Cortland Animal Hospital in DeKalb is an excellent medical facility for your loved pets. Dr. Askew, Dr. Kovalic, and the tech team really went above and beyond to make us feel secure and set proper expectations. They cared for our sick pup for a week, carefully nursing him back to health from pneumonia and other illnesses. They provided us daily updates (sometimes two per day). We even received an update from one of the doctors on a Sunday, which we weren't expecting. The other doctor had texted short videos of our pup and how markedly improved his health had become. Words cannot describe how their professionalism and understanding had tremendously helped my family get through almost losing our little puppy in a week's time. Thank you, Cortland Animal Hospital! Took my dog to recieve a shot. Just had a exam the two weeks prior saying, that "he needs the shot and it will be $28.". .. went in for the shot and I had to pay $60 because he had to have another exam. At first I thought this place was great...very clean and all if the staff friendly. My dog Tucker needed extensive dental work and his shots updated, in those 2 visits ( one pre op) I was charged 594.00..the day I picked him up from surgery he seemed to be doing good, but now I believe hes having small seizures (hes never had these before!) I called them and they told me to take him to the emergency vet in St Charles which of course I did! By the time I got there from Genoa ( where i live) the seizure episode had stopped and they said he was fine. He's been having these seizures daily now!!! I called today to see if i could bring him in while the seizure was happening and they said they had no openings...wtf??? Its so wrong! They said to video them (i already had) they said they could sqeeze him in next Wednesday a week away!, but would have to charge me for an emergency visit!!! They are the ones who caused this (im sure from all vacinations and anesthesia in a 24 hour period) im not getting any help from them now and all they care about is money for an emergency visit, they should see him for free if you ask me!. ...i was on the phone crying because my dog cant walk for God's sake!! I have been going to Cortland Animal Hospital since it opened and followed Dr. Askew from a previous clinic. We have had multiple pets that have been in the best hands at Cortland. Dr. Askew is compassionate and caring and you see it on a regular visit but especially on the toughest day when you have to let a beloved pet go. I have gone to many vets in my life, I can't imagine trusting them to anyone else because our pets and their well being are her and her staffs priority. I LVE the Veterinarians and Tech and all the Staff! I really appreciate all the help. They have helped me with my fur~4 leg baby. I have done price comparisons from St.Charles, Batavia, Geneva, even DeKalb, Elburn Vets,and Cortland was/is the best. I appreciate that I'm on a very low income, and the Vet understands and if my baby/Ellie needs meds they are willing to help me find it someplace else if the cost would be less. This place doesn't do unnecessary test, if there is test(s) to be done they will tell you that amount, and explains the necessity of the test and how to do home care. If you are home and unsure, the staff on the phone will go over every part and explain the baths, pills, or even wound care so you can save money instead of them saying come in and we can show you. I brought my puppy here per recommendation from the Breeder. He had an RSV infection when we brought him home and breeder agreed to continue treatment as long as we continued using this vet office. CAH put him on a new medication 3 days after we brought him home and it seemed to be helping... However he was still slightly wheezy. We consulted with a different veterinary office and they thought it was residual wheezing left over from the cold he had and told us to hold off on immunizations until the wheezing subsided. Last night our puppy broke its leg, when we took him into Cortland vet, Liz (office manager),was extremely rude & unprofessional. When I walked in the door she immediately accused me of no follow up with our puppy's vaccinations... However, agreed when I explained what a different doctor had advised us to do because he had been sick. Liz proceeded to tell me he needed a chest X-ray along with the leg X-rays.. When the X-rays came back Dr. Stephanie told me he had a very bad infection in his lungs and an enlarged heart along with needing to see an orthopedic surgeon she advised we may want to consider putting him to sleep. We made the breeder aware and had her speak to Liz due to the puppy's health warrantee. So needless to say we decided to pursue a second opinion, when we presented this to Liz the office manager she became even more unprofessional, demanding & continued making false accusations. She stated that I misunderstood the Doctor the night before because I was too upset and didn't hear her correctly! I didn't NOT get upset until the doctor told me I should consider putting my puppy to sleep. Not to mention she held our puppy's medical records hostage until my balance from Tuesday was paid in full. Which I may add is illegal. After taking my card # & processing my payment in full yesterday afternoon Liz claimed she wouldn't be able to send the puppy's chest X-ray until consulting with the Doctor.. And that I only requested the orthopedic leg X-rays.. And continued to tell me she would do things "When she had time" and that she "didn't have to stay until 8pm when she was suppose to leave at 3pm Tuesday and that she has a hour drive home so don't start with me". Yikes but not professional for an office manager to be saying to clients. I asked repeatedly to speak to the owner/doctorSheri Askew but Liz continued to tell me she wasn't in.. Who knows if she's even aware she has an office manager treating people like this. I would never recommend this clinic to anyone nor will I EVER bring my animals back to this clinic. I called about putting a cat to sleep, and the lady without knowing the situation. Was a b!t@#. All I was calling for was pricing, I hadn't decided if I was going to bring it there , or get a vet to come to the house, she jumped on me and accused me of cruelty. Very friendly staff. They treat my lab as one of their own. She caught lime disease last summer and the doctors and staff here have been amazing. Her recovery wast so fast. This is just my personal opinion/experience with Cortland. Others may have experienced differently and that's essentially great, but I personally do not recommend if you have a dog prone to issues and/or with a serious medical issue. I have been to Cortland I believe a total of 5 times, and I cannot say that I've left one of those times feeling 100% confident and reassured as to what the issue was nor if the (very expensive) treatment would help. This isn't my first rodeo either, I have a dog that is in and out of vets (poor kid has a multitude of issues), and we're very picky about the care he receives. Even with my last dog there just wasn't much they had to offer us in terms of reassurance and treatment. Not too keen on the "over-the-phone" service I received either. The undercurrent of seemingly irritated tonality was there, coupled with a probable "we're tired of you calling and asking questions". If I'm spending the kind of money that I do at the vet, I expect to hang up feeling confident and clear about the situation. Today will have been our last visit to CAH. All in all, if you need yearly check-ups and other things of that nature I'm sure that's not an issue. But I don't recommend for more serious issues. They're among the cheaper vets in the vicinity, and that might be for a reason in my opinion. Spend the extra money on the vet that knows your breed. Read Less

I started taking my dog and cat to the Cortland Animal Hospital a few years ago when I moved to Illinois from out of state. My family highly recommended them since they were affordable, knowledgeable, and very caring. Besides checkups, I first brought my dog in when his eye was swollen. Dr. Askew knew just by looking at it that the swelling was caused by an infected tooth, which was successfully removed the next day. I have also had a few of my cats teeth removed at the Cortland Animal Hospital which cost half the price as the other animal hospitals in the area. Unfortunately, last week my dog ate something he should not have and required surgery to have it removed. I was very nervous since I have never had a pet that required major surgery, but the Cortland Animal Hospital was very caring and patient toward my dog and I. I recently switched vets. I was bringing my French Bulldog to Cortland for awhile. During a check up I mentioned to one of the Dr's that every morning when I let him out of his crate he would sit and cough for about 10 seconds. It sounded like he was trying to get something out of his throat. He would do this several times throughout the day. The vet felt his throat and listened to his airways and handed him back saying "thats normal, its what frenchies do. One of our doctors has a Frenchie and he does the same thing". I left and immediately called Bethany Animal Hospital and explained what was going on with my dog. Anybody with common sense knows a dog hacking/coughing like that is not normal. I took Louie to Bethany and within 30 minutes of testing they came back and said he had bronchitis and prescribed me some medication. A week later my dog was cough free and I felt much better. I also had Louie tested for giardia (parasitic worms) about 4 times at Cortland and every single time he would test positive. They would say "oh he must have a severe case", or would blame me for not watching my dog when he was going potty. They assumed he was eating other animals poop. I take my dog out on a leash every time so I know he wasn't eating other feces. They would charge me for the tests plus the medication. When I was at Bethany I figured I better get a 2nd opinion about the giardia as well since Cortland wanted to ignore the fact that my dog had bronchitis. After the test they came back and said there were no signs of giardia. Hmmm, imagine that. Im starting to wonder if cortland was just telling me he still had giardia so I would keep spending my money.Read Less

They do not come any better than Dr. Askew. We followed here from another Clinic shortly after she opened here.She truly cares for the animals she treats and uses common sense and compassion. When we had an issue with or dogs health insurance, she immediately went to bat for us  without being asked.having two large American Mastiffs (male 225 and female 170), we knew joint problems may be an issue. She could have prescribed expensive medications and shots, however heard about a glucosimine (sp?) product that she gave us a sample to try, and it has worked fabulously for the last two years and is designed for dogs yet inexpensive. We would not have known there was a difference between these products if it was not for here and her staff.She keeps the facility extremely clean and her staff is very efficient. We highly recommend. I never right reviews but I couldn't let another pet owner miss out. This place is amazing, from the moment you call the people here are caring and really want to help. The vet was amazing, cared about my dog made sure she was as comfortable as possible. They aren't to expensive and I would say we need more vet hospitals like this! I would recommend anyone to go here and especially nervous pet owners. I was very nervous and they made me feel better with just the phone calling making the appointment and as far as my dog(she has an eye problem) it started looking better that same day we took her and have her the medicine they prescribed (we were at another vet for over a month with no big results on her eye)! :) Read Less
