This vet is excellent. We take our exotics (guinea pigs) here and love them. GP's don't need to go to the vet often but when they do it's typically an emergency. We've needed to get in urgently twice and both times they fit us in within an hour. They even stayed late to see us. Tonight we noticed our GP had lost tons of fur. We called at 5:30 and they close at 6 pm. Even though we've only been there a couple times they told us to leave right away and they'd see us. The vet we had tonight was very compassionate. We thought our GP had a skin illness that could be treated topically but sadly it turns out she has an internal mass and she won't be with us much longer. Quite a shock. Of course, an expensive surgery was an option but in our experience GPs are so hard to save and it's rare they make it in situations like this. Plus, ours is already fairly old. The vet advised us well and gave personal examples of making tough decisions like we faced tonight and talked about how the right thing is different in all situations. We didn't feel guilty for leaving with pain meds to keep her comfortable instead of having an emergency surgery we couldn't afford. Our sweet pig will live out the rest of her days comfortably at home getting the best salads we can give her. In our previous experiences here we've also felt they were knowledgeable and compassionate. We've met some very neat pet parents here, tonight it was a Rooster named Roy. Everyone we see here seems to love this vet. We've always felt the staff went out of their way to help us and has good bedside manner, especially for the exotics. They've always been able to determine what the issue is and can clearly explain the facts while being sensitive. It does cost more but you get what you pay for. Speaking from experience, an affordable regular vet that will see exotics but that doesn't specialize in them can kill your pet. Dr Harris and staff know their stuff! We'd recommend them for sure!Side note: We cremate all our pets once they're gone and Animal Care and Medical Center has good pricing for these services. I couldn't believe how much other vets wanted to cremate a guinea pig. The costs here to have ashes returned was over 50% less than the cheapest place I found. They are very sensitive and caring. Brought a parakeet here, said she had impacted eggs and gave me an oral antibiotic. Explained bird was hand shy and they said no problem-will be fine. Stress of impaction and daily antibiotics killed her within days of visit. Charged over $300.
Brought mate to them. Never did anything other than visual exam. No feces test, no blood work, nothing. Also gave antibiotics. Said he had fat liver then fluid in lungs. Gave him antibiotics for 2 weeks nothing. My fault for believing in the vet. Even after a week of care at their clinic overnight bird died day I brought him home after they said he was doing much better. $1300 bill!
For the sake of your animal do not go to the Animal Care and Medical Center. They don't care about your pet, just the $$$$.
I also took turtle there for beak trims which is how I became aware of their avian clinic-unfortunate for my two birds who died. Looking for new reptile vet. Will not bring him back there.
Now I go out of my way to Niles Animal Hospital. Had another sick parakeet and he got fecal, blood work and x-ray for $125!!! He is still alive. Birds were under the weather when molting. they gave us a probiotic and our birds only go there if they need their talons clipped.

My perspective differs quite a bit compared to the previous reviews. This veterinarian (Dr. Harris) is the only vet that I will take my exotic birds to, since he truly specializes in their care. I have taken my birds (Congo African Greys and an Umbrella Cockatoo) to a couple of different exotic bird vets and I've been extremely dissatisfied with all of them, except for Dr. Harris. The vets at these other locations were either too incompetent to diagnose the bird with an ailment, or they were scared to death of the birds. Now if you advertise yourself as a bird vet, you should be prepared for all sizes and shapes of parrots, and Dr. Harris is one of those vets. He has seen my female Grey quite a few times due to her having issues with laying eggs. She is not a breeding parrot, so normally when she develops an egg, she needs medical assistance to pass it. We have gone to Dr. Harris every time she has had this issue, and she always comes out of his care as a healthy bird. I also love his staff. They are all extremely caring towards your animals, as well as you, the pet owner. They also give courtesy calls after your visit to check on the health of your pet. The only downfall with this vet office is the very high price you'll pay to have your pet cared for here. I will agree with the other Yelpers that Dr. Harris' fees are extremely high. But in the case of my exotic birds, the cost is certainly worth it because I know they will receive great care. If you have just a general cat or dog and you are very price conscious, then you may want to check another vet. But if you have specialty and exotic animals, this is the place to take them. Read Less
