Avian And Exotic Animal Clinic

Indianapolis, Indiana
General Info
The veterinary services at Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic in Indianapolis operate through principles of spatial memory combined with energy balance. The entire visit experience—from initial arrival to final discharge—enhances sensory perception clarity for pets throughout Indiana. The setup of appointment rooms follows a daily repetitive sequence where furniture placement, lighting conditions, and entry points remain unchanged to eliminate redundant decision-making. Personnel execute minimal vocal variations and restricted movement patterns while incorporating transitional pauses to help pets adjust. The management of odors takes precedence as scents become neutralized between visits to prevent sensory accumulation. Pet orientation patterns dictate whether owners can position themselves nearby or farther away. The Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic offers intricate diagnostic services alongside infection management joint health evaluations nutritional adjustments behavioral consultations and recovery tracking. The introduction of each service occurs within a flowing sequence instead of a simple checklist. When the animal turns away or lowers their ears staff members reintroduce familiar signals through repetitive low-impact actions such as air stroking or providing a tactile anchor like a towel or sleeve. The process of reintegrating patients after treatment involves rhythm-based methods. Instruction is given to families on maintaining consistent morning routines post-procedures alongside methods for reducing home stimuli and employing soft ambient sounds to regulate sleep cycles. Instructions extend beyond simple prescriptions by incorporating environmental adjustments that enable pets to resume their daily activities without disorientation. The Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic extends its veterinary services from Indianapolis to nearby Indiana communities by emulating natural animal regulatory patterns through gentle rhythms, predictable spaces, and low-noise decision-making processes.

My sweet sweet kiwi birds' life was taken way too soon. She stopped breathing shortly after surgery due to a broken leg. After doing some research, it's very clear that anesthesia for small birds is very very risky and very easy to give too much, especially when a surgery is rushed. I'm absolutely heartbroken. They DID NOT discuss the severity of the anesthesia, and the severity of the risks. Birds are especially susceptible to the negatives of anesthesia, and this should always be discussed with the client. I'm not happy at all, and wish more than anything i would have never brought my poor little baby in. Any future small bird surgeries should entail the doctor explaining the high risks. I love you kiwi, and miss you so damn much! Fly high in paradise! Read Less

Nice place. Interesting animals. Weird billing. For instance, they told me it would take a few hours for my animal's procedure and I could leave for a bit instead of sitting there. However, they expected me to pay a "deposit" for services of $200 when i left even though they had my animal and personal information for legal action if they were concerned I was a flight risk. (I am a fully licensed, business professional with good credit by the way). Then when I came back, I had to pay another $150. Better practice would have been to bill me up front if they were concerned with integrity of their clients. Also, I had to call back for basic information on my pet that should have been provided at my visit, etc. I rated them above average at 4 stars due to the fact that they would treat my crazy eccentric animal collection, not because I was wowed. Both exotic vets of Indianapolis are great, I love them both because they have such sweet and compassionate people working for them, but I like the fact that Avian has boarding available as there will be a chance I travel out of the country soon for a week or so and don't have people I can trust to take proper care of them. Okay, now I'll get to the experience. I had called Avian about getting my two guinea pigs in as soon as possible because they were experiencing symptoms of a URI and the receptionist was very swift and professional. I was able to get my boys in the same day. When I arrived, the boys were taken to the back to get checked out while I filled out first time patient paperwork. I went back there with them after I was done and I wasn't waiting around too long in the patient room. The vet was very informative and nice and showed me how to give my boys medication. The intern looked bored though-- I was thinking, "how on earth could you possibly be bored when you work around such amazing animals all day? This would be my dream." Anyways... Yes, they're expensive. But they're worth it. My boys are popcorning, wheeking, and being their mischievous, little selves again. I will be back next year for their check-up. Read Less

I called the clinic one day for my ferret, who had developed a lump on his back by his rear left leg. We set the appt up, but he unfortunately passed away before they could see him. I called to cancel the appt, and they told my about the paw prints. What they do is they take paw prints of your animal, put their name on it as well, and give it back to you. They also give you the option of cremation. Their first time seeing Vega he was gone. This was about a month ago. Today, we received a card from them (signed by them all), expressing regret about Vega's death. My parakeet had been injured by my cats, so I had to take him here to be evaluated. His wound, we were told, was too large to heal and needed surgery or else survival chances were low. We asked if there were any other options and they said nothing besides putting him to sleep. It took me a while to decide but I felt it was worth it to try the surgery for him. We tried, and initially it was successful. However, he still had not healed, but we were already in debt paying surgery fees & treatment expenses. On a limb, we decided to let him board for the week because we were going on vacation. After pouring 1,000+ into him already, they tell us he's doing well and then give us a call and tell us the surgery needs to be redone. This was way to expensive for us, which had been clear the time we walked in the door. We decided to tell the lady we have to unfortunately put him down due to cost. After being told on multiple accounts we either had to put him down or do the surgery, when we finally decided to put him down, they informed us that there was a $60 alternate option to donate him to a nonprofit foundation that would cover all of his medical expenses and rehome him. So, of course, we went with this option, only after being misled the whole course just so they could make a profit. This place had a generally good atmosphere, but a lack of customer respect and a lot of misinformation overrides my whole experience. Always ask questions because it could save you a thousand dollars. I ended up paying a fortune for a bird I wasn't even allowed to keep, when I could've paid $60 and ended up the same. Read Less

Guinea Pig Ovarian Cysts - I took my 4 year old guinea pig, Marshmallow, to a regular dog/cat vet who could not diagnose her. From there, thankfully, I was referred to Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic. I took Marshmallow to see Dr. Woods 9/6/12. Marshmallow's entire middle section was swollen and she was losing hair in the same area. She was diagnosed with ovarian cysts. She was scheduled for surgery 9/12/12. Dr. Lennox, Dr. Woods and team successfully removed both cysts which weighed in at nearly half Marshmallow's total body weight. I was so nervous about my tiny Marshmallow having this major surgery, but in just a few minutes following surgery she was up, walking around and eating hay. Amazing! To be safe, both doctors preferred to keep Marshmallow overnight to be sure she did not have any reaction from the surgery. I live about 30 minutes away and did not want to risk the possibility that I might not make it to the clinic in time should an emergency arise overnight. Dr. Woods actually took Marshmallow home with her. Knowing what a nervous mess I was, Dr. Woods sent me texts with status updates and even a couple photos of my sweet Marshmallow. I was so incredibly happy and grateful with the service and kindness of Dr. Woods and team that I took my other four guinea pigs back for a check-up, something I had not done before. Happy to report, five months later, Marshmallow is fabulous as are the other four!! If you have guinea pigs, do not go to a regular dog/cat vet. Select a vet that specializes in small exotic-type animals. I am so very grateful to have found Dr. Woods, Dr. Lennox and team at Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic...they saved my Marshmallow's life!! This place is supposedly the top exotics vet in Indianapolis. I brought a rabbit I rescued in for a simple exam (more than most vets at around $60) for an unknown respiratory issue. The vet spent less than ten minutes with me, whisked him away for observation, and barely let me say goodbye to my pet. This is standard. Most animals who come to this vet are taken for overnight observation. After x-rays and 4 nebulizer treatments over the course of 2 days, the total bill was $265. Despite my asking, the vet refused to see me when I came to pick up my pet. A vet tech responded to my questions about his issue and treatment, diagnosed at pneumonia. They gave me baytril (an overused animal antibiotic) for fourteen days. Someone mis-measured the dose and it barely lasted 9 days. I returned after having done my own research. I wanted to administer the treatments at home. I went to pick up the antibiotics for the nebulizer treatments from the vet they charged me almost $70 for 4 days. Doctor was again unavailable to speak with me. This time, the vet tech told me all kinds of things DIFFERENT about my bunny's condition than either previous vet tech I'd talked to did. Now I was broke, completely confused as to what was actually wrong with my pet, and the doctor refused to speak with me, again, to confirm the issue. They were now asking for $600 for just an endoscopy and ct scan. They never performed cultures to determine which antibiotic would work best. End of story--Dr. Lennox has horrible bedside manners. Everyone at this clinic has an attitude and no one cares about you or your individual pet. Like another poster said, this doctor's concerns are primarily academic, and while this may lead some to think that this makes her a good vet, it does not. The vet techs here are rude and short. Please find a vet who is knowledgeable about rabbits and can also cater to the pet and pet owner populations. They are out there. Dr. Lennox is not the best option. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less
