big mental confusion in some of the patrons. Maybe they should wait a bit and then write. If a Dr. is in a hurry, remember that there could very well be a sicker critter in the back and one day that could be your scenario.Anyway, these are vet's vets in my opinion. I am not a vet, but did get a degree in biology and went to one year of vet school, so I can appreciate the details. The cost is in-line with any medical professional with that many years of experience and talent. They do not steer into sales at any point and nearly always give options.I could not be happier. One of my dogs certainly has some chronic dermatitis and both Dr. Koreyasu and Dr. Sakamoto are always there to give me some good guidance on their treatment. Dr. Koreyasu cleaned Murasaki’s teeth, did a restoration on two chipped teeth and removed two bumps on his back! The bumps were nothing to worry about and he now has a Hollywood smile! Highly recommend Dr. Koreyasu for her expertise and compassionate care for animals and their families! 🌈🐾💜 Read Less

They've done a great job of ensuring my baby Shiba is healthy and they've been a big help to me as a first time owner. Read Less

Read Less

I'm jumping on just to counteract the single two star review. There is always 'one of those' who cannot be pleased. I think we have one there, or maybe they were having a bad day.

As my 16.5 and 13 year old border collie mutts amble into the sunset, I feel like I have a world-class support staff just a few blocks down the road. Read Less

One of my dogs certainly has some chronic dermatitis and both Dr. Koreyasu and Dr. Sakamoto are always there to give me some good guidance on their treatment. The docs both have distinct personalities. Dr. Koreyasu is incredibly friendly and empathetic to our individual feelings to our 'lil best friends. Dr. Sakamoto alternatively, is a get-to-the-point, no-nonsense guy; both doctors are knowledgeable, and are able to set out the most appropriate treatments for our guys while working out best ways to reduce the pain to our wallets. Luckily, charges are moderately offset by pet insurance. All the techs are incredibly friendly and equally knowledgeable. Techs are able to at address our concerns with our pets; and if our questions are beyond their expertise, they promptly try to address them. The location is in the middle of the industrial shops of Kaka'ako, and serves to be a calm place during the night hours. The exam rooms are clean and appointed as expected, and does the job of caring for our 'lil guys. A little lawn on the property facilitates bio-breaks for the dogs. Negative reviews for the prices here are laughable. All vets are pricey. This one is actually somewhere in the middle of vets we've tried, not cheap but not expensive either. I preface my review with 2 comments:1) I had a similar experience as Janice H. some time back and as such, I never thought to go here and 2) I/my cat Sassie was not a patient here Here is my story:My cat Sassie was under Kapalama Pet Hospital's care but Sassie needed emergency attention. I called Kapalama and frantically told them to call Kakaako as I need to take Sassie right away. Not waiting for an answer, I hung up, grabbed Sassie and got her to Kakaako Pet Hospital.Five minutes did not pass when I arrived at Kakaako. Their staff immediately took Sassie under their care (it was literally like a scene from ER; only this scene was a Pet ER). Dr. Koreyasu is the caring and compassionate doctor who made sure I was okay and assured me that Sassie did not suffer. She permitted me to stay with Sassie for as long as I chose to and for a few minutes (which felt like an eternity), she stayed with me and gave me words of comfort. Now how cool is that? The entire staff extended comfort and paid condolence when I left. I will go back to Dr. Koreyasu with my cat Patches.By the way, they are a sister clinic to Kapalama Pet Hospital and Dr. Hirata. I adopted a rescue kitty from CatFriends that had a cold and they basically insisted I return it. I could not as I had fallen in love with the little one. I heard from others that this place was bad mouthing sick animals from rescue places, especially CatFriends because they give out a free initial exam with an adoption, but did not believe it until I actually came upon the situation myself.Needless to say, I will NEVER do business with them and my cat is now thriving!I am so happy, yet so upset at a veterinarian that cannot support rescues.I would NEVER recommend this place.
