Attention all those who were referred here by Wright Way Rescue.
We adopted a 2 month old puppy two weeks ago and went here for the 72 hour check-up. Our cat's vet is in Portage Park, and we live in Des Plaines so it seemed a more convenient option to explore.
I have to say that the first thing that put me off is the completely grotesque, putrid scent inside the veterinary lobby. I understand that it is inevitable that it smells like animals, but this smelled like a Puppy Mill, it was very intense.
We were seen by a veterinarian, he did not introduce himself, or if he did I really do not remember. He weighed our puppy, barely touched him and told us he was fine. He did not ask any questions other than "how is he doing?" which for new puppy owners doesn't queue much information. The appointment lasted all of 3 minutes. He did not take the dog's temperature, talk to us about flea prevention or heart worm medication. We brought a fecal sample, they charged us for the test and never called back with the results.
When it was about a week out from getting a call from the hospital, we decided to take him to another veterinarian. We took him to a different Des Plaines Animal Hospital and it was like night and day. The office smelled heavenly, the rooms were clean and the staff was exceptional. They gave us a puppy kit, complimentary flea and heart worm protection for one month. They completed his vaccinations, did a comprehensive fecal exam (and called us the next day with the results, even though they were negative!). We actually felt like the dog was examined and are feeling much more confident about our adoption and the health of our puppy! This veterinarian actually cared, unlike our experience at Oak Elm.
I do not wish to discourage anyone from Oak Elm Hospital, this is simply our experience with it and it was not good. It seems that some of the other doctors have a little bit more invested in the business, after all, these 5 star reviews have to be coming from somewhere. Read Less
