Hendricks County Animal Hospital

I took my 9month old puppy there the 8th of January 2016. He is a large breed lab and german rottweiler they where very nice and helpful. He had chewed a ball up and had some stuck in his stomach that had to be removed. They called me and let me know what they did and when they where going to do the procedure and when they where done. He is doing very well and growing Diablo my puppy is here today all thanks to this hospital and Dr. Stokes. I cant thank them enough for helping my Diablo thank you and keep up the wonderful work. I have been happy with HCAH for years, but things have changed recently. The staff has had a large turnover, and my dogs' last check up left me very uncomfortable. MY concerns about my dogs were dismissed, and I did not get to see how the new staff interacted with my dogs. Just not comfortable there anymore! A year ago I would have given 5 stars. Read Less

Always fantastic and great with all my animals. I have turtles, cats, and dogs, and Dr. Portwood is an expert in all their care and my animals love her. They are willing to work on billing and help me understand what is going on to better understand how to help take care of my pets. My dog had cancer and they were with me all the way up until the end. I love them there and will never change vets. I highly recommend them to anyone who asks where I go.Read Less

Over the years we've had need to visit different vets.  Recently moved back to town and selected this office after visiting others.  Everyone is very kind sincere and pay excellent attention to pets. Outstanding care and they handle exams and shots with the owners in the room where other offices take your pet to another area out of sight.  Reasonably priced, on call emergency service and all the vets are great.  Highly recommend to pet owners. Was given a voucher at the Hendricks county animal shelters shot clinic to have my dog spayed for 50.00.This hospital was on the list of places that was supposed to honer this voucher.They didnt and gave me the run around about pricing.They convenienly lost the voucher,gave me the run around about pricing and ended up charging me 160.00.Way to help out low income people.Also...when i went to pick her up,the girl tried to drag her down the stairs with the leash when post op instructions clearly state NO STAIRS!I I WILL NOT be bringing her back! Dr. Stokes is an excellent equine vet. He is very knowledgable and does a lot of teaching for you the owner while he is attending your horses.He always comes day or night to take care of my sick horses. I highly recommend him Read Less

I really like the staff and the doctor's here. I had to take my cat in because she all of a sudden had a head tilt, her eyes were moving funny and she was very wobbly. The staff got her right in, Dr. Allrich examined her and explained what she thought was going on. She was put on various medications and sent home. I really did not think my cat would be coming home to me, but she did. She is doing much better! Thank you! I did read some of the other reviews on here. As far as it being messy, it wasn't the day I went. Maybe the day the other writer went there was a hairy dog or some explanation. The building is older and seems worn from years of animals, but I felt it was clean and updated. The staff was very nice, I was really worried about my cat, and the kept me calm and updated on her. The expenses seemed fairly reasonable for everything I needed for my precious Cassie. I will keep coming and recommend them. Read Less

My Arabian show mare had injured her leg quite badly and after going through three different area vets, I finally called the nearest Stable to me and said I need the best leg man in Hendricks County for this mare. They directed me to Dr. Frank Stokes. I have never looked back since. My mare is no longer lame and now shows in the class ""A"" Arabian shows with a wonderful young lady that loves her dearly. Dr. Stokes and his staff are professional and go above and beyond in their care for your pets. The hospital is spotless at all times as they run a very tight ship! You get what you pay for and I have and I will continue to pay again and again for the service and knowledge they have at HCAH! Read Less

I went to the Hendricks County Animal Hospital with my new dog to get her spayed and her first check ups. I had several issues, which I will outline below: - First, they lost my appointment, when I got there they had no record of my appointment, when I am 100% sure I made it. -Cleanliness- In my opinion an animal hospital is a professional office and it should be clean. Just look at the grout joints in the tile in the lobby. If they don't care enough to keep their office clean how do I know they are caring for my animal? -Staff, some of their staff was very rude. When I picked my dog up the receptionist was very rude. When I asked to see the itemized list she acted like I was ridiculous. Also, she did not ever explain with detail how to care for my dog. I had to read through the paperwork. Also, when I asked about changing the chip she was VERY rude about this, and acted as if my spending over $200 was bothering her. -Finally, I never met the vet, in my opinion I think I should have met with the vet to discuss my dog's situation and her well being. I never met a vet, which I thought was odd. It is for these reasons I will now be looking for a new vet. Read Less

Dr. Katy Portwood is the best! She has a wonderful "bedside manner" and I know that she has my dog's best interests at heart. She has never tried to push unnecessary services on me and I appreciate that she is respectful of my financial limitations. Her assistants are knowledgeable and caring. I also like that Dr. Portwood is aware of her own limitations and would give me a referral if a situation arose that she was not comfortable dealing with--in short, she doesn't have the "God complex" that many other vets have. I would recommend Hendricks County Animal Hospital to anyone! Read Less

My experience with this hospital started PRIOR to me getting a German Shepherd. I walked in & talked to the lady at the counter, told her what I was getting and she answered all of my questions. She even gave me a folder with forms, & to keep papers in. I came back a few weeks later & had a long list of questions. She answered all of them. After getting the dog, we had her spayed. Dr. Allrich explained, in detail, showing me pictures in a book, exactly what the proceedure consisted of. She also explained the importance of a blood test prior to the anesthetic. Why Atropine was going to be administered, what pain medication was going to be given to us, etc. A post operation information sheet was given to us when we picked our dog up. The dog went in that morning & we picked her up that afternoon. Dr. Stokes came in to the front office & introduced himself to us. He had a very good attitude. Bottom line..I felt that we received EXCELLENT treatment as did our dog. Over the time, I've met & delt with the staff of techs & am very pleased with all of them & so is our dog. Our dog came from Serbia fully trained for ""personal protection"" & loves to go to the office. The vet tech never has a problem taking her to trim her nails. I will say that the hospital is always clean & does not smell since we take the dog in frequently for her nails to be clipped. No animal hair in the examining room or even in the lobby. We receive a ""reminder call"" when we have a scheduled appointment also. I am truly sorry to hear that some of you did not receive the treatment that I did but I can only say how we were treated. I do not recommend Hendricks County Animal Hospital. The Proprietors, which are also the head veteranarians are more interested in power and money than the care of domestic pets. They have contradicted each other on courses of action to be used on my dog. They seem to believe their knowledge is above and beyond anyone elses. I have received wrong diagnosis for an ongoing ailment as well as spent money that didn't need to be spent. And there front office staff never, I repeat NEVER relays my messages properly. It's been said that they only took on domestic pets, cats, dogs, rabbits, exotics etc, when they learned the revenues it would bring in. Everytime they get a good personable vet in the office, It's not long before that vet moves on to a new location. I am currently still using this office therefore I cannot disclose my ID. I have been taking my dogs to Henadricks County Animal Hospital for years. I had a Rottweiler that became very ill on a Friday evening, and the vet. stayed at the clinic until we could get there and he spent over a hour with us. Before he decided to keep her overnight. He called us 4 times on Sat to let us know how she was doing. Ultimately she had to be put down and they were very kind to my husband and me. A year later we got another Rotti. he blew out his knee and Dr. Stokes took care of him and he did super. We had to have his hip replaced and again Dr. Stokes did the sugery. He told us what therapy we needed to do and our dog did GREAT!! I have used other vets but I have never had my animals treated so well. Read Less

I hate to be negative and give someone a bad review, but I DO NOT recommened this vet. I brought my cat in for an emergency when a sore she had got infected and broke open. The vet acted like he new everything and was VERY degrading to his assistant. I wanted to confront him on it, but felt my cats life was in his hands and I needed help for her asap, so I stayed quite! When it was all done, I felt royally ripped off! They care more about money than helping animals. Read Less

I have been going to Hendricks County Animal Hospital for over 5 years now and I am very pleased with the staff and doctors. I started going to Dr. Stokes when on the weekend my Lab broke his leg. When I called to see if anyone could see us, we only live 10 minutes away, someone was there to greet us when we arrived. My pet was taken care of the rest of the weekend and was in surgery first thing Monday morning and I was able to pick him up that night. Two years ago I got a MinPin and she broke her leg at 3 months old. Again we were taken care of first thing Monday morning. Since then my MinPins, I have 2 now, have been taken care of very well. When my youngest MinPin tore her leg open on a nail, they stitched her up that night . Their needs and mine have both been met. Dr. Stokes taught me how to do physical thearpy on my pets and answered all my questions. As for being a dirty place, that I have never seen. The office and rooms are always clean and never have a odor. And as price is concerned, you pay for what you get. I would rather pay a little more to get the care my pets need than go cheaply and receive less than par care. I would recommend HCAH to anyone with pet care needs, especially emergencies. They are all about the money. If there is nothing wrong with your animal, they will find something wrong just to charge you for it. If you call there after hours for an emergency they want you to leave your credit card number on the voice mail in order to get the vet to call you back! They are all about the money, and another little tidbit, Dr. Allrich and Dr. Stokes are married and in on this money making together. They even tell their staff, if someone doesn't look like they have money doesn't mean that they don't. Nice.....By the way, Dr. Frank C Stokes III NOT a licensed orthopedic surgeon for dogs like he claims he is. Do not let him do orthopedic surgery on your animal. Read Less

I have been taking my pets to this animal hospital for years for their annual checkups, shots, surgeries, etc. It is always very clean and the doctors are very knowledgeable and friendly. As a matter of fact, we just had a stray dog ""adopt"" US the other day and that's exactly where I'm taking him tonight for a checkup. Read Less

my sons dog had an emergency and since it was on a weekend we called hendricks county animal clinic in avon. we left a message and within a few minutes frank stokes 111 called us and had us meet him there. never having been there we were pleasantly surprised by how clean the place was. my son is very particular about his dog and he was pleased with what he saw. frank checked her over very throughly and several times asked if we had any concerns or questions.we had to leave her for a couple of days and after coming home talked to our neighbor who told us we had a very good vet. since she has dogs of her own i really trust her judgement.when we took her back in 2 weeks for a recheck up we again met with frank he was very courteous and caring about our pet. i am very sorry about the person that had a bad experience but ours was what we would reccommend to any loving and caring pet owner. also having had pets all my life i would rate this clinic right up there with the best and the same for frank stokes 111. I had a slight emergency with my dogs foot and we came in and saw ""Dr."" frank C. Strokes lll. he was God awful, I'm still not sure to this day if he even had a degree. He just thought he was God of all vets. I told him my dog had a rare condition called OCD, and he said, I quote, ""Thats impossible she is only two, there is no possible way she has that."" even though we had it already previously checked out and that was confirmed. One other thing, they put a cast on here leg and told us to come back in two weeks, he told us to make sure it didn't get wet to avoid sores, I have no medical/vet experience, and even I know that leaving a cast on an animal like that for two weeks will form sores regardless. Overall the experience was horrible and ""Doctor"" Strokes was horrible. I will never recommend this place to anyone to save my life. One last thought, when you go inside this ""hospital"" As they call it, it is filthy dirty and looks like it hasn't been cleaned since it was established. The second i walked into the building i just wanted to get out of there because it was so disgusting.
