Tried to reschedule but this guy with a position, administrator, had said something about me and my golden being parked on their side driveway 3 stall parking area probably around half hour after appointment was over, violating POLICY, while I never thought of any significance of that one and only time we went there, as there absolutely was of no health benefit for my golden, only 1.5 YRS old at time, and someone at the beach said of Dr. Wendy ASATO being really great and that's why I wanted to just try again to see what integrative approaches she may have had. This administrator, or so called, named Brad said he takes care of the website and said they never got an email but did get a letter I stuck under the door the night before. I said in letter that if rescheduling again would jeopardize future appts then we will make it. His VM said he went ahead and cancelled and that I could call to reschedule. BUT when i called and asked for him, ENOUGH....don't need this place. BOTTOM LINE....LYING IS LIKE STEALING, AND I DO KNOW HE LIED, and you, and I am not sure of the rest of the staff there, but YOU, BRAD have NO HEART FOR DOGS from my experience....and you say there's a lot more to what I AM ABOUT? YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO WHEREVER YOU FLEW HERE FROM. IT'S THE HAOLES LIKE YOU AND MANY OF THE HOMELESS THAT MAKES THIS ISLAND BEING HARD TO BREATHE..and there are many GREAT haoles here..you and whoever that made any negative statements about me should really take a 2nd or even 3rd look at yourselves......my $$, my personality really is just fine unless you believe everything you hear, even from the educated that went on after graduating with a bachelor's degree, to reach goals that may require another 4, 6 yrs of expensive universities and even then, there's people that, like these that still deceive, or LIE for maybe a personal reason.....like all you may have absorbed in the maybe slightly deceptive mind about, and I put my and my best friend's health on this of whatever anyone even was part of, even over hearing FALSE mentioned related anything about me, anyone involved are like the rest of them, always like to gossip about others, to crucify in any manner.....IT IS HARD TO KNOW PEOPLE THAT REALLY HAS NOTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT ANYONE.....summary, this so called administrator, as sounds like an important position, maybe is but probably not at MAKAI because of their unfaithful principles and their, not all of um but like many other vet practices, fake to be affectionate to your animal...as we all know....or need to know and so called doctor Wendy asap is said to be Holistic? Then why only 3 yrs ago try to influence vaccinating on my neighbor's already 11 yr old Jack Russell Terrier? Even they were not happy at,all with her, resulting with that APPT being LAST, EVER. What ever happened to MR. GOSSIPABOUTOTHERS....the manager for that unnecessary place for animal's needed medical attention? Brad McGuire, the IDIOT that loves talking about others esp if negative or down grading anyone to get his profile to improve? Was worth the 50 minutes on this to HELP THE ANIMAL GUARDIANS. Need to mention that there are GREAT personnel there, but always an integral bit significant amount that would not uphold any quality of excellence..and for all of you that rates 5, I understand you want a great rapport with your vet and really the only way, called "hoomalimali" ... Just for communicating with me, involving my 4.5 YRS old golden retriever, this administrator was not truthful, as this sad situation only took up TIME like now. On THEIR services, maybe their doctors only have conventional meds for so called allergies but at least we didn't go to a rescheduled appt for nothing. Some say that they like this place....I was only looking for relief of itching w/o drugs...and now after seeing a reply by BRAD, title there, administrator, says to whoever looks at reviews that there's much more to this, yes there certainly is so much more. The veterinarian we were scheduled to see probably is an excellent vet but Brad is not TRUTHFUL and I can say this with promises overlooking the health of my most PRECIOUS friend, a 4.5 yr old intact golden retriever. Since Brad wanted to reply using probably FALSE allegations, I will only say that whatever he's heard is totally FALSE as sure, if you looked into someone's history, and seen denied cases that were filed, sure even I would certainly think that this person is some sort of trouble but it was after my golden retriever died from mast cell tumors that had metastasis occurring and our vet had immediately scheduled a 2nd excision without.......experts said that a 2nd surgery shouldn't even have been discussed and all this led to what I think Brad is referring to. Brad, when you said something about that one time I had brought her in and we were in your parking lot of 3, 4 stalls, we were there for maybe 45 minutes? No one said it was prohibited to park there as everything we did there all about my golden retriever. What...you think whoever put it in the records thought I was going to break in any of vehicles there? Or anything not lawful? NO, EVERYTHING IS ABOUT MY AKCGOLDENS, nothing else. YOU waste pur PRECIOUS TIME, deceiving Caucasian (haole) as I don't need to HOOMALAMALE to have Makai see us. Just that my only experience with Dr. Wendy ASATO was when I mentioned "diatomaceous earth, food grade" she was completely against it, saying, "you know what that is, it's chopped up fine glass" implying that their products such as Advantage, Frontline, maybe Comfort is or Trifexis, which is a good product, less toxic than other spot ons, or chemical pesticides that I've used minus Frontline, as I didn't know better. I had said to a receptionist that I didn't like her but a few yrs ago, I talked with a female at Kailua beach and she told me Dr. W. Asato's great ...despite a neighbor across the Windward Mall telling me that she wanted to vaccinate their 12 yr old Jack Russell Terrier.....but Brad, get the TRUTHS before you even go there. Brad, if there was more to this, then why didn't you say on the phone to me, if you actually CARE about any (with me) dogs, as people like you and there's so many like you that believe anything you hear or see in any documents related description, when many of descriptive judgements may be FALSE. Not everyone is PERFECT like Brad McGuire. It's the way it is, that "GRAPEVINE"...and yes, if I was in your place, I'd probably believe what I hear but detailed FACTS are really what counts, and most won't go that far....oh, and there's one thing I needed to mention. I NEVER LIE ON REVIEWS.. Read Less

I was pleasantly surprised as how todays's dog appointment went! I took my dog in for eye and nose discharge. All things were explained by Dr. Cunningham with estimated coat for any test or shots and a surprise at the end of my visit I was advised to shop online for the Trifexis cause it was cheaper, that I was happy to be told. Like previous visits they take your pet behind closed doors for certain procedures and nail cutting is more like tip if the nail only but is supposedly complimentary when you get the "check-up". I use to go to another vet in town and everything was done in your presence-stopped cause of convienence as Makai is so much closer! Overall I am happy with our first time with Dr. Cunningham and plan on making future appointments with her for my two dogs!!! Read Less

4 stars on service: great service, really liked Dr. Cunningham. Little to no wait time and easy to make appointments. Kind with Marley and did not try to up sell services or medications for her condition. That being said, I went yesterday to buy flea medication and paid $109. for 4 months. Didn't think anything of it until I checked on Amazon this morning. I paid double of what Amazon charges.  Auwe. Head's up! I could accept 20% more for the convenience, but OVER double? Unacceptable. I am disappointed in this charge and now  question if they are overcharging for my dog's other medication. Credibility is everything. We are new to the area and needed a new vet. The admin staff are nice but could use a little more help on some organization, however nothing too big. Then, we met Dr. Cunningham. She was so nice to me and my doggie baby, listened to my concerns, didn't rush the appointment, and did a full check on my baby. She ran lots of tests, but none that were not needed. She was very smart on options for treatment as well as routine stuff like flea meds. She also didn't push a certain brand but rather just talked about why each one could be beneficial for us. I don't normally write negative reviews like this, but I think fellow pet owners and dog lovers should know about my experience with this office. Shortly after moving to the island and adopting our dog, my husband and I had to travel to the mainland for 10 days and couldn't take our dog with us. Because it was last minute, we couldn't find a dog sitter, and our vet offered their services. They promised around the clock care and plenty of outside time to run and play. When we got back to pick up our dog, I was waiting in the waiting room for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. I didn't understand what was taking so long. After I asked several times, a tech finally came out with my dog in her hands. My dog looked frail and sick. He was shaking like a leaf. I immediately took him, and he clung to me. He was whimpering. I was obviously upset about this and demanded to know what was wrong with him. The front office staff was oblivious (of course). Frustrated, I just wanted to go. They then asked me for payment for his "medication." I asked, "What medication?" Come to find out, they were giving my dog 10mg of Acepromazine every 6 hours for the last 10 days to keep him sedated. I was shocked and upset and begin tearing up as I'm holding my shivering 10 lb. dog in my hands, now realizing that he was drugged and kept caged for 10 days. The front office staff apologized and didn't know what to do...they said that it's "protocol" to call the owners before dispensing any medication, that they don't understand how this could've happened. But they never contacted us and had no record of even attempting to contact us. They just tranquilized my tiny little dog. After waiting another 20-30 minutes, Dr. Zane finally appeared to speak with me. He also apologized for not contacting us about the "medication" but then tried to defend his actions by saying that my dog was whining in the crate too much (which was NOT AT ALL the service they claimed they'd be providing while we were away - what would you expect from a dog who's being kept in a cage for 24 hours a day but to relieve himself twice a day?!). It was such a harrowing experience, but Dr. Zane convinced us that our dog had severe separation anxiety and even sent us home with more medication (Acepromazine, as well as Clomicalm). It took about two weeks for our dog to finally calm down and readjust to being home (and he was fine with no medication once in a normal situation - i.e. NOT CAGED 24 HOURS A DAY). But Dr. Zane and the office staff were so apologetic, we decided to give them another chance. Dr. Zane's bedside manner isn't great. Maybe he's used to dealing with people who don't properly care for their pets, but at our first annual check-up, he told me point blank, "If you don't give your dog his heart worm medication every 30 days, your dog will die. You will kill your dog." Normally, we order the heart worm medication online through a different retailer, but most recently, we placed a refill order with 1800petmeds.com. 1800petmeds.com requires a prescription, so you have to fill in your vet's info. After a day or two, I received an email saying that my vet denied the order. I called the clinic, and they said that they won't work with 1800petmeds.com. I told them that they just need the prescription for the medication, and they refused to fax or call it in - they said they'd write a paper script that I'd have to pick up and mail in. I told them that I don't have that kind of time, that if I don't get this refilled within the next two weeks, my dog will be late on his monthly dose (and Dr. Zane emphatically told me that MY DOG WILL DIE if that happens). I even have my next annual check-up appointment for my dog NEXT WEEK already scheduled! Still, they refused. Enough is enough. I asked them to leave my dog's records at the front desk, and we'll be taking him to a different vet. Our experience with this office has been terrible and absurd. No aloha here. Read Less

I've brought various animals to this clinic in the past fifteen years from rabbits to dogs.  When I had indoor pet rabbits, I brought them to the vets here. Both Dr. Asato and before her, Dr. Tom (he moved to Prague a few years ago) know a great deal about rabbits and it's not easy to find vets who specialize in small animal care.  I had one prominent local vet tell me my rabbit Smokey was just old, so that's why he wasn't eating.  But I could tell Smokey wanted to eat his favorite food, but something was preventing him from eating.  So I took him to the Makai Animal Clinic where they discovered Smokey's molars had grown into his jaw.  Rabbit teeth like human nails never stop growing, so if the teeth aren't worn down by hay and food, it can grow into the jaw hurting the animal.  Long story short, the vet did a simple procedure where he filed the overgrown teeth and Smokey started eating again almost immediately.  Had I listened to the other vet, the rabbit would have starved to death.  Dr. Asato at Makai Animal Clinic does acupuncture for rabbits if you're into that sort of thing.  I'm not sure it did anything for the rabbit with dizziness that I brought in, but other than a small dent to my wallet, it didn't hurt either.I've bought all my dogs here.  The place is clean, well-run, and weirdly enough, relaxing.  I love their aquarium and the sunken feeling of the waiting room.  One of my dogs had orthopedic surgery here.  I feel the staff keeps up with latest treatments.  If you go there, ask for Dr. Aleisha Swartz.  She's so positive and knowledgeable.   Just a great vet for your pet. We have been going to Makai Animal Clinic for I can't even say how long because we have been with Dr. Zane and Marcia forever and have been following him from since he was in Kaimuki, so really forever. Their services have been excellent, he always and I mean always takes the time to explain everything to mean and I am a paranoid mom so I take notes and always ask questions. So the people who are complaining, they must not take the time to prepare their questions (I take a note pad with me with my questions prepared). The staff at Makai have always been courteous and friendly. Of course they are busy because they have a lot of customers but I am patient and wait my turn as sometimes they are backed up because of emergencies but geeze that happens when we go to people doctors. We had been taking our pets to Makai for about 2 years but we will not be going there again. Makai is pretty much like most animal clinics, very pricey and more concerned about the bottom line than really trying to provide the best service. We had discussed changing vets after our last appointment because as usual, the vet was behind schedule and we had to wait. None of our animals really like to go to the vet so having to wait a long time is not easy for either the animal or the human! When we were finally seen the doctor rushed us through the appointment, Im guessing because he was so behind and needed to catch up. We paid the bill for ten minute of the vets time and after that we decided we needed to find another clinic. The service we were getting at Makai was not worth the money or our time. About two weeks ago, while at a neighbors party, the topic of pet care and vet bills came up. Two people said that they had been going to Makai but were no longer. It turns out that they left Makai after hearing that Makai used their businesss facebook page to intimidate and threaten a customer after the customer posted a negative review on line. We did not believe it at first but after searching the internet, we found out that that is exactly what Makai did. Who uses their businesss facebook page and other sites to harass and threaten a customer because of a poor review? Does Makai think that that is the best way to deal with customers who share their opinions? A really smart move on Makais part if their goal was to lose customers both current and future! We read the review left by the customer. What happened to that poor dog and the family was wrong, any way you look at it. Rather than dealing professionally and ethically, Makai refused every attempt by the customer to meet and discuss the issue. The customer has every right to share the information especially when it concerns infectious diseases and the inadequate care that their dog received. Personally, we are grateful that the information was shared. One comment left by Makia accused the reviewer of trying to ruin Makais reputation. It looks like the only one responsible for trying to do such a thing is Makai itself! Any professional and ethical business do not use intimidation and threats when dealing with their customers. People are smart enough to make up their own minds when they read reviews. People should not be threatened because of their opinion. Oahu is a small place and Windward Oahu is even smaller. Opinions, both good and bad, travel fast. I really doubt that Makais use of threats and intimidation will be viewed as a positive. Read Less

I have been a  client for 5 years.  And very recently it saddened me to have to leave Makai after I have done nothing but rave about them to everyone I knew.  Here is my detailed experience. At first, we were very happy with Makai.  It was probably the best vet we had ever been to. We saw Dr. Herzog on his first day there.  We immediately liked him, he genuinely cares about your pets, and he would go out of his way to help us save money at a time when we had a very sick pet that was costing us a fortune to treat.  Last year when our older dog had a seizure, they did a housecall and when we had to make the decision to put him down, they also did this at our house from his own bed which meant the world to us to not have to drag a scared blind dog into a busy vet.  Putting a dog down is such a personal experience, very hard and very sensitive.  They were amazing, every detail made the experience better for us.After that, everything seemed to go downhill. It started with little issues like mis quotes.  Then we started to notice that  anytime we had a question about something, we were told to come in.   We used to be able to call and get a response from our vet who offers advice and assesses before telling you to come in and it used to be that they would only have you come in if they really thought it was serious. But now its anytime.  One time my dog had diarrhea and I asked how long I should wait before I should worry. They told me it could be serious, and to bring him in.  I got scared.  But It had only been a day. They ran all these tests just to guess that he ate something bad and gave us an antibiotic. One time I called  because my dog had another ear infection (one he had been treated for numerous times already) I asked if they could just call in a refill of an ear drop because his ear infection was back. This is common for this  breed, and nothing major.  They wanted us to come in again. My one healthy dog developed skins issues.  We spent nearly $1000  bringing him back over and over, for them to run tests and guess, and prescribe antibitocs.  We ended up finding out at the new vet that it was a food allergy something they never even suggested, and all we had to do was change his food.  .Once my dog got hurt, he had a bandage.  I was worried it was too tight because of the swelling.  When I called the vet agreed and told me to unwrap it right away and rewrap. But the bandage was not the kind you could rewrap, so they told us to come in and have the tech rewrap it.  When I went to leave I was surprised that they were going to charge us $35 to fix their wrap job.  I complained and they did waive the charge. Once my dog had a reaction to a shot they gave him.  They were closed so we had to take him to the pet emergency in Kaneohe.  Because the receipt did not say what the shot was, and Makai has no after hours options,  they could do nothing but keep him and watch him over night which. The  final straw for us was when they gave us pills for fireworks. It was hand written to take 10 pills for our larger dog but only 2-3 for a dog that was only slightly less weight.  When we looked it up, the 10 pills was 2  times over what he should get for his weight. Thank God we checked into it.  Because they were closed, we called the place in Aikahi who replaced the medication.  (we found out the medicine they had given does not calm the animal, only makes them appear sedated but their mind is alert. It's not a sedative but for motion sickness And animals are at high risk for seizure.) It  took a lot for us to leave.  I really was sad about it because of how well they treated our special needs dog.  I really tried to hang in there because I thought it would get better.  But it was just getting worse. The place we have now has aftercare, online records and appt system, well managed office, grooming and education. I do prefer Dr. Herzeg over the vet we have now.  But not enough to stay. I hope that Makai makes changes we might consider going back someday. Read Less

Great care at a good price.  The staff is sooo friendly here, and they didn't give us the run around.  We took a hurt stray cat here and they treated us great.  My husband called our main vet in Kailua along with a few others in the area to see how we should take care of the cat.  The other vets either weren't very friendly because it was a stray (they couldn't wrap their heads around concerned people wanting to care for a stray cat) or they listed hundreds of dollars of tests and treatments before even seeing the cat.  But the staff here was very friendly, treated the cat without doing unnecessary tests and treatments, and charged a fraction of the cost.  They even gave us a break on the total because it wasn't our cat.  They also called back a few days later to follow up.  We were so impressed that we moved the care of our yorkies to them too.  We're happy we did! Our companion animals have been clients of Makai Animal Clinic for over two years. Our dogs have mainly been seen by Dr. Asato and our guinea pigs by Dr. Herzog. The vets at Makai are knowledgeable, professional, and caring. We have been very pleased with the vet techs as well, who have been friendly and efficient. Front desk manager Yvonne is very helpful, too. While we have had issues with the front desk staff taking an inordinate amount of time to complete the check-out process (i.e. take our money), the problem was solved by discussing it with Dr. Asato. The prices at Makai seem about average, not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. They have been super fast and helpful with my insurance claim paperwork, too. I would recommend Makai Animal Clinic without hesitation. Read Less

Read Less

I don't leave my people doctors. Oh and Dr. Asato is also great.Read Less

First time coming to this clinic, from moving from the mainland and I am so unbelievably happy with the service I received. The staff was so friendly. I've never been to a vet clinic where they were so friendly and so focused on making my nervous dog, feel at home. And it wasn't just the receptionist or the technicians, the Dr. Also sat on the floor and continuously petted my lab and played and talked in a soothing voice. I definitly wish all vet clinics were like this. They all made me feel at home as well as my dog! I cannot say enough good things about this clinic! Read Less

Dr. Herzog is an excellent vet.  He takes his time to explain your pet's diagnosis and treatment options.  He is very caring and empathetic.  I truly believe my dog would not be alive today if it wasn't for his diligence and proactive approach to the health of my dog.  When I thought all hope was lost, Dr. Herzog successfully lead my pet through two surgeries, prescribed medicine for his heart, and recommended a change in diet and lifestyle habits.  Now a year later, my dog is healthy and happy.  The best thing about Dr. Herzog is that he really takes time and goes out of his way to communicate with pet parents.  He will call you right after surgery, on the weekends, in the evening after hours, and any time you need to talk to him.  He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and trustworthy.  I highly recommend Dr. Herzog. I've been bringing my two senior dogs (16 and 12) here for years now and I never posted a review?! I'm in Makakilo and I take my dogs to Makai. In the past I have taken my dogs to various clinics all over. Some "affordable" ones smelled disgusting, had extremely rude staff, long wait times and/or horrible bedside manner doctors. And then there are those that you need to pay an arm, a leg and your first born to get your furkid's checkup. I was tired of getting nickled and dimed for nail trims and being charged for tick-infested crate area at another clinic. Our regular vet at Makai is Dr. Asato. We've also been seen by the other doctors at Makai, all great with wonderful bedside manner. Clean clinic, open 7 days a week. Read Less
