I really like this place. Everybody that works there is super friendly and very knowledgeable. As far as surgeons go Dr Maxwell is by far one of the best in this area. Compassionate and thorough. Been talking my cat to Hillcrest and they never did my cats blood pressure and my cat has double what is normal blood pressure and dogwood found it and now she is on medication to get it back to normal. High blood pressure can cause stroke, blindness, heart attack, ear perforations and death not to mention discomfort. Dogwood also found kidney disease which requires a lower protein prescription diet and Hillcrest had her on high protein over the counter diet and that would have caused kidney failure much quicker. Definitely recommended. Ill never take my pets to Hillcrest again. If its first time going to dogwood mondays and Tuesdays are easier days to get in fast if necessary but they deal with emergency visits promptly. My cat is 17 years old and im glad now i took her to dogwood because her quality of life will be much better now. Read Less

My little Pom Gracie was injured when she was attacked by a loose neighborhood dog who climbed our 5 foot fence to get in our yard. She was badly injured and required emergency surgery at the ER Vet Clinic. We then followed up with our vets at Dogwood for continuing care. This was the single most traumatic thing we have every been through and to say that were we overwhelmed with fear, worry and anxiety is an understatement. Gracie struggled to heal, getting an infection and l...osing more tissue that died as a result of her bite wounds. She will require another surgery, however, until then she needs twice daily bandage changes and care for her open wound. I cannot express enough how wonderful the entire staff at Dogwood has been to Gracie and to us. Dr Katie is her primary doctor and we love her so much, but I have to say that each and every single doctor, vet tech and staff member was involved in Gracie's care and are the reason she has healed as well as she has. There are no words adequate enough to express my gratitude and love for everyone at Dogwood. They greet Gracie each morning and treat her as if she were their own. Debo was a pup we beloved, cherished, and grew into our family well. He was allergic to life and had many difficulties, but the staff at Dogwood seemed to help every step of the way in his growth, treatment, and eventually- his passing. It hit us hard when we found out about his cancer, and seemed like his life was filled with difficult steps, and he sure went out with a bang. The staff was supportive throughout the entire time of his passing. Even though we had his paw pri...nt, we were still missing our beloved boy. Our dog, Milly, blew out her ACL a few years ago. We had delayed the surgery due to scary high estimates from other vet clinics. There were few options in Rockford and we were told that we needed to go to Madison. Well, we met Dr. Maxwell and Dogwood and they were affordable...and great! Dr. Maxwell explained the lower priced option and the more advanced (more expensive) solution. We never felt pressured to choose either. He said that even though our Golden Retriever was 95 lbs, he felt like the lower priced (fish line) option would probably work just fine. He would know more once he opened the leg. Well, he said the joint was riddled with arthritis and it was badly damaged....but the lower priced option was exactly what he did. Milly seems to be doing just fine. On a different note, my wife is a nurse and she was super impressed with the suture line: The stitches were all internal. The dog never licked the wound and it healed beautifully. Also, the dog wasn't in la la land the night of the surgery....even though she was filled with drugs. She was able to go outside and use the bathroom - on her own. I had heard horror stories about having to carry out the dog for a week or two. I can’t find the words to say how grateful I am for the staff at Dogwood Pet Hospital. One of my fur babies has been sick for quite some time. When I first took him in, they were wonderful. Our vet called to check in on him after our visit with his new medication, they just seemed to genuinely care. Sadly, I had to have my poor Diablo cross the rainbow bridge this week, and I have never seen a staff be more caring and supportive than here. It was one of the hardest days of my... life, they made sure I had plenty of time with him, explained everything thoroughly as this is my first time in this situation, and they were so good to him! I wanted to be there to make sure he wasn’t alone, but I now know that he would have been surrounded by love anyway as the staff seemed to love him nearly as much as I did. If I could give you guys a 10/5 I would. Today I received a sympathy card with personal thoughts and signatures from the two vets who saw him, now I’m in tears but again so grateful. You guys are amazing and a true blessing. My business and recommendations will always be to Dogwood Pet Hospital. Thank you for all you do. I can't thank you enough for the caring, kind, knowledgeable staff at Dogwood. Our beloved Rufus was confirmed to have stage 4 lymph node cancer, and no one could have broken it to us better than them. He got the best care and treated like he belonged to them. They also gave him water, and a cheese treat. His last 2 months of life were very precious to us. He passed last Monday, a little over 2 months from his diagnosis,,,peacefully at home. I would recommend Dogwood in the warmest, kindest sence !! They truly care for animals, in the warmest way. Your practice is truly 2nd to none.. Soo many thanks Cathy Peek. Our puppy, American Bully about 25#. 4 months old. Jumped off chair and hit floor awkwardly. Broke off the equivalent of your kneecap on her right rear leg. Dogwood performed the orthopedic surgery to fasten back in place. Followed up to remove the hardware and restitch. Little Bully puppy did terrific throughout the process. A couple weeks after the stitches removed we received followup call to verify how our Bully was doing. Mind you its a1.5 hr drive for us to get there. Service was great. Post Operation instructions were clear. Followup very much appreciated. All around great experience. Also, way more cost effective than going to the clinic the local vet recommended. Hopefully never need surgery again, but, Dogwood will be my pet hospital of choice if needed. Read Less

Extremely friendly staff. My dog always comes home happy. I get the feeling they truly love the pets that visit there. It is always very clean there. Be sure to be very clear on food directions. I had been taking my rescue dog here since I got her, about 3 years and then I had a VERY unpleasant experience with a vet here. My dog had been very sick, losing weight and hair. While I was going to this office every two to three weeks over a several month timeline, she went from 88 lbs to 67 lbs. Each visit was expensive and there was never an answer. Finally it was time for annual vaccinations and the vet said (I will NEVER forget this) no point in vaccinating, the dog will be dead in a month. She then told me what disease my dog was dying from and said she had seen it before and it is always fatal. I was shocked at her flippant attitude and terrified at the thought of losing my dog. I went home and looked up this fatal disease. My dog did not exhibit any of the symptoms so I called another vet and took the dog in asap. I let them know what had been diagnosed at Dogwood, so we were ushered in a back entrance and put in a small exam room. It took that vet approximately 4 minutes to rule out the fatal diagnosis. He did a skin biopsy and had me change dog food. My dog is now 3 years older, 89 pounds, has all of her hair and is active, playful and healthy. Oh, and she is vaccinated and NOT dead! I would not ever recommend that anyone take a family pet here for anything other than basic treatment. If something unusual comes up, they appear to guess and treat symptoms rather than find out what the real problem is. Even with visits, x-rays and the biopsy, I spent less to get results then I had spent to be told my dog was good as dead. Read Less

Very good place. The entire staff was super nice. Dr. Katie was the best vet I could have asked for. Rabbits have always been special to me and she took care of my baby Ava (which we shortly realized was actually a boy) and she helped him as if he were her own. I made the really difficult decision to put Ava down after a few months being paralyzed and she was very caring through the whole process. We love Dr Maxwell at Dogwood Pet Hospital. I live an hour and a half away and I make the trip there because I trust him with my dogs. This is the second generation of dogs that go to him. (25 yrs with all of them) His surgery skills are impeccable. I only trust Dr Maxwell to do surgeries on my babes. Office staff and the other Doctors are great as well. One of the few places to take a bearded dragon. The got us in same day. Dr. Katie was very helpful, she knew all about beardies and taught us a lot. She took her time and explained everything so I could write it down (just getting over a broken neck, so memory is not great right now). We left with all the information we needed and medicine as well as a print out of information all about beardies. And, the treatment has been working! love, love, love, love, love dog wood!! have been taking our pets there for 11 years! our oldest girl, pebbles loves dr. maxwell and the staff is always so friendly. the doctors really know what they're talking about and will explain any questions you have. if you have a question, you can even call them up and they'll give you a call back when they have time. they never try to push procedures on you, and will help work around your budget with what really needs done at that appointment. dr. katie is one of the most sympathetic people i've met. we had to put our 3 year old baby boy down recently due to major health issues. she was right there crying with us, very supportive, and very helpful. that was the hardest day of our life so far, but we'll never forget the kindness we were shown. when we first moved to virginia beach with our 3 year old (he was 1) we had a very hard time finding a vet that even came close compared to the quality you get with dog wood. it is very clear these people love animals, and their passion is helping them. i cannot recommend them more! We left our dog in the care of Dogwood being assured that they would call us if anything was wrong or send our dog to the hospital across the parking lot if medical attention was needed.  When we picked our dog up after 6 nights, we needed to take him to the animal ER immediately and found he had lost 1/3 his body weight, was severely dehydrated and had complete kidney failure.  We had to put him down that night.  When Dogwood was asked what had happened we were told he had eaten all his meals but one, had diarrhea one day and had drank water fine.  When asked how they explain the condition we found him in they had no answer.  When asked to refund the fee we paid them for watching him we were denied.  DO NOT SEND YOUR PET TO THEM!!
