The staff at Western Veterinary Clinic has been the silver lining to an otherwise heartbreaking day. Our 13 year old golden retriever had rapidly declined over the past 48 hours, and we felt that the time to intervene was approaching. Not wanting Peyton to suffer, we initially attempted to get into our own vet, who told us their earliest appointment was in 2 days. Despite a full schedule, WVC offered to squeeze us in between surgical patients, and apologized in advance for an...y wait we might experience due to being an add-on. When we first arrived, the vet technician spent a solid 20 minutes discussing possible outcomes with us, even relaying personal stories of loss and suggestions for approaching the topic with our 3 year old son. Dr Payton was equally attentive, reassuring us that we were making the right decision, without attempting to influence our choice. For being "squeezed in" to a full schedule, he easily spent 30 minutes with us, and encouraged us to take our time in making a decision. When the time came to administer the injection to end Peyton's suffering, the receptionist watched our son so that I could remain in back with my husband while Peyton passed. Everyone in the office really contributed to make the best of a sad situation, and we couldn't have asked for better care for Peyton on his last day. Thank you so much for your kindness. We have been partnered with the wonderful people at Western Vet for over 20 years. All our pets were and are given excellent care The staff and doctors are like aunts and uncles as well as awesome medical care providers. One of my kitties lived to be 22 years old largely in part to their loving care. Another vet took time out after hours to provide me every bit of help, knowledge and love when my cat was diagnosed with advanced kidney damage, and the staff was there to offer emotional comfort after the disease took its toll. The staff is always there to help. I can't think of another place with this level of kindness. Read Less

Words cannot describe my appreciation for the kindness and thoroughness shown by Dr. Betsy Culp and the entire staff at the Western Veterinary Clinic. I am new to the Michiana area, and I was referred to Western by another Vet hospital for an emergency treatment of GI issues on my Angora Rabbit. They squeezed me, even staying well beyond their closing time to make sure my rabbit received the best care they could offer. They explained all the options to me, making sure I knew all risks and prices, so I could make the most educated choices concerning my furry family member. They also made sure I had EVERYTHING I needed to make sure my bunny survived the evening hours and put in place a plan just in case he worse the next day. It was evident that the team there really cares about the pets, and gave top notch service. Though a bit of a drive for me coming from North-Eastern Mishawaka, I will now only take my pets to Dr. Culp at these facilities.Read Less

We were recommended to them by a friend. Made the appointment, told them our previous vet, they told us they would get records faxed over. Day of the appointment, waited 30 minutes for a room, told them our friend recommended them to us and they said that without the card filled out they would not honor the 10% referral discount, then discovered they never got the records so could not update shots. A week later had a family emergency so no choice but to board them. Gave them another chance. Records still had not been acquired. Three dogs, ages 11,2, and 3... Shot updates and 8 days of boarding was $637. I liked the text messages even if they were generic. What I didn't like was this: 1. My dogs panic without each other but could not be boarded together in the same room or even a room they could see each other from. 2. Our dogs came home aggressive. They've never been aggressive. 3. Our dogs came home coughing/backwards sneezing a lot. They don't have allergies. 4. Our 11 year old dog came home with a healing puncture wound under her left eye. 5. Our 2.5 year old husky came home with a severe limp in her front leg. 6. Both our 11 year old dog and the husky lost their voice... They are literally unable to howl. We did not contact this vet to ask about any of this because really, what could they tell us? I would never board here again. Customer service is absolutely awful. It is pricey to say the least. I don't know what happened to my dogs. As a last resort I might take them back for shots only because I would be there for that.Read Less

We had a family emergency that took us out of town for 8 days. We have three dogs that needed shot updates and boarding. Total cost was $637.Our dogs were not allowed to be boarded together - presumably for safety reasons - tho our dogs are incredibly anxious without each other. They were taken for walks together daily. We picked up three happy dogs 8 days later! When we got home we noticed they were coughing - like backwards sneezing almost. They have never done this before. They are 11 years old and 2, 3 year olds without allergies. There's no reason for them to cough like this. My oldest also now has a healing wound under her left eye that was definitely not there when we left. My two year old husky also has a bad limp in her front left leg - wasn't there before. All three have returned aggressive... Also not a behavior present before.I don't know what happened - but our dogs weren't returned the way they arrived.I would probably use them as a vet for shots since I would be present for that - I don't think I would board them here again. My name is Kathy Davis. We found Dr. Payton through a friend of ours when we had all but given up hope. We have a beautiful Boxer named Gracie who suffers from Degenerative Mylopethy (sp?) a disease of the spine for which there is no cure. We had taken her to our own vet when we first saw symptoms and had no idea what was happening. He diagnosed her and said that nothing could be done. I pleaded with him to try something so he sent us to another veterinarian who also informed us there was nothing they could do and usually within 2-3 months of diagnosis, these sweet dogs have to be put down because they lose control of their bowels and urine as well as being unable to walk, of course.  We were absolutely distraught. Then my friend reminded me of Dr. Payton and said PLEASE give him a try, he works miracles. We didn't hold out much hope but made an appt anyway. The minute we walked in, he (along with his wonderful assistant, Kim), gave us hope IMMEDIATELY. They certainly didn't offer a cure but yes, there were things that could be done to help her and to keep her with us as long as possible. I began crying 5 minutes after I was in the office because they were the first ones to say, there is help for Grace. She was offered physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. He is wonderful with her!!! Kim was doing exercises right along with her and is so good to Gracie. Dr Payton, (Chris) is amazing. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing. These are professionals, make no mistake, but they are compassionate, caring, wonderful people who also own animals and care as much as we do. Gracie began going there in January. Most dogs have to be euthanized within a few months of diagnosis.  Gracie is still going strong, although weaker for sure, we aren't kidding ourselves. If it weren't for these two amazing people and this clinic, Grace wouldn't be here. I know that without a doubt. I would never trust ANYONE else with our babies. Read Less

if you don't have anywhere else to go they will do but the couple of times I've been there haven't left a good impression on me or my wife. They always try to jack up your bill by adding procedures, shots, and whatever else they think your animal might need. I went in for a rabie shot with my dog and before I knew it the nurse was tacking on a bunch of tests that I hadn't asked for and that she hadn't even asked me if it was ok to do, they were just going to run them! It wouldn't be so bad if they would ask you if you want it done but they just start writing it up and don't even ask you if you want these tests done to your animal. Plus, the few times I have taken an animal in for an emergency, they want to go straight in and do the expensive tests rather than the cheaper ones to try and save you a buck and still help your pet. What ended up being wrong with our animal, the test for it only cost under fifty dollars, but this was after the doctor tried to convince us to go into debt to pay for the treatment they wanted us to have which was over 500 dollars. So, if you don't have anywhere else to go the Western Veterinary will do but overall they are to pricy and seem to care more about getting your money than trying to take care of your animal in the best way. Heck, the receptionist wasn't even that friendly! Lol, just ridiculous! Read Less

Absolutely happy with the service and care our Sadie received! She got the best care from Dr. Culp last night. Dr. Culp spent so much time with Sadie and answering all of our questions, especially after having her for a few years and going to a different clinic, and now we feel, we finally have answers and believe Sadie is on the right path to a happier tummy!

After not boarding our pets for years due to the stress, we decided to try Western and had a good experience. We received a text both days hearing how Buddy was doing and we were glad he got walks and playtime.  When we picked him up he showed no signs of stress.

Read Less
