We recently boarded our 1 1/2 year old dog, Hazel, who has been a patient of Dr. Wierschem since the age of 8 weeks, at Kankakee Animal Hospital for 7 days, while we went on vacation. My husband dropped Hazel off on April 24th and pre-paid our bill because we had someone scheduled to pick up Hazel prior to us getting back from vacation. It was recommended she get a dog flu shot and a kennel cough shot, so both were to be given the day she arrived to be boarded. When a family member went to pick up Hazel on Sunday, they were told Hazel was aggressive and didn't let anyone near her. They said she barked and growled at anyone that got near her. They wanted my brother to muzzle her so they could give her the shots that she was scheduled to get at the beginning of her stay. My brother called me to tell me they wanted him to muzzle her and she was upset and growling and barking at him. I said not to worry, we would pick her up on Monday because I knew the clinic was closing at 10am and we wouldn't be arriving back from the airport until 10:15am. I was worried about Hazel and wanted to be reassured that she was ok and that it was no problem to pick her up on Monday, so I called the clinic and got the answering service who kindly contact Dr. Wierschem on the back line at the clinic. She wouldn't take my call. She wouldn't even speak to me to reassure me that Hazel was ok, which made me more upset and worried. Having her assure me that Hazel was ok would have helped not only me, but my worried 9 year old, who couldn't wait to see her dog. Since picking up Hazel, we have learned that everyone was afraid of Hazel. A vets office that offers treatment and boarding for pets, afraid of a dog?!? I don't understand. We were never contacted about any issues they were having or that they we unable to give her the recommended shots prior to her stay. Then to try and give the shots to her the day she is leaving?? Doesn't make any sense. The front desk staff has always been wonderful with Hazel and our family. I'm sure we are not the only family with a dog that gets a little nervous/scared at the vet's office. Having a vet that is caring and understanding to your situation is important, and I feel Dr. Wierschem dropped the ball on this one.Read Less
