We have been using Olsen Vetrinary for our deaf pit bull Rowdy for 5+ years now and are so thankful that he was suggested to us. Great veterinarian, local to the area, very understanding and compassionate. Dr. Olsen is great about clearly explaining treatment options and the pricing is very fair for the quality of care you receive. For example, we had a situation last year where our dog was attacked and injured after hours (9pm) on a friday night. Dr. Olsen answered, met us at the clinic within a half an hour and an hour later we were leaving with our dog freshly stitched and medicated for a fraction of the cost of what a 24hr animal hospital would have charged. The staff is wonderful and it's clear they all genuinely love caring for animals. You do have to be on your toes if your dog is cat aggressive, as ours is, because they usually have some roaming freely around the building. Read Less

I have been to so many veterinarian offices for my cat over the years, but I think I've finally found the right veterinarian for me. A friend of mine told me about Dr. Olsen. I've been bringing my cat to Dr. Olden's office for a couple years now, and I have nothing but fantastic things to say about this business. Sometimes Dr. Olsen will answer the phone himself, which I think shows that he genuinely cares for each and every one of his clients. Whenever I call, I am always able to be seen the same day. Dr. Olsen has never tried to pressure me into paying for unnecessary procedures or tests for my animals. He is very honest and upfront. When my friends' dog passed away, I believe that Dr. Olsen personally made a trip to their home in order put their dog to sleep in their home. We went here once for vaccines since our vet was booked for a while. To start off, one of my cats HATES being in a cage. So we walk her on a leash. She behaves better than any small dog I've met. They made us put her in one of their carriers. That wouldn't have been too bad if we weren't in the waiting room long past our appointment time. We ended up chatting with the receptionists about the two dogs behind the desk that were all bandages up. They both had been spayed earlier. When we finally got to go back to the room and meet him, he was very impersonal. While we were paying a lady came in to pick up one of the spayed dogs. She came running back in a few minutes later with blood all over her hands. A stitch had pulled and the dog was bleeding. The receptionists handed her some towels and said the dog would be fine. This is a long review but alot of information. I have been going to Hawthorn for years now for my 2 pit mixes. My female Baylee she ended up tearing her acl in her left leg. When i took her to Hawthorn the cost was over the moon for just the basic surgery costing 3k+ for one leg using the sutro. Now that was in March so we decided to wait to say some money for the surgery. All was good till May 7th she went down and tore her other leg. At that time she couldnt walk hardly and i disnt have 6k to spend on her legs. I called some friends and other vets who said Dr. Olsen has done great job repairing acl's. So we called and we got in the same day. Jennifer was soo sweet and took time to talk with me on the phone and not act tho my questions were a inconvenience. When we got there we were a little hesitant but after waiting a few minutes we seen Dr.Olsen and he looked my girl over and explained everything to us along with showing us what he will use in her knee. Me and the husband felt great with all the info and scheduled her surgery thay Fri the 12th of May. We dropped her off i of course am very attached to my girl so i had some tears but the girls were so sweet to me and my girl. They called me when her surgery was over and told me i could call and check up on her the rest of the day which i did befor they closed. The next morning i picked her up at 8:20am and we started her therapy with Jennifer. Dr.Olsen came to check on baylee as well. We had 3 days of therapy along with red light therapy. Dr. Olsen is amazing dont be hesitant about if you can afford his prices because ill tell you that he is so much more reasonable that we ended up paying a little over 1,280 for her leg along with her therapy, Hawthorn didnt even offer therapy and it saved me. 1720.!!! I met Dr Olsen as my dog companion fought his five month battle with cancer. Dr Olsen is the kind of veterinarian I respect for he was honest, direct, and clearly laid out our treatment options. He was also respectful of our decisions. But why I recommend Dr Olsen is because he treated not just my dog but also me. As different aspects of the disease showed themselves Dr Olsen was there to calm me down and help me focus on helping my companion. He taught me how to apply bandages, how to understand severe vs. minor wounds, and, most importantly, how to know, understand, and accept when the end had come. Dr. Olsen was always available in person or over the phone for me and my dog, even on Thanksgiving and New Year€s Eve. When time had come Dr Olsen came to our home to minimize the stress on my dog and my family and helped my dog pass rapidly without any pain. And a few days late Dr Olsen kindly gave us a final paw print and locks of my companion€s hair prepared by his receptionist to help us remember the good times with our companion. Finally, Dr Olsen is also an active member of our Edwardsville community (he is on the school district board amongst other commitments) and clearly applies his veterinarian oath to work for the benefit of society in all aspect of his life. Love Dr. Olsen office and his staff. I have been going here for years. I have used this office for years. When I was having problems with one of my cats. They were always quick to get me in and took great care of him. When it came to the time that my cat passed the staff went above and beyond. They did everything they could to keep him going but when it was his time the one the vet tech in the office not only was there for my cat medically but there for me emotionally! NEVER TAKE YOUR PET HERE!! If zero stars was an option I'd go with that... I brought my cat in to see Dr. Olsen for the first time. He was diagnosed with a UTI (common in male cats). Dr. Olsen said that my cat needed to be catheterized and kept over night. He then called the following day to say that my cat was blocked up again so he re-catheterized my cat and kept him over the weekend. The doctor went out of town over this weekend, but decided to clear my cat to be sent home on Monday without seeing him first (which he admitted to). I went to pick my cat up after work on Monday and the nurse yelled at me for trying to open the carrier in the office to see how my cat was feeling. When I got my cat home and let him out of the carrier, he was dripping blood WITH the plastic parts of the catheter STILL SEWN INTO HIM and he was covered in his own pee from laying in it all weekend long... I have the pictures to prove it... To add to that, my cat was sent home from Olsen's office with a completely blocked bladder. Olsen and his staff did not even check on the state of my cat's bladder before sending him home with me. I had to rush my cat to the emergency hospital, where they told me that surgery was required because his area was too irritated to try to catheterize him again. When my cat got into surgery it was discovered that only 1/4 of his bladder was left because Olsen used outdated medicine (a hard catheter) on my cat which punctured a hole into his bladder. The emergency vet clinic was unable to save my cat due to this. To top it all off... Olsen still charged me for the "work" he did on my cat. When I went to his office to explain why I refused to pay the bill, he threatened to take me to collections. Heartless.Read Less

Dr Olsen was one of the only veterinarian that took the time to come to my aid when our German Shepherd went down. Needless to say our Pepper didn't make it. He is so caring about animals that after we lost Pepper, we swore if we got another dog he was the best choice to take care of our animals. We got our Boxer and Doc Olsen took care of her until she couldn't take that long of a car ride, car sickness, ugh we found someone close that took care of her until her passing this year. I have been with Dr. Olsen for the past 7 years. My dog that passed use to growl at her other vets (there was 5 vets in that office & she growled at each one) at each exam. When I changed my vet, she snarled at Dr. Olsen on the 1st visit only. Dr. Olsen treated her for the last 4 years of her life. Barrett passed away when she was 14 years old. I got my dog when she was 1 1/2 years old. She was severely abused by a man. She hated all men, even my husband. My dog only loved my grandson & I. I had Barrett for a year before my grandson was born. When he came home from the hospital, my dog became her protector. (I am raising my grandson.) She found her purpose in life. They grew up together. Barrett thought my grandson was her baby. She even loved to suck on his pacifier. My sister's lady friend father became ill. He had a dog on the farm in the boonies in Arkansas. I wasn't ready for another dog so soon after losing my other girl but I was afraid that she may be put down. So I decided to take her. She was 5 years old. My sister drove (from Oklahoma) to Arkansas to Illinois to bring her home to me. I have had Jordan now for 2 years. She has been a joy in our family. I found out how ill she was after the 1st year of having her. But I know as long as Jordan is in the hands of Dr. Olsen, she have a long and happy life with us. Dr Olsen was terrific! Other vets told me my dog needed surgery for an ACL tear and he found that she did not have a torn ACL . He ended up saving us money and he was also half the price of every local vet for the surgery for an ACL repair. Dr. Olsen is a great veterinarian! When my other vet had failed helping me with my shih tzu and what I could do for his sensitive stomach, I called Dr. Olsen. I was so shocked when he answered the phone himself and that he answered it on a Sunday. He was more than willing to talk to me and give me some advice. I then decided to switch vets. He has been great with my dog and cat. His office help is also very nice and offered some food to see if my dog liked it (free of charge). I am a physician in the neighboring town of Highland. My wife and I have trusted Dr. Olsen to taking care of our pets for 5 years. He has shown to be compassionate, friendly, and affordable. We have lived in various parts of the country and have been to many vets. He by far is the best we have ever had. One incidence that occurred with my cat was when she got into a fight with some wild animal in our backyard. The wound was just nasty, her vitals were diminishing fast, and Dr. Olsen came into his office after hours. This is something to be expected of a healer, but Dr. Olsen reminds you of a FDR (Roselvelt) kinda guy. He is a quite, but loving and sensitive person towards animals. He has a nature about him that calms animals and this is overall why we go to him. His office is pet friendly, not the Taj Majal, and neither are his prices. He is very affordable. If you are considering a caretaker and doctor for your pets, I would strongly advise you to trust this testimonial because it comes from our hearts. First off, Doc cares about his animals and that is a fact. The office is clean and has been updated. It doesn't smell of cat urine and only one cat is in the office hanging out. He had some turnover a year or two ago in the office but now has wonderful, caring ladies running the office. Going to his clinic isn't like stepping into a high-end vet clinic with gorgeous new furniture etc. But it's a true vet office. You aren't in there for an "experience" you are in there to get your family pet taken care of by a doctor who is up on all of the latest procedures and will hopefully be able to help your sweet pet get better. As with mine, she had to be put down due to congestive heart failure and his compassion was amazing. Everyone in the office was so supportive. Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR BELOVED PET TO THIS CLINIC. THIS VET KILLED MY DOG. He said everything was fine. Then later that week she started howling and crying in the middle of the night. So we took her to Hawthorne and she ended up having 5 things wrong with her. The next day she only had a couple hours left. So we put her down. We now call Olsen Veterinary Clinic: Home of the Hack Vet. They overcharge and didn't get billing right. It also has cats crawling EVERYWHERE. They let them roam in the office. Dr. Olsen has been my vet for several years. He treats my animal friends with compassion and has an innate sense of diagnosis which is always backed up by tests or x-rays. He made a house call to euthanise my large dog (about 15 miles one way) saving the pain, anxiety and stress Bellamy would have suffered. There have been several neuterings and spayings over the years plus emergency care when needed. His good advice with small problems is well worth listening to. The office staff is competent, very friendly and go beyond what is required of them to make the animals feel safe in what could be an anxious office visit. One of the girls even stopped by the house to check on the victim of a hit and run driver with a broken leg and pelvis. Dr. Olsen had done a very good job of inserting a pin in the dog's leg. A couple of weeks ago my 1 year old cat was really lethargic and acting very weird. One morning she didn't make it to her litter box and knew something was very wrong. I called Dr. Olsen's office at 9AM and told them that I was really worried and wanted to know what I could do to help her. They put me on hold for minute and then got back on and told me to bring her in at 9:30am. The Dr. on duty was excellent with her. She performed some tests and discovered that my baby was sick. I took my dogs sample up to Olsen and dropped it off. The girl at the desk told me they would call me in 1 hour to let me know what kind of worms he had. Well I called every single day up till today (5 days) to get his results and the girl tells me, "OH, he doesn't have worms." Well there was a worm in the sample that was alive and crawling around in it. I asked her about the worm I showed her and she said that it was "too old" to tell. Well it was alive when I dropped it off! Now I have to pay for his stool sample when they probably just threw it all away and don't even give a crap about my dog. What a great Vet. haha. Read Less
