My long time vet retired in March of 2017. I decided to try Shelby Street Animal Clinic as it had a 4+ star rating online. Here is but a summary of my experiences: 1. Reasonable prices 2. Dr. Wilson seems kind 3. Both Dr. Wilson and Dr. Borst are slow to make referrals to specialists when needed and this may have been a critical error for my dog. I asked for a scan of my dog to look for cancer after she had been sickly for a month or so and neither of them wanted to do it; they misdiagnosed her and when a scan was finally done more than two months after my first request for it, she was found to have advanced cancer. How contained might her cancer have been if caught two months sooner when I first asked for a scan? 4. The front office is chaotic during busy times and makes errors even during slow times. Twice my dog’s medicine was labeled with the wrong dosing information and I had to go back and question Julie the receptionist who admitted her error and fixed the dosing labels. 5. Another error came up with my dog’s pain medicine. I was told to give 0.1ml by mouth (the staff prefilled the syringes). However, some syringes had only 0.05ml in them so I asked why some had only half what I was told to give. They said either 0.05ml or 0.1 ml was within the therapeutic dosing range but they would make sure going forward the syringes all had 0.1 ml in them. The next refill, they gave me syringes filled with 0.125 ml…and no reason for the increase in dose. I would think getting a medication dose correct might be important (especially for pain medication) and also, was I paying for 0.05ml or 0.1 ml when some syringes had only 0.05ml? Why after I complained did they increase the amount in the syringe over the maximum I was told to give without saying a word? 6. When Dr. Wilson is away, the clinic does not hire a “relief” vet to help provide coverage/see clients nor will Dr. Borst come in 5 minutes early or stay 5 minutes late to accommodate a sick pet when he is the only vet working. That is to the detriment of the patient and sends a message that Dr. Borst has lost whatever passion or commitment he may once have had to this profession. He should retire if the best he can do is the bare minimum. 7. Things were “OK” until my dog became chronically ill (later diagnosed with cancer) and needed frequent care. The staff seemed annoyed by our visits; I had to really push to get her seen and when I called on 6/1/18 because she stopped eating, Julie the receptionist told me Dr. Wilson was too busy and was out the entire next week. She said she talked to him and he said just to give my dog pain medicine and anti-nausea pills. When I called again on 6/6/18 because she was still not eating, Julie said Dr. Borst was too busy and I should go elsewhere and I said if that is what you want then you should have just told me to go elsewhere from the start. Julie then back tracked and said that isn’t what she meant and she would work my dog in even though Dr. Borst wouldn’t be happy about it. My dog only saw the vet tech for fluids and a shot for nausea that morning. 8. Later in the day on 6/6/18, I had to take my dog to the emergency clinic and again on 6/9/18 I had to take her to the emergency clinic. The emergency clinic sent records of these two visits to Shelby Street Animal Clinic and nobody has called me to acknowledge these visits. 9. The staff complains and gossips about customers, and talks on personal calls at the front desk rather than paying attention to their jobs. My dog deserved better. I am sure if you are reading this, yours does too. Read Less

I was referred by a friend to Dr. Wilson at Shelby Street Animal Clinic after having a horrible experience with Dr. Phillips at Fountain Square Animal Clinic.  We're so glad we came to Dr. Wilson!  He was amazing with our 2.5 year old pitbull/terrior rescue, Griffey, and said he was physically healthy and had a great demeanor.  (Unlike Dr. Phillips who said his behavior was so troubling that he needed to be put on anti-anxiety medication.)The only reason I gave 4 v. 5 stars is that the receptionist was a little surly, both booking the initial appointment and then the follow-up.  In fact, she called to reschedule because it was 1 min past the appt time and my husband wasn't yet there - he walked in as we were on the phone.  Just needs to up her customer service game!  :) Read Less

I am so impressed by this vet office and Dr. Wilson! He was so caring toward my sick dog and didn't make a fuss toward her shots not being up to date or her teeth decaying (she's an old dog). He was straight to the point and didn't try to get me to pay for extra expenses I cannot afford. His prices are reasonable, and he even called to check on my dog a few days later...not the office staff but himself. It's nice to know he's so caring. The office staff was very nice as well. We have seen several different vets since ours retired 4 years ago and this office is by far the best we have visited. Our dogs love the staff at this animal clinic. Dr Borst has such a friendly manner and was easily able to handle our frightened 130 lb. St Bernard during his exam (this was his first vet visit after adoption). Dr Wilson has a very fun and gentle nature and our tiny 6 lb. princess just loves him. Even our cranky 13 yr old Pekingese Chihuahua seemed comfortable at his annual exam this year. Both vets are knowledgeable, capable and personable. They take the time to explain procedures and medications before prescribing and have been excellent about answering all of our questions. The vet techs and receptionist are awesome, informed, kind, and accommodating. The office has returned every phone call in a timely manner. They were able to make great referrals for both behavior issues and grooming. Every time we have visited, the office and exam rooms have been clean and tidy. Also the clinic is very affordable and prices quoted on the phone have always been accurate at the visit. I really couldn't be happier with the service and care my pets and I have received here. This is one of the best animal clinics you will find in the Indianapolis area. Their prices are very reasonable, but much more important to me is they are caring and compassionate. Dr Borst and crew have helped several of my animals through some bad times and then, when "that" time eventually comes, they compassionately help my animal (and me) through the dying process. Just yesterday I had to say goodbye to my beloved dog Ellie. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it, but the entire team helped me through it from the front desk staff, to the techs, and then of course Dr Borst. They were all extremely caring and very aware of the pain I was going through. It was still a very sad day, but made much easier to take by this place and the team there. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Read Less

I think I have high standards for vets... that and I didn't know better to ask to make sure that the old guys was in so I got stuck with the new guy.Regardless, he listen to my concerns, gave me some options, and helped me and my pooch out.  I'm glad to have a vet in the 'hood and the prices were low, so that's nice too.I'm more used to a high-end holistic type vet, but I'm not really seeing that anywhere around here, so I'll have to manage with this old school, caring, friendly clinic.  I do wish they had chairs in the exam rooms for us parents. Exam was kind of awkward because of the size and set up of the room - I've never seen a vet really try to keep a large dog up there on the table before, but the room is so small there really isn't much choice.I'll be back and will give them some time to build a relationship.Definitely a good spot to go for the basics like vaccinations, etc. Read Less

I couldn't be more pleased with my experiences at Shelby St. Animal Clinic. I first got my cat declawed there 3 years ago, and all of the staff members were incredibly kind and really cared about how well he was recovering. More recently, my boyfriend and I took our dog in to have a minor procedure, and we got several follow-up calls asking how he was doing and whether he was acting normally and moving around well. I can always get someone on the phone quickly to answer my questions, and the prices are very reasonable. One occasion in particular, though, really seals this 5 star review for me. My cat had a minor surgery, and I picked him up at the end of the day, shortly before the clinic closed. Five minutes after I got home, he had ripped open a stitch on his paw and was bleeding a bit. I called the clinic in a panic (right as they were locking the doors), and the vet tech immediately offered to stay open until I could bring him back. She stayed late without charging me extra, just so I wouldn't have to go to an emergency animal clinic. I was wowed by that.Prior to finding this place, I went to an animal clinic in Broad Ripple. It was very nice (not to mention fancier and more modern decor), but they charged twice as much as Shelby St. for a declaw. Needless to say, between the great prices and the amazing service, I won't be shopping around anymore. I recommend Shelby St. to anyone. Read Less

Let me start by saying this is one of the most caring vet centers I have ever been to. We have a 15 pound jack russell that we had given a ham bone to as we have done many times before. However this time she had eaten way to much of the bone and it did not digest properly causing her bowels to back up. Throughout a 2 day period we had called many vets that were listed in the Indianapolis area to try and get advice on what we could do for a remedy. We were told that they not only couldn't tell us over the phone what to do but could tell us that it would cost us anywhere from 300.00 to 1000.00 dollars to have her looked at and or fixed we even had 1 vet that had told us we might as well let her die if we didn't have the money. After a whole lot of phone calls I reached the Shelby street animal clinic and from the 1st phone conversation they were very caring on what we could do and had asked what we had done to help resolve the problem. After going through several things we had set a appointment up on Thurs to either try and help our beloved puppy or maybe even put her to sleep due to the fact that times are hard and we didn't have a whole lot of money to work with but we could not see watching her suffer. We ended up on Wed. coming up with some money and called the clinic back and asked if they could do anything for the amount of money that we had to work with on that day. After conversing with Dr.Magnusson they made the time around 12 pm to see us. We took her in to the clinic at that time and they did wonders with our puppy the entire staff were very pleasant and caring and really seemed to understand and the compassion was overflowing. After working on her they had us leave her with them for about 2 hours. When we came back to pick her up you could see the relief in the puppy's eyes. After 2 days our puppy is back to normal and as mean as ever. The clinic has also stayed in contact with us by calling daily to check on her and see how she is doing. This clinic saved our dogs life if it had not been by a chance calling We would had never known about this clinic. I would recommend this clinic to whoever reads this I have not been touched by as caring of people at this clinic in a long time they really care about not only pets but they also understand what pets mean to people as well. Sincerely The family of puppy sissy Read Less

I visited the Shelby Street Animal Clinic for the first time today. I called Friday and they were able to get me in ASAP. Staff was super friendly, I was in and out in 15 minutes, and their prices were extremely reasonable. I used to take my cat to the Broad Ripple Animal Clinic, so I was expecting a huge bill today... but was surprised by how reasonably priced their services are. Plus, unlike BRAC, this vet did not try to make me feel like a bad parent b/c my cat weighs almost 15 lbs. And they didn't try to pressure me into buying a bunch of unnecessary medications. My only critique would be that they should create their own website and maybe get a facebook page in order to market to more people than just Fountain Square, Garfield Park, etc. Read Less

He was straight to the point and didn't try to get me to pay for extra expenses I cannot afford.

Read Less
