Because I come from a family of six veterinarians, I feel very strongly about the care that my pets receive and the interaction between the veterinarians and me.We have been taking our dog and cat to Capital Illini in Chatham and have always been treated with the upmost respect and wonderful care. I switched to them after the vet that we were going to decided to perform a biopsy on my dog while she was being boarded. The vet had my cell phone number. The biopsy was benign, although I was charged for the procedure.At Capital Illini, you are never forced into procedures. If a phone call is warranted, you receive one. The vet takes the time to discuss options and will make sure you understand. You are part of your animals healthcare. I have never been disappointed with the care my animals have received from them. Dr. Martha Armour is our 'vet'. She has gone 'above and beyond' to save our dog. Without her caring and concern he would not be alive. I have called on her so many times and she has always been willing to try and help our Fuzzy. The caring doesn't end with Dr. Armour. The staff is always so caring and ready to do whatever they can. From experiences I've had, caring and concern such as we've experienced with Dr. Armour is not always there. My 93 year old father has a nine year old dog that is his best friend and trusted companion, a black lab mix named Marty. Marty had a big fatty tumor on his chest and front right shoulder area, that was causing him to limp and generally have a  lower quality of life. For an older dog, surgery is always risky, so we debated whether to do the procedure or not, and finally decided it was worth the risk.Everyone at Capitol Illini was wonderful and took great care of our special friend. He had the surgery which removed a 4.5 lb. tumor, stitched him up, and monitored him for several days along with the Animal Emergency Clinic of Springfield for the overnight care. The love, skill and dedication all these people showed was amazing.The stitches have been removed, and Marty is like a new dog, very spunky, great movement running around his yard, and making his best friend a very happy owner indeed. Was blown away as to their ability to evaluate and administer the life saving management. Been bringing my pets here for about 13 years. We primarily see Dr. McCall. The doctors and staff are among the most caring, compassionate and personable folks you'd ever want to meet. My dog LOVES to go to the vet, because Dr. McCall is the Bringer of Cookies! The staff was very understanding and mourned with us when we had to put our cat down last year. Some folks say Capitol Illini is expensive, but I say that you get what you pay for. I wouldn't dream of taking my pets anywhere else. Read Less

Capital Illini in Springfield is the best vet clinic for soo many reasons! Dr Armour is a wonderful vet! You can tell that she loves animals! She is very knowledgeable, compassionate, Awesome bed side manner, and she will call you on her own time if your pet needs anything! Dr Helgin is wonderful as well! The Assistant's especially Heather are Awesome! It all starts when you walk in the door with the wonderful girls @ the front desk! Some time ago I came across a turtle in traffic on Veterans Road and managed to get him out of it. However, when I did so I found that his shell was cracked. I called my vet's office to see if they could help me out, but they didn't have a reptile person so they suggested this place.When I got there they told me that their reptile guy was busy and couldn't help me. (Having waited on my own vet during my last appointment while she saw to an animal that had been hit, I was annoyed that they couldn't just come look at the turtle and tell me if it could be helped or not.) They also wouldn't just take the turtle to see what could be done for it. My options were to make an appointment a few days into the future, meanwhile holding onto a possibly dying turtle... or (without even seeing if it could be helped first) they offered to put it to sleep. They also offered me several other options I had to put the turtle to sleep.The only saving grace was that they mentioned another vet place that had a reptile guy, though in their wording they said that, "Maybe I could get in to see him." As though animals only deserve your time and help when there's a fee being paid for it.As I said, I have a vet, but if I was ever in the market for another one... I would not come here. Read Less
