Dr. Gus and his staff are phenomenal! They provide the extra special patience and attention to our dog and we couldn't be more relieved and happy to have picked them as her vet. I'm not a client, yet but I ran in with a 24hr pup I wasn't sure would make it and they rushed me straight in, the vet checked him out and they wouldn't charge me for the visit!! Our family has been coming here since the 1980's, now that I have my own dog, I decided to return to the same clinic. Dr. True was beyond amazing. He has been so good with my dog Maverick. He is very kind, gentle and a great listener. He gets down low on the floor with him, which I think is above and beyond. Take your pet to see him! The nicest veterinarian I have ever met (Dr.True). He made me feel like he truly cares about my dog's well-being and was so thorough in explaining everything about procedures and results. Extremely patient with my questions. No comparison to our (loved) vet which we have gone to for almost a decade. We will be switching permanently after such a pleasant experience! Love, love, love this place. My dog had a swollen foot for a while and we had no idea why. They suggested another xray of the rest of his body to see. We couldn't afford it at the time and I was super pregnant with my second child and we were in the process of moving. So even though I love my dog, it was just not a priority. They understood and did not bug me once about it. The swelling ended up going away randomly. Also, after we moved, my cat suddenly died and they were very supportive and empathetic. They sent us a card right after it happened (they knew because I had to call them and ask what to do with her body because it happened in my house). The doctors are fantastic, caring and funny. And they put up with my son who asks the most random and ridiculous questions and does not stop talking. Read Less

Our family has been bringing our family dogs to the Downers Grove Animal clinic for 37 years.  Most recently, my husband and I have been bringing our lab to see Dr. Gus for the past year - since she was 8 weeks old.  We adore the staff here.  They are all so sweet, kind, compassionate and understanding.  They're always very reachable as well.  Even when their office is closed they will check emails and respond in a very timely manner.  And whenever we've had to bring our dog in for something, the staff always follows-up with me later in the week to check-in on her.  We truly feel loved coming here and know that our pets are in great hands! I have been so happy with this vet. I have been bringing my pets here since 2006 and they have received amazing care. Dr. Gus not only went above and beyond for my cats but he answered all my questions and made me feel calm when my cat was extremely ill. He took the time to really let me know what was going on and all my options but never pressured me into anything. We have also seen Dr. Walker many times and she is not only great with my pets but extremely kind, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Both doctors are great and I recommend both of them. I absolutely love this veterinary office and cannot imagine bringing my beloved fur-children anywhere else. Read Less

Dr. Gus and his staff take good care of my 4 year old Riley (1/2 cocker & 1/2 Bassett).  She was having issues late last year with puking up vile and having loose stool.  We finally got her set on a prescription food and a 10 mg of Pepcid and she has be perfect ever since.  I also appreciate follow up they do to call and check on how things are going.  I'm glad to keep bringing Riley there! I couldn't Believe the lack of compassion Dr. Gus has.  I took my cat for an UTI which never resolved.  Returned 2 weeks later for follow up.  Unfortunately I was there 30 minuets prior to closing time.  He basically pushed me and my sick cat who was now obstructed to go to the emergency clinic (which cost me over $2,000) because he did not want to take care of him.  I have had this problem with a previous cat of mine and he had done the same thing the emergency clinic did but for a fraction of the cost.  I am a nurse and know when Doctors don't want to be bothered by patients.   That is exactly what Dr.Gus did. I have been taking my dogs here for over 25 years and would not consider any other veterinary practice. Dr. Gustafson (or Dr. Gus) graduated from the University of Illinois veterinary school and is very knowledgeable, compassionate, caring and has an easy going manner.  Currently I have 3 large dogs that are 10+ years each.  They have been seeing Dr. Gus the entire time.  The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, too.  When I call they know right away who my dogs are.  I have referred several people to Dr. Gus and they all continue to take their dogs to his practice for the reasons I mentioned above.  If you are looking for a clinic that has a modern look and feel, then this is not the place for you.  If you are looking to take your pet to someone that treats you and your pet like family with knowledge, caring and compassion, then see Dr. Gus! These negative reviews are puzzling to say the least. My wife and I have brought our cats to Dr. Gus and his friendly staff since 2003. His treatment and personable and even funny bedside manner make for a great experience.  Three years ago one of our cats was struggling with a chronic health issue and was receiving specialized treatment that  extended our cat's life.  Earlier this evening they stayed open past their hours on a Friday night in order to take care of our emergency.  They are absolute professionals and we could not be more grateful Read Less

My family has been to the Downers Grove Animal Clinic twice. We have come away with the overall impression that Dr.Gus (the only vet) is pompous, pushy and downright disrespectful.  All of the qualities you DO NOT want in someone whom you are trusting the health and well being of your pets in.We live so close to here, so we really wanted this to be "our vet". Our 14 year old family cat was brought in to see Dr Gustafson on a Tuesday and was diagnosed with a UTI.   Wednesday my mother was called  with the lab results from the day before.  Later that evening I went to visit my mother and to check on the cat as she was ill.  My mother had a difficult time remembering what she was told re: the lab results.  I then called on Thursday to clarify things for her.  I was initially pleased that I was able to speak directly with the vet..  I directly asked if this looked more like an acute or a terminal illness, especially given the fact that this was an older cat   The vet stated this could not be determined until the repeat lab work was completed.  I asked if the labs remained abnormal what would possible diagnosis and prognosis.  Once again, it was reiterated this could not be determined until repeat labs were done.  I expressed concern that the cat had not been eating for days and barely drinking.  I asked how long a cat could go without eating.  The response I received was, "Cats need to eat every day and you need to make sure she eats."  I felt that this was not taken as a concern at all and completely brushed off.The following morning Fri, I spoke with my mother who informed me there was no improvement well over 48 hours after the antibiotics were started. The clinic was called and Dr Gustafson and was in surgery.  My mother did receive a call back from someone else at the clinic advising her to either make an appointment with an internal medicine veterinarian at VCA in Aurora or take Mollie for an abdominal ultrasound. My mother called the VCA in Aurora and was told an appointment was not available with an internal medicine veterinarian until Monday however to be seen sooner the cat could be seen in their emergency room. We took the emergency room at VCA in Aurora that afternoon. As soon as the staff at the front desk at VCA looked at the cat they took her back right away.  My mother was told a few minutes later that she was in cardiac arrest and was asked to determine code status. Our family cat was what I would consider to be emergently euthanized to end her suffering.  I am realistic that obviously this was a very sick cat and there was little to be done.  With that being said, I feel she deserved the right to die with dignity with her family instead of being rushed to an ER and euthanized in a back room.  It is heartbreaking to lose a long-term family pet.  It is even more devastating for your final goodbye to be when your cat is already dead on an examination table with a towel in her mouth. Numerous phone calls were placed directly to Dr Gustafson throughout the week.  If the concerns were taken seriously, our cat could have been seen again and end-of-life discussions could have taken place.  The fact that the website for the Downers Grove Animal Clinic indicates that hospice care is a specialty makes this even more ironic.  I am extremely livid about the course of events that occurred due to our concerns not being taken seriously and brushed off.  I can honestly say that we will never bring another animal to be seen at your clinic. My overall feeling is that this clinic cares more about running tests and getting paid then actually looking at the whole picture when caring for one's pet. Read Less
