Oak Elm Animal Hospital should be investigated for the deplorable "care" they provide to the animals they service. I was in a Foster-to-Adopt (FTA) program with a rescue for a 3 month old puppy. Of the rescue's spay/neuter options, this facility was the closest to our home; so, we paid an extra fee to have the dog spayed here. When picking her up from her spay appointment, she had a large amount of DRY FECES all over her butt and underneath her tail. I didn't realize this until I walked outside with her, and when I noticed she was filthy I took her back in immediately and asked for them to clean her or provide me with wipes to do so. The tech gave me 2 dry paper towels to clean her myself, which did nothing to remove the poop from her body. Her wound area was also poorly cleaned, and she was incredibly pale, cold, and frail (as if they'd given her too much anesthesia or something). Upon taking her to the rescue to complete the adoption process, the rescue cleaned her wound area and attempted to remove the feces twice but failed to clean off the majority of it; therefore, we spent 30 minutes at home afterwards applying a warm compress and wipes to her tail and butt to remove the remaining feces from her coat & skin. In short, the hospital left our puppy laying in her own excrement all day following her surgery, putting her at risk of infection. In addition to notifying the rescue immediately following the incident, I have since filed a complaint with the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation. I strongly encourage pet parents to take their furbabies elsewhere. Read Less

This really is probably the best animal hospital I have ever taken my pet children too. I have taken them to almost every animal hospital in Des Plaines and out of town and by far you feel the love and caring of Dr. Iqbal and his wonderful staff. My 8 year old shih Tzu was in-between life and death after surgery. Dr. Iqbal actually spent the night at the animal hospital watching over my baby boy doggie instead of going home to his family. He saved my loving, furry, pet's life. As soon as we walk in, they know Gizmo, my doggie, by name. Ilse at the front desk is great! She is very pleasant and professional. Just like other reviewers had mentioned, the clinic is very clean and maybe not everyone but I love the candle smell. Glad to depend on you and Thanks! Read Less

Hello my name is Danielle and we just moved out here in Des Plaines from River grove 2 weeks ago i have 3 cats and 1 dog my 2 older cats are almost 3 had them since 2 months old and then the new kitty he's almost a year got him at 6 months and my doggie is 2. Well we all are moved in from a to a new house everything mostly new they all explored as i expected and then my baby (kush) got really sick stopped eating lost weight eyes were very bad looked very weak i called oak elm and explained my worries it was kinda late in the day they never said i couldn't bring him but i chose to wait it out one more day well my appointment was for 5 i called to see if i can come earlier then that and they said yes we get there he's scared we go in the room and the doctor comes in examined him and said he was critical had a fever of 103.5 never did i think that i was shocked just thought he was adjusting to the new house he stayed over nite to get treated the next morning the doctor called me at 830 am and asked me to come in in person and bring a family member my heart dropped i immediately starting crying got my son and daughter and got down there he brought our baby to us and he looked at us and meowed oh boy it was so sad he explained wat he had which was DIP and he had a wet form which was very deadly i really appreciated the way he was concerned about my cat and our feelings and not the money that showed alot of sincerity we thought about it he left us alone with our baby didn't rush us and we decided to put him to sleep and not be in pain we looked horrible walking out people were starring with compasion being the very first time being there it was devasting for the doctor to bring us that kind of news i never once blamed him i was thankful he was honest and by the look of my baby we did the right thing I will continue to go there with all my babies the staff were very nice to thank oak elm and doctor Basran Read Less

My dog Bandit got very sick and Dr. Iqbal met me at the hospital at 10 in the evening (way passed normal office hours) just to take care of him. I came by the next morning to check on Bandit and there was Dr. Iqbal, clearly tired because he was at the hospital until 2am the night before yet still ready to do take care of his patients for the day with a big smile on his face. I could not put into words what Oak Elm Animal hospital is doing for my family and I. Being "wished the best" by several local vets because I like many others cant afford a major surjury, being left with no alternative other than a cheaper short end to a young dogs life, leaving us..a family a member shy. After hours calling several animal hospitals from Chicago to Milwaukee trying to find the slightest bit of compassion and or humanity we felt hopeless. Until we received a call from a family friend refering us to Oak Elm. Coviently enough and unlike most other animal hospitals they are open Sundays. I drove over an hour and brought my dog in and was prepared to wait some time as I had no appointment. I was amazed that within a period of 30 minutes or less I was addressed several times by the busy DR and he even apologized that I had been waiting. After an examinination I was given a clear opinonin as well as several different options. I felt very comfortable with my answer of... what ever you reccomend Dr. The way they care, they way they work with you on an extremly fare and what I feel is generous pricing. It is safe to say without a doubt... we would be a family member shy without the large hearts of the folks at Oak Elm. When everyone else shut their doors, Oak Elms was open.. I will return to and heavily recommend Oak Elm Animal Hospital to all my family and friends. After my story they would have to agree this place is worth the drive. Read Less

Attention all those who were referred here by Wright Way Rescue. We adopted a 2 month old puppy two weeks ago and went here for the 72 hour check-up. Our cat's vet is in Portage Park, and we live in Des Plaines so it seemed a more convenient option to explore. I have to say that the first thing that put me off is the completely grotesque, putrid scent inside the veterinary lobby. I understand that it is inevitable that it smells like animals, but this smelled like a Puppy Mill, it was very intense. We were seen by a veterinarian, he did not introduce himself, or if he did I really do not remember. He weighed our puppy, barely touched him and told us he was fine. He did not ask any questions other than "how is he doing?" which for new puppy owners doesn't queue much information. The appointment lasted all of 3 minutes. He did not take the dog's temperature, talk to us about flea prevention or heart worm medication. We brought a fecal sample, they charged us for the test and never called back with the results. When it was about a week out from getting a call from the hospital, we decided to take him to another veterinarian. We took him to a different Des Plaines Animal Hospital and it was like night and day. The office smelled heavenly, the rooms were clean and the staff was exceptional. They gave us a puppy kit, complimentary flea and heart worm protection for one month. They completed his vaccinations, did a comprehensive fecal exam (and called us the next day with the results, even though they were negative!). We actually felt like the dog was examined and are feeling much more confident about our adoption and the health of our puppy! This veterinarian actually cared, unlike our experience at Oak Elm. I do not wish to discourage anyone from Oak Elm Hospital, this is simply our experience with it and it was not good. It seems that some of the other doctors have a little bit more invested in the business, after all, these 5 star reviews have to be coming from somewhere. Read Less

I adopted my puppy from Wright Way nearly four years ago, and they referred me to this vet. I read the reviews and opted for a better reviewed vet. I also complained to Wright Way and asked why they would align themselves with a vet who they had received so many complaints about, because apparently, I was in good company. Hopefully they don't affiliate with this vet any longer. They are a great shelter and need a great vet.At any rate, my roommate was unaware of the poor reviews and brought her elderly dog there for surgery. The dog contracted kennel cough when she was going into, or fresh out of surgery. Since we did not know that her dog was sick, she was allowed to be around my dog, and now mine is sick too. Neither dog had been anywhere except the yard and house in the last month. No pet store visits, no other vet visits, no dog park, nothing. The vet would not even comp to the fact that the dog had been exposed at their office, even after the emergency vet contacted him and told him that the dog had contracted kennel cough while at his facility. When my roommate called and spoke with him, he still acted like the dog got ill somewhere else. He even stated that the dog could have gotten ill from a dog being walked by the house. We have a privacy fenced back yard that comes nowhere near the front sidewalk. It is inconceivable to me how a vet could not keep pets isolated, especially an old dog right after surgery, and then to top it off, not take any responsibility for it. Neither action shows any concern for the animals he treats, or for the pet owners, for that matter. Stay away!! Read Less

It may be unfair of me to review this animal hospital as my problem may be with the rescue organization, Wagging Hearts.  Oak Elm treated the dog I rescued while the dog was with her foster mom in DesPlaines.  I had a fabulous dog for 5 weeks but I believe illness was missed or not communicated to me by Wagging Hearts.  I had my dog at my vet every week for the five weeks I had her and in her last 24 hours she saw three vets.  As you can imagine this was financially costly but now a month later I am still emotionally a mess.  Dr. Basran appears to have been the vet who could not find a scar on her tummy from being spayed so she had a HUGE incision after he got through; she also had worms; an upper respiratory infection; and the vet who recommended euthanasia felt parvo.  Although I feel more disappointment with Wagging Hearts than with Oak Elm, I feel they carry some of the responsibility for this poor little dog having to go through so much.  I would absolutely not recommend Wagging Hearts and would caution taking a pet to Oak Elm Animal Hospital. I am also surprised to see so many poor reviews for such a great veterinarian. Additionally, who was so difficult to understand? I think I have seen every Dr. there and had no difficulty figuring out what they were saying. Accents yes. Were they speaking a foreign language? No. Am I simply more intelligent than the other four of you? For sure. Did they care for my dogs in a compassionate and caring manner? Absolutely. I drove all the way from the city to see Dr. Basran because I had missed him at my city vet's office. He has never once "oversold" me on anything or told me to "Google" an answer to a question I asked. He has always been gracious, kind and passionate about giving my dogs the best possible care at an affordable price. I do not need a cushy waiting room filled with copies of "Cat Fancy" Magazine or a doggie masseuse while we await our appointment. Another lousy review from a Wright Way adopter.  I thought I was doing a good thing by supporting a vet that supports their services.  I should have stuck with my own, or known when the woman at WW looked at me funny after I said I'd be happy to use "their vet". If you are looking for affordable pet care, I suggest going to petsmart and looking at the wellness care program for the first year or two. The free exam consisted of him weighing her and telling me she was skinny. Well duh, she's a rescue puppy. He didn't look at her eyes, ears, teeth, coat, or anything. He had absolutely no affect with the puppy or me-which I feel Vets should be welcoming and loving with the pets they meet.  The whole appointment lasted all of 2 minutes.  I had questions for him which he gave vague responses to. After her stool lab came back I called and had more questions.  I could barely understand anything the doctor I talked to on the phone said, while he did at least seem friendlier. Read Less

First, I would like to expand my appreciation to Oak Elm Animal Hospital, you have done a wonderful job taking care of my puppies that I have adopted from Wright Way Rescue! The first puppy I adopted (Bryler) had a genetic disease and Dr. Basran took care of him up until we had to put him asleep! He was caring and most of all understood what my daughter, Kalynn and I was going through because Bryler was only 11 weeks old. He did all he could and for that I am grateful! We just adopted another puppy, Cooper, and of course we used Dr. Basran because out of 10 years that I have animals I have never had a vet so caring who explains everything and answers all your questions and concerns that you may have. He examined my little buddy Cooper held him and check him all out, this one is a good healthy puppy. I will transfer both my other pets Chloe and Lola to see him as well as  Cooper. We were referred to this Vet Clinic by the rescue we got our puppy from.We took him here 48 hours after getting our puppy for an intial exam. The doctor was nice enough ( but very hard to understand) he examed our puppy. We brought up a bump on his back ( he wrote off as a pimple) and tha the was sneezing and biting his paws so we were concerned he might have allergies ( his solution an expensive bath wash). He took a feces sample to check for worms, sold us the bath wash and some vitamin drop, and flea drops.. This supposed free exam definatley ended up costing us,...So far, not so bad right..  well a few days later our puppy starts hacking up phlem and sneezing alot more, so we look up a different vet on yelp ( thanks yelpers!) He found within the first few minutes, a huge tick deep in his ear canal that the first dr missed, also that "pimple" was a tick bite! he also has kennel cough and worms!!! The first dr even tested for worms supposivley and never called us with results, we had to call him to complain and then he says everything came back ok, and that its common for puppies from the south to have ticks and kennel cough. I'm thinking then why didnt you catch them!I would not recommend anyone visit this dr, he upsold us a bunch of crap that we could of bought from petsmart, and worst of all we trusted him as a proffesional with our puppy and he missed huge things! Thank God we took him to another vet who has our puppy on the right track now Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

He was caring and most of all understood what my daughter, Kalynn and I was going through because Bryler was only 11 weeks old. He did all he could and for that I am grateful! We adopted out dog from Wright way Rescue on 2/26/11. We were told we had to bring our dog to this vet for an immediate follow-up.Not only was he hard to understand, but he barely touched my dog - during the routine check-up. When we got our dog, he was severely under nourished. We have many questions about food, average weight, shots etc...We were told to Google "Yorkie" to find out information about our dog?We were grossly overcharged for this visit and the follow-up visit, for a post neuter infection. Please don't bring your pet here, it's a scam and based on the number of YELP complaints, you'd think the rescue would find a more reputable partner.
