Hawthorne Animal Hospital

I have been going to Hawthorne Animal Hospital for years.Several years ago l started seeing Dr. Schwartz,at the Troy office. I have a 14 year old male dog that was going blind and finally did so several years ago.Even though he was blind he would make it around our house inside and out by putting his nose out first.Yes he ran into things and got turned around and I would have to rescue him.But in September we moved and things changed drastically for our little guy.He does have some underlying health problems but the anxiety and being disoriented became increasingly more. He had to be taken out on a leash to go potty .We now had stairs,he started to loose his hearing.In between all of this l called Dr.Schwartz she always called me back and let me tell her all his and my struggles.I have never seen a Dr. as compassionate for animals as she is and feel so blessed to have her on my team.After seeing Dr.Schwartz on numerous occasions she brought up to me that Buzz needed his teeth cleaned.I understood completely but having so much on my plate I tried to take care of one thing at a time.After our most recent visit my husband went with me since we wasn’t sure if he would be coming home or not.The Sunday before our visit he was lethargic all day and had a very faint heart beat.After giving him a exam she again brought up his teeth... l had told her before l had a dog that had to get teeth cleaned and he would not eat,drink,and had fever.Buzz was eating drinking and had no fever..Buzz would not in no way let me look at his teeth.I used to actually brush them but after all his anxiety and going blind that was no longer going to happen.So Doc looked at his teeth and my husband was able to see.He had not only really bad tarter and gum disease but some possible bone loss and abscess.We went there thinking he was not coming home ,now here he is sitting next to me.I just wanted to thank Dr.Schwartz for all the kindness she has shown to my animals.Without her persistence about his teeth I would not known how bad they were.He is on antibiotics and inflammatory meds and having teeth done on Tues. Dr. Schwartz is super nice and knowledgeable. I was previously at another vet with my cats and moved to Hawthorne when she moved and we acquired a rescue dog. Ella (the rescue dog) was in a little bit of rough shape when she joined our family Dr. Schwartz and her staff were wonderful. They planned out the best things to address first for the well being of Ella and throughout the past month she has become a completely different dog. We will continue going to Hawthorne for all of our animal care needs moving forward. Read Less

Dr. Schwartz and team take care of our three dogs (two of which are senior), and all three of them love everyone in the office. Dr. Schwartz takes the time to build a relationship with your pets so when she is checking them out, they don't feel vulnerable. They trust her. We trust her. She is incredibly thorough, patient, kind, informative, and easy to talk to about any and all concerns. Any time we take our dogs in for not feeling well (which happens more often than we want with our senior pups), their office calls to check on them. In all of the vets I have been to, this has never happened. Their customer service is amazing. Added perks for this location: free dog washing station (shampoo included) and patient-only dog park (ensures all dogs are current with vaccinations). We love this vet! (They also take CareCredit.) I was quoted incorrect prices on several occasions. The staff was short and snotty on the phone for anything other than simply scheduling an appointment. My dog saw Dr. Veronica Schwartz. My dog has a chronic illness and, on our first couple of visits, my impression of Dr. Schwartz was that she was kind and dedicated; however, after several pricey procedures, blood work, and tests followed by long-term medications--which were also costly (over $100/month, more than I can afford to spend even on myself per month)--I explained that my finances were strained and, although I want to do the best I can afford to do for my dog, I wondered if there were other medications that we could try that would be less costly. I was told yes, but they are not the best methods and, if I chose them instead of what was recommended (again over $100/month on medication alone), then this would be what they call "benign neglect" because I know that my dog could get better treatment of the illness, but I choose not to provide it.   WOW!   This is not how to speak to a patient/client. I would never recommend this vet or this hospital to anyone. Read Less

My family has just switched over to this clinic in Troy and I can honestly say that I am impressed. The staff and vet have always been exceptionally friendly and they all care for my animals as if they were their own. The pricing there is also very reasonable and they have never tried to charge additional and unnecessary fines. Read Less

We bring both of our dogs to Hawthorne. There is an incredible staff here! Dr. Schwartz is extremely thorough and goes above and beyond to ensure quality care. All the techs there remember our dogs by name and are so sweet. We moved to St. Louis, and still make the drive out here every few months for the dog park and appointments! Thanks guys! Read Less

Wow! Dr. Selbert is absolutely the best! She takes care of our two sight hounds, Ziggy the whippet and Straty the greyhound. Dr. Selbert has always provided excellent service. I've never seen a vet get down on the floor to exam a dog. That's exactly what Dr. Selbert does every time we come in. She treats our dogs as if they were her own. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Their prices are comparable to other vets in the area but I wouldn't go to any other place. You can't get better than this when it comes to veterinary care. Read Less

We bring 3 pets to the Troy clinic with Dr. Selbert and absolutely love the care and attention our animals receive. Very friendly and clean. They take a real interest in the pets. The Agility training is outstanding also. Read Less
